Chapter Text
According to an old pact between the Potter and Malfoy families, Draco and Harry were betrothed from the moment they were born. Abraxas Malfoy had made a betrothal promise to Flemont Potter years before Harry and Draco were born. At that time, Lucius had already made a betrothal promise to Narcissa, and the betrothal promise was passed on to their grandchildren. In a world where Voldemort doesn't exist, Harry and Draco were engaged before they were even born... Draco loved Harry from the start... But Harry didn't feel the same way and upon entering Hogwarts, he even hated Draco...
Draco was slightly older than Harry. He had been born on June 5th, while Harry had been born on July 31st. When Harry was born, he was placed in Draco's cradle and the engagement was officially announced. James was not happy about this and did not want his son to be betrothed to a Malfoy, but he respected his father and this was what his father wanted. Lily had also previously said that if Harry grew up and fell in love with someone else, they could talk to the Malfoys and break off the engagement. As a result, James did not object further.
On July 31st, the two children were bound together, or perhaps fate had bound them together long before that... perhaps before trees were created, birds flew, or snakes crawled... perhaps those two opposing souls belonged together before man was created.
As the two children grew up, their differences became apparent. Draco was selfish, cunning, spoiled, a liar, and even a coward! A perfect Slytherin! But Harry was brave (often reckless), kind, honest, unyielding, and selfless. They were completely different, and with all their differences and contradictions, Draco loved Harry in a childish and undeniable way. But Harry didn't feel that way. Oh, he definitely didn't.
Draco admired all of Harry's qualities with all his heart, but the green-eyed boy didn't like his spoiled, self-centered, and Slytherin ways. Slytherins weren't known for being "nice," after all. Harry was too much of a Gryffindor to love Draco Malfoy.
The golden-haired boy grew up loving the bespectacled boy. His first word was Harry, his first steps were to reach Harry, his first writing was "Harry Potter," and he even learned to ride a broomstick to fly with Harry... Draco Lucius Malfoy's life revolved around a man named Harry James Potter. And it was just frustrating and painful. Draco had no idea how deeply his fate was intertwined with the dark-haired boy's... and in a sinister way.
The two weren't as close as Draco had hoped, but 1991 was definitely the beginning of their complete separation. 1991 was the year Draco went from being a contracted fiancé and acquaintance to Harry's hated enemy.
