Chapter Text

Keith liked to think that he didn’t get sick easily.

He grew up in foster care and got shuffled around from boys’ home to family to group home and just around everywhere. No matter where he went someone was sick, throwing up, or sneezing in his face and the sheets were probably less than clean. He can recall getting sick all throughout his childhood and having everything under the sun until his immune system became invincible. In fact, during flu season, he was usually the only one who came out unharmed—much to Pidge’s jealousy.

The point is:

Keith doesn’t get sick.

...

But when he does, it hits hard.

-

A dry, painful cough was ripped from his throat, making him jolt his legs and try to weakly cover it with his elbow. It felt like his lungs were trying to escape him and tried to escape via his chest. He moaned as he laid in his and Lance’s bed in their apartment and his glassy eyes became heavier from the heat that was burning his skin and his stomach churned from the regular food he ate.

He really couldn’t believe it... But...

“Oh, baby! You’re sick!” Lance exclaimed in concern when he walked into the bedroom. It didn’t take a genius to spot that Keith was as sick as a dog, if his barely lucid and flushed expression was anything to go by.

All Keith could do in response was give a weak, “Mmm...” The hum raspy and sounding mildly painful. His whole body ached, and his stomach wanted to burn into itself.

It started sometime last night. At first, it was just a dry cough and chills, but then it slowly turned to nausea, until finally the fatigue hit. It was progressive, which is why he didn’t notice how bad he was getting until Lance left for classes and his temperature spiked. He tried to push through it, but between the clamminess and feeling like a wet noodle, he just couldn’t.

Quickly, Lance walked out of the room to fetch their thermometer before coming back in record time. Knowing the procedures when someone was sick was second nature after becoming an uncle to twins at a young age. “Say ‘ahh’, baby...” He instructed gently, watching sadly as his boyfriend gave another small groan and barely parted his lips.

Carefully, he slowly stuck the white and blue plastic into Keith’s mouth and waited until it beeped.

His eyebrows shot up and he felt alarms go through him when it read ‘102.6’.

He reached over and felt Keith’s forehead that was hot to the touch. “Awe, babes... You’re really sick...” He said softly with worry all over his face. He ran a hand through Keith’s hair and earned nothing short of a whimper. Lance frowned and leaned over, “My poor baby...” He kissed his forehead. “I’ll take care of you...”

The comfort brought some peace to Keith as he felt his boyfriend’s lips against his forehead, and he gave a weak whine. The blankets felt too hot and his body felt stuffy and he just wanted to be held.

Pathetically, he said, “I f’el bad...” His voice came out woozy and disoriented, matching his sickened eyes.

Cooing, he kissed Keith’s head again and whispered, “I know, baby cakes—Lancey-Lance will make it all better.” Which earned a pitiful nod from Keith.

With that, Lance got up and walked back out of the room to get supplies.

Meanwhile, Keith shifted a bit in bed and curled around himself, his red t-shirt covered in sweat and his boxers feeling way too hot.

It’s been so long since he’s been sick that he forgot it felt so bad...

Luckily, it didn’t take long for Lance to get back, a pink basin with supplies in hand. “Once a scared shitless uncle, always a scared shitless uncle,” He joked lightly before sitting back on the bed next to the poor lump that was his boyfriend.

Keith watched with glassy eyes as Lance took out Tylenol, tissues, a few rags, two water bottles, and a small bowl of ice water that he managed not to spill. At least Lance knew what he was doing. He always had to take care of himself when he was little and sick.

He felt Lance put a hand on his back, which he took as a sign to sit up but he just let out a pained whimper.

Lance ran a hand through his hair. “I know, I know... You don’t feel good, but I need you to sit up to give you medicine, amor.” Lance’s heart was breaking at how sick Keith looked; he’s never seen Keith so miserable.

Hesitantly, Keith nodded and pushed himself up with Lance’s help, feeling his stomach do a flip.

He watched as Lance poured some Tylenol and placed it against his lips. “Drink this, it’ll make you feel better...” He tilted it up a bit.

However, Keith just whined and turned his head away. The sweet scent from the children’s Tylenol penetrated his stuffy nose and smelt nauseating.

Lance gently redirected his face towards him before tipping it into his mouth, trying to ignore the guilt at his boyfriend’s whine of protest. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry—but you really need to take this to feel better...” And watched the liquid medicine go into Keith’s mouth.

The taste was as sweet as it smelt, hence it was children's Tylenol, and it was a bit overwhelming. Keith sucked it up and swallowed it, gagging a bit and Lance quickly grabbed the basin and watched to see if Keith would throw up. Luckily, it was just gagging and no vomit... Yet.

Sighing in relief, Lance put the basin down and placed a sweet kiss on Keith’s temple, “Good boy, I’m gonna change those clothes now,” Seriously, those sweaty clothes don’t look comfortable whatsoever.

Keith nodded in acknowledgement and let Lance raise his arms to remove the skin-clad shirt. His body ached as his had to keep his arms raised but Lance removed it quickly and some relief went through Keith’s body at the shirt being removed.

Lance kissed his cheek and murmured, “There we go...” Before removing the blankets and taking his pants and underwear off.

The second they were gone, Keith suddenly felt vulnerable and whined. He felt sick and exposed and didn’t like it. He didn’t like feeling dependent.

The nervous express broke Lance’s heart and he worked quickly to grab some new boxers and his blue shirt. “I’m sorry, Keith...” He whispered apologetically. He didn’t like this either. He tugged the new clothes onto Keith and then guided him back under the covers.

The dry rag was picked up by lance who then dunked it in the ice water before ringing it out, then folding it and putting in on Keith’s head who shivered.

An itch was in his lungs again and Keith started coughing again, his throat dry and hurt from all the coughing he was doing earlier. He just wanted to be held and cuddled—he didn’t like this.

He sniffled and looked at Lance pleadingly, his eyes glassy and lidded. “La’nce...” He whimpered.

Lance ran a hand through Keith’s hair and gently asked, “What is it, babe?”

“Cuddle me...” He requested smally.

The other’s eyes widened at the directness before he laughed a bit, “Okay, sweetheart...” Then didn’t hesitate to climb into bed with him, opening his arms up. He didn’t expect Keith to be so needy when he was sick.

Instantly, Keith scooted and snuggled into him, whimpering and tucking himself under his chin, the wet rag meeting Lance’s jaw but the other tried not to react. He felt horrible but Lance’s arms now wrapped securely around him made him feel a little safer. As he nosed Lance’s Adam's apple, all he wanted to do is sink into the bed and disappeared.

A hand was placed in Keith’s hair as Lance began scratching his scalp, earning a happy whine from Keith. He kissed Keith’s head and rubbed his back with his other hand. His poor baby...

They stayed put like that for a while until Keith succumbed to his misery and fell asleep, leaving a worried Lance sighing and holding him with his lanky arms. He carefully grabbed his phone from his pocket and turned down the volume to watch a YouTube video with captions as Keith slept...

-

When he woke up, he felt his body shaking and the cold rag on his forehead become warm. He shivered before prying his eyes open and waking up to a dark room. When he looked to his side, Lance wasn’t there, and anxiety started building in his chest.

Was he being too much earlier?

Did he annoy Lance?

Did he do something wrong?

He coughed before curling into himself, gripping an extra pillow. The fever made his thoughts convoluted and he was having a hard time having a coherent thought that didn’t turn into mush. All he could really notice was feeling and right now, his chest was tightened as loneliness sank into his stomach.

A small sniffle came from him, and he didn’t realize tears were in his eyes until his shoulders started to shake. Quiet, heartbroken sobs came from his mouth at the feeling of Lance leaving him when he felt sick. He didn’t mean to be too much—he couldn’t help it. Now he was all alone, and he felt too sick to fend for himself.

He was so worked up he didn’t even realize when Lance walked in with a hum, holding some sopa de pollo. “I’m back and I have some souppp--” Then Lance’s upbeat tone instantly took a turn when he saw Keith crying his heart out, “Quiznak-- what’s wrong?” He set the soup down on the overflowing nightstand and went to Keith’s side.

Keith sobbed but jumped a bit when he heard Lance’s voice. He peeked up from the pillow and saw Lance there with a confused, concerned face and pathetically sniffled, “I thought you left...” He felt embarrassment at his own admission, but he could hardly care right now.

Lance’s heart clenched, “Oh baby, no no—I didn’t leave you...” He cupped Keith’s face and wiped away the tears with his thumbs, Keith hiccupping. “I just went to make soup...” He explained gently, guilt tugging at him for making his boyfriend cry.

The tears slowed down, as he leaned into Lance’s hands, “It’s okay... I’m sorry for freaking out,” He still felt a little upset, but that was probably because his body is fighting a war.

Kissing his head again, Lance shook his head. “Hey, it’s okay...” He gave Keith a small smile that brought comfort to the other. “How about you sit up... I made my mama’s soup recipe, it’s a Cuban special~” He grabbed the bowl and waved it around a bit.

That earned a huff of a laugh from Keith who sat up against the headrest. “Alright, thanks...” He waited for the bowl to be placed in his hands, but upon realizing how shaky they were, he soon contemplated if that was a good idea.

Luckikly, Lance also noticed this and opted to feed Keith himself. Carefully, he picked a spoon up and held a hand under it, putting it to Keith’s lips. “Open the hatch, babe,” He directed, and Keith complied.

The second the warmth hit Keith’s mouth, it brought a wave of comfort over his sick body. He relaxed his shoulders a bit as the warmth broth his hit his tongue and the chicken and noodles provided a salt taste. It reminded him a lot of the soup his dad made for him when he was little.

Getting another spoonful, Lance praised him, “Good boy...” And watched Keith blush—or at least he thinks he did. It’s hard to tell with his fever.

After he was done eating, he changed Keith’s towel and cuddled him again, whispering reassurances that he wouldn’t abandon him, until Keith fell asleep peacefully...

-

A disoriented feeling smacked Keith across the face and he felt woozy. It was then that a strong wave of nausea hit him and he untangled himself from Lance and gagged, smacking a hand over his mouth.

Lance was half-asleep but suddenly heard gagging and groaned, his eyes fluttering open. When he spotted Keith hunched over and gagging, however, he instantly felt awake. “Shit..!” He swore and quickly turned to grab the basin before shoving it under Keith’s face.

Instantly, Keith belched and threw up, all the sopa de pollo coming out in sloshes and his hair in his face.

A wince came from Lance who used his other hand to scrape the hair away from Keith’s face and hold it back, grimacing at his boyfriend expelling whatever he had earlier. “There we go, let it out...” He tried to soothe as Keith gagged and threw up more.

Tears welled up in his eyes as he heaved, snot going down his face and his throat burning. “I ha’e fis--” He slurred before puking again, sobs racking his body. He always hated throwing up.

The sobs mixed with the throwing up almost made Lance tear up as he held Keith’s hair back, the basin getting progressively heavier. “I know, I know, I’m sorry...” He murmured into his ear. He wished he could take it all away, but he was no magician, only a boyfriend with basic medical and comforting skills.

His retching turned into dry heaving as he held his face over the now filled basin, spit spilling from his mouth mixed with tears. He shuttered a cry and his stomach clenched around itself as he wept. It hurt so bad.

They stayed like that for a little bit longer before Lance testingly asked, “All done...?” Not moving the basin until Keith gave a nod. Carefully, he moved the puke-filled container onto the ground with a sigh.

Keith sniffled, feeling gross and embarrassed. He just spilled his guts out in front his boyfriend, literally. Plus, he felt acid in his throat and mouth with throw up on his chin, tears still on his cheek.

“’m sorry...” He rasped out, his throat raw and weak.

Lance cooed and shook his head, grabbing a clean rag and dunking it in the ice water before dabbing Keith’s lips and chin, the other sniffling again in return. “Shhh... It’s okay, you can’t help he...” He rubbed Keith’s eyebrows and kissed his sweaty forehead. His poor thing...

The comfort made Keith shutter and hiccup, leaning into the kiss as Lance carefully cleaned him up before handing him a water bottle. He tilted the plastic bottled up until cold water went into his acidic mouth and washed everything down his throat, leaving a gross, sweet taste behind. Ew.

He looked like the epitome of pitiful and all he could do was whimper out, “I hate this...” Tearily, looking at Lance and just wanting him to make it all go away in his delirious state.

That pleading look made Lance just want to wrap him up forever and keep him safe...

He guided Keith to lay back down before placing a clean wet rag on his forehead and trying not to show his sadness at his boyfriend’s shaking. “I know, cariño. I’m so sorry...” He ran a hand through his hair and Keith whimpered, curling towards Lance. Soothingly, he whispered, “You just try and rest, yeah? I’ll be right here, sweetheart...” He punctuated with another kiss on the head.

Keith sniffled and nodded, still shivering but Lance pulled the warm blankets over him, giving some relief. “O’ay.. Th-thanks, Lance...” He shivered out.

Lance climbed in after him and scooped him up again, not minding the hot rag against his face. He rubbed Keith’s back and tried to pour all his love into the hold.

Between throwing up and his body aching, he started drifting off again, holding tightly onto Lance and clinging to him like his life depended on it.

It didn’t take long before he was out again...

-

Later, he woke up and Lance was still holding him, playing with his hair while his eyes were fixed on his phone. Keith felt a small fond feeling tug at him at his boyfriend’s face, and he snuggled more into him.

When he became more conscious of his body, he realized that his fever went down a little. His shaking decreased and he felt less hot and nauseous. He mentally sighed in relief and groaned quietly, earning Lance’s attention.

“Are you awake, baby doll?” He asked, turning towards his boyfriend.

Keith huffed and grumbled, “That’s a stupid petname...” Even if it did make him blush a bit. It was dumb.

Lance laughed and blushed himself, “Sorry, sorry. How are you feeling?” He gently turned Keith’s face which the other pouted to as he saw his cheeks were less flushed.

After Lance let go, Keith sat up to rest on Lance’s chest better and mumbled, “Better... Not as sick. Still feel gross though,” But it’s not like there was anything to do about it but wait it out.

Lance felt a wave of relief come over him and said, “Thank God. Here I thought I was going to put ‘Here lies Mullet. Died from your everyday fever.’” He teased, pinching Keith’s side and the other whined.

“Go away...” He swatted his hand away and held his arm.

He continued poking his cheek, “Awe, but you cried when I went away earlier, Keithy~” He giggled and continued patronizing him.

That made him blush again and he mumbled, “Shut up...” Before Lance relented and just held him.

Finally, it felt like the storm was wearing down and he got through the worst of it, hopefully. Now all he had to do was bed rest even though he’d prefer working on an assignment, but he doubts Lance would let him.

Humming thoughtfully, the taller asked, “Wanna watch conspiracy theories or something?” Then waved his phone around, wiggling his eyebrows.

A small quirked onto Keith face and he nodded, “Sure, but make sure it’s mothman themed.” Before putting his face in Lance’s chest, the rag discarded somewhere on the bed.

Lance scoffed and grumbled, “Yeah yeah... the boyfriend you wish you had...” While typing into the search bar on his phone.

Keith snickered. “Glad you’re aware.” Which earned a gentle smack to the rear. He jolted and smacked Lance’s arm and the other squeaked.

Soon, a video was playing on Lance’s phone about mothman sightings and Lance turned the volume up. He placed the phone on the nightstand so they could listen without Keith straining his neck or ears.

The sound of the YouTube video combined with Lance’s heartbeat soothed his wary soul, making him curl up more and give a content sigh. He felt warm still, but in a good way.

Lance smiled at his boyfriend and rubbed his back, “There we go...” He said quietly as he tugged the blankets over both of them.

They listened to the YouTube video in peace before Keith looked up and sincerely professed, “I love you...”

Lance turned a shade of red before giving a goofy smile, “I love you more, Mullet!” Then squeezed Keith tightly, making him cough and he instantly released him. “Oops! Sorry!” He exclaimed bashfully.

The coughs went down and he shook his head, “’s fine...” Then kissed Lance’s chest, causing the taller to sigh.

They tuned into the video and for a moment, Keith felt like he was in a bubble of calm...

He smiled to himself and hugged Lance tighter.

God, he had the best boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Lance was smiling himself and breathing in Keith’s hair as he exhaled through his nose.

God he was head over heels for his boyfriend.

-

Throughout the following days, Lance took care of him and held back his hair for every time he puked, helped him walk to every trip to the bathroom, spoon fed him, and emailed every Professor Keith was stressed about for late work.

The whole time, Keith just laid down and let his boyfriend coddle him, feeling himself fall more and more in love with his boyfriend...

When his fever finally broke, the first thing they did was order take out, and Keith couldn’t stop giving him kisses of gratitude and telling him how much he loved him. Lance was more than happy at the affection and took it happily.

Sure, Keith didn’t get sick a lot.

But if he did... His boyfriend would be there to make it better.

Notes:

Hi guys!

This is my first contribution to Keithtober 2025! I'm really excited to join! I wrote my own prompt list on Tumblr that's short compared to 30 oneshots to make it managable for myself and anyone else who wants to join!

My Tumblr for anyone who wants to follow or message :)!

I've been wanting to write a sickfic for a while now and I finally managed to do it :0 poor Keith got sick for his first prompt.

I think I'm getting writer's block again, but I HOPE that isn't the case and that this particular oneshot was just harder to write! I might be writing too much and have to take a short break HEHE

Also, I just want to spread awareness to any other readers or fanfiction writers that a lot of bots are being paid to comment on people's fanfictions and write hate comments :) They're always guest accounts and you'll recognize them by their lack of pfp and by insulting the work! Don't let them get to you and don't waste your time responding to them! Their replies are copy pasted, so it isn't directed towards your work!

If anyone has any requests, please comment them!

Chapter 3: Lance's Vampire

Summary:

Dating a vampire was actually a lot more wholesome than what media made it out to be, at least in Lance’s case. Maybe Lance just got the one socially awkward and cute vampire while everyone else got freaky vampire boyfriends—but either way, he wasn’t complaining.

There were a lot of secretly endearing things about them.

or

Vampire Keith is super cute and Lance loves him so much.

Notes:

CW: minor descriptions of blood.

Notes:

Dominos-- Domino's Pizza is the world's largest pizza delivery company, founded in 1960 and known for its wide variety of pizzas, other menu items like chicken wings, and innovations in the pizza industry such as online order tracking.

Guys, I'll be honest: I had no notes to add but not adding anything felt too odd, so I hope this definition is helpful even though Dominos is in over 90 countries. Also, I didn't put much effort into proofreading this, so point out if there's any errors that would affect the story and I'll fix it!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

A lot of people would think that dating a vampire would be heavily romantic and dramatic with macho-ness everywhere. Like, like Twilight! But for gay people... And with better writing than the movie, and with adults, and with less relationship drama... and in college.

Except--

It wasn’t.

-

First off, they’re very tired.

Lance was laying down in their apartment bed while scrolling on his phone. He had his dark blue hoodie on and baggy gray sweats, too lazy to dress down into something else.

Their bedroom door opening pulled him away from his phone and he smiled as he saw his boyfriend trudging in. “Hey you,” He greeted and opened his arms.

Keith looked tired, but he was usually tired during the day. Being a vampire means your circadian rhythm was all over the place and it also meant a lot of daytime naps.

Groaning, the vampire instantly flopped into Lance’s arms, earning a ‘oof’ from the other. “I’m so tired...” He complained, his voice nearing a whine as he snuggled into Lance’s hoodie.

A huff of laughter came from Lance who gathered Keith in his arms and held him tightly. “My poor little vamp,” He cooed and Keith scoffed.

“Shut up, that nickname is offensive,” He grumbled, burying his face into Lance’s chest and taking a deep inhale. Most wouldn’t suspect vampires to be so cuddly, but they were and it was sickeningly adorable.

Placing a kiss on the top of his head, he just responded, “But it makes you blushhhh—or at least I think it does,” He tilted Keith’s chin up to expose dark purple eyes and his skin unlively, but sure enough there was a barely noticeable pink there. “Awwe, there it is!” He teased and thumbed his cheek.

He watched the vampire’s eyes widened and the tiny tint become more visible, “Lance!” He smacked his hand away and buried his face back into Lance’s chest. “You’re so dumb,” But there was no concealing the shyness in his voice.

Ruffling his hair, he just gave him a tight squeeze and kissed his head again. “You’re adorable,” He complimented with fond eyes. His heart squeeze just a bit when he saw the corner of Keith’s lips tug.

“Sure...” He replied to cooly back, his voice disappearing into the soft fabric.

Lance picked and scratched at the silky hair beneath him—vampires had such nice hair—until Keith started to lightly doze off.

Small, warm breathes were felt through his hoodie as Keith’s weight slumped onto him, his body completely relaxed. It took a lot of self-control to not get cuteness aggression and squeeze him, but Lance is a man with restraint (barely).

Eventually, Lance tugged the blanket up and fell asleep with his cute vampire on top of him.

-

Secondly, they can turn into bats and be your pocket friend.

Lance had a chemistry quiz and felt beyond anxious. He had been studying for hours, practicing with Pidge who kept telling him they were done with his overthinking, and he reviewed his study guide like ten times. Sure, he knows the material like the back of his hand, but his nerves were frying him.

Honestly, he was working himself up over nothing and he knew it. It was just hard to calm down when you have unmedicated ADHD and little to no self confidence in your academic prowess.

Luckily, Keith noticed how badly he was freaking himself out and offered a solution.

“What if I go with you to the quiz?” His voice was nonchalant, and it threw Lance completely off.

Exasperatedly, he replied, “How? It’s an exam, I can’t just bring another human.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair and tapping his feet rapidly against the hardwood ground.

With a grin, Keith simple said, “Who said I had to be a human?”

Then Lance’s mouth dropped into an ‘oh’ before turning into a wide grin.

So... That’s how Lance managed to smuggle his vampire-bat boyfriend into his hoodie pocket while taking the quiz.

The lecture room was deafeningly quiet, only the sound of people clicking their pens or bouncing their feet filling the room. Everyone was nervous and concentrated.

Everyone but Lance, who was reaching his hand into his pocket discreetly and petting the fluffy bat that was his boyfriend. He bit down a smile as he brushed his fingers against Keith’s little ear and seamlessly answered a few questions on the sheet.

Meanwhile, Keith was snuggling up to his boyfriend’s hand and even offered a playful nibble. Lance bit back a wince and tapped his head with his finger, making Keith huff.

The exam went by smoothly after that, Lance’s previous trepidation and dread now replaced with content and confidence. Who knew having a pocket full of bat would be so comforting?

Soon, the exam was over, and Lance walked out with a pip in his step and a grin across his face. The rest of his classmates seemed nervous and were all discussing the questions, but he just walked right out and peeled to an empty corridor.

A bit comically, he grabbed Keith and held him in both hands, his little bat body wrapped around fingers with only his little face sticking out. He tilted his head up at Lance and flicked an ear in question.

Leaning down, he whispered, “You’re amazing...” Before kissing his head. The little bat made tiny squeaking noises before nuzzling Lance’s hand. Lance felt his heart soar before he unceremoniously stuffed him back into his pocket.

Keith was definitely going to get cute little bat cuddles when they get home and a bat bath after this.

Having a bat boyfriend was the best.

-

Thirdly, they’re very considerate after drinking your blood.

Keith just got done feeding from Lance, two identical marks now indented on Lance’s brown skin with a bit of blood trickling out. It was a ritual they did at the end of every week to avoid Keith getting sick; Lance’s blood also tasted better than animal blood. He never took too much, just barely more than a blood draw, but Lance definitely still got lightheaded.

Letting out a shaky breath, Lance stumbled a bit, “Phew...” He breathed out, his legs trembling. “I gotta sit down,” He was inhaling like he ran an Iverson issued marathon.

Instantly, Keith looked concerned. “Shit-- okay,” Then helped guide Lance to the bed, the other flopping down instantly. The vampire frowned and rubbed his back, “Did I take too much?” He questioned worriedly.

Lance shook his head slowly, melting into the mattress. “Maybe a little bit. But I’ll be fine,” He assured. He didn’t hear Keith say anything back, so he knew Keith was not pleased with his answer. Smiling, he adds, “I’ll feel better if you order me some Dominos butter garlic knots and give me a massage~” Keith could never relax after blood drawing sessions unless he was pampering Lance a bit.

Scoffing, Keith finally spoke up, “I can’t kiss you until after you brush your teeth when you eat those,” Lance could practically hear the pout.

He turned his cheek to rest against the pillow and looked up at Keith with adoration, “You can’t keep your lips off me, Batty?” He teased, his heart still beating fast from the blood loss.

With slightly pink cheeks, he crossed his arms. “You’re annoying,” Then pulled his phone out to place the order.

“But you get me food anyway,” He quipped back.

Keith finished placing the online order and sat on the back of Lance’s legs. “Do you want this massage or not?” He was so cute.

Lance groaned at the pressure and hummed, “Mmm... Yeah I do...” He simply replied and folded his arms to rest his chin on them.

The vampire muttered, “Brat...” Before starting to knead Lance’s back, pressing the padding below his fingers into Lance’s back and starting a firm motion.

Instantly, Lance moaned and melted. “Oh yeah... that’s the stuff...” He sighed and relaxed. God, he’s pretty sure Keith had magic hands. Maybe it was the extra strength from being a vampire or something.

A bashful look spread across Keith’s face as he huffed and continued.

It didn’t take long for Lance to become undone under his boyfriend’s ministrations, his eyes starting to droop and the lightheadedness going to the back of his mind. He’d let Keith feed from him every day if it meant getting pampered like this...

Soon, Keith was done with his massage and the Dominos delivery man knocked on the door. Lance whined as Keith rudely abandoned him in favor to get (his) food.

Yawning, Lance sat up to prepare for his grub. His whole body felt loose and melty in the best way possible. Dating a vampire had serious benefits, bless him. He should start taking iron supplements to feed Keith more often as a thank you.

Luckily, it didn’t take long for Keith to grab the food and walk back inside the bedroom. He was holding the large pizza box away from him like it was poison, but he assumed he was doing that because of the smaller white box on top that smelt of garlic and butter. It didn’t take long for the room to be full of the scent of cheese, meat, and greasy vegetables.

Coughing a bit, he placed the food onto the bed like it personally offended him and jumped away. “Lance! Take your food before it kills me!” He coughed a bit more and stuck his nose into his red hoodie sleeve.

A sympathetic expression went across Lance’s face as he took the boxes. “Sorry, cariño... You ordered the pizza without garlic, right?” He asked, sniffing the garlic knot box and licking his lips.

Clearing his throat, he nodded, “Yeah, I did. Make sure you don’t cross contaminate my food,” Okay, dating a vampire when your favorite food is garlic knots makes things difficult, but every relationship has their struggles.

“Will do, babes,” Then he opened the box and dished the pizza out.

They ate on opposite sides of the bed, in favor of not killing Keith, and turned on ‘ParaNorman’ in favor of it being October. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing with the show playing softly and their eyes concentrated on the screen. The combination of food, good company, and a great massage brought a sense of peace to Lance and his appreciation for his boyfriend ten folded.

At one point, Lance brought his clean hand over and reached it over to Keith’s side. He gave him a soft smile and Keith flushed before wrapping his pinky around Lance’s pinkie. Lance’s heart swelled and they went back to watching their show, enjoying this moment in time together.

-

Sure, dating a vampire wasn’t like the movies, but Lance could argue it’s better than the movies. He didn’t want an edgy, soulless, possessive vampire to romance him. He wanted his awkward, considerate, and emotionally constipated Keith.

He was his sweet vampire.

The couple had a lot of differences, like a lot.

Lance loved talking, Keith loved listening; Lance liked cats and Keith was more into dogs; Lance preferred being the big spoon and Keith surprisingly enjoyed being the little one.

But another difference between them was Lance’s love of being festive.

“Okay! This looks great!” He exclaimed excitedly, flailing his hands as he neatly placed a wine glass with a black ombre and fake cobwebs in perfect grabbable range. They had juice in them though.

Keith crossed his arms and huffed out a laugh at Lance’s spread out. “Isn’t this excessive?” He dared taunt with a smile at his boyfriend.

The other scoffed in offensive, “Definitely not, it’s perfect, babe,” Before flopping onto their apartment sofa.

Their whole coffee table was filled to the brim with snacks; custom made ghost shaped pizzas that had plain cheese and sardines on top wafting into the air, Pillsbury sugar cookies with a pumpkin design stamp in the middle smelt nostalgic, mummy designed pigs in the blanket with a buttery taste to make your mouth water, and Fredmeyer donuts with several different Halloween designs were on a box to their right side. It was gluttonous, fall-themed, and perfect.

Call Lance a basic bitch all you want—he is happy and he wants to do something simple yet fun for Keith’s birthday month (because of course Lance celebrates a birthday all month).

Unable to conceal his own excitement, Keith sat down and cozied up to Lance’s arm, holding on tight. “I can’t believe we’re doing this two weeks early for my birthday...” He mumbled with a hidden smile.

Lance flicked through Halloween classics before settling on Frankeinweinie to start them off. He kissed the top of Keith’s head before replying, “You’re worth it babe—and besides! It’s fun!” he exclaimed, his blue eyes twinkling.

Well, Keith couldn’t protest to that.

The two of them cozied up together on the couch with a soft black blanket (to match the spirit) and ate some of their food. The atmosphere was spooky with the lights being off and only the TV illiuminating them and the table, yet it was also comforting with the warmth from their body heat and the sugary snacks filling their mouths. Honestly, Lance was regretting he didn’t think about doing this sooner, but oh well. Better late than never.

Between both of them, they managed to demolish each pizza halfway through the film and shove some cookies and pigs in a blanket down their throats. In the past, Keith was more hesitant and bashful to eat so much in front of someone, but then he watched Lance eat two party sized bags of chips in front of him early on in their relationship and felt more comfortable after that.

Soon, the first film was done, and Keith was partially laying on Lance, his head resting on Lance’s chest as Lance’s arms wrapped around his shoulders. Lazily, Lance picked up the remote and asked, “Whatddya wanna watch now?” Letting out a small burp and saying, “Excuse me,”

That made Keith snort, and he looked through the titles. “Uhm... Maybe the Mist? I think my pop liked that film...” He wasn’t allowed to watch it, but one time his pop and his buddies were over, and Keith snuck out of his room when they thought he was asleep and hid behind the corridor to watch it (he cried and Tex had to comfort him).

The other gave an interested hum, “I haven’t seen that before,” He clicked the movie, and it started. Instantly, the movies ambiance was eerie and made them huddle closer. Lance felt Keith grip him tighter and he smiled, running a hand through Keith’s locks, “Somebody scared?” He teased lightly.

Keith scoffed and through a pig in a blanket mummy at him, earning a ‘hey!’. “This traumatized me as a kid,” He retorted, eating his second donut of the night,

Quietly, Lance mumbled, “A lot of things traumatized you as a kid,” The joke caught Keith off guard, and he barked out a laugh before shoving a donut in Lance’s face.

They both settled down after that and ended up kissing lightly, tasting both savory and sweet snacks on each other's lips. Keith rested both hands on Keith’s chest and Lance had his arms on the small of Keith’s back as they exchanged kisses.

Lance hummed and Keith sighed, the motion back and forth and languorous. The other would slightly pull away from the kiss only for the other to follow back and connect their lips again. It was an ebb and flow between them that was unrushed and left their bodies heavy and tired.

Slowly, they gave each other a few final pecks before slumping into each other. That slow kissing always left their bodies heavy and clingy. Drowsiness tugged at their eyes, and they focused back on the movie that was already past the halfway mark, and they breathed out in content.

A few more snacks were eaten and they were happy they wore plaid pajamas and didn’t have to unbutton their pants because they were stuffed. Lance groaned and patted his tummy, “I’m not gonna move for weeks,” He grumbled out.

Yawning from the carb crash, Keith was already almost nodding off, “Duly noted. I’ll make sure to avoid the bathroom,” He jabbed lightly, nuzzling Lance’s neck.

Lance whined and pinched his sides, “Oh hush. You’re worse than me with your lactose intolerance,” Keith’s hips were so soft... He kept touching them.

Keith preened at the warm hands on him, “Mhm...” Was all he managed to say back as he started falling asleep, all the food and touches catching up to him until he couldn’t anymore.

The shorter’s sleepiness made Lance’s heart swell and he kissed the top of his head five times in succession. “Love you so much...” He slurred out, his own exhaustion hitting him.

Keith nodded and snuggled closer. The two fit together like those cute cat videos where they cuddle together and are in love. It didn’t take long before they both fell asleep while holding onto each other, the movie playing in the background with the light from it flickering a bit while they snored.

Maybe Lance was a bit over the top with movie nights, but do you know what? Keith loved it.

Chapter 5: Hunting for Keith's Other Boyfriend (Mothman)

Summary:

Keith shrugged and said, “Mothman’s hot,” With complete nonchalance, adjusting the camera lense again.

Lance scoffed in offense—what does a freaking cryptid have that he doesn’t? “He’s a moth... man...” He retorted lamely.

The response made Keith snicker, and he turned towards Lance, looking up through his bangs. “Somebody jealous?” He teased, the moonlight highlights those big purple eyes perfectly.

Chapter Text

Lance didn’t know what he was signing up for when he agreed to this—and now that he’s here, he’s in too deep to turn back. His boyfriend had the most convincing sad face, and he was a fool in love who decided—why not? Well, it was starting to slightly regret that decision.

It was dark, and oh so eerie, and so not what Lance planned to do with his night.

“Babe... Is this something you really want to do...?” He asked, carefully moving a naked tree branch away from his face, hoping that he didn’t sound too unenthusiastic about this.

Keith, of course, nodded with an adorable level of enthusiasm and continued trudging through the forest with camera in hand, “Yes! I thought I was going to go alone—I'm so happy you came with me,” He chirped with a pip in his step.

Oh, Lance could not say no when Keith was so genuinely excited about this.

It was a few days ago when Keith was all sad and bummed out, sitting on the couch with his legs tucked to his chest. Lance, being the great boyfriend he was, asked what’s wrong and how he could fix it. Keith sniffed and said that he wanted to go cryptid hunting like how he used to with his pops, but Pidge couldn’t join and it was a bad idea to go alone. The shear sadness and disappointment on his baby’s face were too much for his heart to bear, so he agreed.

He just... didn’t know he’d be agreeing to walking through the forest at 1am while carrying a satchel of medical supplies, having the cold October air blow in his face, branches smacking his legs, with bugs trying to eat him alive. The cherry on top? They were looking for a what he was pretty sure was Keith’s fictional cryptid crush.

The things he does for love... Well, he guesses that’s why he’s Loverboy Lance.

They continued walking for a while until they came to a stop, Lance almost bumping into Keith. “Ouch-- what?” He blabbed out only to see Keith bouncing on his feet.

“Here! Here! This is perfect!” Keith exclaimed excitedly.

Lance peeked above his boyfriend’s shoulders and saw that they were standing in front of a very eerie, terrifying huge tree. The bark was rippled with bumps and scraped bits, making it look old and worn down. The branches were almost a gray color and there were no leaves to adorn it, making Lance shiver. Finally, there was a hollowed-out area that looked like it was trying to eat whoever walked close enough would be eaten and never seen again.

Nervously, Lance gulped, “Th-that...?” He asked, watching Keith set up a camera towards the hole in the tree while chewing on some jerky.

Swallowing the slim Jim, he responded, “Yeah-- reports say that Mothman lives in these things... Maybe he’ll fly out or fly in? We just have to wait,” Honestly, it was startling to see Keith so engaged in something, but also cute.

Trying to appear less freaked out, Lance crossed his arms and nodded, “Right... sure, baby.” He looked around the woods with paranoia and stood next to Keith, setting the satchel down. His eyes barely adjusted to the darkness and his breathe hitched as he swore, he could almost see Keith’s eyes twinkling. Despite being scared out of his mind, it was worth it to see that sparkle.

Keith finished setting the camera up and gripped Lance’s arm tightly, “Lance... Lance...” He whispered.

A small smile tugged at Lance’s lips, “Yeah?” He questioned, rubbing Keith’s back.

A small happy noise came from Keith, and he buried his face in Lance’s shoulder. “Thank you... for coming... I’m having a great time,” His voice was sincere and a bit bashful. There was a type of joy that could only come from someone’s inner child and Lance loved it,

With a coo, he kissed Keith’s head, “Awwe... baby... Of course—I know you liked doing this with your pops...” He remembered late night conversations Keith would share about his father; they went camping all the time and watched conspiracy theories and apparently Keith didn’t let it go sense.

The other simply hummed and hugged him tighter.

Cryptids were Keith’s special interest. They had been since he was little and he spent hours researching, writing, and drawing them. Growing up in foster care, he was told by almost all his foster parents that cryptids weren’t real and that he was weird for liking them. It made him hide his interest and feel embarrassed about it.

Luckily, after Keith was adopted by Shiro’s family and went to college, he felt less embarrassed and eventually spent hours info-dumping to Lance about cryptids. Lance hadn’t seen Keith so excited and speak so many sentences before and it just made Lance fall even more in-love. After that day, he promised that despite all the teasing they do to each other, he wouldn’t tease Keith about this.

Occasionally, an animal would rummage through the bushes, or a breeze would crack a weak branch, making Lance jump. Keith would give him a grin but just kiss his cheek, making Lance huff.

“How are you not terrified?” He whispered, starring at the tree that he swore was staring back at him...

An embarrassed blush went across Lance’s face and he looked away. “No...” He grumbled out stubbornly. He was not jealous of something that wasn’t even real.

Keith put his hands behind his back and grinned wider, “Unconvincing,” He dare say and Lance huffed.

Waving his hands dismissive, he just responded, “Quiet, I am not jealous,” He put his hands on Keith’s hips, then drew him closer. The other’s eyes widened with a small blush and Lance raised an eyebrow, “Now you’re getting all shy?”

The red on his cheeks grew and he shrugged, “You being jealous is kind of attractive,” He replied simply, quelling Lance’s ego.

He leaned down closer, lowering his voice before flirtatiously asking, “Attractive enough for a kiss...?” While waggling his eyebrows.

An amused noise came from Keith who started leaning towards Lance’s lips, “I guess...” Then his eyes fluttered shut.

Lance cupped his cheek and slowly started to lean in, their lips slowly meeting and--

CRACK

A loud gush went past them and knocked them over. Keith fell onto his back, thankfully onto grass and Lance fell on top of him with a scream that rivals most girls getting slaughtered in horror movies.

“WHAT WAS THAT?!” he screamed and Keith scrambled to look as well.

They whipped their heads up to see what pushed them to the ground, only to hear the gust of wings flying off and branches snapping off their trees, leaving a tunnel of a clearing in the dense forest.

Their mouths fell open, and Lance was shaking and then, the taller basically jumped out of his skin when Keith squealed.

Beyond worried, he checked Keith over and sputtered out, “A-Are you hurt?! Holy shit--” Only for Keith to grab his arms and shake him back and forth.

“THAT WAS MOTHMAN!” he yelled shoving Lance off him with an ‘oof’ and then jumping in place at the broken branch clearing, squealing.

Lance winced and rubbed his flat bum. “Are you sure? What if it was a freakishly large like, eagle or something--” He got up and brushed his jeans off, following Keith’s gaze. There was no way that was actually Mothman... Right?

He looked over and saw Keith with the most excited look on his face before he sprang and hugged him, “This was the best night ever! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!” He babbled on and on while clutching Lance’s jacket.

The reaction caught him off guard, but he found himself melting. Gently, he cupped Keith’s cheek and let out a small, fond laugh, “Awe, anytime...” Then he just admired the shine in Keith’s eyes. He looked towards the moon that was now visible from the broken branches and mumbled, “If that was Mothman, that’s crazy...” While stroking Keith’s cheek.

Keith nodded and suddenly gaze Lance a lip-smacking kiss on the cheek. “You’re the best!” And Lance’s ears turned completely red and his knees went weak.

Bashfully, he touched the spot where his cheek was kissed and uselessly muttered, “Yeah, of course, cariño...” Then Keith scurried off to mess with the camera.

A small frown spread on his lips as he picked up the chipped device. “The pictures are all blurry...” He murmured.

The disappointment on his boyfriend’s face made Lance’s heart tug. He walked over and carefully took the camera out of Keith’s hands. The lens was chipped slightly and there was dirt covering it from when it got knocked over. Carefully, he thumbed the dirt off, “Geez, Mothman couldn’t have been more gentle with that?”

At least that made Keith chuckled a bit and he put his cheek on Lance’s shoulder. “I guess not...” He sighed. “I was hoping to actually get a picture tonight...” His sadness was palatable, and Lance just wouldn’t stand for that.

For a few moments, he stayed quiet in thought until a light bulb in his mind went off. “Babe, c’mere,” He directly, standing in front of the hallowed tree and opening an arm for Keith to walk to.

The other blinked in confusion but walked over, nestling against Lance. “Yeah?” He questioned, tilting his head.

A wide smile went across his face and all he said was, “Cheese!” Before pulling Keith into a kiss. Keith jumped but then settled into Lance’s lips on his own, melting at the arm around him and then heard a distinct click. Reluctantly, he pulled away from the kiss and looked at the camera in confusion before Lance presented the camera screen to them and his heart clenched.

The picture had a faded dark background with the black whispering away at the edge of their personas, leaving a dark yet majestic impression on the image. The top right of the picture had some distortion due to the crack, yet it didn’t make it look bad for whatever reason; more genuine if anything. The flash had left an exposure on the center of the frame and highlighted their skin and lips touching, adding a nostalgic and homemade feel to it. It looked beautiful but without looking professional; it was reminiscent of an album cover you'd see that looked so casual yet was painted in an intimacy only two people who loved each other could have.

His mouth fell open slightly as he held the camera. “Wow...” Was all he could say, but it was in wonder. The picture was gorgeous...

Lance placed his hand over Keith’s and softly said, “I know it’s not Mothman... but at least we have this and the memory, right?” He offered, an earnest and hopeful expression painting his eyes.

All Keith could feel in his chest was a strong well of love and he wrapped his arms around Lance tightly, his boyfriend taking the camera. “I think I like this better...” He spoke into his neck and kissed it. God, Lance always knew what to say.

The other hugged him back tightly and kissed his head. “This was kind of fun after all...” He muttered and Keith barked out a lot.

After that, the couple walked back home to cuddle and watch cryptid documentaries, Keith raving about seeing the actual Mothman the whole time (and Lance maybe writing post it notes on their window that say “Mothman-- stay away from my boyfriend). Keith ended up hanging the photo they took on his wall next to all his cryptid stuff, letting his two favorite things collide:

Cryptids and his boyfriend.

Chapter Text

Keith knew that this was dogy, maybe a little weird.

Okay, really weird...

But he was touched-starved and didn’t know how else to get touch besides this. Besides! It’s not like Lance seemed to mind anyway, so everything was alright, right?

He purred loudly as his stomach was scratched, rolling in Lance’s lap contently. The human smiled widely and continued the scritches, “Awwwe, you’re so cute, Stormy...” He cooed and scratched behind his ears, making Keith chirp.

For the past few weeks, Keith had been turning into a cat and prancing over to his neighbor's house, scratching at the door until the human let him in. Lance, being the animal lover he was, always opened the door for the kitty and named him Stormy (which grew on Keith). Of course, Lance knew Keith was a witch, he just didn’t know that Keith could also turn into a cat. It made Keith feel kind of guilty... but not enough to stop.

He purred louder and headbutted Lance’s hand, “Mreow...” he went softly, blinking slowly up at Lance.

Lance absolutely beamed and picked Keith up from his armpits. “Such a cute kitty! Yes, you are! Yes, you areeee!” He cooed, dangling Keith gently before kissing his face all over.

The affection made Keith melt and he mewed a few more times at the kisses before Lance cradled him in his arms. He blinked slowly at him and kneaded the air. He used to be embarrassed at acting more catlike in cat form, but that died with all the attention it got him.

Carefully, Lance set them both down on the couch and turned on Bridgerton. Keith cuddled up to him and relished in the nice pets he was receiving; Lance’s hand was so warm, and it made him feel so gooey and safe... Another ‘mrrp’ came from him and Lance kissed his head more.

Eventually, Lance fell asleep while petting him and Keith basked for a few more minutes before hesitantly getting up. He didn’t want to overstay his welcome, like he wasn’t already, and went out the cat door in the back of the house. His little heart ached to go back and cuddle more, but he decided against it.

With practice, he marched back to his own front door that had a cat door and turned back into a human. There was a puff of dust before he was stretching and yawning—all the cuddling made him tired. He frowned as he looked towards his door and thought of Lance; he felt bad for being dishonest, but he just really wanted to be held and telling him now would be embarrassing.

Sighing, he went to his couch and cuddled a blanket, turning on a show before nodding off, thinking about those comforting hands going through his fur.

-

The next day, Keith was looking at his lavender herbs in his front garden. His eyebrows were furrowed in concentration as he felt the energy of the plants and determined they weren’t ready to be picked yet. Maybe he could find a spell to hurry the gardening process up... He’s always been impatient but this time it was also because he had spell jar orders to complete.

Suddenly, a voice broke him out of his thoughts, “Hey Neighbour!” it chirped.

Keith blinked and turned around, seeing Lance standing there. He stood up quickly, dusting himself off, “O-oh, uhm, hi, Lance...” He greeted, cringing at how awkward he sounded.

Lance smiled and walked over, peeking at the purple plants, “These are pretty... are they for your potions, or what?” He asked, grazing his fingers gently across them.

Witches had a lot of abilities, and one of those was sensing aura. It didn’t take a professional witch to feel Lance’s friendly and calming one; he was like a peaceful beach where the waves gently touch your toes as you inhale the salty breeze and just feel yourself relax. In fact, he could sense his lavender plants preening at his energy too.

He shook out of his thoughts and focused back on the question, “Spell jars,” He corrected, “And yeah, they are... they’re not ready yet though,” He huffed. Maybe his energy was stunting his plants.

Lance nodded and took his fingers off the herb, “That sucks, man,” He looked around, standing on his tippy toes and shoving his hands in his pockets. “Hey... where’s your cat at?” He asked, making Keith tilt his head.

“Cat? I don’t have a--” Then he realized Lance meant him. “Oh-- uhm, the black cat with like, curls on his cheek?” He tried to play dumb, hoping he wasn’t sweating as much as he felt like he was.

His eyes lit up and he nodded frantically, “Yeah! Him! He’s sooo cute! I love him—Keith, we cuddle all the time. He’s my little sweetheart,” He cooed, talking with his hands in Lance-like excitement. The sight made Keith feel weak and he blushed.

He let out an ‘Ohhh’ which seemed so scripted, because he was a terrible liar. “Oh, him? No, No, I haven’t...” He patted the side of his pants, “Uhm, I’m sure he’ll stop by though?” He offered awkwardly, his cheeks still red.

Lance slumped a bit in disappointment, “Awwe. Thanks anyway,” Then, a smirk went across his face. Before Keith could question what he was smiling about, Lance added, “You seem pretty cuddly too, I wouldn’t mind holding you for a bit,” He jested.

For a moment, Keith’s brain broke before his cheeks went ablaze. His eyes bugged out before he barely got out, “Wh-what?” Stupidly and looked like he saw a pig fly. Did Lance just flirt with him?

The smile got wider and he dare tilt Keith’s chin up, “What, cat got your tongue?” He teased, raising his brows.

Keith was shaking at all the touch, and his touch starved mind couldn’t take any more of it. Abruptly, he shoved the hand away and blurted out, “I need to go take food out the oven. Bye Lance!” And scrambled to get inside to save his racing heart.

The door slammed and Lance blinked in confusion and slight disappointed. Did he come on too strong?

Lance sighed before turning on his heel and going home... Maybe his kitty would listen to his bisexual woes.

-

Later that day, Keith turned into his cat form. A part of him debated going; he didn’t know if he could handle being around Lance after his earlier comment, but a stronger, more desperate part of him longed to be held again. So, despite the mortification, he set off and padded off to Lance’s house.

He looked both ways of their quiet neighborhood, determining that no one would run him over, before walking onto Lance’s porch. Gingerly, he put his paws against the door and scratched, letting out a few ‘Mew mew mew’s to get Lance’s attention. He heard footsteps on the other side and sat with a bated breath as they got closer.

Soon, the door opened and a familiar face greeted him. “Stormy!” Lance cheered and kneeled down.

Keith’s little cat eyebrows furrowed, an odd, excited quirk he had, before he loudly went, “Mew!” And waited to be picked up.

Sure enough, Lance scooped him up and gave him a familiar kiss on the forehead, making him purr. “There’s my pretty kitty...” Then scratched his chin before shutting the door. Lance’s house was warm with clean furniture and nice art adorning the walls; it was cozier than the minimalistic style that Keith’s own home had.

They walked through the home until they walked into Lance’s bedroom, Lance plopping onto the blue sheets before setting Keith in his lap. Keith nipped Lance’s hand lovingly and curled up on him, closing his eyes and letting out a sweet kitty yawn.

The sight made Lance giddy and he scritched his head. “So adorable...” Then he sighed a bit downheartedly, making Keith blink up in concern. “Something happened today, Stormy...” He shared ominously.

That made Keith tilt his head and he gave a questioning, “Meow...?” What happened today that made Lance sad? Did he have to manifest bad luck on somebody? Maybe scratch them a bit? Throw salt into their eyes by “accident?”

However, Lance just petted him and said with a sad smile, “I was flirting with my neighbor today, but I think I made him uncomfortable... I really like him, but I’m not sure if he likes me...” He said softly.

Oh.

Oh...

His black hair stood up as Lance shared this very personal information and guilt tugged at him as well as complete surprise.

Lance liked him? Like, like-liked him? Seriously? Was he missing something? Sure, they talked a bit every day and he’s given Lance some free spell jars and Lance have given him lunch... but he didn’t think Lance would be interested.

He stays zoned out until he gets another pet on his back.

“I just don’t know what to do, Stormy... Maybe he doesn’t like me...?” He said smally, a tinge of insecurity painting his voice.

The very thought made Keith shake his head instantly, maybe breaking his cat character, but he quickly put his front paws on Lance’s chest and meowed loudly. He tried to convey through cat language that that is definitely not the case—he likes Lance very much and would love if he asked him out but he’s just as awkward, but alas, he’s just meowing.

A surprised look goes over Lance’s face before it melts into a smile. “Awwe, are you trying to cheer Lancey-Lance up?” He asked softly, scratching behind Keith’s ear and the cat melted. “You’re so sweet, Gatito...” He kissed his fuzzy head again.

The witch let out a pleased sound and headbutted him, his heart still racing over the fact that Lance likes him—like actually likes him. His big cat eyes blinked in amazement as he continued to get petted.

Lance laid down all the way and brought Keith to his chest, the cat kneading happily. “You’re such a good kitty, Stormy... Maybe I’ll tell him soon...” He mumbled as he started dozing off lightly.

Seeing Lance get tired, he continued his relaxing kneading with affection and trying to soothe Lance to sleep. Lance’s eyes fluttered shut and a content sigh fell from his lips as he started falling unconscious.

Maybe if he would stop being so awkward and nervous around Lance, he could actually do this as a human. Well, not the kneading, but the cuddling. Keith hasn’t been held as a human since... well since he was little and finding out Lance liked him was a game changer.

For a few moments, Keith starred at Lance, his eyes fond and longing. Being with Lance had a very high chance of becoming a reality.

His heart tingled and he hesitantly snuggled up with Lance over leaving, sighing in comfort. The moment felt too special to break and he didn’t want to leave just yet. He wouldn’t fall asleep; he’d just sit here and shut his eyes for a bit...

And listen to Lance’s breathing... and feeling his warmth... and feeling the atmosphere of his bedroom...

His own eyes closed and he knocked out.

-

Everything was warm... and comforting... and he felt a comforting grasp around him and smacked his lips. Hmm... this was nice.

Nothing could ruin whatever dreamless state he was in.

Until he was awoken by a loud, startled gasp.

“K-Keith?!” A familiar voice screeches out next to him.

In confusion, Keith’s eyes flutter open and he realized, oh shit.

He was still in Lance’s bed, he fell asleep, and he was next to Lance, and when he looked down, he saw legs and a shirt, and sick realization sunk in.

He transformed back into a human when he fell asleep next to Lance! Oh God!

Panicking, he scrambled up and held the blanket tightly, looking at Lance who looked equally freaked out. Unsure, he stuttered out, “I-I can explain,” His voice was shaky and all composure he was barely keeping earlier flew out the window.

Lance looked at him in disbelief before laughing out, “Yeah, you better!” But his voice lacked amusement and was full of total shock-- which he really couldn’t blame; he did just wake up with his neighbor in his bed.

“Uhmmm...” He started lamely.

Fuck. How was he going to explain that he’s been turning into a cat and walking over to Lance’s how to pretend he was just some random feline and not his creepy neighbor that wanted to cuddle because he liked Lance and was lonely?

He swallowed before fidgeting with the covers, “I uh—so... I’m Stormy... Surprise?” He did a lame wiggle of his fingers and awkward smile. Nice going, Keith.

Lance’s jaw promptly dropped, and he just starred at Keith. Honestly, that was a reasonable reaction.

The tension in the room grew and Keith felt Lance’s eyes bore into him as he cleared his throat and looked down. Hesitantly, he adds, “I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to take it this far... I kind of just wanted to be held to be honest...” The admission felt embarrassing as well as shameful, so he just looked down at the bedding and bit his lip.

There were a few more seconds of Lance’s brain trying to catch up to this before he processed Keiths' words and shook his head. “Wait wait wait—you were lonely and that’s why you turned into a cat to cuddle me?” He asked.

A blush went across Keith’s face and he hesitantly nodded.

Slowly, Lance softened and he simply replied, “All you had to do was ask...” And Keith’s his whipped up.

“Wh-what?” He asked, looking at the other with wide eyes.

A small huff of laugher came from Lance and he softly said, “Yeah... I mean, you already know because I kind of told Stormy, but I like you...” He scratched the back of his head with a blush.

Even though Lance already confessed it earlier, hearing it a second time, and directly addressed to him, didn’t help the fluttering in his stomach. His face somehow turned a darker shade of red and he mumbled, “B-but I lied to you...” He still felt really guilty.

Lance clicked his tongue and hummed, “I mean, yeah, that was kind of unnecessary and kind of deceiving,” More shame welled into Keith’s chest but Lance continued, “Buttt, it wasn’t done maliciously or anything—and I did gain something from it,” He nudged Keith a bit and grinned.

A small hopeful look filled Keith’s eyes and he said, “Huh?” While looking up through his bangs.

Lance cupped Keith’s cheek and brushed it, “I wouldn’t mind cuddling you—but maybe as a human this time,” He teased gently, looking at Keith with his own set of hopefulness.

Happiness swelled in Keith’s chest and before he could stop himself, he hugged Lance. He usually never engaged touch as a human, but he felt so overjoyed he just wanted to hug him. He was really having a hard time believing this.

Lance made an ‘oof’ sound before smiling and wrapping his arms around Keith. He ran a hand through Keith’s hair and gave a small, amused laugh, “Your hair is just as soft as when you’re a cat...” He commented softly.

The blush on his cheeks got stronger and he hid his face in Lance’s shoulder. However, a small bit of guilt still tugged at him. “I’m sorry... for being dishonest...” He really did feel bad; Lance just wanted to take care of a random cat, not have his neighbor deceive him.

Luckily, Lance just shook his head and hugged him tighter, the embrace warm and grounding, “Nah, I forgive you. Just maybe don’t do it again,” He pinched Keith’s cheeks and the other scoffed.

“Duly noted...” he smiled and inhaled Lance’s scent.

The two of them cuddled for a while after that until Lance spoke up, “Keith?” He murmured.

He blinked in question, “Yeah?” He silently preened at the fingers combing through his hair, sighing and leaning into the touch.

For a moment, Lance was quiet. Keith almost asked what’s wrong until he continued, “Do you want to like, go on a date...?” His voice was unsure, a bit nervous yet totally endearing.

Keith’s stomach did a huge summersault before he gave a bashful nod. “Yeah, uhm, that’d be great...” His heart was pounding, and he felt happier than he has in a long time.

Lance beamed and squeezed him tightly, making Keith wheeze, “Awesome!” Then slowly released Keith who caught his breathe. With a playful grin, he leans down and adds, “You’re such a silly kitty, Stormy,”

Embarrassment goes through Keith, and he bites back a laugh before exclaiming, “Shut up!” And smacking him with a pillow.

Sure, everything didn’t happen in the most conventional way, but in the end...

Keith was happy there was room in Lance’s heart for a clingy kitty like him.

Chapter Text

Lance was fucked. So. Utterly. Fucked.

Why was he fucked? Well, he’ll tell you why: because this little niche cafe he’s been going to is trying to kill him!

Well, if killing him meant sending them their most attractive barista, at least. The guy was a total knock out, despite having a mullet, and it was bad for Lance’s heart!

The barista—Keith—was around his age, more blunt than necessary but always shot Lance these playful grins that made him weak. Even though there was this awkward air around him, the way he carried himself seemed to compensate... along with those tight black jeans and pretty spider bite piercings that drove Lance insane (Lance wondered what it’d be like to kiss someone with that piercing). Seriously—does the owner have it out for Lance?

Anyway, Lance thought after months of their interactions, his heart was already at max capacity for what he could take, but oh ho-ho-ho...

He was so wrong.

-

The chilly October air hit him as he walked through the sidewalk down the familiar pavement, tucking his green jacket closer to himself. There were a lot of things he loved about October; Halloween, candy, pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider, but he never enjoyed how cold it was. He was a Cuban boy through and through and this was nothing compared to the hot and humid condition of Varadero, and this weather wasn’t doing it for him.

He shivered and opened the door to the familiar cafe, hearing a bell ring from above he’s grown accustomed to. “Jesus...” He mumbled to himself, rubbing his hands together and blowing hot air between them.

However, when he looked at the inside of the cafe, he gasped in delight.

The cafe was usually already beautiful with bookshelves, candlelight, nice wooden tables and chairs that offered a rustic feeling, and overall dark academia appearance, but he didn’t realize they also did Halloween!

Every part of the cafe from head-to-toe (or floor to ceiling) had some type of Halloween decoration. The bookshelves against the wall had cobwebs and spiders all over it, making it look realistic over cutesy. The wooden tables had pumpkins in the center and after the smell of nutmeg and cinnamon hit his nose, he could tell they had pumpkin spice scented candles as well. They dimmed the lights slightly and had a few fake skulls around the place as well as gothic decor that amplified the spooky but eloquent feeling that made the man tingle in excitement.

A wide grin spread across his face as he went to his usual table and sat down, draping his jacket across the back of his chair. He heard footsteps approach from behind the coffee stand and let out a whistle, “This place sure looks--” But then his eyes met with oh-so familiar barista, “Nice...” He trailed off, words suddenly evading him.

Keith gave a grin and put his hand on his hip, “Welcome back, Lance...” He said slyly and it put Lance in a trance. He knew that they were doing Halloween themed decor... He just didn’t know they were doing Halloween themed employees.

There, making Lance’s bisexual heart shake, was Keith dressed in the most drop-dead gorgeous outfit. Where Keith would normally be wearing his apron and black tee, was now replaced with a cute black lace top that hugged his figure, a few silver cat necklaces resting on the material. The top cascaded into a simple dress that had hip slits and highlighted those way too perfect hips. Going from his black boots to up the dress were black tights with a cobweb design that brought out the muscle but nice thickness of Keith’s thighs, and it almost made Lance gawk right then and there. Finally, on top of his head was a cute witch hate and it was really way too cute.

“I.. Uhm...” Lance stuttered out, all of a sudden feeling way more nervous than usual and he couldn’t stop staring at Keith. The other raised his eyebrow and Lance finally managed to point and weakly ask, “Is-is that mandatory...?” He didn’t know they did sexy witches here.

Keith snorted and it made Lance’s stomach flip before he responded, “Nah. My friend Romelle, does fashion design, and she had a Halloween themed thing. The cafe wanted me to dress for the holidays; she needed a person to do measurements for; it worked out in the end,” He shrugged dismissively, as if he wasn’t going to kill Lance.

It was no secret that Keith was an actual witch. Witches were pretty common in the world and Keith was one of them. However, he’d never seen Keith try and dress up as a stereotypical movie witch and it was beyond cute. Who knew that besides using his magic to spice up the coffee, he also could use it to spice up Lance’s heart?

Lance gulped and nodded, “Right... uhm... You look good, like really really good...” The complement wasn’t too crazy; he’s pretty sure they’ve been flirting for a few months anyway and if the coy look on Keith’s face told him anything, this was the reaction he wanted.

Smiling a bit wider, Keith gave a simple, “Thanks,” And leaned over a bit, asking, “So, what do you want to drink today, Lance?” His voice practically came out in a purr.

The taller suppressed an ‘eep!’ before squeaking out, “Pumpkin spice latte!” Keith looked beautiful and it was taking him out! It was no secret he had a crush on the little witch and Keith seemed to want to tease him whenever he could.

Nodding, Keith walked back behind the barista stand that was luckily still in view of Lance’s table and started brewing away. He didn’t even bother asking if he wanted it ice or hot because he knew Lance so well and that made him blush more.

While he worked, Lance stared at his outfit and hid his face in his hands. He hated this cafe. He hated it soooo much. He should sue for emotional damage.

He was so caught up in his world, he didn’t realize that Keith had already set his coffee down in front of him. “Here, I’ve got it covered today,” he said nonchalantly and Lance sputtered.

“Wh-what?! No wait—I can--” He tried to pull out his wallet, but Keith just rolled his eyes.

Sighing, he gestured to the coffee, “Just take it, Lance,” And Lance shut up.

When he looked down at the coffee cup, his heart did a flip when he realized there was a foam heart on top of the latte. The light foam complimented the light brown of the coffee, and the smell wafted into his nostrils and provided a calming Fall scent that made him soften.

He bashfully looked up at Keith and murmured, “Thanks... I’ll pay you back at some point though,” He promised before picking the cup up and taking a sip (a little sad the foam’s heart would be ruined, but oh well). His eyes widened as the warm flavors hit his tongue and he hummed, “This is really good!” But Keith’s coffees were always really good—he didn’t know if it was because Keith made it or if it’s because he used his magic to bring the flavor out but god, it was heavenly.

Keith rested a hand on his hip and quipped back, “I mean, this is my job, so hopefully,” Which made Lance scoff, and he tried to pretend his eyes didn’t linger on Keith’s hips again.

He has so much attitude, “But at least you’re pretty...” He found himself accidentally mumbling.

Keith’s eyes widened and a blush went across his face before Lance sat up straight with his own embarrassed expression.

“Shit! Sorry... I don’t want to sound creepy,” He apologized, looking down and fidgeting with his coffee. He should slap himself on the face for that one, gosh.

Luckily, Keith just jutted his lip out, a habit he did when he was flustered and replied, “It’s fine,” While looking away.

Lance shook his head, “No, no, it’s not fine—I shouldn’t be making you feel uncomfortable at your job.” Seriously, his brain wasn’t catching up with half the things he was saying.

Keith sighed and said more firmly, “Lance.” Which caught the other attention, making him look up at Keith. He continued with red cheeks, “I like when you compliment me, it’s fine. I just don’t know how to flirt very well back,” He crossed his arms and looked towards the side again.

The confession caught Lance off guard and he felt surprised as well as endeared before smiling fondly. “Awwe, I think you’re doing a pretty good job,” He cooed a bit, some confidence returning.

The cooing caught Keith off guard and he pouted, “Don’t tease me, I don’t know what I’m doing,” Honestly, Lance was surprised they were doing this flirting dance for months and Keith had the confidence to wear this outfit and be this cute today.

Lance shrugged and smiled, taking another sip of coffee. “Alright, alright, but seriously, you’re like... super attractive today, Keith,” Honestly, it was hard for him to shove the words out, but he somehow managed to without dying.

A small smile tugged up on the other’s lips, and he paid a glance to him, “Well... thanks,” He settled on saying, his outfit complimenting his purple eyes.

His bashfulness made Lance feel warm, and he fidgeted with his coffee, taking a deep breath before saying, “Y’know, I’d love to pay you back—for the coffee I mean,” He started. Keith peered at him in curiosity and he continued, “Maybe I can take you out some time...?” He offered sheepishly, hoping he didn’t look as pathetic as he sounded.

Keith’s eyes widened and he looked at Lance in surprise. For a moment, lance was worried he blew his shot and was ready to profusely apologize and say, ‘forget about it’ but then Keith smiled widely and said, “Sure,”

Lance blinked, not processing the words all the way. “Sure?” He repeated stupidly.

A small laugh came from Keith, and he shrugged, “Sure, why not? It sounds fun,” His voice was light, and the reply simple and a burst of excitement went through Lance.

He shot up in his chair with a wide grin, “Really?!” He exclaimed, watching Keith coyly walk away to go back to the barista stand and Lance followed his hips a bit.

The other looked over his shoulder for a moment and replied, “Really.” Then added, “Pick me up tomorrow after work?” With a head tilt, his cute witch hat following the motion.

Instantly, Lance nodded frantically, “O-okay! Yeah! Sure!” His heart was racing, and he couldn't stop the amount of joy attacking him at once, almost making him shake. The beautiful, super cool, and feisty barista said yes to his offer? Loverboy Lance still got it!

Keith just gave his own shy smile and started to do some side work, looking like he was trying to hide his own excitement.

Trying to contain a squeal, Lance drinks the rest of his delicious coffee quickly and gets up to the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow!” He chirped, hanging off the door and looking at Keith with puppy-ish eyes.

The whole display made Keith feel more endeared, and he nodded from across the cafe, “Sure thing, I’ll see you tomorrow, Lance,” His own eyes were soft with yearning, and it was hard for anyone to miss how his purple eyes got lighter around Lance.

Doing a little dance, Lance waved and left the cafe.

His heart was soaring, his stomach was full of spices, and the image of witchy Keith was burned into his brain.

Maybe his favorite witch barista would be the death of him... But he’d argue it wasn’t the worst way to go.

Keith definitely casted a spell on Lance’s heart.

Chapter 8: Happy Birthday, Keith!

Lance nodded confidently, “Duh! Trust me, Pidgey—The Lancey Lance knows his boyfriend,” He quipped and set up a few more things as Hunk and Shiro also continued with the decorations with a smile.

Pidge huffed and glared, “I told you not to call me that,” But Lance just stuck his tongue out.

Chapter Text

“Are we positive Keith will like this?” Pidge asked as they set up a few more balloons around the apartment.

The surprise party was Lance’s idea. Ever since Keith and Lance started dating last year, Keith had avoided talking about his birthday; last year, he didn’t even tell Lance it was his birthday and celebrated alone.

It made Lance feel sad and kind of hurt, so he asked Shiro since he adopted Keith when he was younger, but he just said that Keith didn’t like his birthday and never celebrated it even when Shiro and Adam insisted. Eventually, they stopped trying to celebrate and now Keith mostly forgot about his birthday or didn’t talk about it.

It made sense, in a really sad way. After your dad dies and your mom in the military is deployed to another country and goes MIA, birthdays probably don’t come easy. Plus, Lance couldn’t imagine foster care being the most celebratory place.

Even after he was adopted by Shiro and Adam, and his somehow mom came back from her mission, he still seemed to hate it.

Maybe he didn’t feel special enough to celebrate it?

Either way...

It didn’t sit well with Lance.

He came from a big family, and birthdays were taken seriously! There were family members he didn’t even recognize, a bunch of gifts they somehow got despite being poor, a bunch of dishes, music, some drinking as he got older. Not celebrating was ludicrous to him but then again, it’s not like Keith grew up being able to celebrate a whole lot.

So, he took it upon himself to do this for his boyfriend: make sure he was not disappointed and make him feel extra special.

Tying the balloon, he dusted his fingers off and grinned. “Alllll done!” He cheered and looked around, feeling pride swell up at all the various decorations, multiple deserts Hunk made, the presents they managed to conjure up, a few activities... It was perfect!

The oldest of the group looked around in admiration and praised, “Well done, Lance. You really do take birthdays seriously,” Shiro smiled, adjusting a few ballons.

Hunk chimed in and rubbed his cheek that had some frosting, “Yeah man, you really outdid yourself,”

All the praise was going to Lance’s head, and he looked away with a blush, “Awwe, thanks guys,” He waved them off with a smile.

However, Lance’s phone dinged and he opened it to see a text from Allura.

’We’re arriving right now!’

Lance’s eyes widened and he turned to everyone, “Scram! Everyone! Hide!” He whispers shouted and watched as everyone quickly nodded and went to hide, Pidge flicking the lights off.

The dark room went dead silent as they heard footsteps approaching the front door, sounding like Allura walking louder than necessary to alert them, before they heard the door creak open.

Footsteps made their way through the door and Lance held his breathe from behind the counter.

A familiar voice piped up, “I thought Lance was home...” Keith commented, a sound of fabric going to the ground, presumably his backpack.

Hunk and Lance looked at each other with nervous excitement, and Pidge and Shiro were behind the couch looking dead serious for whatever reason, dorks.

Allura hummed and said, “That’s odd...” She replied back, holding back a smile.

They walked further into the apartment and Lance nodded at Hunk who grabbed the party tiny party horn. Lance peeked his head out and gave Pidge the signal to turn the lights on when he got up, and he shook in excitement.

“God, it’s hard to see...” Keith grumbled as he continued walking, his terrible night-blindness working to their advantage.

All of their hearts were pounding as they heard Keith walk, the anticipation getting to everyone and their excitement reaching its peak.

Right as Keith was about to walk past the couch and towards the kitchen counter, Lance jumped from his hiding place and yelled, “SURPRISE!” And at the same time, the lights turned on.

Keith jumped in shock before everyone else emerged and jumped-up shouting, “SUPRISEEEEE!” While a little blow of heard from Hunk’s tiny paper horn that made confetti fall from the ground.

The lights illuminated the room and allowed the various decorations to be revealed. The red balloons were floating in every corner of the room, along with party streamers that said, ‘Happy Birthday, Keith!’. The counter behind the kitchen island had various goodies like cookies, lactose-free cakes and cupcakes, cheesecakes, and mango sticky rice that covered the wooden top completely. Presents adorned their living room area of a diverse range of sizes, and it was clear that everyone contributed at least one to the pile.

All the, well everything, made Keith look around with wide eyes, his mouth parted slightly. He blinked and looked at friend to friend who all eyed Keith nervously when he went back to looking around.

Lance sheepishly walked up with a party hat on, “I thought it’d be nice if we actually celebrated your birthday instead of you doing your usual birthday brooding,” The tease was light and he hesitantly placed a cheap party hat on his boyfriend’s face, who was looking at him with a mildly unreadable expression.

The silence made everyone tense, and their smiles went from wide too nervous as they looked at each other. Was it too much? Was this a bad idea?

A small, guilty expression went across Lance’s face as he hesitantly asked, “Do you, uh, not like it then...?” He placed a hand on Keith’s shoulder and startled as it started to shake.

Keith’s lips became a wobbly thin line before the rest of his face slowly started to crumble.

Lance was taken aback by the action and reached a hand out to Keith only for a raw, wholehearted sob to be ripped from his lips. The older buried his eyes in his wrist as he sobbed with trembling shoulders.

The noise startled everyone in the room and they jumped. Lance’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, and he started profusely waving his hands, “Oh no no no—I'm sorry--! I didn’t mean to make you cry on your birthday—I'm sorry--” He apologized in a soft, sincere voice.

Suddenly, Keith threw himself into Lance’s arms and cried into him, getting his shirt damp and his nails slightly digging into his shirt.

Instantly, Lance wrapped his arms around Keith and held him tightly, trying to desperately soothe him as Hunk and Shiro awkwardly hovered closer to try and gage what to do, everyone else standing there nervously.

Once again, Lance said, “I’m sor--” But was interpreted.

“I lo-lob it-ittt...!” Keith managed to get out behind a cry, his voice muffled from Lance’s shirt.

They all paused in surprise at Keith’s reply before they all softened, letting out their own high-pitched, “Awwwe...”s.

A surprised look went across Lance’s face before a smile did, and his chest clenched tightly at the pleaded confession. “Awe, babes... You’re fine...” He rubbed his back and Keith let out another strong cry.

Hunk and Shiro let out a little laugh and went to rub his back while Pidge and Allura smiled sympathetically and patted his arms.

“Awwe, you’re fine, buddy,” Pidge commented through a grin and Hunk nodded.

In agreement, Hunk added, “Yeah man, we’re here...” While rubbing a circle.

Allura chimed in and said, “That’s right, Keith! We’re all here for you!”

Shiro nodded and lowly said, “Shhh, you’re all right, Kiddo...” Before giving his little brother, a kiss on top of his head.

Lance squeezed him tighter and rocked him a bit as he got all the tears out. It was kind of overwhelming to see someone so reserved just burst like this, and he had to shake his hand out to regulate his own feelings a little bit.

Luckily, his tears slowed down after a bit, and he untucked himself from Lance. He sniffled and looked around with glassy eyes. His family all gave him some reassuring smiles before he turned back to Lance, “This is all for me?” He asked, his voice unsure with a hope that Lance hadn’t heard from him before.

He nodded and knocked on Keith’s party hat, “That’s right—it's all for you, cariño,” He gently reassured.

Keith nodded back and wiped his eyes with his palm, clearing his throat. “God, sorry... This is just, a lot,” He took a shaky inhale in and there were more small laughs from everyone else at the sweet display.

Soothingly, Lance murmured, “It’s okay, take your time, baby...” He toned down on the teasing for now and let Keith process it.

He cleared his throat once again before hesitantly walking around the room, going to the kitchen counter and peering at the sweet treats. He turned to Hunk who just gave a sweet smile.

“I made those—which I enjoyed doing! I wanted you to have a good birthday, man...” The taller smiled bashfully with a blush.

Keith nodded quietly yet gratefully and looked at the decorations, to which Pidge and Shiro raised their hands. “We did that. Wanted to party the place up a bit,” Pidge explained as they watched Keith fidget with a red balloon.

Then, his eyes landed on all the presents and his eyes widened in surprise. “Wow...” He said in disbelief. There were so many... These were all for him...?

Shiro piped up, “Had to get a few extra for all the missed ones...” He gave a firm pat on Keith’s shoulder and the younger just hugged him. Shiro’s eyes softened, and he wrapped his arms around him and swayed him.

He was trying really hard not to cry again. He bit his lip and suppressed a whimper, keeping it down and clearing his throat. Keith simply just hugged his brother tightly and everyone else just basked in the moment with Keith finally enjoying his birthday.

Lance felt happiness well up deep inside him. To actually see someone he loved so much celebrating himself... It made him really happy. He watched his boyfriend and Shiro hug with softened eyes. Keith sniffled and gave him a grateful smile which he returned fullheartedly.

Soon, the hug ended and Hunk announced, “Let’s eat because I am starving!” And everyone cheered in unison—birthday planning was hard work!

They all got to work on sharing the plentiful desserts, the tantalizing scents filling the air as they plated up. Everyone grabbed a wide range of treats, because even if you don’t normally like cupcakes, you will like Hunk’s. Hunk explained to Keith what everything was and their flavors, and Keith nodded with complete attentiveness and dished up his own birthday boy plate. He didn’t like the happy birthday singing thing, so they decided to skip it.

Once everything was dished out, they all talked and made sure to get Keith involved in the conversations and while they stuffed their faces, not letting him feel left out for a second.

Throughout eating, Lance noticed Keith getting teary eyed every few bites and try to discreetly look down to hide his face. Lance would reach out and offer his hand under the table, and Keith wordlessly took it while eating. The whole time, Lance kept glancing at Keith with eyes you could only give someone you’ve fallen way too hard for, and Keith would silently return the look.

Eventually, they all got their fill for now and they decided to get to gifts. Shiro, Lance, Allura, and Keith sat on the red couch while Hunk and Pidge sat on the ground with wide smiles. Gifts were all handed out and Keith looked like a kid on Christmas with his wide eyes and party hat on as he unwrapped each one slowly.

A Gameboy and new fit watch from Pidge that they designed themself—apparently very accurate and comfortable.

Simple easy Southern cooking recipe books from Hunk who claimed that it wouldn’t take a lot of energy or ingredients to make these dishes.

Comfortable trans tape and Hello Kitty stickers from Allura who knew he’d been wanting some new stickers and the additional trans tape was just considerate.

New dumbbells and books about space were given from Shiro who knew Keith could push himself further and the books would be a nice post work out read; he also gave him a very large tea bag collection from Adam who couldn’t make the trip over so that Keith would wind down easier.

Then came Lance’s gift.

Keith took the large red wrapped up box and gave it a shake, making Shiro snort from the childish action and Keith huffed at him. The sound was light and didn’t make much noise but it was loose in the box.

“It’s not a lot, but it felt special and I hope you like it...” Lance mentioned softly as Keith started to unwrap it with curiosity.

His eyes widened and a small gasp came from his lips as he looked inside.

Inside the large box was an equally large stuffed animal. It was quickly recognized as a purple, plush hippo that looked beyond soft and had stupid pitch-black eyes and a little smile with nostrils above it. It was the perfect size to hold at night and for Keith to put Lance’s jacket on it when he missed him.

Gingerly, he reached his hand into the box and lifted the stuffie, feeling its weight and watching its dumb face looking right back at him. His throat tightened, and his tummy did a flip as he brought it close to him and hugged it tightly, inhaling its new scent.

With hope in his voice, Lance sheepishly asked, “Do you like it...?”

Keith spent a few more moments burying his face in the stuff before giving an insistent nod.

The sight of his boyfriend holding the gift he gave him with such attachment made Lance’s heart clench.

Soon, Keith let out a shaky breath and removed himself from the hippo plushie. He looked at all his loved ones and started smally speaking, “Thank you all... for this... uhm... I haven’t really celebrated since my third foster family,” He looked a bit out of his element and looked away with pink cheeks.

Shiro gave him a side hug while Lance held his hand. Pidge, Allura, and Hunk all softened and went ‘Awwe’ again, letting out all their own ‘You’re welcome’s and ‘We love you’s.

Lance scratched the top of his head and replied, “Of course, Mullet... You’re our favorite angry ball of fire, you deserve to have your day celebrated,” He smiled gently and Keith leaned in.

He nods and hushedly says, “This is the best birthday ever...” With a tearful smile on his face.

All his friends hugged him, and they continued their party.

-

It was well into the night when the party ended; everyone tired from playing video games, talking, and stuffing their faces. It was definitely one of the most fun birthday parties they’ve celebrated, and it was easily Keith’s favorite. He still couldn’t believe they all did this for him.

Eventually, everyone left for the night, giving Keith hugs, kisses, and another ‘happy birthday!’ before leaving. Now all that remained was him and Lance in a destroyed apartment and their adrenaline rush ending. Despite the party being over, Keith’s happiness wasn’t fleeting.

The couple got dressed for bed; Lance in his nightgown and pants while Keith just wore a baggy black shirt and boxes. They giggled, probably from too much sugar, and climbed into bed. Lance wrapped his arms around Keith’s waist and pulled him between his legs, a squeak coming from Keith.

Sweetly, Lance pecked his cheek a dozen times and said, “I love you, I love you, I love you, I love youuuu!” While placing a few more sloppy kisses on his boyfriend’s face, making the other flush and laugh more.

Trying to shove him away, he protested, “Lanceee!” But was interrupted by a kiss to the lips. “Mmm...” He hummed and melted into it.

Lance kissed his lips a few times, cupping his face and keeping it slow and romantic. Keith gently held onto Lance’s wrists before Lance pressed firmly one last time and pulled away, both of them panting.

With a grin, he said, “Happy birthday, cariño,” Then nuzzled their noses together.

Keith’s eyes scrunched and he nuzzled back. “Thank you... I had a lot of fun today,” He shared. Lance was the best for doing all of this for him.

The taller sighed and flopped down, bringing Keith onto his chest. “Me too... Also, guess what?” He brushed through Keith’s hair, biting back a giddy smile.

Keith raised his eyebrow and asked, “What?” Curiously.

He squeezed Keith a bit before burying his face in his hair and murmured, “Your mom is coming tomorrow,” Then a grin started spreading across his face.

A gasp came from Keith, and he turned onto his stomach to look up at his boyfriend in disbelief, “What-- how?! I thought she was assigned for another week or two?” It was her final placement before she was coming home. For good.

Krolia was in the Army Special Forces and worked as a Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant. She was becoming a part of Keith’s life again after escaping from her mission. The trauma for them both was a lot, but they were managing in family therapy and became really close. Krolia still worked under the military but now stuck to TYD assignments where she mostly did humanitarian work before she would resign; it was a big choice for her, she’d been in the military for most of her life, but she wanted to finally be with her son and be at peace.

Lance shook his head, “Nope! She finished her assignment early! Shiro got a message from her and told her she wanted to surprise you for your birthday... but not too much so she wanted me to tell you the day before,” Keith occasionally got emotional seeing his mom after so many years, so a day or a few hours in advanced did him good.

An excited feeling came over Keith as he processed the news. “Really? This would be like, my first birthday we ever had together,” She went on her mission to another country when he was ten months old and that’s when she went missing. They were making up for lost time, and she talked about really wanting to celebrate his birthday with her; he just didn’t think it’d be this one.

Endearment went through Lance at Keith’s obvious anticipation. He found his hand and gave it a squeeze. “Really! She wanted to do something lowkey. I can head out for the day so you guys can get mother-son bonding time,” But then he saw Keith frowned and quickly added, “Or I can stay--! Whichever you prefer...” He held Keith’s hands, looking down at his boyfriend, relaxing at his weight on his chest.

Humming, Keith rubbed his thumb over Lance’s hand and bashfully requested, “Can you stay...? I want her to get to know you more...” It always felt a little awkward the first day back with his mom after her assignments; they were both quiet and didn’t know what to talk about. Lance could probably save them some awkward silence.

A bright look spread on Lance’s face, and he nodded eagerly, “Hell yeah! I’d love to! Your mom is badass!” Sure, Lance shivered whenever she scrutinized him when he kissed Keith in front of her the few times they’ve met, but she was also really cool.

Keith blushed and nodded, “She is,” He sighed and snuggled into Lance, tugging the blanket up. “I feel really spoiled...” He confessed quietly, tracing a circle on Lance’s chest.

Fondness swelled in Lance’s heart as he kissed Keith’s hair. “Good, you should. It’s your birthday,” He teased and reminded. Keith huffed and buried his face. “Don’t give me attitude,” He reached an arm over to the other side of the bed and grabbed Keith’s new hippo. “Cuddle this guy instead,” He grinned and handed it over to Keith.

Instantly, Keith let up on his grumpiness and hugged the pillow. The sight was a bit too much to Lance, and he kind of wanted to toss Keith across the room and out the window from cuteness aggression. But alas, he restrained himself.

“Awwe, baby. You’re so cute...” He squeezed Keith’s cheeks with a hand and Keith blushed.

He bit Lance’s fingers and retorted, “Shut up,” And Lance yelped.

“Ouchie!” He shook his hand off and pouted, “Meanie...” But then Keith gave him a little peck and he melted. “Awwe, fine, I forgive you...” He watched Keith hug his hippo close and tuck his head under Lance’s chin.

Quietly, Keith murmured, “You’re easy...”

Instantly, Lance made an indignant noise and wrapped his arms around Keith, shaking him and Keith let out an ‘oof’ “Excuse me?! I am not easy! You brat!” He knocked on Keith’s head and whined.

Humming, he put his face more in the purple plushie and mumbled, “Mmm... don’t-hit-me-it's-my-birthday...” Then yawned, tangling their legs together.

Scoffing, he rolled his eyes and replied, “Yeah yeah, you’re the birthday boy so I can’t be mean to you today.” He felt Keith nod and he smirked before pinching his bum.

A yelp came from Keith and he whined, “Lanceee!” And didn’t hesitate to smack Lance with the hippo.

A laugh left Lance’s lips at the soft material hitting him and he caught it before he could be stuck more. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! It was my pay back—oof!” Keith freed his hippo and smacked him again. Quickly, Lance grabbed the blanket and tucked it above Keith’s head, trapping him. “I’ve got a Keith-itto.”

A grumble came from the blanket, but Lance just grinned. Luckily, said grumpy blanket just held onto him.

Hesitantly, he flipped the blanket backwards and unveiled the cutest face. Keith was looking up at him through his fluffy bangs, and his pink lips jutted out like he did the worst thing ever to him. “Awwe, now you’re precious.” He cooed and booped his nose.

Keith smacked his hand and blushed. “Quit it. I want to sleep.” He demanded.

Snickering, Lance cuddled him close. “Alright, alright...” He yawned and stretched. “Wanna watch a show in the background? X-files?” He offered. Lance kind of hated X-files, but he always watched it with Keith on special occasions or when Keith was sad.

Keith yawned and held onto Lance tightly so he couldn’t escape. “Mhm...” Then let himself relax.

Easily, Lance grabbed the laptop and turned a random X-files episode on before carding his hand through Keith’s hair. He kissed his boyfriend’s crown which earned a peaceful sigh from the other and Lance whispered, “I love you... Happy birthday, Keith...” With a full heart.

Quietly, Keith mumbled back, “I l’ve you.. Thanks for the bir’day...” Then doed off, going limp. He knew that tonight, he’d have good dreams about his birthday and not those lonely years when he was younger, and he had his boyfriend to thank for that.

Lance squeezed him and sighed, letting the X-files start to lull him to sleep too as he promised himself: He’d make Keith feel special every year.

Chapter 9: The Maze VS Baby Keith

Summary:

Adam nodded in thanks and rubbed Keith’s back, “Thank you, Habibi,” He kissed Shiro’s cheek and Shiro blushed. They started to walk through the maze with the now tuckered out toddler and tried to find their way out.

It proved to be more difficult than expected...

“God, this place is like a maze,” Adam mumbled while taking a turn.

Shiro raised an eyebrow, “This is a ma--”

“I know what I said.”

Chapter Text

There were a lot of things Keith hadn’t seen yet while being in the Shirogane-Wright family. A rocket take off (yet), Adam’s face when Shiro cooks, Matt reciting pi while playing an accordion, and Shiro getting moody when he has to increase his testosterone but still manage to kiss Adam’s cheek before he heads out for a run.

All of these things he’d be bound to see since being adopted five months ago. With due time at least.

But there was definitely something that they could do now that it was in season that they didn’t have to wait for.

Like seasonal pumpkin patches!

Keith’s little feet hovered above the ground as he was swung by his hands.

“Weee!” Shiro cheered as he and Adam gently swung him again, making a tiny smile tug at Keith’s lips. “Weeeee!” They did it again and Keith almost giggled.

It was October, and October meant two things: Fall festivals and Keith’s birthday. So, they figured why not take their son to a Halloween themed pumpkin patch to celebrate his birthday?

The now three-year-old, dangled in the air, and the adults struggled to see his chubby cheeks from under the large pumpkin hat he was wearing.

Adam smiled and told his husband earnestly, “This pumpkin outfit was your best idea so far, Takashi.” He watched Keith turn his gaze towards the ground, looking at multiple rocks and the ground move as he was swung.

Shiro blushed and huffed, “I have plenty of good ideas,” He protested before looking back at Keith and adding, “But seriously, this is really cute,” Keith might give him cuteness aggression.

Their toddler was wearing a little pumpkin outfit with a pumpkin based that made it look like they put him inside the fruit. He had green and white pants with little green shoes that were so impossibly tiny that it almost made Shiro cry. The whole outfit really emphasized Keith’s adorableness and brought out his round cheeks, big eyes, and those cute dark fluffy locks of hair.

Soon, they stopped in front of a little coffee stand. It was wooden and had a little white window rim where the coffee order could be placed with a board of various treats and drinks that were all fall themed. A scent of cinnamon and apples wafted in the air and made them all sigh, including little Keith.

With an exaggerated grunt, Shiro lifted Keith up from under his armpits, “Up you go, buddy,” Keith blinked as he was placed on his daddy’s hip and held onto his shirt. Shiro smiled down at him and kissed his forehead, “What does our little pumpkin want to drink?” He cooed, going all mooshy.

Keith simply blinked and Adam snorted. “You’re such a dork, Takashi,” He mused with a smirk at his husband. Shiro and Keith were a little cute for Adam.

Shiro waved him off, “I wasn’t asking you, I was asking Keith.” He looked down at the wide-eyed baby and booped his nose, “Can you tell dada what you want to drink?” He gently prompted. They’ve been trying to get Keith to speak more.

However, Keith just blinked at him with his usual wobbly lips and didn’t say anything. He always had this face like he was going to cry, but they’re pretty sure that was just his face.

Letting out a little ‘Awwwe’ Shiro bounced him a bit, “Awe, you’re so pouty all the time, Kiddo... Let’s go with hot chocolate, huh? Can never go wrong with hot chocolate,” He kissed his cheek again.

Quickly, Adam added, “Lactose-free hot chocolate,” And Shiro shuttered.

“Don’t remind me...” He grumbled and walked up to the window.

A woman with dark skin, hazel eyes, and curly hair smiled, “Hi y’all. What can I get started for you?” She asked kindly, her apron having a pumpkin clip.

Shiro smiled back at her and replied, “Can we have an americano, twenty-five percent sweet and iced, and then an apple-cider... fun day?” He squinted and read the sign; it was some kind of apple flavored coffee. Interesting.

She snorted and waved her hand, “I didn’t name them, but it is really good. I highly recommend it,” She commented.

He hummed and nodded, “Then that please—and then one hot chocolate but please do oat milk,” He emphasized, raising Keith up a bit.

A gasp came from the lady when she saw the toddler and she squealed, “Oh my goodness! Look at you!” She cooed, leaning out the window with a sparkle in her eyes.

A little pouty frown was on Keith’s face, and he looked up through his little pumpkin hat. He started to stare unblinkingly at her, a weird habit he had, but Shiro just laughed nervously, and Adam rubbed his eyes with his fingers.

However, she just cooed again and spoke in a baby-voice, “Somebody isn’t very happy...!” And Keith huffed and squirmed.

Shiro placed Keith against his shoulder and patted his back, but Keith turned his head to continue looking at her. “Sorry about that—we're pretty sure that’s just his face,” he said bluntly, and Adam pretended to cough into his sleeve to hide a snort.

A laugh came from the lady, and she waved her hand as she started making their orders quickly with expertise. Honestly, with all the coffee variety and the general vibe, maybe she’s from Washington. Shiro had a cousin from there—lots of weird coffee stuff.

She quickly finished the orders in record time and started handing them out, Adam giving a quiet, ‘thank you’ as he took both his and Shiro’s while Shiro took Keith’s. “He’s so cute! How old is he?” She asked as Shiro went to pay.

Giving her his card and taking the handheld pay system and tipping, he replied, “He just turned three yesterday,” This was kind of like the birthday celebration.

She clapped her hands and exclaimed, “Happy birthday, sweetheart!” And the baby blinked at her sweetly. Quickly, she grabbed a pumpkin cake pop and handed it to him, “Can he have this?” She asked.

Shiro’s eyes widened at the gesture, and he shook his head, “No-- no—it’s fine—really--” But Keith already reached out to grab it, “Keith--” He scolded and sighed. Guilty, he asked, “Is it lactose free? We can pay for it--”

She shook her head quickly and waved them off, “I insist! He’s so cute and it’s his birthday! Also, yes, my girlfriend made them. She’s also lactose intolerant,” She shared.

They both sighed in relief and nodded. “Thank you so much,” Shiro thanked sincerely and Keith figured out how to unwrap the cake pop, smiling once he took a messy bit.

“Awwe! Much better!” A few more customers lined up, and Adam and Shiro moved out of the way. She waved at them and called out, “Bye y’all! Happy birthday, sweetheart!” And Keith even gave her a tiny wave.

The couple smiled and started walking away, “She was sweet,” Adam commented, and Shiro replied.

Taking a test sip of Keith’s coco, he replied, “She was,” lightly as they walked through the rest of the pumpkin patch.

There were petting barns, crazy food stands, gift shops, lots of pumpkin fields of course, and a corn maze. Shiro’s eyes lit up when he saw the tall standing crops, and he turned to his husband with a grin.

“Adam! We need to do a corn maze with Keith,” He insisted with a wide grin and Keith tilted his head at his dada and looked at his baba. He didn’t know what the fuss was about, but his daddy seemed excited.

The glasses having man looked past his husband and child then saw the maze entrance. He gave an affirming hum, “I don’t see why not.” It sounded fun and Shiro seemed excited.

They walked towards the corn maze, and an androgynous looking person gave them the run down: Don’t eat the corn, watch your kids, don’t cut through the path, use the bathroom beforehand, and no smoking. They happily obliged and fortunately went to the bathroom and changed Keith’s pullup beforehand, so no worries about that.

Shiro and Adam walked inside the maze, the tall corn even towering over both of them, leaving them in awe. Keith looked around wide eyed but soon he was set down.

With practice, Adam turned around and Shiro dug into the backpack to grab their toddler harness. “It’s for his own good,” Shiro always had to say before putting it on. Keith just stood with a surprising amount of compliance as his little hippo leash was put on.

A small scoff came from Adam and he said back, “If anyone is judging us, then clearly they haven’t had a runner.” Seriously, the number of times they had to chase Keith down in unideal places was way too many and since the leash, they were few and far in between and wanted to keep it that way.

Nodding in agreement, he wrapped the leash around his wrist so he could take his coffee and quipped back, “Agreed.”

Now that he was semi-free from his daddy’s grip, Keith started to toddle around the maze, Shiro following the leash happily. It was a weekday so there wasn’t really anyone else here with them (to judge them), which was nice. Keith began to eagerly explore, and his little arms flailed, making him look like a pumpkin on the loose. Adam shot dozens of photos and added them to the ‘Keith’ album.

He admired the pictures on his phone before asking, “Should we just let him go nuts?”

Taking a sip of the delicious apple cider flavored coffee, Shiro sighed and let his shoulders fall, “Definitely.” Then just let Keith run around to his heart's content.

Watching their baby happily look around the maze was beyond cute, and they felt semi-certain he wasn’t finding the exit correctly, but they could care less about that. Between turns and strides, they took a break so Shiro could give him his coco which Keith happily slurped up. They continued walking around as the day lightly started to fade to dusk.

However, Keith’s little feet tripped over a rock, and he took a tumble, a little ‘oof’ coming from him. Shiro gasped in surprise and kneeled down to him, Adam worriedly but calmly hovered.

He watched for Keith’s reaction and asked, “Keith, are you okay, bud?” Shiro gently placed his hand on Keith’s little back.

The toddler looked up at him with wobbly lips, a quiet whimper coming from him. It looked like he was also debating if something was wrong or if he was just startled. They watched with bated breathes as Keith picked himself up and wrapped his arms around Shiro, hugging him tightly.

Awwe.

Shiro carefully set their drinks on the ground and picked him up, holding his baby close. “Shhh... You’re okay... Shhh, shhh, shhh...” He soothed, whispering in Keith’s hair and cradling the back of his head. Keith squeezed Shiro tightly and let him be soothed.

A small pitying sound came from Adam who leaned over and kissed Keith’s hat. “Awwe, my poor baby,” He softened. Keith reached for him, and he carefully transferred his coffee to Shiro and took Keith. “Baba’s here, toota...” He kissed his head again.

Fortunately, Keith began to calm down after that but didn’t want to let go of Adam. “I can hold our coffees, Ads,” Shiro offered, already picking up the coffees from the ground and awkwardly holding the empty cup between his inner elbow and chest.

They continued wandering and sighed when they felt just as lost as they started. It seemed every turn took them deeper, and the corn only got darker as the daylight started to go away. Also, their legs started to hurt like hell.

Adam panted and said, “God, this feels endless. How are we not out yet?” He questioned, turning his back to see where they just come from and looking to the side to see their next pathway.

Shiro sighed and hunched over with his hands on his knees, “I have no idea.”

Honestly, they were considering calling someone for help to get out... It was getting late, they’re tired, and they also felt as though Keith’s pull up wouldn't stay dry forever.

Adam rubbed his face with his free hand and adjusted Keith, “Shit...” He swore, letting it slide in front of Keith this one time.

Just as Shiro was about to grab his phone, Keith made a little noise.

“Mmm..!” He exclaimed in a high-pitched hum.

The two adults turned to him and tilted their heads. “Huh?” Shiro questioned in confusion.

Then, Keith lifted his little arm and pointed in a direction.

The confusion barely dissipated as they came to the realization—was Keith trying to show them the way?

A little smile tugged onto Shiro’s face and he cooed, “Awwe, are you trying to help your dadas bud?” He asked softly.

Keith grunted and furrowed his brows, pointing more insistently. It was hard to not laugh at the serious expression when their baby was dressed as a pumpkin, but they reframed.

Adam blinked and commented, “I think he’s trying to show us the way,” Then looked at his husband.

A surprised feeling went through Shiro and he went ‘Huh’. Putting his hands on his hips, he shrugged, “Well, why not?” And looked back at Adam who hummed, walking in the direction Keith was pointing.

Maybe it was silly to follow a toddler’s directions... and maybe it was pride... But they definitely preferred this over calling for help.

Even though the night seemed to swallow the green leaves of the corn and the path lost its details from the dark, Keith didn’t seem to mind and was decisive with his directions. The couple didn’t hesitate to follow each pointed finger and to their shock, they felt like they were genuinely making progress. The forks in the road changed, certain leaves were curled differently, and the forced pathways they saw earlier were also different.

After five more minutes, they heard people walking and talking and realized they were close to the outside of the maze. A smile broke out on each of their faces, and they ran faster. They followed Keith’s hand until they came through a clearing that said ‘Congrats! You beat the maze!’ and cheered.

“Yes!” Shiro exclaimed and fist pumped.

Meanwhile, Adam tossed Keith into the area, the baby pumpkin squealing in surprise. “Keith! You little genius!” He praised and held him close.

The toddler giggled and held onto Adam. His cheeks showed he was a little shy at the praise, but he couldn’t help but smile at his baba.

Shiro joined in on the praise and leaned down to place several little kisses on his son’s crown. Keith squeaked and basked in the mwahs. “Good job, bud!” He pinched his cheek, and the toddler swatted his hand.

Once they settled down, they took in their surroundings and realized it was late. Not late like they were going to get the cops called for still being on the property, but late enough where the employees are probably going to stare at them to silently urge them to leave.

Sheepishly, Shiro threw away their empty drinks and said, “We should probably go,” Adam nodded in agreement.

He rubbed Keith’s back who was now getting sleepy. “Agreed.” and they started walking back to the gravel parking lot where their car awaited them.

Keith fell asleep, his tummy full of lactose free hot chocolate and body warm from his outfit and baba... Even though his daddies got lost in the silly maze, he’d make sure to always get them out. He was going to be a helper just as much as his daddies helped him...

They should definitely make this a tradition.

Chapter 10: Baby Lion

Summary:

"Awwe, son. You got yer old man's heart inna real twist, don't cha?" He picked his baby up and kissed his cheek, Keith cooing in delight and leaning into him. He patted his son's back with his large, calloused hands from long days at the fire department and working on trucks, Keith instantly sighing at the pat.

Krolia hummed and took a few more photos before looking at her phone, "Hmm... these are lovely. I'm starting to see why parents are so eager to dress their kids up for this holiday,"

Krolia and Tex put their son in the cutest little outfit

Chapter Text

Tex grinned widely as he looked down at his bed. "Well, I'll be damned," He swore with his Southern lilt. His wife's mouth tugged up, and she couldn't resist taking pictures on her phone at the sight. "Our boy is 'bout as cute as a button," He poked Keith's little tummy and the baby giggled.

It was October 23rd, their baby's first birthday and eight days before Halloween. Both celebrations were excitedly anticipated by Tex, who's loved Halloween since he was little and his Korean parents let him go out with his Texan friends for his first Halloween, and now in his adulthood where he'd celebrate his son's birth for the rest of his life.

Krolia, on the other hand, wasn't one who ever celebrated Halloween; she was from Ukraine, and they didn't celebrate there. She immigrated here when she was twenty and never got the hype-- however, now that she was a mother and her son was born so close to this Holiday... she definitely saw the appeal in dressing her baby up in cute outfits.

Keith clapped his hands and reached for his toes, looking up at his daddy who just cooed. Here he was, dressed up in a little lion onesie. It was a pale yellow with a brown mane, highlighting his chubby cheeks and impossibly large purple eyes. The second Krolia saw it at Walmart, she was overcome by this sudden urge to buy meaningless things and immediately bought it. She didn't regret anything.

I'm starting to see why parents are so eager to dress their kids up for this holiday," She commented before grazing a hand gently against Keith's cheek, the baby flailing his arms with wide eyes at the action.

Tex simply chuckled and made sure Keith was secure, "That 'n' all the free candy." His eomma wasn't too pleased about a holiday where you get candy from a bunch of random strangers when he was younger. His appa was more open-minded; he was raised in Korea and Texas, living in both back and forth for different parts of his life, so he was more accumulated to the idea but still didn't let Tex eat too much candy.

His wife furrowed her eyes and gently took Keith, who squeaked and held onto her tightly. "Maybe let's hold off on giving him candy from strangers while he's so young." Krolia was more paranoid, but he didn't mind. He loved his woman and would get on his hands and knees if she demanded it.

Easily, Tex nodded and obliged, "Yes, ma'am," Then kissed her cheek, making her smile again which gave him all sorts of fuzzy feelings. He must have looked as much of a fool as he felt because she caught his glance and started leaning in, her eyes lingering on his lips. He felt his heart jump into his chest, and he leaned in to kiss her back...

"AAP!" A tiny squeaky voice suddenly exclaimed, making them jump apart.

They looked down to Krolia's arms to see their baby furrowing his thick eyebrows with his cheeks puffed out. It seemed someone wasn't too happy about not having all the attention on him.

Laughing heartily, he ruffled Keith's hair and asked, "Is ma' lil' lion not too pleased by some kissin'?" Which seemed to be it because Keith grunted.

Krolia snorted and adjusted Keith, kissing his cheek which made him squeal. "Hmm, it seems like he wants all the kisses for himself," She tapped his cheek, and he grabbed her finger with his extra tiny ones, making her heart warm.

"Guess so." He replied back, leaning down and kissing Keith's cheek multiple times. Keith's rosy cheeks that Tex loved so much turned red, and a loud baby giggle fell from those little pink lips that filled Tex with more joy than he ever experienced before. "Awwe, I love ya so much baby boy," He cooed and kissed him a few more times.

The sweetness was too contagious, and Krolia couldn't stop herself from placing her own butterfly kisses on her baby's cheek, making him screech loudly and flail. Krolia squeezed him tightly, well as tightly as his little fragile body allowed it, before saying, "And mama loves you too..." And he peaked up at her with eyes like she hung the stars. It made a choke of emotions go into her throat that she shoved down in favor of maintaining his typical stoicism.

However, Tex caught her bitten lips and slightly scrunched eyes to will the tears away and placed a hand on her lower back. "Lot, ain't it?" He asked gently.

She startled a bit and looked at him questioningly. It was kind of crazy to her how her man could read her so easily. At first, she wanted to deny it, but that gentle smile on Tex's face melted her icy walls. She sniffled with a nod.

Keith was none the wiser and innocently smacked at her chest, then went to try and grab her rat tail that his little pudgy fingers couldn't quite reach.

He gently tugged her close with her back flesh against his chest and his hands on her waist. "I know, darlin'. I get choked up lookin' at him too. He's a lil' too perfect for 'couple of goofs like us,"

Said perfect baby peeked up at them and shoved his fist in his mouth, blinking innocently with his cheeks becoming more pronounced.

A wet laugh came from Krolia who leaned into her husband while admiring her baby. "He really is..." He took his hand out of his mouth and batted at her collarbone. "Though... maybe not perfect in the clean department," She deemed.

That made Tex snicker, and he reached a hand up to hold Keith's slobbery hand, the little one perking up at his daddy's familiarly strong hand and cooed. "S'ppose not... Guess he got them slob genes from me," Keith tried to eat at Tex's hand.

Krolia hummed with mirth. "Oh definitely." She craned her head and kissed his cheek, not missing the pink flush across his face. "I guess I like slobs though," Then watched him hide his face in her neck.

"Krolia," he huffed out, "Ya can't jus' do that to me, darlin'. Ya know how I get," Meanwhile Keith tugged his daddy's locks and blinked.

A smirk went across Krolia's face, but it was from endearment above all else. "You get shy," She stated softly.

He blew his lips like a horse, "'Xactly, you can't just do that," He defended weakly.

Despite the muscle from chopping wood and manning fire requirement, height from growing too fast and eating all his veggies, and maybe a slight rugged appearance from days where he got his hands dirty from trucks and didn't bother to wash out the oil stains, he was a teddy bear. Between all the strength and mass was a soft heart that grew twice as large whenever his wife teased and loved on him like that.

God.

And Krolia was a goner for her little family.

In a rare, gentle voice, she softly said, "I married you to do that,"

His ears turned red and he held her a little right. "Damn right ya did." and she smiled.

It seemed their sappy marriage talk was becoming a bit cumbersome to a little someone, and it wasn't long before they heard a loud protest of, "BUH-BUH-BUH! Ah BABABA!" With Keith smacking both of them with his little hands.

They both laughed in unison at the little display and Krolia raised him high, "My my! Somebody is getting vocal!" Keith was usually so quiet aside from little jealous, greedy moments like these. It was cute.

The baby produced a mighty scowl and kicked his little clothed legs, a little lion tail swaying in the air from where it attached to his onesie.

Tex took his turn with Keith and cradled him like a newborn, the little lion baby being absolutely delighted in his father's arms and curling up. "There ya go, boy... Just needed some daddy cuddles," He smiled down smittenly at the baby.

However, Krolia frowned and made her own scowl, "What about mommy cuddles?" She questioned.

Tex raised an eyebrow and looked at her, "Well I see where he's gettin' his jealousy from, Hun," Little spittin' image of his mother and Tex wouldn't have it any other way-- his wife was amazing and having a son like her was a blessing... but she was still kind of scary.

Her scowl deepened at that, and he shivered.

Anyway, Keith found his little lion tail and looked at it with wide, disbelieving eyes. He tugged it and jumped in Tex's arms when he felt it tugged him back. He shook it and furrowed his brows, trying to figure it out and not yet realizing it was attached to him.

The frustrated curiosity made Tex melt, and he went, "Awwwe..." And Krolia's grumpy expression dissipated.

"We need to buy more of these costumes..." She said in full seriousness.

Tex decided to humor her and just as serious, responded with, "I agree. At least a dozen more," He tickled Keith's squishy tummy and the baby giggled and wiggled in Tex's arms.

The giggles in the lion costume only encouraged Krolia more, and she nodded, "At least."

He was going to have a collection by Halloween.

Chapter 11: Happy Halloween!

Summary:

Sleepily, he asked, "Momma...? Are we home...?" He could barely keep his big eyes open as his cheeks rested upon her shoulder, and it made her heart warm.

She hummed and nodded, whispering against his hair that tickled his forehead. "Yes, kotyonok... We're home..." She brushed his back with her warm hand and he sighed.

"Okay..." He responded quietly and she kissed his head.

The second the door was open, everyone piled in. Lance and Matt, even Hunk, had no issue shoving past the adults which earned a clear of the throat from Krolia followed by sheepish "sorry miss..."'s.

Chapter Text

Tex and Krolia would say they had a pretty good haul. Call them crazy, but they definitely didn't believe turning it in after just a few blocks-- no no no. Trick or treating was like a muscle that had to be worked until failure (or until the kids drop from exhaustion).

It was around 10 at night, all the kids and them were finally walking home after a lot of trick or treating. Most of them, minus Lance and Shiro, were trudging along and looking pretty tired (but happy). Halfway through their walk home, Krolia had to pick up her little one because he was getting fussy and a bit overwhelmed from walking, not that she minded.

"Mr. Tex, when are we going to be homeeee?" Lance whined as he held Shiro's hand, Shiro smiling down at the younger boy. Lance was wearing an astronaut outfit, taking the helmet off a while ago and letting Shiro hold it for him, Shiro also placing Pidge, Hunk and Lance's bag of candy inside it.

The tall man gave a chuckle and ruffled Lance's hair, "Now now, boy. We're almost there, no need to get inna fuss." It was Tex's first time looking after so many kids while being out and about, but it was going well. Shiro and Matt, the oldest of the group with Shiro being fifteen and Matt being thirteen, were helping watch the younger kiddos. Lance and Hunk were five, Keith just turning six a few days ago, whereas Pidge was three and in Matt's arms already falling asleep. It was a bit of a high maintenance group, but they were great kids.

Lance huffed and crossed his arms, "We better be," He sassed back.

It seemed like Hunk was getting a bit nervous being out so late, and he held Lance's other hand. "It's getting so dark..." He said anxiously. Hunk was dressed as chef and had a plastic container with a text that said 'Bread Box' to match.

Shiro, taking pride in leading all the little guys, confidently said, "Don't worry, Hunk. All your friends and us adults will make sure nothing bad happens," And these kids took whatever Shiro said to heart.

Despite being anxious, Hunk gave a timid nod and chose to believe Shiro. Tex couldn’t be more grateful for Shiro; he was definitely going to pay him later for this. It was the least he could do to help with his Garrison tuition and take some stress off his grandma.

Matt nodded in agreement and exclaimed, "Yeah! Shiro is super buff and so is Tex... and Krolia too...” He shivered and Krolia raised a brow. “So, we're fine," He shrugged happily. Matt was dressed as an evil scientist with little Pidge dressed as his lab assistant. Both their hair was dressed widely, and they had lab coats that their dad had given them.

The two little boys nodded, feeling pleased with the trusted older boy's opinion, and they kept walking.

Soon enough, they arrived home and Tex went to fish out his keys. Keith gave a yawn and rubbed his eyes; he was dressed as Mothman and looked cute while doing it. His outfit was all black with a hood that had two big red eyes with little cross hatches for texture. The outfit had wings too and little antennas. Krolia tried not to be biased, but she definitely thought he was the cutest of them all.

Once they were all inside, Shiro helpfully closed the door and locked it. He also placed the helmet with the pounds of candy down and sighed in relief-- he was strong for his age, but dang that was heavy.

"So, what are we doing now?" He asked curiously.

Tex pointed to the table in the dining room that was adorned with PJs, including a set for Shiro, and said, "Gettin' dressed all cozy like and then we're gon’ watch movies until the kids conk out." A grin went across his face and Shiro smiled back-- Tex was like a father to him.

He gave him a thumbs up and responded, "Yessir!" before grabbing his pair and walking to the downstairs bathroom.

Meanwhile, all the kids were getting fussy, minus Pidge who was drooling on Matt's shoulder.

Laughing fondly, Tex ruffled Lance's hair and said, "Quit fussin' and go put your PJs on, son." Even though he was partially scolding them, he thought the fussing was cute. Keith didn't really whine much; he was more of a crier or breathing really fast between angry cries, so it was cute seeing how kid who weren't his own acted.

Lance pouted but grabbed his blue set of PJs, followed by Hunk who grabbed his yellow ones, then Matt grabbed his brown pair along with Pidge's green onesie. Lance and Hunk quickly ran into the bathroom once Shiro was done, now dressed in comfy black PJs and looking sleepy with his black hair all mussed up.

The other teen waited for his turn and supported his little sister with one arm in order to stretch the other. "Man... I love all these booger monsters, but I don't want to shoved on a couch with them," He complained only half guilty. He was a teenage boy-- he wanted to have some fun!

Sighing in agreement, Shiro massaged his sore arms. "Literally. Keith is like a brother to me, but I know he's gonna try and cuddle me or get my attention the whole movie and I wanna do something else," He did spend hours babysitting them with Krolia and Tex after all.

It seemed Tex predicted this would happen because he easily said, "Boys-- how 'bout you go upstairs in the spare bedroom," Which made the boys tilt their head before Tex continued, "I found the old Nintendo 64-- thought it might be fun if you guys got ta play for a long while," Then watched their faces light up.

"Really?!" Matt exclaimed. Pidge stirred and Matt bounced her and mumbled a 'sorry'.

Nodding, Tex replied, "Really really. Krolia and I 'ppreciate your work," Krolia gave a confirming nod, her own grateful smile on her face.

The two of them grinned and Shiro hugged Tex, "Thanks a ton!" And Tex laughed.

"Anytime, bud. Go have fun now," He hugged him tightly before releasing him.

Shiro and Matt didn't need to be told twice before Matt gave Tex Pidge and ran off.

Just after they ran off, Lance and Hunk came back, now dressed comfy and looking even more tired, but not too tired that they were falling asleep on their feet.

Talking in the only way he knew how, Lance whined out, "I wanna eat candyyyy-- I wanna watch moviessss," While saying on his feet, unable to stay still for very long.

Hunk looked up with happy eyes and said in his little shy voice, "Me too...!" While waiting for approval.

Waving them off, Krolia calmly said, "Go to the living room, kids. Tex will set everything up after he puts Katie down," She was the voice of authority in the household, Tex was more of the malewife. If Krolia spoke, you listened.

Maybe that's why Keith was so scary... he looked like his mom...

The two of them nodded without hesitation and carefully walked past Tex who was still holding their sleeping friend. Tex followed along with a smile, and Krolia took this moment to dress Keith in his own PJs.

Once they were inside the bathroom, Krolia tugged his costume off, the whole thing luckily being easy to take off, and carefully dressed him in his red PJs. Keith helped her sleepily and soon he was dressed in his footie pajamas. Even though he was an adventurous, albeit, mischievous child, he was also one that took a lot of naps.

He reached his hands up to be held, "Mama..." He called out with his precious sleepy voice.

Easily, she smiled and lifted him up, holding him close. "Shhhh... You're okay," She held him close. Keith was socializing all night, and that probably wore him out. "Are you doing okay, baby?" She asked with a concern in her voice reserved for her son.

Hesitantly, he nodded and snuggled into her. "Mhm... jus' sleepy..." Awwwe.

A little laugh comes from her that's so light, most people would doubt it was even Krolia's laugh. "My silly baby... Let's go have you cuddle up with your friends..." He nodded against her neck, and she kissed his forehead.

They walked out not a second later and joined the other kiddos plus other responsible guardian in the living room. It also looked like Tex brought the candy to the living room, as it was now on the coffee table in front of the couch and covering the whole thing with sugary food. Even Kosmo was already fast asleep in his little doggy bed (but tomorrow he’d surely be cuddling and licking all over Keith who was his best friend.)

Hunk and Lance were sprawled across the couch. Hunk was holding a pillow and looking freaked out by Tim Burton's I'Nightmare Before Christmas' while Lance was shoving candy in his mouth, now more awake than ever and shaking. Little Pidge was asleep in her makeshift toddler bed that Sam and Collen had packed that was a bit away from the couch while Tex rubbed her back with a smile. The light from the TV gently illuminated the room where a rustic lamp was turned on in the corner and a soft glow went across the children's faces.

Quietly, Krolia walked over and gently began to set her baby down. Of course, he whimpered but she shushed him, "Shhhh... cuddle your friends now, sweetheart." And he looked up at her with the saddest, biggest eyes before settling a bit.

His hands rested in his lap as he looked at the screen with fascination, his eyes tuning towards the movie. Fortunately, his sadness quickly was over, and Tex and Krolia smiled before taking multiple pictures of their son and his friends.

However, it seemed Keith felt a little lonely without his cuddles and looked around for company. Hunk was still shaking a bit, so he settled on him.

Without hesitation, he crawled forward and asked, "Hunk, can we cuddle?" In his sweet little voice. Keith preferred cuddling Shiro if the first choice wasn't his parents, but Hunk was a close second.

The little one looked at him in surprise before shyly saying, "Sure!" Then opened his arms. Keith didn't need to be told twice before he went forward into Hunk's arms and hugged the other little boy. Hunk adjusted his hug, and his shaking seemed to go down before he sighed.

"Awwe..." Tex whispered quietly. Now that's just too cute.

It seemed that Lance was feeling left out because he huffed and said, "I wanna cuddle... no one asked me if I wanted to cuddle..." While crossing his arms and kicking his foot.

Their son just puffed his cheeks and grumbled, "'Cause you didn't say you wanted to," Lance and Keith were always at each other's throats. It was most likely because Lance complained a lot and wanted all of Keith's attention and Keith didn't understand why he didn't just ask and got frustrated. It was pretty adorable.

"You're being mean...!" Lance exclaimed in his little voice.

"You too!" Keith protested and Hunk tensed up nervously at his friends arguing, trying to tuck Keith into his side to avoid them arguing.

With a sigh, Krolia scolded them gently, "Quiet you two." And they both instantly shut up, looking up at Krolia with guilty eyes. A motherly smile went across her face, and she spoke in a more soothing tone, "No more of that... Lance, tell Keith what you want without whining. Keith, stop escalating the situation," Hunk relieved that she deescalated everything-- he hated when they fought.

An embarrassed blush overcame the five-year-old's face, and he fidgeted with his hands before quietly mumbling, "I wanna cuddle you too... Not just Hunk..." Such an attention hungry baby.

It seemed that softened the feisty little boy up and he responded, "Okay... give me more Kit Kats and we can cuddle,"

That earned a grin from Lance. "Deal."

Lance clumsily grabs a handful of Kit Kats that he organized neatly before crawling to Keith and Hunk. He handed Keith a bunch of Kit Kats and watched the other little boy take it with a small smile. "'M sorry... for being whiney," He mumbled with red ears.

Keith chewed and swallowed the sweet wafery chocolate before sheepishly replying, "'s okay... I'm sorry for getting mad..." His temper was something he was working on with his daddy and mama.

A small shake of the head was received by Lance who squeezed him tighter, being on Keith’s left side while Hunk was on Keith’s right. "I forgive you..." He remedied before they happily hummed and held each other.

The parents snapped a dozen more photos before the kiddos went back to watching their movie, now all cuddled up with sweet treats filling their cute little tummies.

Keith seemed to relish being sandwiched between the two of them, which made sense since that's where Keith usually was with Tex and Krolia after a nightmare. The pressure made the little one's eyes droop, and a half-eaten Kit Kat was weakly clenched in his fist before his brows furrowed as he nodded off. It was impossibly cute at how concentrated he looked while falling asleep into nowhere land.

Meanwhile, Hunk was now weakly snoring; his eyes barely open until they fluttered shut. He hadn't eaten a lot of candy tonight on account of being tired, but he was bound to pick up where he left off tomorrow. His cheek rested on Keith's fluffy hair and he seemed to be the perfect pillow for their baby.

Long following in both their footsteps, Lance was pressed against Keith's side and hugging one of his arms, nuzzling his cheek against it. He was drooling slightly, which was a bit gross but also endearing in his own way. Lance was already such a diva in more ways than expected for a five-year-old boy, so they supposed this could be his lonesome icky habit. He let out a sweet sigh before holding onto Keith tighter and Keith curling towards him subconsciously.

The house was quiet aside from the movie on low volume, sweet snores, and the occasional distant voice from the two teenagers playing video games upstairs. Candy was littered all over the coffee with wrapped and unwrapped pieces of colorful plastic and some half-eaten chocolate. Though the night was long and there would surely be a bunch of sugar high kiddos tomorrow, they wouldn't want it any other way.

Humming in content, Tex whispered, "I'd call this night a real success, Hun," While resting a loving hand on Krolia's hip.

She nodded softly back and responded just as quietly, "I agree..." She leaned in for a kiss which he reciprocated. He loved his woman, and she loved her man. Their equally chapped lips met in a domestic kiss before softly pulling away, their eyes lingering to each other before she added, "You did good watching all of them." She knows she wouldn't be able to.

Love sickeningly, he leaned against her and sighed. "Couldn't a 'done it without my other half, misses," He had it so good being blessed with a wife like her.

She patted his stubble and kissed his cheek, "Good man..." She complimented.

Oh so carefully, they picked up each kiddo to bring to their large bed, tucking them in and making sure they were still cuddled up. Krolia looked at her sleeping angel and brushed his bangs back, whispering a 'goodnight, my love' before kissing his forehead. He clenched his little fist but then sighed in comfort.

Once the munchkins were taken care of, the couple said their goodnights to the teens, who were now also falling asleep. Tex gave Shiro a hug, and Shiro hugged back while Matt waved them goodnight.

The couple made it downstairs and sat on the couch, embracing each other's body heat. They had a soft blanket that was made of the softest material that all rustic country men somehow had before helping themselves to the kids' candy (just enough that the kids won't overeat any, okay?) then turned on ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’. Krolia played with her man's hair while he just felt content being her strong rugged blanket.

As the spooky night started to come to a conclusion; lights turning off and the Kogane family feeling content, they could conclude one thing:

There was no doubt about it.

This was a great Halloween.
