You Promised
It was finally over. The nightmare was over, the zombies were pushed back, the military was cleaning up, everything seemed to go on perfectly and yet, I had no reason to celebrate.
“Still no signs of him?” I leaned over and looked at Asagi, but she shook her head. This military vehicle we were in was not very comfortable but was better than the streets.
“No, we haven’t found any survivor or zombie that fits his description yet.” She said and I sighed, looking at Haruka, who looked at me with questioning eyes. I haven’t told her yet. I haven’t found the right words or the right timing to let her know what had happened and that I wanted to find Majima to, MAYBE, blow his head off because he, MAYBE, was a fucking zombie by now.
“I have told the men that if they come across him, to just capture and not kill him, since its you who shall end him, as you promised.” Asagi continued and Harukas eyes widened a bit, as if she had a clue who we were talking about. Of course she knew.
“Oji-san… are you… talking about Majima-san?” as I said, of course she knew, she was way too clever and well… who else would I be looking for in this hell hole with Zombie-special on top than my boyfriend.
I sighed and nodded, getting out of my seat and back on the streets.
“I’ll find him myself, he should still be at the hills.”
“You sure its save to go alone?” Asagi asked and I nodded, as Haruka jumped out of the vehicle as well, taking my hand.
“I’m coming with you.” She said. I tried to protest but she pulled my hand and walked forward.
“Zombie or not, I will not let my last chance to say goodbye to him slip away!” She really got her mums hothead, but I could understand that she wanted to say goodbye, but was unsure if she really wanted to see me putting a bullet in his head. If I was even capable of doing that.
“If you insist Haruka, but stay behind me, you are unarmed.”
She nodded and we went through the city, from one save zone to the next, avoiding the quarantine zones as good as Possible to reach the Hills. I was not in the mood for too much distraction. Finding my boyfriend was more important than eliminating more Zombies. That was now the Armys job, I had my own task at hand.
It was quiet, most of the zombies already dead and defeated, either by the military or the survivors that passed through here, as we reached the hills.
Many of the now really dead zombies showed gunshot wounds, a clear sign on who marched through this horde here. I followed that trail of dead zombies, empty gunshot shells and bloody footprints to a small store.
The windows broken, the door opened and all the display cases inside were destroyed. Ripped and bloody clothes were all over the floor, it must have been a nice shop before all this. what a shame.
I raised my gun and stepped inside, carefully trying to step only on the fabric to my feet to make as little sounds as possible. Haruka followed me on the same path, staying close and mostly silent.
We stopped as we heard groaning and moaning out of one of the nearby doors and I quickly ordered Haruka to step back.
She did, getting a bit distance as I stepped towards the door.
It was locked, but the key was on the floor right by my feet. Whoever was in there, probably locked the door from the inside and let the key slide under the door to be out of reach.
I grabbed it and unlocked the door, hoping, begging, praying that it was not the man I was looking for.
I pushed the door open and heard Haruka gasp, before I even looked myself, but her reaction told me everything I needed to know.
Taking a deep breath I looked into the small room.
It was, in fact, Majima, or what was left of him, being now nothing but a zombie sitting on the floor of that small room, one of his hands cuffed to a heater and a scarf around his neck that was also tied to that same heater.
Seems in his last moments of clarity he locked and tied himself up to not be a danger for anyone.
Other than all the other Zombies out there, he didn’t looked aggressive, but I knew I should never underestimate an enemy. Mostly not when that enemy was Majima. I stepped forward and Majima lifted his head, groaning and his red eye was fixed on me, but he made no attempt to get up. No hissing, no grabbing, not even trying to move, he was just sitting there. Did he tied himself up that much that he couldn’t even move? I could clearly see he had a few fights before he locked himself up. His hair was a mess and my hands were twitching to run through it to fix it. his jacket was ripped at parts and covered in blood which dried on the snakeskin, giving it a new interesting pattern, his leatherpants were ripped at the knees, no idea how he managed to do that, but it happened. Even with his greyish skin, I could still see his tattoos shine on his chest, no matter what, in my eyes he was always beautiful. He was my boyfriend after all.
Haruka came a bit closer and Majimas gaze turned towards her. The right corner of his mouth twitched a bit, as his gaze turned back to me, as I was aiming at him with my gun, but still unable to pull the trigger yet. Without him being a thread right now, I couldn’t bring myself to shoot him.
“Knew…. you would come…” I heard a raspy, scratchy voice and froze on the spot. Did Majima speak? He was definitely one of the undead, how could he talk?”
“Nii-san?”
“Kiry…chan…” Majima pulled himself up, showing, he could stand up, but not move far. He looked at my Gun.
“Do… it…”
“What? But Nii-san, its still you. Maybe there is still hope for you, you are still conscious. We can help you.” I said, clearly showing I wouldn’t give him up so fast, but Majima shook his head.
“It… hurts… pain… just pain…”
Pain? Was it that painful to be dead? He looked at me, his eye meeting mine.
“I can feel myself…rotting away… please… kill me…”
“Nii-san…” I lowered my gun and a sob escaped me, before I shook my head.
“Not yet…”
“Why…” He groaned as Haruka came a bit closer, still staying behind me. She had tears in her eyes.
“Majima-san…” She said and he looked at her. His hand reached out for her, not in an aggressive way and she also reached out for him. I watched like a hawk over this, but this was really still my Boyfriend. My Goro, my dearest.
Haruka came a step closer towards him, still holding his hand.
“I know what Oji-san has to do…” She said, tears running down her cheeks.
“And I wanted to say goodbye…”
Majima freed his hand from hers and ran it over her head. His movement was stiff and not as smooth as it was before, but the intention was still there.
“Goodbye… haru…chan…”
Haruka looked at him, kissed her middle and index finger before softly pressing them against Majimas face, before I could react and pull her away, but he didn’t attacked her. A weird smile appeared on his face.
“We will never forget you…” She said crying and I pulled her away from him.
“Haruka… please wait outside…I don’t want you to see this…” I said and she looked at me and nodded.
One last goodbye and she left the room.
“Good… girl…”
“Yeah she is…” I sighed and looked at him. My hands were shaking and I could feel tears stinging my eyes. Could I really do it? Could I really kill my boyfriend? Yes, he was a zombie but he was still there. His soul wasn’t lost yet. Was there really no chance to heal him?
A sob escaped me as he reached for me and grabbed my gun. I didn’t let go of it, but he didn’t tried to remove it from me, just moved it up, putting it in his mouth.
His tongue licked around it and I snorted a bit, a desperate laugh in such a situation.
“You can’t take anything serious right?”
He grinned a bit, but I saw it in his eye, he was serious about this. And what kind of boyfriend would I be to let him suffer, just because I’m a fucking egoist who can’t let go.
“You…. promised…” He said and I sighed.
“Yeah I promised you this…” I let the gun sink again and he looked at me, getting impatient.
“Just one last moment NIi-san, I will free you, just…fuck…thats not easy!! You know how much I love you and now… I really thought you would make it…”
“Kiry….chan…”
“Yeah… I will do it… I promised you this… just…” I knew it was fucking dangerous and that one wrong move would end me, but I grabbed Majima by the shoulders, pulled him towards me and kissed him on the forehead. I would have loved to kiss his lips, but the risk of infection was way too high.
“I love you.” I whispered and could feel his head leaning against my chest.
“love…you…too…”
I gritted my teeth to hold back the tears. Why was he still conscious? it would have been so much easier if he wasn’t.
Taking a deep breath I got back in position, pointing the gun at his head.
“Farewell love of my life.”
Closing my eyes and taking another deep, shaky breath I pulled the trigger.
