Volleyball School Hopping

Chapter 1: First day

Summary:

You transfers to karasuno in your 1st year after your original school shuts down from the lack of students (love live anyone?) and because you're a foreigner using your adoptive family's name the school confuses you with your big brother and sends you the male uniform. Too awkward and lazy to fix the mistake like your big sister insisted weeks before your first day of school you wear the boy uniform and make things worse when you get confused for a guy and don't correct anyone.

Notes:

Some context before you read. You moved to Japan when you were 5 after your parents passed away. You were taken in by Mei (you call her mom too) your mother's friend and became apart of her family. Mei has 2 biological children a daughter named S/n (sister's name) and a son named B/n (brother's name). They took on English (or names in a language from wherever you're from) names to comfort you. S/n is 12 years older than you and B/n is 6 years older than you. Your new mom Mei unfortunately passed away when you were 12 and you now live with your big sister and her husband Ken. Your brother is in college and has a connection to volleyball. Your brother's name is meant to kinda match yours whether it starts with the same letter or sounds similar is up to you but the matching is what causes the mix up. And Ken is Japanese along with the siblings. His name is not from barbie. This is also my first story kinda.

Chapter Text

I blinked up at the ceiling irritated already. The sun was shining into my room more than it should be at this time and there was a loud sound ringing in my ear.

Without looking I felt around on the bedside table until I found the source of the ringing and knocked it off the table.

With the ringing gone I pulled my blanket over my face and turned over to go back to sleep which only lasted a good 2 minutes before my sister burst in the room.

"Y/n wake up it's your first day at your new school." My sister spoke from the door of my room.

Onee-chan wasn't one to raise her voice. Infact she wasn't one to show really any emotions, so her stoic voice was a stark difference to the entrance she just made.

"I even opened the blinds earlier to help you wake up."

Ah so that's who wishes to blind me so early in the morning.

I groaned in response and gripped onto my blanket extra tight just as she began trying to pull it off of me.

"Get up. Breakfast is ready and me and Ken want to see you off."

With that she pulled extra hard one last time and won our little game of tug of war. Her prize? My blanket that she left the room with.

"Ugh."

I rolled back over onto my back and stared at the ceiling again wondering if it was too late to play sick.

I leaned over the edge of my bed to look at the time on the alarm clock I knocked off.

It was 6:30 am and I had already been seen so playing sick was not an option anymore. I thrashed around in bed for I little to alleviate my frustration before finally dragging myself out of bed.

I stretched and looked over to the uniform hanging by my closet. It's been haunting me ever since it arrived a week ago.

It was my uniform for Karasuno. It was pretty nice in comparison to my uniform for my old school which was hanging right beside it.

If my new uniform was haunting me than my old was definitely mocking me.

I unfortunately don't have time to keep personifying my clothes since I woke up so late. I grabbed my new uniform and headed to the bathroom quickly sliding past Ken as he was just coming back from his and Onee-chan's shared bedroom with his things to get ready for work.

"Are you kidding me?" I heard him complain as I closed the bathroom door.

My routine was pretty simple so it didn't take long to finish up and start putting on my uniform. I pulled the pants on and posed in the mirror. An attempt to make myself feel better about the hole I dug myself into.

Yep pants. My new school uniform was the boy's uniform due to the school's mistake that I had plenty of time to correct but didn't. So now I will be walking into school in the wrong clothes.

As if being new in the middle of the school year wasn't bad enough.

I finished putting on the rest of the uniform carefully buttoning up the last few buttons of the jacket after hearing ken knock on the door for the 3rd time since I've been in here.

Swinging open the door I walked past him casually as if I didn't just hog the bathroom and headed to the kitchen, ignoring the questioning raise of his eyebrow at the sight of the uniform I was wearing.

He shrugged his shoulders deciding not to comment on it and went in the bathroom to get ready for work.

In the kitchen Onee-chan was finishing up breakfast. She was was dressed in a dark grey pant suit with her long hair slicked back and pulled into a modest bun.

Onee-chan was a lawyer who worked at a firm a few miles away. She had her own car and drove herself and Ken to work while I took the bus to school.

It's not like she hasn't offered to drive me to school I just prefer to ride the bus and not deal with her and Ken trying to talk to me the whole time.

I also have a bike that Ken bought to bribe me into helping him propose to Onee-chan last year.

I walked past her and grabbed the dishes to set the table for breakfast.

"Are you nervous about school?" She asked without looking at me as she fried an egg.

"No."

"Then what about the uniform?" She asked walking over to the table to put the eggs on the plates I had set.

She cooked the eggs with everyone's preferences in mind. Her eggs were an omelette, Ken's were scrambled and mine were sunny side up with a runny yolk.

"What about it?" I asked trying not to reveal much emotion on my voice.

She served some rice in 2 small bowls and 1 medium sized bowl fresh from the rice cooker and then brought over some small sausages to pair with the eggs.

"Are you ok with wearing it? I told you you could wear your old uniform and I'll write a note for you if you aren't comfortable with it."

She completed the meal with bowls of miso soup to pair with everything else serving us equal amounts of everything. Well almost Ken's portions were bigger since he ate more than us.

Done serving us breakfast she sat in front of me at her spot at the small table waiting for a response.

"I'm already wearing it now so it doesn't matter." I huffed in response poking at the sausages on my plate to avoid the eye contact she was trying to make.

Before she could continue pressing me about the matter Ken finally came out of the bathroom to join us.

"This looks amazing."

He tossed the compliment her way before he kissing her on the cheek and sat down.

He turned towards me and ruffled my hair.

"And your new uniform looks amazing too."

But his awkward smile let me know he was trying not to address the elephant in the room.

I rolled my eyes at how obvious he was and swatted his hand away with a half hearted glare.

"Thanks for the meal." We all said and dug in.

At the table we chatted casually about work and school and they once again offered to drive me there for my first day.

I politely declined since I knew they'd be late if they did.

We finished breakfast and got up to put away the dishes and then took turns brushing our teeth before heading towards the door.

I put on the new shoes Onee-chan had gifted me and before I could rush out the door she stopped me.

Please don't let it be for a picture.

"Have a good day at school." She pulled me into a tight hug.

I stiffened in surprise before hugging her back.

I thanked her but my voice was muffled from being pressed to her chest.

She released me and we all went on our way.

I started walking to the bus stop and turned to wave goodbye to her and Ken for what felt like forever since neither of us wanted to stop first.

They were in the car and Onee-chan stopped first and I saw her wack Ken in the head for still waving.

With that the waving battle was over and we continued our separate ways to school and work

The commute to school wasn't bad it was an easy walk to the bus stop. Ken made sure to remind me that I could also ride my bike if I wanted a change of scenery.

I decided to take the bus for my first day but tomorrow I might ride the bike so that it doesn't start collecting dust.

Boarding the bus with some other students and random people going to work I found a seat by a window and sat down with my bag in my lap.

Some man who looked like he didn't get any sleep sat beside me and fell asleep in his seat after a minute. He started snoring so I put on my headphones to listen to some music in hopes that it would help ease my nerves and drown him out.

I could no longer hear his snoring but the music did nothing to help ease my mind. My playlist decided to shuffle through all my saddest songs which had me feeling even worse about everything.

The bus jerked slightly as it pulled to a stop, the brakes squeaking loudly.

Luckily we made it to my stop before I could get pulled in by another song. Me and a few other people were getting off. I looked back at the man who was still sleeping and hoped he didn't miss his stop as I got off bus.

My nerves were getting worse as the school came into view during my walk from the bus stop.

The closer I got to school the more students I saw. Some in groups chattering amongst themselves and some alone keeping to themselves like me.

In front of me were a group of girls who mentioned something about the volleyball team winning something but I didn't pay any mind to it because my attention was stuck on their uniforms.

It was so cute. Cuter then whatever I was wearing. It even had an optional sweater vest. My old school uniform was an outdated sailor style uniform with a long skirt. This was a total upgrade.

A total upgrade that was missing out on since I didn't contact the school a week ago to fix their mistake.

I sped up my walking to pass them so that I wouldn't get caught staring like some weirdo. Definitely not because I'm jealous of their uniforms. I do still have to get to school so I can have time to get my new schedule and find my classes.

Caught up in my fast pace I ended up bumping into someone at the entrance. I stumbled and looked to see who it was.

I was a little starstruck seeing her for the first time.

It was a beautiful girl wearing glasses. The stack of papers she was carrying had fell and scattered when we collided.

"I'm so sorry", the words tumbled out of my mouth quickly as I squat down and started gathering some of the papers.

Pausing to look at one I saw the word "Volleyball". It seemed to be a a bunch of flyers for the club.

"It's ok." Her voice was soft and kind. A perfect match for her beautiful looks.

I turned towards the source of the voice to see her crouched down beside me collecting the rest of the flyers.

Of course her side profile was beautiful too.

A few pieces of her shoulder length hair fell forward as she leaned down and she tucked it behind her ear. The gesture caused me notice the beauty mark near her bottom lip.

Done collecting the papers we both stood up and I handed her the few I managed to grab.

Before I could try to apologize again two questionable looking guys started rushing towards us.

"Kiyoko, is that guy bothering you!?" One with a buzz cut shouted as they rapidly approached us.

Guy? Is he talking about me?

Following Mr. buzz cut closely was a shorter guy with a blonde piece of hair at the front of his spiked up do.

The glare that they had set on me was telling me I should get the hell out of here.

You certainly don't have to tell me twice I quickly turned towards the entrance but before I could go in the girl they called Kiyoko gave me a flyer and told me where the front office was.

I took the flyer and rushed in the building heading straight to the front office.

Weird. How'd she know I needed to go there?

I shrugged off the thought and was happy to not have to work up the courage to ask someone for directions.

Behind me the two guys made it to her and started questioning her.

"Who was that guy?"

"Did he ask for your number?"

Kiyoko did her best to calm them down and scolded them in the process. Which didn't do much since they seemed happy about it.

I felt bad about leaving her with those guys but she seemed to know them. So I continued on towards the office or at least I tried to. I got her directions mixed up and end up lost.

After mustering up the courage to ask for help I finally made to the front office.

The lady at the front desk looked me up and down before asking what I needed.

I explained to her that I was new and needed my schedule but before I could try to mention the uniform situation to her she interrupted me.

"Ah, you must be B/N."

"Actually I-" I tried to correct her but she seemed like she could care less and continued her basically scripted greeting.

"Welcome to Karasuno. Here's your schedule and a school map."

She handed me the papers and gave me a tight smile.

I could definitely tell when someone didn't want to do their job.

I sighed in defeated while taking the papers and left to go find my homeroom.

By now the halls were empty except for a few kids who were clearly skipping class. They looked at me and whispered. I wonder why?

Was it the uniform or was it being a foreigner? Maybe both?

Either way I tried to ignore them as I looked for my homeroom down the long hallway I was in. After walking for a while I stopped in front of the door to the classroom.

Standing in front of the door I could feel my heart starting to race as I slowly reached out to open the door. My hand hovered over the handle as I tried to find the right timing to open it.

The sound of my heart in my ears got louder and just before I was about to bail and try to skip like those other kids the door was sliding opened abruptly.

On the other side of the door stood the teacher. She lowered the glasses she was wearing slightly to look at me. Before smiling and guiding me into the room.

Inside the classroom the talking I heard amongst the students from outside the door simmered down as I was led to the front of the class.

My eyes instantly looked towards the floor not wanting to see all the eyes on me.

"Alright class this our new student B/N. Now he may be a foreigner but he can speak Japanese just fine so no need to hesitate when making friends with him."

The students whispered and some of the bolder ones asked questions.

"Where's he from?"

"Why is he transferring in the middle of the school year?"

The teacher was introducing me to the class. At least that's what it sounded like to all the students. To me it sounded like she was introducing my brother. Which was weird unless-

Oh no.

Does everyone actually think I'm a guy? Do I look that chopped in this uniform?

While I was silently going through an existential crisis I realize she stopped talking and was waiting for me to speak.

I can't believe it. She really expected me to introduce myself even though she took everything I could say.

I felt my hands getting clammy so I tightened my grip on my bookbag straps to try to ground myself.

Ignoring the questions from the students I quietly introduced myself basically repeating what the teacher said only I was trying not to stumble on my words.

After my awkward introduction the teacher told me where to sit before going on with the class.

I ignored the stares and whispers as I headed to my seat almost tripping over someone's bag as I did.

I played it of and kept walking until I finally made it to my desk.

It was at the back of the class near a window that overlooked all the sports fields outside of the school.

Turning my head to stare out the window I zoned out as the teacher started rambled on about something.

I hope the rest of the day goes well.

Notes:

I'm gonna try out using onee-chan and onii-chan just to avoid having to repeat the siblings names and to avoid saying big brother/sister everytime I know some might not like it. Also this story is also very self indulgent. Also I can't remember if they really use senpai much in haikyuu because i was gonna try that too even though I know some people don't like when you mix in Japanese words for an english fic but I'll have to see. I will also go deeper into backstory for the whole family situation later in the story and try to branch out and show your relationships with your sister, your brother, and with Ken. Anyway that's the first chapter I don't know if it's long enough but I tried. Shout out to people who write fics this shit is hard and I admire everyone that does it. I'm itching for the reader to meet everyone and get everything started but you have to go to school first. Feel free to tell me what you think and to leave feedback and sorry for the long notes
