Chapter Text
When Tomioka Giyuu joined the Demon Slayer Corps at the age of sixteen, he was nothing more than an ordinary Mizunoto. Yet within two years, he had shown incredible growth and progress, and on the day he turned eighteen, he attained the rank of Kinoe. He was among the small group of slayers who held the highest rank below the Hashira. His use of the Water Breathing technique also set him apart, since there were very few who used it in the Corps, and all of them were still in training. Except for Giyuu…
Through his strict training regimen, day and night without pause, Giyuu had pushed himself as far as he could go. He never dreamed of becoming a Hashira—it was something that only happened at the will of Oyakata-sama. At the time, there were already eight Hashira, and Giyuu was fairly certain they didn’t like him.
He didn’t understand why. Why didn’t they like him? All he did was go on his missions and make Oyakata-sama proud. Just like everyone else.
The Love Hashira and Stone Hashira were kind toward him. The Flame Hashira at least greeted him. The Insect Hashira, however, never missed a chance to throw stinging words at him whenever he went for treatment. The Wind, Serpent, and Sound Hashira were the worst. Sanemi Shinazugawa and Obanai Iguro outright hated him, yes. Uzui Tengen, meanwhile, seemed to find amusement in it. Damn it, he was only eighteen—so why didn’t they treat the Mist Hashira, the youngest of them all, the same way?
It wasn’t fair at all.
After finishing yet another mission and sending his report via crow, Giyuu returned to the house where slayers of his rank stayed. Thankfully, he had his own room there, so as soon as he closed the door, he changed into his yukata. The moment he slipped under his futon, the secret he kept hidden from nearly everyone revealed itself: cat ears and a tail appeared. Stretching like a true cat, he closed his eyes. Only Kagaya-sama, Amane-san, and Kochou Kanae knew of this secret.
After barely surviving a battle with Upper Moon Two, Kanae had retired from her position as a Hashira. Now she worked as the head doctor of the Butterfly Mansion. Giyuu liked Kanae—she had always been kind and patient with him. If only her sister and the other Hashira could have been the same… but that was a distant dream. So Giyuu stopped thinking about it and let himself drift into sleep.
---
The next morning, Giyuu woke to the sound of his crow. Kagaya-sama was summoning him to the estate. This didn’t surprise him—sometimes he was invited there for tea. Giyuu enjoyed those moments. In fact, since Amane-san liked to play with his cat ears, he would often go in his true form.
He stroked the crow’s head as he stood and stretched. Quickly dressing in his uniform and taking up his sword, he left his room silently. A bowl of rice would do for breakfast before he set off.
There didn’t seem to be anyone around, but Giyuu hurried anyway. After finishing his rice, he decided to leave his hair down this time and set out. Kagaya-sama’s house was a three-hour walk, or two if he ran. Since he still had time, he chose to walk.
The mission he had completed the day before had gone well—he had slain the demon quickly and saved the village, which gave him a deep sense of relief.
Lost in his thoughts, he walked the long road until he finally arrived. Taking a deep breath, he knocked on the door, which was answered by the family’s third child, Kiriya.
“Welcome, Tomioka-san. My parents are waiting for you.”
Giyuu bowed respectfully and followed the boy down the corridor until they reached the large room. Entering alone, he walked up to the couple, bowed deeply, set his sword aside, and sat before them.
“Kagaya-sama, Amane-san, I hope you are both well.”
His voice was warm and genuine. Another reason he cherished them so much was because they had first met during his training days before the Final Selection. His sensei had been friends with them, and over time, Giyuu had grown used to their presence.
“We are well, child. And it brings us joy to see you well, too.”
Kagaya-sama’s gentle voice filled him with happiness, and his gaze drifted to Amane-san, who was gesturing for him to come closer. Blushing, he blinked several times before moving toward her.
“There’s no need to be shy, Giyuu.”
Hearing Kagaya’s voice once more, he took a deep breath, rested his head against Amane’s lap, and closed his eyes as her hands stroked his hair. His cat ears appeared, and he melted into her touch.
“We are proud of you, Giyuu.”
Her soft voice made him smile. It meant everything that they thought this way about him. He loved them both deeply. Minutes passed in comfortable silence as Amane continued stroking his hair and ears, while Kagaya held his hand. He was so relaxed, he could have fallen asleep right there.
“This last mission was your fiftieth, Giyuu. And you even defeated one of the Lower Moons.”
As he slowly opened his eyes, a purr-like sound escaped his lips. It was true—he had defeated a Lower Rank demon. But right now, he was far too tired to dwell on it.
“In just two years, you have achieved incredible success. You have truly mastered Water Breathing. Tomioka Giyuu, I want you to become the Water Hashira.”
Giyuu sat up instantly, his blue eyes wide. Had he heard correctly? Did Kagaya-sama truly want him to become a Hashira? Of course, he couldn’t refuse. Being considered for such a position was an honor beyond words. But he felt tense.
“I…”
He didn’t know what to say. Even as a Kinoe, the other Hashira despised him. What would happen if he joined their ranks? Still, he was sure he had never done anything to offend them. He had always been respectful. And he could never bring himself to do something that would disappoint Kagaya-sama.
“It would be an honor, Oyakata-sama.”
Seeing the smile on Kagaya’s face was enough for him. The man was proud of him, and Giyuu was ready to do whatever it took to keep that pride alive.
“We have prepared a haori for you. I hope you’ll like it.”
Taking the bundle of fabric Amane offered him, Giyuu drew in a shaky breath as he unfolded it. The haori was as blue as the clearest waters, with waves stitched in pale blue and white across its surface. It looked beautiful and soft. Slipping it over his shoulders, he found it fit him perfectly.
“Thank you… I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me.”
Bowing low, tears slipped from his eyes to the floor, but he didn’t care. All he knew in that moment was that he was valued and loved.
“I am certain you will be a great Hashira, Giyuu.”

When the time for the Hashira meeting arrived, each pillar had taken their place. While waiting for Oyakata-sama to arrive, none of them even considered talking among themselves.
“It hasn’t even been a month yet. Could something bad have happened?”
Mitsuri’s voice came out worriedly. In fact, they were all thinking the same. Normally, the meetings were held once a month, but only two weeks had passed since the last one. There was definitely something wrong.
“Even if there is, we’ll handle it. Whichever demon tries to trouble us, we’ll kill it.”
Sanemi’s voice was sharp and stern, but he had a point. After all, they had been assigned to exterminate demons, and that’s exactly what they would do. Just then, as the sound of footsteps reached them, they all turned forward, and upon seeing the man they deeply respected and loved, they bowed their heads.
“Oyakata-sama!”
They spoke in unison and stood respectfully. Then, when they lifted their heads, they saw the man smiling.
“It is so good to see you, my children. You must have been worried and anxious that I called you so early.”
That was exactly how they felt. Luckily, Himejima seemed to have taken the initiative to speak on their behalf.
“Yes, Oyakata-sama. We hope that nothing has troubled you.”
The anxiety within them all completely faded with Oyakata-sama’s smile. His smile had always been gentle, and just as warm.
“Do not worry. I gathered you here to deliver good news. Giyuu, come here please.”
Giyuu? Tomioka Giyuu? All the Hashira turned their gaze toward the young man who stepped out from the side, wearing a blue haori. When he came to stand beside Oyakata-sama, he bowed respectfully.
“Tomioka Giyuu, since becoming a Kinoe only seven months ago, has completed fifty missions. Just a few days ago, on his fiftieth mission, he slew one of the Lower Moons. Thus, he has proven his abilities to become the Water Hashira. He is now one of you.”
The announcement fell like a bombshell. Had it really only taken Tomioka two years to join the corps and become a Hashira? Even their youngest, Muichirou, had needed three years to reach that position. As they all looked at one another, the first to react were, of course, Mitsuri and Rengoku.
“Congratulations, Tomioka-kun! Let’s have tea at my estate as soon as possible!”
Of course, Mitsuri’s words had already been enough to put Obanai on the verge of a jealousy fit.
“It will be good to have you among us, Tomioka. Best of luck.”
After that, Himejima offered his congratulations. Muichirou, not fully aware of what was happening, continued staring at the clouds, while Shinobu gave a fake smile as she congratulated him. Uzui, true to himself, said he was flashy. Sanemi and Obanai, meanwhile, were busy scowling.
“Then you may disperse. Until the next meeting, take care of yourselves.”
After offering their well-wishes to Oyakata-sama, they watched him leave. When Sanemi stood up, he noticed the boy standing there absentmindedly, staring at the ground. He walked over and stopped right in front of him.
“Hey, don’t go thinking you’re something just because you’ve become a Hashira, Tomioka.”
The sharp words made the boy lift his head, and Sanemi found himself staring into those unique blue eyes. Still, he kept his demeanor.
“I have no such intention, Shinazugawa-san.”
The fact that he always spoke with those cursed honorifics was infuriating. If only he didn’t, Sanemi would have had more reason to pick a fight with him—or even beat him up—but unfortunately, he didn’t.
“Good. Better keep it that way.”
No emotion flickered in Tomioka’s eyes. He simply stood there, looking at Sanemi. In the end, he took a step back and settled for nodding his head.
“I understand, I’ll be careful.”
Then he turned and walked away without another word. Sanemi could only watch his back as he left. He couldn’t understand why Tomioka angered him so much. Was it his monotonous voice? Or was it the emptiness in those blue eyes? Sanemi just couldn’t tell.
—
At the same time, when Giyuu arrived at the Water Estate, he took a deep breath. He had already brought all his belongings here. Now he simply went to the room he would be using, stripped off his clothes, and curled up on the futon, hugging himself. He was a Hashira now. He had the highest rank. Kagaya-sama was proud of him, and he could not let him down.
“I must do my best.”
Even if most of the Hashira didn’t like him, he had to. He had far more responsibility now, and he had to overcome it somehow. Whether the man he liked treated him harshly or not couldn’t be an excuse.

Chapter Text
Weeks had passed since Giyuu had become a Hashira. Shinazugawa and Iguro never stopped picking on him, but Giyuu still didn’t say much. In the past days, he had tea with Mitsuri, meditated with Gyomei at his estate, made paper planes with Muichirou, and shared a meal with Rengoku. Slowly, he was starting to get along with at least four of the Hashira. Honestly, even Kagaya-sama was pleased about this—when Giyuu told him, he had smiled and told him to keep going that way. That made Giyuu feel happy. Talking to people wasn’t so bad after all. If only two particular people would do the same… but they really didn’t like him.
That day, at the Water Estate, Giyuu’s hand moved up to the ears hidden in his hair. The sight embarrassed him—his fluffy tail and animal-like ears. Amane-san always told him he looked cute, and maybe she was right, but he was still ashamed. If the other Hashira ever found out, they would definitely mock him. Especially Shinazugawa and Iguro. No thanks.
Just then, a small body swooped through the window. Kanzaburou landed in front of him.
“Mission time, mission time! Demon attack to the east! To the east, to the east!”
Taking a deep breath, Giyuu picked up Kanzaburou, stroked his feathers, then grabbed some sunflower seeds from the small box beside his bed.
“I’ll head out right away, Kanzaburou. Please rest for a bit.”
He dropped the seeds on the floor, let the crow eat, then stood up to get ready. It probably wasn’t a high-rank demon, but even the smallest could slaughter many humans. When he strapped his katana at his waist and stepped out of the estate, the sun was nearly set. That meant the demon had been attacking for days. Giyuu sighed. He wasn’t going to let it go on any longer.
---
That evening, the Hashira had decided to dine together. Tomioka wasn’t there—he had returned from a mission the day before and hadn’t joined them. For Sanemi and Obanai, that was fine. They were perfectly happy without him. But Mitsuri and Rengoku didn’t stop talking about the Water Pillar.
“I don’t get what anyone sees in Tomioka,” Sanemi growled while walking ahead. Sure, he had risen quickly to Hashira rank—but so what? He was younger than them, had those deep blue eyes and nice hair… Wait, why was Sanemi even thinking about that? Tomioka was a bastard. End of story.
“I don’t get it either,” Obanai muttered. “He’s only here because no one else can use Water Breathing properly anymore.”
Sanemi reached out and squeezed Obanai’s hand. Everyone already knew the two of them were together. He sighed when he heard Mitsuri’s cheerful chatter from behind—every time they held hands, she reacted like that.
“His stare pisses me off,” Sanemi finally muttered. Tomioka always kept a certain distance with his eyes, like he was ready to recoil at any moment. Ridiculous. If he was a Hashira, he should trust his comrades.
“Unfortunately, we’ll have to get used to him. Oyakata-sama seems to like him,” Obanai replied. And he was right. Everyone knew Tomioka visited Oyakata-sama often. Sanemi hated to admit it, but he was jealous. They had been here longer! Of course they knew Oyakata-sama loved them all dearly, but still—it was Tomioka’s fault.
“Damn Tomioka,” Sanemi spat.
Just then, a blast sounded from ahead. Uzui stopped abruptly, making Sanemi frown. Of course, he had the sharpest hearing.
“There’s a demon! Someone’s fighting it.”
That was all it took. Together, led by Uzui, they dashed toward the source. As they got closer, they heard the sickening voice of the demon, the slash of a katana, and the sound of water. When they reached the clearing, the one fighting was none other than Tomioka. Rengoku stepped forward to help, but Gyomei held him back.
“Wait. This is Tomioka’s fight. Until he truly needs us, let him handle it. Remember, he’s a Hashira.”
Sanemi didn’t want to admit it, but he was right. So, weapons ready, they watched. The demon wasn’t an Upper or Lower Moon, but its Blood Demon Art was strong—manipulating the roots of trees and plants, striking from every direction.
“This is dragging on, Water Hashira!” the demon sneered. It smirked at Tomioka, who stood firm with his katana. “Prepare yourself! If I win, my master will make me even stronger!”
But Tomioka’s face didn’t change. He didn’t speak a word. That only enraged the demon more. Its power flared—the roots turned crimson with blood, twisting violently, surging at Tomioka from all directions. Still, the Water Hashira didn’t move.
“What the hell is he doing?” Obanai hissed.
“He’s going to get himself killed!” Sanemi snapped, drawing his blade. Obanai mirrored him. They were about to leap in when Tomioka’s calm voice cut through the chaos:
“Water Breathing, Eleventh Form: Dead Calm.”
Eleventh form? Water Breathing only had ten—that much everyone knew. None had ever heard of a hidden form.
At his words, every root charging toward him shattered instantly, erased in a blink. A heartbeat later, Tomioka was beside the demon, slicing its head clean off. No one had even seen him move.
“H-how did you do that?!” the demon wailed, its head rolling, body crumbling. “You’re only eighteen! A new Hashira couldn’t beat me! I devoured countless humans! So many demon slayers! I was strong!”
Pathetic, empty words. Don’t all demons say the same at the end?
“Shut up.”
Tomioka’s voice was sharp and cold. Sanemi felt his breath hitch, Obanai too. Tomioka’s hair tie had snapped—his dark hair fell loosely around his face and shoulders. His blue eyes were expressionless, but they said so much. His face was pale, far paler than before he had used that technique.
“Whether you chose it or not, you became a demon. You killed innocents, stole countless lives. You deserve to burn in hell.”
When the demon’s head disintegrated fully, Tomioka sheathed his blade—only to sway unsteadily. He caught himself on a tree.
“Tomioka! Are you alright, my friend?!” Rengoku shouted.
They all rushed to him. Tomioka lifted his head, startled to see them. He must not have noticed their arrival.
“What are you doing here?” he asked blankly. Sanemi just stared. Damn it—he looked… beautiful like this. His loose hair, his eyes… No, Sanemi shouldn’t be thinking that. He glanced at Obanai—who was also staring at Tomioka intently.
“We heard the commotion. By the way, that technique was flashy! I’ve never seen anything like it in Water Breathing!” Uzui exclaimed, joined by Mitsuri and Rengoku’s eager nods.
“You fought bravely, Tomioka. Well done,” Gyomei added.
“…Where are we?” Muichirou murmured absently, earning no surprise.
“T-thank you…” Tomioka stammered, his voice hoarse. Sanemi frowned. What was wrong? The demon hadn’t been that strong, and Tomioka didn’t look injured. Then why did he seem on the verge of collapsing?
“Tomioka-kun, are you alright?” Shinobu asked gently. He nodded—but couldn’t answer. Within seconds, his eyes shut. Mitsuri screamed as Rengoku caught him before he hit the ground.
“Let’s take him to the Butterfly Estate. My sister will know what’s wrong,” Shinobu said quickly.
Sanemi, despite himself, felt worry knotting in his chest. He stepped forward, scooped Tomioka into his arms before anyone else could. At their startled looks, he growled,
“What? Rengoku’s slower. Besides, if something happens to Tomioka, Oyakata-sama won’t be pleased.”
That was explanation enough. Out of the corner of his eye, Sanemi saw Obanai—still staring at the unconscious Water Hashira, clearly thinking the same thing Sanemi was.
Well, this was going to get complicated.
Chapter Text
When they brought Giyuu to the Butterfly Estate, they had handed him over to Kanae. While carrying the young man, Sanemi had noticed just how frail he was—and he smelled really nice too… When Kanae went into the room to examine the boy, Sanemi and Obanai had withdrawn to a corner.
“Why did you carry Tomioka?”
At Obanai’s question, Sanemi took a deep breath. He knew this would come up, and he would answer honestly.
“I don’t know… my body just moved on its own. It felt like that was what I was supposed to do.”
That was truly how he had felt. For some reason, he hadn’t wanted Rengoku or anyone else to carry Tomioka.
“You did well… if you hadn’t, I would have.”
Though shorter, Obanai was actually quite strong—Sanemi knew this perfectly well. As his violet eyes wandered over his boyfriend’s face, seeing that Obanai didn’t mind eased his heart.
“He looked too striking…”
He pressed his lips together after blurting it out. His loose hair, that beautiful face, the way it fell into his eyes… and the way he held his sword was stunning. Sanemi didn’t understand why he thought this way. He was with Obanai, after all.
“He did. Tomioka has a strange way of catching our attention, Sanemi.”
Hearing his boyfriend think the same eased him somewhat. At least he didn’t have to see himself as some cheating bastard.
“So what are we going to do about this?”
It was definitely something that needed to be addressed, but for now, they decided to talk in a more private setting.
“We’ll talk when we get home.”
Just then, Kanae stepped back out. All the Hashira turned their attention to her.
“Giyuu just needs rest. After going on several missions back-to-back and because of the technique he uses, this is normal. I gave him a nourishing serum, he’ll wake up in a few hours.”
Kanae smiled and left. Once the Hashira were left alone, Mitsuri stepped forward cheerfully.
“I’ll cook something for Tomioka-san! Rengoku-san, will you help me? Let’s do something until Tomioka-san wakes up.”
The Love Pillar’s enthusiastic suggestion made Rengoku nod immediately, and the two set off, Muichirou naturally following. Himejima said he would pray and left, Shinobu went to help her sister, and Uzui returned home to see his wives. That left Sanemi and Obanai alone, so they slipped into the room where Tomioka was resting.
Tomioka lay motionless, his hair still loose, spilling over his shoulders and the bed. His complexion was no longer pale like earlier—he looked steadier now. He wore the simple robe patients usually wore, which made him look even smaller. His long lashes veiled his blue eyes, and his pale pink lips were slightly parted.
Obanai reached out, brushing the strands from Giyuu’s face, and drew in a soft breath.
“His hair is so soft.”
Sanemi already knew that—he had felt just how soft it was while carrying him. He wanted to touch it again and again.
“He looks younger this way.”
And how beautiful he would look in Sanemi’s lap… The mere thought of Tomioka lying between him and Obanai left him breathless. Didn’t they hate him? Was it normal to feel like this?
“Sanemi, I think we’ve been very wrong about Tomioka.”
Yes, Sanemi feared that too. They had treated the boy terribly. What were they supposed to do now?
“We need to figure this out.”
Because it wasn’t just him—Obanai felt it too. They loved each other, yet here they were, both drawn to the same person. How likely was that? And yet, it was happening. They exchanged looks and nodded, starting to discuss what they should do.
Nearly two hours passed before movement from the bed silenced them. Tomioka had woken earlier than expected. They watched as he pushed himself up slowly with his hands and stretched. His slightly messy hair framed his sleepy face, making him look adorable. His blue eyes wandered around until they landed on them, tilting his head in surprise.
“Shinazugawa, Iguro—what are you doing here?”
Then he looked at his arm, spotted the serum, and sighed. He seemed to have figured it out himself.
“You collapsed. I carried you here, and Kanae checked you.”
Sanemi spoke plainly, and Tomioka’s expression turned even more surprised.
“You carried me? I’m sorry for causing trouble, Shinazugawa. I must have been a burden.”
Sanemi drew a deep breath. Tomioka’s gaze was so apologetic—and were his cheeks slightly flushed, or was that just his imagination?
“It wasn’t a problem. We got you here as quickly as we could. You look better now.”
It was Obanai who spoke, his eyes fixed intently on Tomioka. The Water user nodded slowly, running a hand over the blanket, murmuring softly in agreement.
“I’m fine. Thank you for waiting here and for bringing me.”
He even bowed respectfully. Sanemi couldn’t understand it. Despite the way they had treated him, he still showed them such respect. At that moment, Sanemi exchanged glances with his boyfriend. Just then, Kaburamaru stirred, slithering up onto the bed. The three Hashira watched carefully as the white snake climbed onto Tomioka’s hand, then around his neck, coiling and nuzzling against his cheek.
“Wow, he’s really cute.”
The warmth and affection in Tomioka’s voice were unmistakable. The shock on Obanai’s face was priceless. Sanemi’s lips curled upward.
“Looks like Kaburamaru betrayed you.”
Amused by his boyfriend’s glare, Sanemi focused on Tomioka instead—watching him stroke the snake, his gentle smile, his long dark hair slipping through his fingers. He wanted to grab him, kiss him hard, and more. And he knew—Obanai was thinking the exact same thing.
Chapter Text
It had been a few days since Tomioka was discharged from the Butterfly Mansion, but no one had seen him. Mitsuri and Rengoku had knocked on his door, but according to them, no one had answered. Besides, the Water Estate was eerily quiet. It felt like no one was around, which only confirmed that Tomioka lived alone.
Sanemi and Iguro were actually worried—where was he? Where could he have gone? Other than his estate, where else could he possibly be?
About an hour before sunset, Sanemi started walking toward the Wind Estate with Iguro. On the way, they considered stopping by Kagaya-sama’s place to ask about Tomioka’s situation. It might turn out to be an awkward moment, but the two of them were curious, all right?
“Did he go on a mission?”
At Iguro’s question, Sanemi shook his head. As far as he knew, Kanae had forbidden Tomioka from going on any missions for a week and had already informed Kagaya-sama. It was impossible that he had gone.
“No, he shouldn’t have gone on a mission.”
Still, the uncertainty gnawed at both of them. And oddly, Kaburamaru had been hissing constantly for the past few days. His eyes always seemed to be searching for Tomioka. Yet the white snake usually liked no one other than Iguro and Sanemi.
Just then, they noticed someone coming from the path that led to the Ubuyashiki estate. When Sanemi looked carefully, he realized it was Tomioka. A deep breath of relief escaped him. Something inside him said Tomioka must have been with Kagaya-sama these past few days.
“Tomioka!”
When he called out, the young man lifted his head, and his blue eyes fixed on the two of them. When they met in the middle of the road, they noticed he looked healthier.
“No one’s heard from you in days. Mitsuri and Rengoku even went to your estate.”
Iguro cut straight to the point, and surprise flickered across Tomioka’s face, as though he hadn’t expected that. Sanemi thought his surprise looked oddly endearing.
“I didn’t know. I’ve been spending time with Kagaya-sama. After everything that happened, he was worried.”
The three of them started walking again, since the Water Estate was just a little further down the same road as the Wind Estate. As they went, just like a few days earlier, Kaburamaru stretched toward Tomioka and coiled around his arm. Tomioka’s lips curved upward ever so slightly at the sight.
“He usually doesn’t go to anyone but me or Sanemi.”
Despite Iguro’s astonished voice, the snake began rubbing against Tomioka’s cheek. Tomioka gently stroked the snake’s head with a finger.
“Is this normal?”
Turning curiously to the two men, Tomioka only got a shrug in response. It felt like betrayal, but Iguro wasn’t really that bothered. After all, Kaburamaru almost never took a liking to any human.
“What was that technique you used on that demon?”
Finally voicing what had been on his mind, Sanemi looked closely at Tomioka. The blue eyes left the white snake and slowly turned toward him.
“A form I developed myself. It lets me absorb attacks.”
His voice was calm, but Sanemi felt there was more to it. Why had he looked so exhausted, then?
“You looked like you were about to die.”
Iguro voiced what they were both thinking. And he was right—Tomioka had nearly collapsed that day. For a few seconds, the blue-eyed young man just looked at them silently, as though trying to figure something out.
“Why did you suddenly start talking to me? You were by my side when I woke up that day too. For people who supposedly hate me, you’re acting awfully close.”
His cautious gaze matched his questioning words. But Sanemi and Iguro weren’t surprised by his reaction. Who wouldn’t? They really had treated him badly. As the two glanced at each other, Iguro stepped forward.
“We’ve started to realize we judged you wrongly.”
It was best to speak directly without beating around the bush. Sanemi wasn’t good at these kinds of conversations, but he nodded, thinking about what to say.
“I guess your quick rise annoyed us. You caught Kagaya-sama’s attention, and I was jealous.”
He admitted it. He valued Kagaya-sama greatly himself, so he could say his prejudice had come from that. Tomioka’s gaze softened at their words, and he quietly nodded.
“I see… I’ve been a thorn in your side, then. I’m sorry for making you feel that way, Shinazugawa, Iguro.”
Sanemi couldn’t understand—why was he apologizing? They were the ones who had been rude. Tomioka had always been respectful, and while that had irritated him, it was still the truth.
“It seems Kaburamaru doesn’t want to leave you. Let’s have some tea together, Tomioka.”
Iguro suddenly offered. Sanemi wasn’t surprised; he just nodded. Iguro lived with him anyway and could do as he pleased in the estate.
“Me?”
Tomioka looked startled. But both men nodded at once. Though his blue eyes flickered with hesitation, he slowly nodded too. It was nice that he accepted.
---
Giyuu was still bewildered by everything that had happened. Now, in Shinazugawa’s estate, he sat on the floor, staring at the tea in front of him. Iguro and Shinazugawa sat directly across from him. Stroking the head of the snake rubbing against his cheek, he let out a shaky breath.
“Kaburamaru really likes you.”
And Giyuu really liked the snake too. Other than his crow, it was the first animal to ever be so close to him. He honestly enjoyed it.
“It’s really a clever snake.”
He murmured as he took a sip of his tea. His heart was pounding fast. He didn’t want anyone to hear it, but across from him sat two very striking men. The worst part was—they were together. Giyuu shouldn’t be having foolish thoughts. That would be wrong.
“You look tense.”
At Shinazugawa’s question, Giyuu pressed his lips together. He definitely was tense. He had a few friends among the Hashira, but sitting face-to-face with these two made him feel strange.
“It still feels strange to be here… we never got along from the start.”
He blew at the strands of hair falling into his face while sipping his tea, but it was pointless. He liked his hair, but taking care of it was such a hassle that sometimes he thought about cutting it. He wasn’t sure how he’d look with short hair, though. Would it suit him? He hoped it would, but he wasn’t sure.
“You’re right… this is strange for all of us.”
Giyuu looked carefully at the two men. Both of their eyes were fixed on him, as if they wouldn’t look away. The black-haired young man pressed his lips together again as his hair fell over his face once more.
“So… does this mean we’re starting to be friends now?”
He tried not to get his hopes up. Just because he was drinking tea with them here didn’t mean things would suddenly be fine, right?
“Do you want that?”
At Iguro’s question, he gripped his cup tighter and nodded. He wanted to get along with all of them. Yes, Sabito had been a crushing disappointment, but he knew always being alone wasn’t good. So even if he was shy, he nodded. As he did, his hair fell and covered both his eyes—then something happened.
Shinazugawa and Iguro both reached out at the same time, tucking his hair behind his ears. Giyuu swallowed hard at that moment… both men leaning in so close.
“Then let’s be friends.”
Shinazugawa said, still leaning close. Giyuu should’ve been happy at the news. And he was. But the problem was—he didn’t only want to be friends.

Chapter Text
Time always felt strange to Giyuu. Ever since the day he had spent at the Wind Estate, Shinazugawa and Iguro had started treating him with more kindness. At the very least, they no longer shouted at him or picked fights. Of course, the change had begun to catch the attention of the other Hashira, but Giyuu had said nothing. He had no desire to anger those two. Not at all.
Now he was in his own quarters, lying in bed and staring at the ceiling. His cat-like ears twitched at every sound from outside, and he let out a quiet sigh of peace. He wore only his night yukata, feeling comfortably at ease.
Then, with the sound of a familiar voice outside, his ears perked and his sigh caught in his throat. It was Mitsuri. Sometimes she came to visit him, and sometimes he went to the Love Estate. Her friendship was a comfort.
“Giyuu! Are you inside?”
Startled, he shot up, snatched his uniform, and willed his hybrid features to vanish. His lips parted.
“I’ll be right there!”
He dressed quickly, slung his haori over his shoulders, grabbed his katana, and slid open the door. On the other side was Mitsuri, smiling brightly at him.
“Hello, Giyuu! We’re all eating together. Please join us.”
Giyuu took a shaky breath. His relationships with the Hashira were slowly improving. He got along well with Rengoku and Mitsuri, he could even chat with Himejima, and though Muichiro often forgot his existence, that was fine. Shinobu didn’t seem to like him much—he had always preferred Kanae anyway. As for Shinazugawa and Iguro… he hadn’t seen them for a few days.
“Uh… sure.”
But with Mitsuri looking at him so eagerly, there was no way he could refuse. She squealed and pulled him along, chatting nonstop. All Giyuu could do was listen as she spoke for nearly fifteen minutes straight. Finally, one question made his ears burn.
“You seem to be getting along much better with Shinazugawa and Iguro, Giyuu. How did that happen?”
His lips pressed together. He was still surprised himself. It all felt like some strange dream.
“It was after I stayed at the Butterfly Estate. I spent a few days with Kagaya-sama, and on my way back home, I ran into them. They said they realized they’d misjudged me. Then… we had tea together at the Wind Estate. Since then, things have been better, I suppose.”
It might have been the longest conversation he’d ever managed. Mitsuri listened with shining eyes and clapped her hands in delight.
“I’m so glad! I’ve noticed they keep looking at you. And you look back at them, too.”
Heat flooded Giyuu’s face, and he turned away. So it was that obvious…
“Oh, you’re blushing! Giyuu, do you feel something for them?”
Her voice softened toward the end, but it only made him blush harder. He lowered his gaze, clenching his fists inside the long sleeves of his haori. Was he really that easy to read? It was wrong, he knew it was wrong.
“I know it’s strange… It will pass.”
Saying it hurt, but it had to be true. The two of them were together. They loved each other. He couldn’t feel that way about them. It was wrong.
“But Giyuu… the way they look at you isn’t ordinary. I’ve never seen them show that kind of attention to anyone else—especially not both of them at once.”
He lifted his head, meeting Mitsuri’s earnest gaze. She might have been obsessed with love, but she didn’t lie. He knew that much.
“But they’re together, Mitsuri. Isn’t that… strange?”
He asked in confusion, only for her to giggle and suddenly reach out to pinch his cheeks. He flushed scarlet. Why did she always do that?
“Yes, but they keep staring at you! Besides, Tengen has three wives. If anything, that’s what’s strange. I know this feels confusing to you, but trust me—when it comes to love, I’m never wrong.”
And Giyuu decided he would trust her. Mitsuri had always been kind to him, even before he became a Hashira. She used to greet him often, offering small kindnesses he never forgot. So he chose to believe her… and to watch those two men more closely. Maybe he could find a clue.
---
When Mitsuri and Tomioka arrived, Obanai’s gaze immediately settled on the black-haired one. They hadn’t crossed paths in days. The Love Hashira greeted everyone with her usual cheer, while Tomioka only gave a silent nod before sitting in the lone empty seat beside Rengoku. The Flame Hashira immediately struck up a lively conversation with him, leaving Obanai stiff beside his lover. He couldn’t deny it—he felt the same tension himself.
As meals were ordered, Rengoku’s energy never waned. He and Mitsuri and Tengen always carried the conversation. Tomioka ate quietly, only making the smallest comments now and then, almost as silent as Muichirou.
“Tomioka, you have to try this!”
With enthusiasm, Rengoku held out one of the dumplings from his dish. Kaburamaru hissed, disapproving. The snake disliked this just as much as Obanai did. In Kaburamaru’s mind, Giyuu belonged to him. Odd, perhaps—but who was Obanai to question his own snake?
“Ah, thank you…”
Surprised, Giyuu accepted the offering and took a bite. Rengoku laughed warmly, slinging an arm around his shoulders.
“We should train together! I’d love to see your skills. What do you say?”
Giyuu’s lips parted, uncertain, but Obanai cut in first.
“He already promised to train with us, Rengoku.”
That wasn’t true—they hadn’t agreed to anything. But Obanai hadn’t been able to stop himself.
“Yeah, we’re going to push him hard,” Sanemi added gruffly, stabbing at his noodles.
Was this jealousy? If so, it was absurd. And yet… undeniable.
“Oh, I see! Another time, then!” Rengoku’s cheer never faltered.
Obanai let out a discreet breath of relief. Under the table, Sanemi’s hand squeezed his own. They were both far too possessive, and in that moment, Obanai’s gaze locked with Giyuu’s. The boy’s wide eyes gave nothing away—but he didn’t protest, didn’t disrupt the balance.
Good. Obanai was satisfied with that.
Notes:
Up next: the Swordsmith Village and maybe some hot spring scenes? Let’s find out :)
Chapter Text
Sanemi and Obanai had decided to visit the swordsmith village since their blades had dulled. Besides, the hot springs there were said to have healing properties, which would surely do their tired bodies some good.
At first, they had planned to invite Tomioka as well, but the Water Pillar had gone on a mission a week earlier, and no one knew when he would return.
A while ago, after an unplanned training match that came up during dinner, they had actually sparred for real — and to be fair, Tomioka was really good. He had stayed calm through every attack and never hesitated to counter.
“Rengoku’s closeness was really annoying.”
Murmuring, Sanemi glanced at his boyfriend beside him. He already knew Obanai had felt the same. Of course, the Flame Hashira had meant well, but they were both pretty possessive.
“Yeah... though Tomioka didn’t show much emotion. I think he was just being polite.”
That was true. Considering how cheerful Rengoku was, Tomioka really hadn’t had much of a choice anyway. Sanemi sighed as they approached the hot spring, grabbing the towel from his bag.
“Whatever, let’s just get in.”
They both needed to relax, so after taking off their uniforms and wrapping towels around their waists, they headed toward the springs. However, just as they had expected, they weren’t alone.
Someone was already in the water — their back turned, long black hair flowing down their shoulders. Both Hashira immediately recognized who it was.
“Tomioka?”
The young man flinched, turning his head toward them, looking just as surprised as they were. His hair was wet and clung to his face, small cuts marked his cheek and forehead — probably from the demon he had fought. Other than that, he seemed fine.
“Shinazugawa, Iguro? I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Neither had they. The two men exchanged a glance, dropped their towels, and stepped into the water. Sanemi smirked when he noticed Tomioka avoiding his gaze — he could tell the boy was embarrassed.
“We came to get our swords reforged. What about you?”
Obanai spoke, leaning back a bit, keeping a small distance from the Water Pillar. The water reached just below Tomioka’s shoulders, and honestly, he looked breathtaking.
“Same here. My blade broke because of a demon’s Blood Art. I’ll be staying for a few days.”
The slight pout on his face was oddly adorable. As Sanemi watched him closely, Tomioka lifted a hand to push back his damp hair.
“But I guess it worked out... I’ve never had the chance to try these hot springs before.”
He smiled faintly, tracing his fingers through the water’s surface. Sanemi took a deep breath and slowly began moving closer to him — Obanai right by his side — until the two of them stood on either side of the Water Pillar.
"You're hurt."
When their gaze dropped slightly at Obanai's voice, they saw the cut under his arm. Thankfully, it didn't look too bad. However, the black-haired one looked at them as if surprised by the sudden appearance and began to blush deeply.
"Just a small wound..."
All three of them were touching each other. Sanemi felt his hands tingle as he slowly raised his right hand and touched the mark on the boy's cheek. The attraction between the three of them had been undeniable since the moment they trained together.
"You should take care of yourself, right, Obanai?"
Obanai nodded and placed his hand on Tomioka's waist through the water. Now they could both hear his breathing quickening in the water column. He ran his tongue across his pale pink lips, as if trying to understand what was happening. There was a sparkle in his blue eyes, and Sanemi couldn't help but kiss Tomioka. A cheerful hum escaped Obanai's mouth.
Nothing happened for the first few seconds, but when Tomioka started to respond, Sanemi decided to savor it. Tomioka was beautiful, so beautiful and delicate. He and Obanai never wanted to stop talking about the water column. Tomioka's kiss was awkward, but that was okay. It was clearly his first kiss, and Sanemi had thoroughly enjoyed it.
"You're having fun, aren't you?"
Obanai murmured as he pulled back to catch his breath. Still caressing Tomioka's waist, his fingers began to trail downward. The young man was beginning to blush, but he didn't pull away. Despite his bandaged face, he pressed his lips to Tomioka's shoulder as Sanemi stepped forward, pushing him back, pressing himself against him.
"Wait..."
Sanemi was frozen by the presence of something he felt, or rather, something he should have felt but wasn't there. Tomioka had warned him, but it was too late.
"Tomioka... yours?"
Tomioka blushed as she pointed downward, burying her face in her hands and taking a deep breath.
"I need to explain this... I..."
His voice was barely audible, but they both heard it. Obanai seemed to guess what had happened from Sanemi's gaze. Tomioka didn't have a penis.
"I... well..."
The column of water, still trying to speak, must have finally given up, because it lowered its hands. Seconds later, a pair of cat ears sprouted from its black hair and a furry tail sprouted from the boy's back. The two men's gazes were filled with astonishment.
"I'm a hybrid... I have catlike features. So, I'm sort of female."
And now it was clear. Tomioka's genitals were female-shaped. The thought made both men shudder, and Sanemi raised his hand to touch the black ears. The purring sound from the back of Tomioka's throat intoxicated him.
"You're so beautiful..."
He whispered as he leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on her lips. He could see Tomioka shivering and relaxing at the same time.
"You're unique,"
Obanai said, gently touching Tomioka's tail. The catboy's sudden twitch gave them both some rather mischievous thoughts.
"Then giyuu..."
Sanemi looked into the boy's slightly numb blue eyes as he said his name, then leaned down and brushed his lips against his neck.
"Does that mean you can take both of us at the same time?"
The boy's trembling voice was actually enough of an answer. As Sanemi and Obanai leaned into the water column, the lust intensified between the three of them. They were alone, their emotions intense, and they wouldn't stop.
Chapter Text
When Sanemi opened his eyes, sunlight illuminated the room they were in. The scarred man yawned and looked to the side. There he was, lying between him and Obanai. His long hair cascaded down his bare back. He also had those adorable cat ears, which he was still a little surprised by, but were so cute. His back was close to Sanemi's, and he was holding Obanai's hand. Giyuu looked beautiful. Moreover, despite his distaste for the scar, Obanai had uncovered his face, and Giyuu had simply kissed him. Sanemi smiled to himself, still gazing at the still-sleeping boy. Just then, Obanai opened his eyes and smiled at the sight of Giyuu's sweet sleeping face.
"It's a beautiful morning."
Sanemi agreed. They had had a wonderful night and woken up to a beautiful morning.
"Let's let him sleep, and we'll make something for breakfast. We'll help him wash up when he wakes up."
Obanai nodded and stood, smoothing Giyuu's hair back. The two Hashira quickly dressed and left their house for breakfast. They just hadn't anticipated arriving later than expected.
--
When Giyuu opened his eyes, he realized he was exhausted and his body ached. When he opened them fully, he groaned, remembering what had happened and feeling himself blush deeply. Sanemi and Obanai's kisses and touches had been so sweet... Giyuu had been in their arms all night, and finally, he had fallen asleep. He sat up, propped up by their hands, and looked around. Neither man was in sight. Looking closely, he noticed his belongings were gone, too.
"Sanemi? Obanai?"
He called out to them both, but received no answer. There wasn't a single sound in the house... He wrapped the blanket tightly around himself as he took a shaky breath, his tail wrapped sadly around his waist. Had they left? Why weren't they here? Tears welled up in his eyes at the awful feeling of waking up alone after their night together. He didn't want to think negative thoughts, but he couldn't help it. His shoulders trembled slightly, and he tried to calm himself. Had they left? None of their belongings were here... Had they already left the village? Giyu didn't understand.
"Giyuu."
The black-haired boy immediately looked up when he heard the deep voice. Two Hashira stood before him, holding several bags. Seconds later, when they both bent down, Obanai reached out and wiped a tear from his cheek.
"Why are you crying?"
Giyuu averted his eyes in shame. Had he miscalculated? How foolish! If he had waited a little longer, he would have seen them.
"Does it hurt?"
Obanai asked, and Giyuu simply nodded. It hurt, of course, but not enough to cry.
"I thought you were gone."
He bowed his head in shame as he spoke. When both men remained silent, Giyu began to consider throwing himself off a platform.
"We won't leave you."
He felt a hand on his chin, took a shaky breath, and raised his head. Sanemi looked quite serious.
"That's impossible, Giyuu, after what we went through last night."
Gyiu took a shaky breath and muttered affirmations. Perhaps that was what he needed to hear. His opinion on this matter was important to him.
"Even though we started off badly, we're together now, Giyuu."
Gyiu nodded as he looked at Obanai. They were together, right? Giyuu could have been with either of them... They had accepted him. He shifted slightly, moved closer, and gently leaned against them. He felt better this way.
"Let's have breakfast. Then we'll help you wash up."
Gyiu smiled. He was actually starting to enjoy this kind of attention.
"I'm actually very hungry."
And as he reached for the bags, his tail and ears twitched simultaneously. He felt both men sigh, but he couldn't understand why. -
Giyuu closed his eyes as he sat on Sanemi's lap. He could feel Obanai scrubbing his body and Sanemi washing his hair. He could have showered alone, but after the rough night they'd just had, he'd decided that wasn't feasible.
"Feeling better?"
Gyiu nodded when the Serpent Pillar spoke. He was still embarrassed to be so close to the two of them, but he knew he'd get over it in time.
"Yeah, I'm fine. The hot water felt good."
He felt great. The hot water was massaging his body, and he felt very pampered. He wasn't complaining.
"So..."
Giyuu mumbled when he felt the two men staring at him. Sanemi bent his head down to see his face.
"Am I going out with you?"
They'd said they were together, but Giyuu wanted something specific. Being with two men at once seemed strange, but who cared? Tengen had three wives, and no one said anything.
"Yes, we are."
When Sanemi spoke, Giyuu focused on him. He could feel Obanai's hand on his leg.
When Sanemi spoke, Giyuu focused on him. He could feel Obanai's hand on his leg.
"When we return, we'll treat you just like we do now, Giyuu. You belong to us now."
Then, when he placed a small kiss on his lips, Giyuu looked at them both. His blue eyes were shining, and he felt so good.
"And we have no intention of sharing you with anyone."
Chapter Text
It had been a few weeks since Sanemi and Obanai told the others about their relationship with Giyuu.
At first, everyone had been quite surprised, but soon enough, they’d gotten used to it.
Rengoku and Mitsuri, of course, had been overjoyed.
Tengen gave them a knowing look, while Muichiro—unsurprisingly—said nothing.
Himejima and Kagaya-sama had congratulated them warmly.
Since then, Giyuu would sit beside them during meetings, and most of the time, he would visit the Wind Estate.
Neither of the two Hashira had mentioned anything about him moving in yet—they wanted to be sure Giyuu truly wanted that.
But there was something else they’d been curious about…
And they had actually been discussing it for the past few days.
> “I think he can do it,”
Obanai had said while sitting with Sanemi at the Wind Mansion, waiting for the Water Hashira to arrive.
> “Are you sure? That sounds a bit far-fetched,”
Sanemi replied, taking a sip of his tea.
Obanai rolled his eyes. It definitely wasn’t.
> “We’ll ask him when he gets here. I’m sure he can.”
Speaking with confidence, Obanai leaned back, while Sanemi merely shrugged.
Both were genuinely curious, though, so they continued chatting about other things as they drank their tea.
After a while, they heard familiar footsteps approaching, and then they saw a figure appear at the door.
Tomioka Giyuu, in all his quiet grace, entered the Wind Mansion.
> “Hello,”
he greeted softly, smiling faintly as he sat down in front of them.
Both men leaned forward and placed a quick kiss on his lips.
They loved hearing the soft hums of contentment that escaped him whenever they did that.
> “You’re a bit late,”
Sanemi said, pouring him a cup of tea.
Giyuu nodded in response.
> “Yes, sorry about that. I ran into Tengen and his wives on the way. He insisted on introducing every one of them and singing their praises.”
Sanemi and Obanai rolled their eyes in unison.
Of course Tengen could talk endlessly when it came to his wives.
No wonder Giyuu was late.
> “If he could, he’d keep you there until nightfall.”
Obanai grumbled, watching as Kaburamaru slithered down from his shoulder toward Giyuu.
Giyuu immediately picked up the snake gently and began stroking its head, and Obanai couldn’t help but smile at the sight.
> “So, Giyuu… we wanted to ask you something,”
Sanemi finally said, drawing Giyuu’s curious blue eyes to them.
Obanai leaned back casually, still confident in his earlier claim.
> “Is something wrong?”
Hearing the concern in Giyuu’s voice, they both shook their heads.
Obanai didn’t want to make him worry, so he just asked directly:
> “We know you’re a hybrid. But can you… fully transform into a cat?”
Both men looked at their smaller boyfriend with eager anticipation.
Giyuu blinked, clearly caught off guard by the question, and took a few seconds before answering.
Finally, he took a sip of his tea.
> “Yes, I can.”
Obanai gave Sanemi a triumphant I told you so look, feeling very pleased with himself.
He could already see the excitement flickering in his partner’s eyes as well.
> “Can you show us?”
Of course, they wanted to see it.
Giyuu with cat ears and a tail was already adorable—his full cat form had to be even cuter.
> “Of course.”
Giyuu chuckled softly, placing the white snake carefully on the floor so it could return to its owner.
> “But afterward, I’ll probably be really tired… so I’ll fall asleep. Close your eyes now.”
That was no problem; they’d spent plenty of time together, and Giyuu had fallen asleep beside them many times before.
So they both closed their eyes at the same time and waited.
About a minute later, Obanai felt a light touch on his lap and opened his eyes—only to gasp softly.
Giyuu was now slightly larger than a kitten, with fluffy, pitch-black fur and those same stunning blue eyes.
> “You’re beautiful,”
he whispered, carefully lifting Giyuu into his hands.
Sanemi came closer, reaching out to stroke the little creature’s head.
The soft purring that followed made both of them melt.
> “It’s unfair how good you look, Giyuu.”
Obanai completely agreed.
But it didn’t matter—after all, Giyuu was theirs, and that was that.
> “You’re adorable in every form. But this one’s extra cute.”
Obanai smiled as he scratched under Giyuu’s chin, feeling the tiny paws curl gently around his finger, as if asking him not to stop.
> “So spoiled, huh?”
Giyuu nodded—well, as much as a cat could—and Sanemi laughed, taking one of his paws gently to rub the center.
> “You deserve to be spoiled. We’ll give you all the attention you want.”
And they did.
Every time they pulled their hands away, they were rewarded with the cutest little mewls.
Eventually, Giyuu, still in his cat form, curled up beside Kaburamaru and fell asleep.
A cat and a snake—apparently friends now.
---
While cleaning the Water Mansion later, a faint smile played on Giyuu’s lips.
His relationship with Sanemi and Obanai was going well.
Seeing how genuinely kind and understanding they were beneath their rough exteriors made him happy.
He had slowly opened up to them, explaining his own behavior and showing that he never saw himself as superior.
Thankfully, it hadn’t taken long for them to work through their misunderstandings.
That day, both men had gone on a mission together and would be back in two days.
So Giyuu had returned to his own mansion.
As he continued tidying up, a sudden wave of nausea hit him hard, and he barely made it to the bathroom in time.
He gripped the wall weakly as he threw up everything he had eaten that morning.
He hated vomiting—more than anything.
After several minutes, he finally finished, rinsing his mouth and drinking a large glass of water to wash away the awful taste.
It was definitely unpleasant—and he felt exhausted.
> “Am I getting sick?”
He took a shaky breath, rubbing the back of his neck as he walked back into the living room.
He didn’t think he was ill—he took good care of himself.
> “Mission! Mission!”
The sudden caw of his crow, Kanzaburo, startled him.
The old bird swooped in through the window and landed on his head, which didn’t surprise Giyuu anymore.
> “A demon attacked the village! You need to go to the northern side! The northern side!”
Giyuu sighed deeply.
He was still feeling weak, but he could manage.
He wouldn’t let more people die.
> “I’ll head out right away, Kanzaburo.”
And with that, he went to his room to prepare.
His stomach still churned faintly, but nothing like before.
After the mission, he’d stop by Kanae’s place and ask her to check on him—just to be sure.
Chapter Text
It had been two days since Giyuu had left for his mission.
Obanai and Sanemi knew their boyfriend was supposed to return today, so they began walking toward the entrance of their region. He should be arriving any moment now.
“Let’s ask him to live with us at the Wind Mansion,” Sanemi said as they approached the gate.
They’d been talking about it for days — and both wanted Giyuu by their side.
“The room we have is pretty big already,” Obanai added, agreeing with his partner. “We’d just need a slightly larger one.”
They were certain Giyuu would say yes. It would be nice, wouldn’t it?
Sanemi couldn’t help but smile — until he noticed a crow flying above them.
“Isn’t that Kanzaburou?”
Obanai was right. If Giyuu’s crow was here, the Water Hashira must have finally returned. But… why did the bird look so panicked?
“Help! Help! Giyuu is injured!”
Both of them froze.
Injured — the crow had said injured. If it weren’t serious, it wouldn’t be calling for help like that… would it? Where was Giyuu?
“Take us to him — now!”
And Kanzaburou obeyed. Sanemi and Obanai ran after the crow, hearts pounding with worry. What could have happened? Giyuu was always so careful on missions.
Their thoughts stopped when they spotted a collapsed figure in the distance.
It was a terrifying sight.
“Giyuu!”
They rushed to his side. Blood had soaked his uniform and haori, and his skin was pale as snow. The fact that he had made it this far was a miracle in itself… but his heartbeat was faint — too faint.
“We need to get him to Kanae, now,” Sanemi said, lifting Giyuu into his arms.
Obanai followed close behind, his gaze fixed on Giyuu’s motionless face.
“Let’s go… hold on, Giyuu.”
He would hold on. He always did. Giyuu was strong — he had proven that countless times.
---
It had been almost two hours since they’d brought him to the Butterfly Estate.
Kanae hadn’t come out yet, and both Hashira were waiting anxiously. If something terrible had happened, surely she would’ve told them already… right?
But she hadn’t said anything — not good, not bad.
Just as they were about to knock again, the door opened, and Kanae gestured for them to come in.
They hurried inside. Giyuu lay unconscious on the bed, an IV line attached to his arm.
“His wounds aren’t too bad,” Kanae said gently, “but the blood loss caused serious strain. And then there’s the effect of his Eleventh Form.”
The two men exchanged confused looks.
Why would Giyuu’s breathing form be an issue?
Thankfully, Kanae continued.
“Giyuu created a form of his own — and it’s incredibly powerful. But… each time he uses it, his heartbeat drops to a dangerously low level. That’s why he rarely uses it unless there’s no other choice. It seems this time, he had to.”
She paused briefly, her eyes lingering on Giyuu’s still body.
“He’ll likely sleep for a few days. His body needs time to recover. But…” she hesitated, her tone shifting, “there’s something else.”
Kanae’s eyes were sharp and serious now.
Sanemi and Obanai both felt relief — finding Giyuu alive had already eased the worst of their fear — but that last part left them uneasy.
“What is it? He’s not… permanently injured, is he?” Obanai asked, his voice trembling slightly as he reached out and held Giyuu’s hand.
Kanae shook her head slowly.
"No, it's not. You already know Giyuu is a half-breed. You also know he's like a woman." Both men couldn't help but blush. What did their personal lives have to do with it? Thankfully, Kanae ignored it.
"What I'm trying to say is, Giyuu is pregnant. I think she's a few weeks along. The baby doesn't seem to be at risk right now, but it's probably tiring Giyuu out, so if you decide to keep the baby, you're in for a rough ride."
At first, they couldn't grasp it. They looked from Kanae to Giyuu, who lay unconscious on the bed. He was oblivious to everything; neither they nor he could have predicted it.
"So... he's carrying our baby right now?"
Sanemi felt his breath catch. He'd never considered having children, and neither had Obanai. Now they were going to have a baby. What would Giyuu think about it? The uncertainties were immense.
"Yeah, right. Wait for Giyuu to wake up before we talk. I'll leave you two alone for now."
And Kanae had gone out. She sat on a stool while the two men remained there. Giyuu was still unconscious, but his expression was peaceful, which was a good thing. And he was pregnant. Pregnant.
"So... what do we do?"
Sanemi sighed. He didn't know. He didn't know how Giyuu would react when he found out about the baby. He didn't know what he was thinking. Not at all.
"It's best to wait for Giyuu to wake up and then decide."
It was the right thing to do. Besides, Giyuu needed a long rest. He must be very tired.
"I never thought about having children."
Actually, neither had he. It wouldn't have been possible with the two of them together anyway. Sanemi took a deep breath and held her boyfriend's hand. This news was truly unexpected.
"Me too. So let's think about this until Giyuu wakes up. He'll need us anyway."
Kanae had said he wouldn't wake up until tomorrow. They had plenty of time to talk, to think things through and make the right decision.
Chapter Text
When Giyuu opened his eyes, he wasn’t surprised to find himself in the Butterfly Mansion.
He remembered barely making it back to the region where his house was… and then collapsing.
Now, there was an IV in his arm. He felt exhausted, though the pain was faint.
He tried to sit up — barely managing to do so — when the door opened.
Seeing Sanemi and Obanai step in made him release a quiet sigh of relief.
“Giyuu.”
The two men immediately came closer, and before he knew it, they were both hugging him at once.
Giyuu leaned into their warmth, murmuring softly to himself. Somehow, the fatigue he felt began to fade away, replaced by something softer — comfort.
“You really scared us, you know? Do you have any idea how worried we were?”
As their hands ran through his hair and across his back, he only mumbled faintly in response.
There wasn’t much he could say about that.
“I’m sorry… I did everything I could, but I was so tired. I’m fine now, really.”
He lifted his head to look at them and smiled — he didn’t want them to keep worrying.
But the moment a wave of nausea hit him, that smile vanished.
“I need to get up… I think I’m going to be sick.”
He covered his mouth with a trembling hand. He had just woken up and hadn’t eaten anything — why did his stomach feel so uneasy?
Sanemi quickly scooped him up and carried him to the bathroom. Within seconds, Giyuu was on his knees, emptying his stomach.
He hated this. Throwing up was disgusting.
“Are you alright, Giyuu?”
Obanai’s gentle voice reached him as they returned to the room. Giyuu nodded weakly and sat back on the bed. His stomach had settled a little.
It had been like this even before his last mission, and during it too.
“Lately, I’ve been feeling really nauseous… I can’t figure out why.”
He noticed the two men exchange a quick glance. That was… strange. Maybe he’d just caught a cold, right? He had been exhausted lately.
“There’s actually something we need to talk to you about, Giyuu. Kanae told us.”
That was when worry began to creep up his spine.
What did that mean? Had his injuries been worse than he thought?
But then why didn’t he feel any pain?
Without realizing, his nails dug into his palms — until two hands gently took his.
“Easy. It’s nothing bad. At least not for us — and we hope you won’t think of it that way either.”
Obanai’s words only deepened his confusion.
If it wasn’t bad, then what was it?
“You’re pregnant, Giyuu.”
Oh.
That… was definitely not what he had been expecting.
Not even close.
He was… pregnant?
---
For several long minutes, Giyuu just stared silently at his two partners, eyes wide with shock.
They had said he was pregnant — and they looked completely serious. Kanae had confirmed it, too.
Giyuu had always known, deep inside, that a part of him longed for a child someday. But he’d never imagined that would actually happen — not like this, not now.
“So… we’re going to have a baby.”
He blinked and looked down, slowly placing a trembling hand over his stomach.
Was it possible to already feel something there? It almost felt like it.
“Yes… we are.”
Giyuu looked back up at them. There was no hesitation in their expressions — no anger, no doubt.
They looked… happy.
He swallowed hard, though he still had to ask:
“This isn’t a problem for you, right? Do you… want the baby?”
He knew neither of them had ever really talked about children.
They were both warriors — fighters. He’d understand if they didn’t want to be tied down.
“You’re right — we’ve never really thought about having a baby before,” Obanai said, and Giyuu felt his breath catch.
Then Sanemi continued, his voice softer than usual.
“But we have to think about it now, don’t we? Because we do have a baby. And if you want to keep them, Giyuu… we’ll be right here with you. Just like always.”
Giyuu’s eyes filled with tears. He leaned forward, arms trembling as he tried to hug both of them at once.
He’d been so afraid — the thought of having to raise the baby without them, even for a moment, had terrified him.
“I do want to keep the baby… but I don’t know what to say to Kagaya-sama.”
He truly didn’t know how their leader would take it.
He wouldn’t be angry — Giyuu knew that. But what if he was disappointed?
That was one of Giyuu’s greatest fears.
“Kagaya-sama is here, Giyuu. He was waiting for you to wake up.”
So it was happening now.
A few minutes later, Kagaya-sama and Amane-san entered the room.
Sanemi and Obanai stepped aside as the couple sat down.
“Giyuu, how are you feeling, my child?”
Kagaya-sama’s voice was as gentle as ever.
Giyuu nodded slowly, doing his best not to rest his hands over his stomach — though it was becoming an instinct already.
“I’m alright, sir. I’m sorry for troubling you to come all this way.”
He bowed his head slightly in respect.
He hated that Kagaya-sama had to come while he was ill, but there was no helping it.
“Don’t think like that. It was important for me to see you. Kanae told us about your condition — and the baby.”
Heat rose to Giyuu’s cheeks. Talking about this felt… embarrassing, somehow.
Still, there wasn’t much he could do about it.
“Yes, sir…”
He didn’t know what else to say — until he felt Amane-san take his hand.
When he looked up, she was smiling warmly at him, and that alone made his chest feel lighter.
“We were surprised by the news, but we’re very happy for you — for all of you.”
The sincerity in her voice made Giyuu’s shoulders relax.
Their approval meant more to him than words could express.
“We also sent a letter to Urokodaki-sensei. He’ll come to visit you soon.”
Of course.
His teacher needed to know. The man who had saved and trained him deserved to share in this news.
“But… the baby will keep me from doing my duties.”
Finally, Giyuu gave voice to his deepest worry. His eyes met Kagaya’s, full of fear that he might disappoint him.
“Giyuu, you and the child you carry are far more important. You’ve made me proud as a Hashira countless times.
Stepping away from your duties for a while won’t change that — not in the slightest.
And besides… waiting to meet the newest member of our family will be something beautiful.”
Kagaya-sama’s words were so full of warmth that Giyuu couldn’t help but smile.
His hand found its way to his stomach again — and for the first time, he let himself truly feel the excitement blooming in his chest.
When he turned to look at Sanemi and Obanai, both were gazing at him with such affection that it almost brought tears to his eyes again.
They really were becoming a family.
“I can’t wait to see the day they’re born.”
Chapter Text
Giyuu had completely recovered and moved permanently into the Wind Mansion.
Having him constantly in sight comforted the two Hashira, since Kanae had told them this process would be difficult for Giyuu.
She had clearly said that he shouldn’t tire himself out.
Now a little over two months had passed. Giyuu’s belly had started to grow, and Obanai couldn’t take his eyes off it.
It was just a small, cute bump for now, but Kaburamaru had also started to slither around on Giyuu’s stomach all the time.
He had never thought he would have a child — and yet, it was happening.
Would he be a good parent? He would do everything he could to be one.
Besides, it was time to tell the other Hashira.
The fact that Giyuu wasn’t going on missions and was rarely seen around was becoming suspicious.
So, by evening, everyone would come here and they would explain the situation.
“Are you alright?”
While Sanemi was outside training the rookies, Obanai was sitting with Giyuu.
In front of Giyuu was only rice.
Because of his nausea, he couldn’t even eat his beloved salmon dish.
He was quite exhausted from constantly vomiting.
“I’m tired... but the tea helped settle my stomach a little.”
The tea Amane-san had given him really worked like a miracle.
Giyuu drank it several times during the day; at least the intensity of his nausea had lessened.
Otherwise, it could have been much worse.
When Obanai reached out and placed his hand on Giyuu’s belly, the smile that formed on the young man’s face made him even happier.
“ Kanae said this will pass soon. Just a little longer.”
Giyuu nodded slowly, and as Obanai felt his lover’s hand resting over his own, he moved his fingers gently, caressing Giyuu’s stomach.
“I’m nervous about tonight.”
Hearing those words finally come out of Giyuu’s mouth didn’t surprise Obanai.
He knew Giyuu was struggling with this — probably worried about how the others would react.
“No matter what anyone says, Sanemi and I are by your side.”
His voice was firm, and when those blue eyes turned toward him, seeing love and hope in them strengthened Obanai’s resolve even more.
“I don’t think they’ll react badly. It’s just… strange.”
Well, that was understandable.
After all, this wasn’t exactly a common situation. Obanai could understand what he meant.
“They’ll get used to it. Don’t worry about that.”
Just then, Sanemi entered.
Obanai watched him walk over and sit down on the other side.
After the baby matter, Sanemi had softened — though only toward them, of course.
“If anyone says something that upsets you, I’ll kill them.”
Knowing exactly what they were talking about, Giyuu laughed.
He seemed much more at ease now, even started eating the rest of his rice.
When Obanai and Sanemi exchanged glances, both felt relieved.
Giyuu’s health — and the baby’s — were what mattered most.
---
When the time came, everyone was there.
Mitsuri and Giyuu were chatting together, while the others were keeping to themselves — but among them, the most impatient one, Tengen, finally spoke up, and Sanemi wasn’t surprised at all.
“Come on already! Enough with the mystery. I hope whatever you’re gonna say is flashy!”
Sanemi glanced at each of them one by one.
Everyone looked extremely curious.
Well, there was no point in keeping them waiting.
First, they revealed that Giyuu was a hybrid... even that alone was shocking.
Mitsuri practically begged to see Giyuu’s ears.
“And… he’s pregnant. We’re having a baby.”
When he finally dropped the bomb, everyone froze.
Sanemi saw Giyuu nervously place his hand on his stomach.
He reached out and held Giyuu’s free hand.
Then Gyomei started crying and offering prayers, while Rengoku and Mitsuri burst into joyful cheers.
Muichiro, of course, was completely in his own world.
“Wait— I have three wives and no kids yet… how can you beat me to it?!”
With Tengen’s outburst, Sanemi smirked mockingly.
Beating him at something felt amazing, truly. Sanemi loved it.
“I’m afraid there’s nothing you can do about it. The baby’s already over two months along.”
Obanai’s calm voice made Tengen stand up, walk over to them, and place his hands on their shoulders.
“I’m really annoyed at you right now, but congratulations. You too, Tomioka!”
Then he grinned widely, and Sanemi rolled his eyes.
Of course, he would congratulate them — what else could he do?
---
One week later
Kanae and Shinobu had come from the Butterfly Mansion to the Wind Estate.
Kanae was checking on the baby’s development, while Shinobu kept teasing Sanemi.
“So, you’re preparing for fatherhood now, Shinazugawa-san? I hope the baby doesn’t yell as much as you do.”
Sanemi grumbled. “You sound just like my sister. Enough already.”
But he couldn’t hide the redness on his cheeks.
Kanae smiled warmly at Giyuu.
“Everything is progressing perfectly. As long as you don’t stress, there won’t be any problems.”
“Is that even possible with them around?” Giyuu asked, giving Shinobu a pointed look.
Obanai bit his lip to hold back a laugh.
Sanemi chuckled. “If this keeps up, the baby will be stubborn even before being born.”
---
Night had fallen. Giyuu lay in bed, gently stroking his stomach.
“You know... I never used to think I deserved to be loved this much,” he whispered.
Sanemi sat at the edge of the bed, while Obanai stood by the window, petting Kaburamaru.
Without lifting his head, Sanemi murmured,
“You’re not alone anymore, Giyuu. No matter what happens, the three of us are together.”
Obanai quietly added,
“And soon, there’ll be one more.”
Giyuu closed his eyes and smiled.
A tiny movement from deep beneath his heart seemed to whisper to all of them:
You’re home now.
Chapter Text
The sky burned with the rusty hues of a setting sun.
In the distance, the chirping of crickets blended into the silence inside Giyuu’s small house.
They had said they would return days ago.
The mission had taken too long—far too long.
And now, at last, they were back.
But Giyuu didn’t yet know that the warmth spreading through him at the sight of them would soon turn into unease.
The door opened. Sanemi’s breath was sharp and uneven. Blood still stained his shoulder; his sword hung loosely across his back.
Behind him, Obanai walked silently, the white bandages covering his face hiding whatever emotion flickered beneath.
But Giyuu felt their energy instantly.
The air was heavy—so much so that breathing felt difficult.
“Sanemi… Obanai… you’re finally back,” Giyuu said softly, his voice cautious.
His hand instinctively went to his stomach. The roundness beneath his clothes could no longer be hidden.
Sanemi’s eyes darted there—lingered for a moment too long.
The hardness in his face seemed to soften, but only for a second.
“Do you know what kind of mess that swamp was?!” he snapped.
“It was a trap. They sent us there on purpose. It wasn’t demons—it was runaways. And the whole thing was meant to make us turn on each other!”
His voice carried not just anger, but exhaustion… and a hint of helplessness.
Obanai raised a hand, his tone calm but cutting. “Sanemi, yelling won’t help anyone. You know that—”
“Shut up, Obanai!”
Sanemi’s shout hit the walls like a wave.
Giyuu flinched. A sharp twinge rippled through his lower belly. His hands flew there instinctively.
“I just… got scared,” he whispered. But his voice didn’t reach either of them.
Obanai’s eyes narrowed. “Your fear usually ends up crushing everyone around you,” he said coldly.
“At least I don’t hide how I feel!” Sanemi barked back. “I don’t pretend to control everything like you!”
“Maybe someone has to,” Obanai replied evenly, though the tightness at his mouth betrayed his restraint.
Giyuu watched them.
Each word, each breath, each glare squeezed his heart a little tighter.
Something inside him hurt—maybe the hormones, maybe the loneliness he couldn’t seem to escape.
His fingers trembled where they pressed against his stomach.
He felt a faint stir inside—a weak but certain flutter.
A tiny life, quietly moving within him amidst all the noise.
“Enough…” he whispered at last, so softly it almost vanished.
But Sanemi and Obanai didn’t stop.
“Enough!”
This time his voice rose, trembling with tears.
They both froze.
Giyuu’s breath hitched. “While you two are tearing each other apart,” he said, “pieces of you are growing inside me.”
His voice cracked. “While I’m scared out of my mind, you’re bringing the war home.”
Sanemi’s eyes softened instantly. He stepped forward—but Giyuu backed away.
“Giyuu—”
“No,” he said firmly. “Just one day. Can you go one single day without fighting? I’m… I’m scared. Even of you.”
The words seemed to drain the air from the room.
Sanemi’s lips parted, but no words came.
Obanai lowered his head in silence.
Tears slid down Giyuu’s cheeks; his hand never left his belly.
For a while, no one spoke.
Only the wind outside made a sound.
Then Obanai moved closer, kneeling before him. He took Giyuu’s hand gently.
“We didn’t mean to scare you,” he said quietly. “But sometimes… the war doesn’t leave us. It sinks into our bones.”
Sanemi leaned against the wall, burying his hands in his hair.
“Damn it,” he muttered, his voice rough. “Our fighting shouldn’t have broken your heart like this.”
Giyuu trembled from crying but whispered only one thing:
“I don’t want to feel alone anymore.”
Sanemi stepped closer, laying a hand on his shoulder.
This time, Giyuu didn’t pull away.
Obanai joined them, wordless and careful.
For a while, the three of them just stayed there.
Night had fallen outside.
The only sounds in the house were Giyuu’s steady breaths—and the faint rhythm of a tiny heart beating within him.
A heart that belonged to all three of them, yet was its own fragile hope.
---
It was early morning.
The pale sunlight filtered through the curtains, painting half the room in soft gold.
The air was still cool, but the blanket draped over Giyuu brought a warmth that felt like safety.
For a moment, he forgot where he was—then the memories of last night returned.
The argument. The tears. Sanemi’s remorseful face. Obanai’s quiet hand.
But now… the silence was different. Softer.
He felt movement beside him.
Sanemi sat on the edge of the bed, barely breathing so as not to wake him.
His hands rested on his knees, head bowed, dark circles still heavy under his eyes.
Obanai sat by the window, sunlight spilling across his bandaged face as he watched Giyuu.
“I know you’re awake,” Sanemi said in a low voice.
Giyuu smiled faintly, eyes still closed. “How did you know?”
“You change your breathing even when you’re asleep,” Sanemi muttered, scratching his neck in embarrassment.
Obanai stood and walked over quietly.
“You haven’t moved much since last night,” he said. “We… took turns watching you.”
“You watched me?” Giyuu blinked, then chuckled softly.
“Yes,” Obanai replied, a hint of a smile in his voice. “We wanted to see the movements… but I think we were both too afraid.”
Giyuu placed a hand on his belly. Warm. Round. Alive.
“It’s starting to show, isn’t it?” he murmured.
Sanemi reached out, hesitated.
“Do you… want to touch?” Giyuu asked gently.
Sanemi’s eyes met his. “Only if you’ll let me.”
Giyuu nodded.
Sanemi’s rough, calloused hand landed softly on his stomach.
At first, cautious. Then, lightly tracing small circles.
“I can’t believe it,” he whispered. “It’s really there.”
Giyuu smiled. “Yes. Sometimes I can even feel the kicks.”
Obanai knelt beside them. “My turn then.”
When his hand touched, Giyuu drew in a deep breath—
And the baby stirred.
All three froze.
Sanemi’s eyes widened. “It moved!”
A rare look of awe crossed Obanai’s face before he actually smiled. “I think it heard us.”
Tears welled in Giyuu’s eyes. “Maybe it didn’t want you two fighting,” he whispered tenderly.
Sanemi leaned closer, whispering against his belly,
“I promise, little one—I won’t yell at your mother again.”
“And I’ll think twice before arguing,” Obanai added softly.
Giyuu laughed—genuine and warm this time.
“With you two like this… I really am lucky,” he said.
Sanemi touched his shoulder. “No. We’re the lucky ones. You’re the reason we’re still here.”
The air in the room shifted.
The sun climbed higher, golden light spilling over all three of them.
Giyuu rested his head on Sanemi’s shoulder; Obanai’s hand still lingered protectively over his belly.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Only Giyuu’s heartbeat, the soft stirrings within, and the quiet peace of morning filled the space.
After a while, Giyuu whispered,
“Have you thought of a name yet?”
Sanemi immediately looked up. “What, already?”
“It’s not too early,” Obanai said, smiling faintly. “You’ve already got some ideas, don’t you?”
Giyuu blushed. “Maybe a few… but I’m not telling. Not yet.”
Sanemi pouted. “Keeping secrets from us, huh…”
Obanai chuckled. “Patience, Sanemi. Unlike us, he moves with love, not anger.”
“I know,” Sanemi said quietly, eyes softening as they met Giyuu’s. “That’s why I fell in love with him.”
Giyuu froze. His heart skipped a beat. Even Obanai went still for a moment before smirking.
“So you finally said it,” he murmured. “I was waiting to hear that.”
Sanemi’s face flushed red. “Shut up, Obanai.”
Giyuu couldn’t help laughing. “You two are starting again…”
But this time, his voice was full of love, not fear.
And that morning, though the air still held the echo of yesterday’s fight,
for the first time—they truly felt like a family.
A little broken, a little bruised, but still holding on to touch, laughter, and hope.
--
The cool touch of autumn had begun. The wind swayed the paper lanterns on the veranda, and the comforting scent of warm tea drifted from inside.
Giyuu sat on a cushion, wrapped in a thick blanket. His belly had grown round, alive, proud — impossible to hide anymore.
With every breath, he felt the tiny movements inside him; sometimes a faint flutter, sometimes a clear kick. He had grown so used to it that even in silence, he waited for those small signs of life.
But silence was rare now.
Because Sanemi and Obanai lived in the same house.
“Giyuu! Don’t stand up!”
Sanemi’s voice echoed from the hallway.
Giyuu rolled his eyes. “I was just going to grab a book.”
“I’ll get it!”
Two seconds later, Sanemi burst into the room, holding a huge pile of books. “Which one? The yellow one? The blue one? Or maybe I’ll just bring both.”
Obanai slipped in through the doorway, calm as ever. “Sanemi, if you keep rushing like that, Giyuu won’t be the one to faint — you will.”
“Stay out of it. I’ve got this handled.”
“Your ‘handling’ usually ends with something broken.”
“At least I’m doing something!”
Giyuu peeked out from under the blanket, watching them both.
“Please, you two…”
They both fell silent at once.
Then Giyuu gently placed a hand on his belly, a soft smile touching his lips.
“Look — he moved.”
Everything froze in that moment.
Sanemi immediately crouched down, resting his hand carefully on Giyuu’s stomach. Obanai joined him.
When a small kick rippled under his palm, Sanemi’s face lit up with pure, startled joy. “Whoa… strong kick!”
“So he gets that from you,” Obanai said dryly.
Sanemi shot him a glare. “At least he’s not taking after you.”
“I’d prefer if he got his calmness from me,” Obanai countered.
Giyuu chuckled — such a soft, warm sound that even the baby seemed to respond, kicking again.
“I think he likes your arguments,” Giyuu said with a smile.
Sanemi scratched his head. “That’s not good…”
“Maybe he just recognizes your voices,” Giyuu said gently. “He might be responding to the sound of you two.”
A faint spark softened Obanai’s eyes. “So he already knows us, huh?”
“Maybe,” said Giyuu, “but I won’t tell you whose voice he moves to more.”
Sanemi straightened up immediately. “Definitely mine!”
Obanai murmured, “I wouldn’t be so sure.”
Giyuu looked at them both. “I’ll tell you one day,” he said with a teasing smile.
Sanemi still hadn’t lifted his hand. “Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine. My back just aches a little.”
Sanemi moved behind him at once. “Here, I’ve got it.”
“Sanemi—”
Too late. Sanemi had already placed his hands on Giyuu’s shoulders and started massaging gently.
Obanai folded his arms. “Your idea of gentle usually leaves bruises.”
“He’s never complained once!”
“That’s because he’s too scared to.”
“What did you just—”
Giyuu’s soft laughter silenced them again.
“I love you both,” he said suddenly — so sincerely, so calmly that the air in the room seemed to shift.
Sanemi’s hands froze. Obanai looked up.
“Really…” Giyuu continued, “sometimes when I’m with you two, my fears disappear. The battles, the past — everything. Only this moment remains.”
A brief silence fell.
Then Sanemi leaned closer and whispered, “Then we’ll protect this moment.”
Obanai stepped forward and took Giyuu’s hand. “And we’ll never let anything near you that could make you cry again.”
At that instant, the baby moved again — stronger this time, as if responding to their words.
All three looked at each other, then laughed softly.
Sanemi bent down, whispering near Giyuu’s stomach, “Your mother has a beautiful laugh, you know that, little one?”
Obanai added teasingly, “And one of your fathers never shuts up.”
Giyuu couldn’t help laughing. “You’re already talking over each other — soon he’ll join in, and I’ll be the quiet one.”
Sanemi grinned. “Then the three of us will talk, and you can just rest.”
“Maybe,” said Giyuu, smiling, “but I’m sure he’ll pick a side to take after.”
“Mine,” said Sanemi.
“No, mine,” Obanai replied.
And the bickering began again — but this time, between laughter, warmth, and love echoing through the house.
As the baby kicked rhythmically, none of them said it aloud, but they all knew the same truth:
This tiny life had become the bond that tied them together — stronger than fear, louder than war, and gentler than any promise.
