Ten Shadows: The (Not so) Official Guidebook

Summary:

The Goal of this "Fic" is to document exactly how Gege Akutami presents the [Ten Shadows] technique in the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga and speculating exactly how it works based on what is and isn't shown. Those chapter endings where Gege Admitted that the math behind the [Limitless] technique made no sense does make this slightly redundant, however even if they don't make sense with the fake math Gege made, he does still stick to the rules he made in the story. I will be gathering every time the [Ten Shadows] is used, talked about and then speculate on the rules Gege follows yet doesn't state.

(I would like to note that this isn't me policing fic writing, a good deal of JJk is about characters interpreting their technique, however as someone who likes complying to lore this technique is by far the most difficult to pin down the rules for outside the basics. If you want your SI-MC to use an open barrier domain and summon 1000 Mahoragas, go ahead, however I'm still making this for general use - and hopefully discussion on whether my opinion is brain dead)

-I will be putting in the hard facts in normal text and putting my speculation and then advanced rambling in (brackets) so you can skip over allat if you don't care.

Notes:

Establishing the Basics of JJK, -its just the fanbook lmao-

Chapter 1: Some General Clutter Before We Begin (AND SEASON 3!!!!!)

Summary:

All of this chapter isn't important to the [Ten Shadows] but focuses more on the lore around the technique and some interesting tidbits I learned about Megumi and other things via the fanbook and combing through the manga. Enjoy this as a fun fact picnic before I start sounding insane talking about fake magic animals.

(Also a bit of Ranting about how cool the progression of the JJK Anime's animation is, if my yapping is contrived or nonsense, know that I'll explain it in the end notes to the best of my ability)

Chapter Text

Bellow is the so called COMPLETE MANUAL TO CURSES that was in the JJk Fanbook, which I believe came out just after the Shibuya incident finished in the Manga as the page about Hakari talks as if he was yet to be introduced.

A lot of interesting stuff tbh, all that could be useful for use in a Fic I think, (To find this look up JJK Fanbook and look around for what works for you, don't commit crime tho, would be uncool of u (you wouldn't download a car, would you?)). But what I wanted to focus on before we got into it is just the Zenin Clan and their position in society.

The zenin

Blood Lines

While all of this is probably obvious, it is still noteworthy imo. All this to say that the Zenin rose to power due to the past and have power now due to the fact that they kick down those that may oppose them and the clan techniques that pass down the family as well as their stock of curse tools. Its because of this that Megumi holds the importance that he does, that being that the [Ten Shadows] technique holds great importance. As I said, obvious, yet its a good primer before we get elbow deep in ts.

I went through the rest of the fanbook as well, I find that there wasn't a lot of things I can talk about here before I reach the speculation portions in the chapters on [Wells Unknown Abyss] and [Totality], however there are some things I found interesting in the rest of the book, I'll go through some of them here, however, as said before, not really necessary for the [Ten Shadows].

frwefgre

This was part of the Q&A section on Megumi and could be quite interesting to use for a fic I think, however we don't know how young he was and how long the visit was, however I would assume he probably wasn't that long after he was first taken in by Gojo due to what Gege was saying here.

[Just so you know, this diagram needs very little editing to fully encompasses JJK's power system, furthermore the only issues I have with it isn't anything on a technical level but on a narrative level. Like them putting [Cursed Womb Death Paintings] alongside [Cursed Objects] like [Sukuna's Fingers]]

Furthermore, I think there should be a line from [CE Manipulation] to [RCT] and that [RCT] shouldn't be in [Cursed Techniques] (If you check some of the Chapter extra's, Gege explains that despite its name, [RCT] isn't a [CT], damn cat). I think there should be a box from [RCT] to a new one that says [Reverse Cursed Energy] and then from THAT box to [CT Reversal].

Also there should be a link from the [CT] group to the [Barrier Techniques] box to show that [Barriers] are a form of [CT]. There should also be a box in [CT] called [Non-Innate Technique's] which are weaker [CT] that anyone can learn (Think the cuts and fire Gojo does against Hanami's [Shikigami] in the anime).

Again, not important, this diagram is super useful and should be used more.

JJK SEASON 3! LETS FUCKING GOOOOO!

Guess what, we got some new visualse from the JJK S3 OP that include some things for the Ten Shadows. I do believe that Gege is involved with the art direction in a major way, so the several uses of Megumi doing Shikigami shit will be good fodder for our lil hamster teeth to nibble through.

Mostly though, we get the symbols of all the treasures that Megumi has tamed (And Raga, bro does not have Raga but blud shows up anyway).

Notes:

My point of the progression of animation is this
s1: comes from the perspective of the bottom or "Earth" living and interacting with itself, otherwise known as normal ppl and sorcerers. So the animation of this season reflects this, with people mostly being on model and not going crazy outside the scenes where Gojo stretches his legs or Sukuna does his thing.

s2: comes from the perspective of the typical or "Earth" bearing witness to the plans of so called "Heaven" or the powerful/curses of the series. We see the defining moment where Toji, the one free from fate by breaking away from Cursed Energy, breaks the prophecy and balance protecting Tengen from Kenjaku's plans and on October 31st of 2018 as a result we see the beginning of his plan. As a result the animation of this season reflects this, with the powerful being animated quickly or not even being seen, being off model to emphasize their speed and 'otherworldly' nature. It is animated in a way to show what the "Heavens" (The truly strong or True Curses/Evil) looks like from the "Earth" (Normal Person/Sorcerers)

s3: Set in the culling game, where Sorcerers, new and old, are set against each other to refine their Cursed Energy and progress to the next level (from "Earth" to "Heaven") by sharpening themselves against each other like was done back in the Heian Era. As a result, as seen in the trailer, we see that Next Level Jujutsu ("Heaven") animated in a way we can understand and see clearly as out characters proceed to that level.

s4: Everything is at that level of strength and we see the fight of the Peak of Jujutsu, It will be legendary.

In other words, as we progress through the quarters of the story, we move from the normal to the peak, first completely weak, then the weak looking up at the strong, then the weak becoming strong and then finally the strong fighting the strong. And the animation reflects this, which I find to be so cool an peak visual story telling.
