Chapter 1: Brothers Know Best
Chapter Text
Lulu - 13
"Luanna Halstead" the nurse calls out to the waiting room. I roll my eyes at the full legal name being used and look at my oldest brother, almost twenty years apart, and see Will already following the nurse. "Come on LuLu, let's go." I don't want to move, and instead as any thirteen year old does, folds their arms over their chest and huffs. "Not really wanting to do this Will". Will stops in his tracks and looks back at me before looking at the nurse. "We will be there in a minute." In one fell swoop Will makes his way over to my seat, squats down to my height and flips me over his shoulder. "WILLIAM TYLER STOP" Will follows the nurse who clearly is new around Med as she was quite confused by a) my brothers ID tag and casual behavior around the hospital and b) my behavior with the staff. Will is clearly stronger as he doesn't even flinch when I try squirming down from his arms. The nurse opens the door to the exam room and in the room stands Connor Rhodes leaning against the exam table looking quite amused by my behavior display. "She wasn't really wanting to move" Will tells Connor before putting me on the exam table folding his arms before looking at Connor almost asking his best friend to get into the middle of our sibling fight. "Lu's you gotta stop this okay, and Will calm down your face is starting to look like your hair you're that red with anger." I laugh at Connors comment before Will shoots me a dagger of a stare. I should probably explain why Connor Rhodes is standing here in a Chicago Med exam room in jeans, black adidas sneakers and an old oversized band tshirt his stethoscope sticking out from his back pocket and his ID tag on his front jean pocket. His outfit sorta similar to my older brothers, but Will is wearing an old northwestern med school shirt, Nike sport shorts, his hokas with his ID tag lazily stuck onto his short band. My outfit, being similar to Wills since we were on a run when it happened. A lacrosse tournament championship shirt, lululemon shorts and my own hokas is my outfit of choice but the grazed knees, elbows and scuffed up face not exactly what I was expecting to wear today.
"Were you trying to get a boy band started Connor?" Will is now the one laughing and Connor looks less amused. "No I was cleaning my apartment." I look at Will amused "you wear that to clean, not like sweatpants. Do you even own sweatpants?" Connor rolls his eyes as he logs into the computer "yes, Lulu I own sweatpants." "Are you sure cause you would've worn them to clean?" Connor rolls his eyes before swiveling the chair over to me "are you sure you actually checked your blood sugar before you went on your run." Damm. He ate with that comment.
"Yes I am sure Connor. But honestly when I got dizzy and fell it was almost like it wasn't even close to my number from like just before I started to run." Connor makes note of this on my chart. "Did you use a manual stick or just a reading on your Dexcom?" Why does he even ask that when he knows I hate needles. Yes a type one diabetic since she was 6 (when Will took me to the hospital for it for the first time), is scared of needles. "Dexcom, it was fine. I just like hit mile two and then got dizzy and tripped. Will came over and we stopped. We walked the rest of the way home and then when we got home and I still wasn't feeling well he dragged me here." Will nods "she never lost consciousness but she was pretty dizzy on the walk home and at home, hence why I brought her in. If her Dexcom is reading she's fine but she's not I'm worried." Connor nods before standing up "couldn't agree more. I'd be worried too. Alright, Lu's I'm gonna have to a manual stick and then we will go from there." I shake my head "you can read the Dexcom." Connor shakes his head as he turns around to grab a manual blood sugar testing kit as well as and a pair of gloves for him to put on. "Look at Will Lu, you won't have to see this." I look at Will who's taken my head into his hands to make me face him as Connor takes my hand and stabs the finger. I don't have to see the blood but I hear the click and feel my finger be moved to a test pad to see what my sugar will be, which turns out to be a cool little 51. "Yeah your Dexcom is broken Lulu. So I'm gonna give Will a little glucose medicine to give you and want you guys to change it out as well as have you test manually the rest of the night. Connor gives me a quick shot of something to raise my blood sugar as well as writes the script for Will. Will gently squeezes my hand before he goes downstairs to fill it while Connor agrees to clean my face, hands and knees. It stings a little on my face, but my hands and knees are more sore than expected. "I'm gonna have to clean your knees a little more than expected kiddo. It shouldn't hurt but I'm gonna have to use a butterfly bandage on your right knee to close one of the cuts." I nod my head as Connor grabs the butterfly bandages and puts two of them on my knee after cleaning them. By the time he's done Will comes back with the medicine so we can go home for the night which makes me thrilled granted I am not the biggest fan of hospitals. Connor gently rubs my hair before placing me on the ground from the table. "Just let me know if that doesn't stabilize her numbers. She should start to feel better soon, and I'll document everything so we have the incident documented." Will gives Connor a bro hug before wrapping his arm around my side and we walk back to his Jeep, which is parked in his staff spot even though he wasn't on shift. I climb into the passenger seat as Will starts the Wrangler, after he changed his Cherokee in years ago. He shifts the black Jeep into gear and we drive back home, with Will pulling up Car Play so we can call Jay. Jay answers quickly granted I had a feeling Will had messaged him about my fall earlier even though he's on a "tour" until 6:00pm tonight just a few hours from now. "Connor is gonna have her test manually this weekend and he gave me some glucose medicine to help." "That doesn't seem to bad, how are you feeling Lulu?" "I'm okay, Will is just a worry wort and so are you." My brothers laugh "yeah yeah squirt but we are just glad you're okay." Jay speaks "I just got back from one last warrant house, but we are wrapping up sooner than expected so I should be home in the next thirty minutes or so." Will nods and responds even as he merges into traffic "that would actually be helpful. I might need you to help me with Lulu." I immediately turn in my seat to look at Will "why would you need Jays help. I know I don't like manual testing but just like force me to close my eyes or some shit." Will doesn't love when I swear but he doesn't mind it granted both him and Jay swear in front of me all the time. "Luanna Kitt, it'll be fine. I will help you Will, I am just gonna throw my gear in storage now and head out. Kiddo behave." I roll my eyes turning away from Will and looking out at the fall leaves on the trees as Will turns onto our houses street just around the corner from Firehouse 51 and a few blocks away from the 21st district and the hospital, my little slice of heaven.
Our houses street is lined with trees and ours sits on the corner. It stretches up being three floors including a basement floor rather than out but we still have a two car garage and a good back yard where my lacrosse net sits. Will squeezes into his spot and closes the garage door as we enter through the side door to the first floor. The house is cozy, but also a bit of chaos. The three floors are packed, with Jays bedroom off the kitchen in what was the dining room. Will's room is down the hall from mine on the second floor, and our basement is a massive game room where my friends and I love to hang out. So yes, we have a game room but not an actual dining room. We have a kitchen table of course but usually I eat at one of barstools in the kitchen with whoever is watching me, or I eat at whatever house or apartment I'm at. My go to babysitters are: Matt & Kelly and Stella, Connor and Natalie, plus Adam and Kim. My beloved Aunt Trudy and Uncle Mouch are also go to babysitters but they are not quite understanding on the whole diabetes thing but trust me they truly do try. Hence why Matt, Kelly and Stella (the three CFD lieutenants and paramedics) are usually the first call plus they all live together in a massive apartment, so someone is usually home. I head up to my bedroom to quickly shower and change before Jay comes in home. When I moved in here, Jay and Will had some work done on the house to make sure we each had our own bathroom off our bedrooms which is quite nice especially on days like this where I honestly want to be alone for a little bit. I turn on my speaker in my bathroom and soft country music plays while I hop in choosing luke warm water while I quickly wash my hair and body. I get out after a few songs and throw my hair into two braids, not before changing into a pair of pajama shorts and a CPD shirt that Adam or Kevin definitely left here one time. I hear the garage door open which means Jay has graced us with his presence but I know it will take about 5 minutes for him to come inside the house. He has to lock his rifles in the lock box in the garage and then he puts his side arm in his bed side table before he comes and see's me which I find quite ironic. It's not like I have never seen Jay without having his weapons on him, but it's a cute sentiment he tries to put on, even if I see him every day with his gun, badge and cuffs. After three minutes, I know he's gonna be in soon so I trudge downstairs checking the time to see 4:57 pm, later then I thought but early for Jay. The door to the garage opens and Jay walks in wearing a gray henley, jeans and his combat police boots with his badge, holster and handcuffs sticking out from his belt. "Hey sleeping beauty." Jay ruffles my hair as he walks by into his room to put his gun away "Jay I never did lose consciousness." Jay laughs from the other room "I know but still seeing that text from Will was quite funny." Will walks in looking freshly showered as well which means he must've used his shower while I was in mine. He's wearing sweatpants now and a bears shirt, with his hair kinda messy but his beard freshly trimmed. "I didn't mean to make it funny but the way it happened honeslty was." I roll my eyes at him as I climb onto the kitchen counter as he and Jay grab beers from the fridge and grab me a Diet Coke. We all clink our drinks together signaling a Saturday night to our selves as siblings, something rare and fleeting these days.
We talk for a few moments just about our days before the boys leave for a moment beers back in the fridge which means they are definitely formulating a plan. Well really, Jay is now changed out of his "uniform" and into a pair of navy and green stripped pajama pants and a black army t shirt and Will has his medical duffle bag on the floor next to the couch which he must've grabbed when I was checking my phone. "Really the duffel bag ?!" Will nods "it's where I have your Dexcom supplies. Jays gonna help me remove the old one and install the new one." I roll my eyes as I flip myself over the couch "install what am I, a secuirty camera. Jesus." Jay folds his arms sassily at me "a cute security camera." I roll my eyes back as I get comfortable on the couch while Will pulls over our outman for him to sit on. Fortunately, my dexcom is on my leg. Unfortunately, my dexcom is on my leg so I have to see it. "Jay is gonna hold your hand and distract you while I take this off okay" Jay grabs my hand gently but that does nothing to calm my fears. "Will this isn't gonna help." Will looks at my leg and then Jay before mostly forcing my body to twist on its side with my upper body laying into Jays side now, with my head in his chest. "Much better." I am not sure what Will does besides ripping off the old one and cleaning the area before sitting me up. "Alright kiddo, where do you want the new sensor." "You pick I guess." I mutter still sore and looking at the small bruise forming on my leg. "How about upper arm? Easy access in case I have to turn it off tonight ?" I nod my head and he takes my arm. "Lulu your arm has got to go limp, sweetie this is not how this works." "I can't just make my arm go limp. I have to like relax and how can I relax when I'm being restrained." "Luanna Kitt, you're only being restrained because you will freak out if you see what I'm about to do so please just try and relax." Jay mutters something under his breath that I cannot hear but he changes his body position so all that is sticking out his my one arm Will needs while the rest of my body is wrapped in a protective bear hug. "So this is why you needed Jay, to use police restraint tactics on me." Will speaks while also wiping down my arm with a disinfectant wipe "yes and Jay also knows medical care so if you were to pass out or your numbers get too low while I'm doing this he can help me. Better to be over prepared then under, and now please just let your arm be limp." I try my best and I guess it works cause my new dexcom is inserted rather easily compared to what i was expecting. Will gently rubs my arm before pairing the device to my phone which would in turn share the information to his and Jays phones. Simple enough but with the issues with the eariler sensor it left no option but to follow connors request, manual stabs. "You two are torturing me, you know that right ?" Jay laughs as he smiles at me still holding onto me "Lulu I'm a detective with the Chicago police department. No where in my time have I seen this fall under the definition of torture." I roll my eyes sitting up now as Will cleans up the supplies "so new legal precedent don't you know that ?" Will laughs before sliding me an apple juice box "drink this please and then we can play monopoly or something." I roll my eyes "juice boxes and board games what am I five ?" Will stands up sliding the duffle onto the floor all of us silently acknowledging that the duffle would stay out until this latest medical emergency was done. "No, your not five but your acting like it right now. So unless you want me to take out the needle and inject you with the sugar itself I'd take the juice and drink it nice and slow." With that Will stands up and goes back to the fridge to grab his and Jays beers. "Can't I just drink that instead ?" Jay now looks at me "Luanna Kitt wanna repeat that?" I shake my head "no sir." Jay smiles giving my hair a mess up "That's what I thought squirt."
We sit around the couch for a new hours as the boys drink their beers, I drink my juice box and eventually my Diet Coke they so gratefully allowed me to have. A faint hockey game plays on the TV but really we just enjoy each other's company and play some card games. Eventually dinner time comes around 6:30 which means another manual check, something I'd been dreading. "Okay Lu who do you want Will or Me?" I shake my head at Jay who was now nursing his second and final beer of the night. "No one. I'm fine." Will who just grabbed his second beer from the fridge places it on the counter, a kitchen rag over his shoulder as he was making our dinner of chicken cesar salad and fries a classic Halstead family combo. "Luanna, not an option." With that tone I knew Will was serious. "Fine I'll do Detective Chuckles." Jay nods grabbing my pink testing case from the counter of blue wallets, cubs hats, wills second stethoscope and extra pair of handcuffs. Jay wasn't nearly as good as Will at this kinda thing when I first got diagnosed but he's improved so much and actually sometimes I prefer him to Will. Don't get me wrong, Will is my number one confident when it comes to my diabetes but Jay has never over analyzed the numbers. It's a number, fix or don't fix it. There's no trends to him, it's facts. Which is obviously the military man in him. Jay does it painless with me looking at Will still I cry a bit and wait. "She's 84. So she could definitely use dinner." Will nods. "If you don't go up after dinner kiddo I'm gonna have to give you medicine." I nod but internally I pray, hoping for not another needle. That's how I spend my dinner time waiting on the couch hoping that with each bite everything would change and I'd be okay. After dinner, I lie down stairs on the couch while Will and Jay clean the kitchen essentially putting the house to bed for the night. I'm far more tired than I'd admit probably from being so low all day. I must have closed my eyes cause the next time I open them Will is kneeling beside the couch stroking my hair in his classic eldest brother way. "Hey sweetie, gotta check your numbers one more time before bed okay." I cringe again as he stabs my finger "still low baby girl. but better. take two glucose tablets okay. no needles tonight, you've had enough." I knew the tablets were an option but not really sustaining for the night which meant Will hopped having working medicine coming into my body would balance it out again. Will gets the tablets and hands them to me ensuring I chew them before kneeling back down to me. "Let's get you upstairs and too bed." Will gently swings an arm under my legs and another around my back pulling me into his arms as he walks me upstairs. Normally I'd protest but clearly Will saw the exhaustion in my face and still small trembling in my hands from all the lows. Jay steps out into the hallway from his bedroom, now shirtless clearly looking to go to bed himself. Normally I'd say something silly about how the boys act like this is a frat house sometimes but instead I'm glad he's there. He opens the door for Will, even though Will can easily carry me and open the door so it's more symbolic than anything. Jay pulls back the covers on my queen bed and Will plops me down gracefully but I'm mostly asleep. "I'll be in to check on you throughout the night Lulu." "Sleep tight kiddo." With that my brothers leave, but don't shut the door because they know I hate that. The faint glow of my nightlight comforts me as I go to sleep, grateful for my brothers.
Chapter 2: Make it Make Sense
Summary:
Lulu gets caught red handed doing something she knows her brothers won’t approve of. But there’s clearly more to the story.
Chapter Text
Lulu - 7
I fiddle with my pencil on my math quiz none of it making sense. Third grade was hard especially with me being the youngest in my class. Everyone in my class is older than me by so much and my stupid brothers wanted me to be pushed in school. They say I'm smart, but none of this is making any sense to me. It's a multiplication and division quiz that we've been reviewing all week for but it's still so hard. Luckily I sit next to Keaton McNaulty, the smartest boy in our grade. His parents both work at Northwestern as professors so naturally he was smart, and wealthy. I go to Friendship Grove Academy because of the money we got from the accident lawsuit not because my brothers could necessarily afford it, which means I feel even more pressure to prove I belong. As the time ticks on and more and more people finish, the hair on my neck stands up. I couldn't fail the test and turning in blank answers would get me mocked at even more than my old converse and backpack from target not landsend so I look sideways at Keaton paper which wasn't covered at all. At the moment a plan formed in my head, the perfect plan actually. All I had to do was look at Keatons paper and write down his answers. I'd get a good grade, my brothers would be happy and everyone would think I was smart as our teacher Ms. Miller hangs up everyone's tests who passes as we don't get real grades until 5th grade. Friendly competition to see who passes the test the most she calls it but for me my goal to be the best. As the ten minute timer buzzes I get more brazen in the way I look at Keatons answers. 70x20 =1,400 and 180/60 =3. As I work on the next answer 80x3/6 Keatons eyes meet mine and he shakes his head angrily before thrusting his hand in the air yelling out "MISS MILLER LULU IS CHEATING OFF MY TEST!" In that moment, my whole world comes crumbling down.
Jay Halstead sits at his desk filling out a report on a warrant intelligence just executed. He was in his more combat swat style uniform, all black and had a bit of dirt on his shoulders from the flash bangs going off in the warehouse. His phone sits on his desk, next to a picture of him, Will and Lulu in Golf Shores on the coast. They were all in swim suits with Lulu hanging between the two brothers laughing. It was a candid photo that Kim got as Adam and her went with the brothers on the trip. It was one of Jays favorites even if it was taken only eight months after the accident happened. Suddenly his phone rings FGA, he looks at Adam across the way and rolls his eyes mouthing "the school". FGA on more than one occasion had called either brother about something rather minuet during the work day. Like "Luanna doesn't want to play with other kids and instead like to dig up bugs at recess." Or "Luanna came in with non organic candy today in her lunch box" even if she was super low the night before and needed it during the day. Or jays personal favorite "Luanna is refusing to read the in class reading book of the magic treehouse, she wants a not so baby book." Adam snickered knowing Jay was about to have an interesting conversation. "Detective Halstead speaking. Yes. What do you mean she cheated on a quiz?!"
I swing my legs which dangle from the chair outside the principals office. Being so small for my age means my feet still don't touch the ground which allows for a form of entertainment while I await for one of my brothers and guardians to come and get me. I hope it's Will but know since he's on shift he's probably doing something doctory to help people. Jay on the other hand unless he's actively chasing a criminal down can acess his phone more often so he's probably going to get called first. My question is soon answered as I hear combat boots in entrance of the hallway, the sound getting louder as the footsteps come closer. I don't have to look up to know it's Jay, Wills Hokas don't make that sound. It's later confirmed as I look down at black military like uniform material of someone's legs in front of me. A big difference to Will's maroon scrub pants. A gentle yet firm hand guides my head up from the floor to force me to make eye contact with the hand. "Luanna what happened?" I shake my head which doesn't give me any brownie points with Jay. "Luanna Kitt I'm not asking again you have to tell me." Before I can speak again, the receptionist opens the door to the office. She looks a little apprehensive with Jay standing there in his black uniform, badge clipped on his pants, his two leg holsters empty but scary enough. "Detective Halstead thank you for coming. Dr. Willows will see you now, Luanna you may come in as well." I nod my head and follow Jay into the office, not grabbing his hand something I would've done a year ago. Dr. Willows office is something out of Gilmore Girls something Stella lets me watch if she's baby sitting me and Kelly and Matt are out. It's an older office reminiscent of the old school and very regal like Samantha my favorite American Girl doll who I have. Dr. Willows is a nice older lady, but still she scares me especially when she has come talked to my class about behavior or that time George let the class frog, Lord Leap out in the library. "Thank you for coming during the workday Detective, I'm sorry to say but Luanna was caught cheating on her math quiz. Ms. Miller was notified by a student who saw Luanna looking at their exam directly coping their answers. Luanna will be marked as not passed, placed on academic probation which includes two weeks mandatory in school tutoring during recess and two full days of out of school suspension which means she won't be able to come back to school until Monday, as it's only noon here on Wednesday." I gulp as Ms. Willows finishes speaking but luckily and to my surprise Jay seems upset by her answer. "I'm all for the academic probation and tutoring but in school suspension seems like an agressive tactic when Luanna doesn't have anything on her record and has passing marks in all her classes till now." Dr. Willow responds in a sort of dry tone "yes that is all true but rules are rules and we don't make exceptions." I frown at her remark. I knew Holland Baker cheated in science last month but her parents are alumni who donate and she just got a single no pass. I kept that too myself though as Jay huffs which means he accepts the news. "I understand. I'm assuming you need me to fill out the paperwork for the discipline report." Dr. Willows nods and slides a red form across the desk and a big pen is passed along with it thus marking the words as true. I'm officially suspended.
We walk out to Jays truck in absolute silence. He opens up the passenger door and as usual picks me up and helps me into my car seat. He clips me in even though I always beg that I could do it myself, he doesn't talk so I know I shouldn't say anything. He gets into the drivers seat and shuts and swivels the police laptop away from me so it's facing the passenger seat. He starts the truck with a heavy roar and we start the drive back to wherever he was gonna drop me off. To my surprise it's the route from school back to the district, but I know he wouldn't give me to Will on a shift day and if I'm in trouble no way he's letting me go hang out with 51, who are the fun "guardians" in my life. As we reach a red light Jay speaks up. "I'm angry you cheated Luanna, but also want to know why you did it. You are a smart young girl who always asks for help when you need it why didn't you say you needed help in math." I don't say anything in response which Jay just huffs at as he continues to drive once the light goes green. He pulls into the back of the station and into the intelligence garage, still speechless since he spoke to me. He parks the car and goes to open my door, instead of picking me up out of the car instantly he pauses. "You still aren't gonna say anything?" I shake my head and wait while Jay unclips me shaking his head in the process. He gently yet firmly places me on the ground slinging my pink backpack with my Vera Bradley lunchbox (a Christmas gift I begged for last year) onto his back. Usually seeing him with my pink backpack and girly patterned lunch box would make me giggle but I knew this was not the time. Jay punches in the code and I scamper inside and await by the locked gate to the bullpen of intelligence. He punches in the code again and I head upstairs to his desk, seeing Adam shaking his head at me with a glint of disappointment and curiosity on his face. Kim smiles sadly at me but quickly places a kiss on my braided head before going to get more coffee. Jay puts my bag down next to his desk and pulls out my planner. "You are going to right out your assignments for the next two days onto this paper. Then you are going to get started on your homework. We are going to be checking them after each is complete. Don't think about using your chromebook if you're not allowed for the assignment. If you need to go to the bathroom ask me first. At one thirty we will have lunch together and talk again. Is that understood young lady?" I nod my head but don't speak "I said is that understood young lady?" I finally speak but it comes out more a squeak "yes sir." With that I get started on my school work knowing better than to say anything.
Around one fifteen the angry red hot tears begin to flow as I try to understand the next page of math work I had to do. This quiz was just the start of a bigger unit leading to a test in a few weeks. I start to sniffle as the numbers start to blend together and get too hard to understand. Jay seems to notice me once again at the sound of the sniffles, and his earlier anger seems to be gone or at least put aside for now. "Lulu what's up." I look at him, kinda greatful he has changed out of the scary black uniform. "I don't get this." Jay looks over my shoulder, seeing its math and he seems to get it in that minute almost instantly. "Come on kiddo let's go to the break room." I pass my Uncle Hank's office grateful he was out at a dentist appointment or something as he wouldn't stand for cheating on a quiz or misbehaving at school. Him, my Uncle Wallace and my Aunt Trudy are the most disciplinary people in my life, Jay and Will sometimes do it but usually they refer to the older men and woman in my life. We enter the break room and Jay opens the fridge pulling out an older kids water bottle of mine that looks like a sippy cup. "Drink this and take a deep breathe then we will talk." I nod my head and take a nice long sip of the cold and fresh water before looking a Jay who is sitting next to me. Like before my feet swing, back and forth, back and forth. He gently places a hand on my lap to get me to stop "Luanna I'm not asking again. Calm down and we need to talk." I look up at my older brother with a sad smile trying to find the words. "I just don't get it." Jay looks at me confused which makes me frustrated. He's Jay Bennet Halstead, he's supposed to know everything just like Will is supposed to also. They are my big brothers can't they see I just don't get it. I huff and cross my arms frowning with anger. Jay seems to get more mad at my attitude as he forces me arms uncrossed and makes sure my eyes are making eye contact with his big blue ones. "Cut that attitude Luanna Kitt. I'm only trying to help you can't get mad at me for that." I look at Jay again trying to find the words "I don't have the words for it." Jay looks at me with a thinking face. "Kiddo, none of this is helping me. I don't speak kid." I don't speak kid ?! Jay what is that supposed to mean. "Ugh. I just don't get it." Jay huffs now too "don't get what. math. that doesn't make sense. you have to speak like an adult for me." I begin to cry with that comment "I'm not an adult Jay can't you see that." Jay must have regretted those words cause he sighs and stands up. "Will is gonna just have to talk to you later when he gets home. Eat lunch, I'll check your numbers on the app. We will leave at 3." With that we are silent the rest of the afternoon even during the ride home.
It's quite in the house especially with me being forced to play quietly in my room with a lower number approved snack of goldfish and a kids water bottle full of water. Even though playing with my American Girls dolls is normally the highlight of a school night my imagination isn't even working. My brain is not working at all, ugh. I can faintly hear Jay talking on the phone probably talking to Will which I'm grateful for. Will gets it. He gets sometimes my brain is confused and I don't understand. Especially if Will has Natalie with him, Natalie understands it even better. I tune out my brother though as he hates when I snoop on him and continue braiding Kits hair, or trying too. Eventually a knock occurs on my door and the knob twists open as Natalie Manning enters my room, she's not dressed in scrubs but she's looking as Natalie as ever. "Nat" I run into her comforting motherly like arms as she squats down to my height. "Hey Lulu. Owen's at my in laws this week, seeing his cousins in Nashville so I thought I'd come over and see my favorite girl." I look at her with a glint of happiness but also knowing that Jay probably said something to her and Will. "Did Jay call you?" Nat smiles as she sits on my floor gently playing with my hair "he said something to Will and I as we left our shift. He's mad at himself for what he said earlier, so Will is talking with him. While the boys talk though I'd thought maybe we could have a girl talk." I like when Natalie, Stella, Sylvie and Kim allow me to have girl time with them, so I can't say no even if I know Nat will tell Will and Jay. Natalie pulls me up a little further into her lap so I'm looking at her. "Can you tell me about what happened in school. Because, when I heard the news I was surprised. That's not my Lulu." I nod my head "I know. I just don't get the stuff." Natalie looks at me with small smile "Lulu, what stuff?" "Math. I just don't get it. And Ms. Miller wants us to be the best and if I'm not my friends will make fun of me, and and" instantly all the things I was thinking and feeling come out as I cry in Natalie's lap. Eventually, Natalie stands up with me in my arms not wanting for her to let me go for once today feeling greatful for my small stature. We come downstairs, something I know has happened even if eyes are clogged with tears. Instantly I'm in a new pair of arms, smelling like wood and a hint of hand sanitizer, so Will. I know Will is changed out of his scrubs and in more causal clothes based on the way the shirt material feels on my skin. It's probably one of his northwestern sweatshirts, jeans and his hokas which is a classic outfit of my biggest brother. Will rocks me back and forth slowly as he, Natalie and Jay talk amongst themselves. I hear the oven preheat go on and eventually Will moves over the couch with me in his lap forcing me to open my eyes. "Hey baby girl, wanna tell me what's going on?" Will speaks in a gentle tone something I know he uses with his patients especially when he treats kids. Somehow Will always has the right tone to talking with me, unlike Jay at times. Not that I don't love both my brothers but like earlier Jay just didn't get it. "Ms. Miller is the real problem" Natalie spoke a she sits down next to Will on the couch placing her hand on his knee. Jay finally speaks up from the kitchen with a Diet Coke in his hands "Why didn't you tell us Ms. Miller was posting passes around the classroom. That's not okay Lulu." I shake my head burying my hands in Wills sweatshirt "I didn't think anything of it. She wanted us to have a friendly competition and work towards being the best in class. Everyone already talks about my old shoes and my family. I figured if I didn't pass the quiz everyone would say something about me. And I didn't want to disappoint anyone or for anyone to think I'm dumb. You always work so hard for me to go to that school, and " before I can speak anymore Jay hand touches my face which means he's now kneeling down on the ground next to the couch. "Luanna Kitt Halstead, you never disappoint us in school. Please don't say that again or that you are dumb. You are so smart, but if you are struggling or a teacher does something bad you have to ask for help. We as your guardians have the need to know to help you. If you genuinely don't get math we can help you, do you not understand the material?" I nod my head "multiplication and division is so hard Jay Jay and Ms. Miller doesn't answer my questions. She moves so fast even when I ask for help. She seems to ignore me." Jay shakes his head and mutters "that bitch" I laugh softly as Natalie smacks Jays head "Jay Bennet Halstead." Natalie always has acted like a big sister to Jay and I and this time no different. "Sorry Nat." Jay huffs as he cusps my chin "Even with all that Luanna you can't cheat on a test. That's wrong and you got in serious trouble. No matter how much Will and I disagree with the punishment it's a punishment and it's staying. You also get no IPad and no play dates for a week. We are also gonna email Dr. Willows tonight about Ms. Miller and see that during your tutoring time at school we have you with another third grade teacher." I nod my head, that seems fair enough. "Now that's solved, can I have a hug kiddo and tell you I'm sorry about what I said. I was mad and I didn't know the whole story." I nod and leap from Wills lap to Jay's who easily catches me "woah kiddo I'm not going anywhere but I'm sorry." I wrap my arms around Jays neck and we all sit there for a moment like one big family until the oven goes off letting the adults know our salmon can be put in the oven to bake. "Alright kiddo, dinner, shower or bath then we can go over some math problems okay?" I nod my head as Jay stands up plopping me on the kitchen counter as Will puts the fish in the oven and Natalie sets the table. Like I said one big family, even if it's not like anyone else's. It's not perfect but unlike Ms. Miller we Halsteads don't believe in that kinda thing.

Chapter 5: “evil facebook babysitters” (pt 1)
Summary:
No school and both brothers means Lulu has to go to the babysitter, even if she doesn’t want to.
Chapter Text
Lulu - 9
"I don't need babysitters. I'm almost ten now." My brothers smile softly at me, each of them in their specific work outfit for the day. "Lulu, we both have to work and you don't have school today because of their water main break. We're both working till late tonight maybe even a 24 hour shift if we have to. You have to go the sitters." I roll my eyes. "I stayed home alone last week." Will nods his head pouring his half and half into his travel coffee cup "yes you did but it was for an hour and we were grocery shopping, and going to the dry cleaners completely different than a whole day and over night." I huff and puff, my face close to matching Wills hair "you guys are so mean. your gonna stuck me with some mean sitter you found on Facebook." Jay rolls his eyes pouring his black coffee into an old US Army travel mug. "Yes, we're sending you to a reform babysitter who eats misbehaving strawberry blonde ten year olds. They particularly love that diabetic blood you have." I make a smug look at my brother as I have a sip of tea myself, something my brothers let me start doing this past year. "You can't make me go." Will shakes his head "trust me, you're gonna not be so mad when we drop you off." I shake my head taking a bit of my toast "I highly doubt that."
We pull up in front of firehouse 51, and Matt Casey gets out his hands over his chest "so I'm a mean baby sitter that your brothers found on Facebook?" I laugh at the man who was essentially a brother to me at this point. "they didn't say it was you, idiot." Matt carefully ruffles my hair through Jays truck window. "come on, let's go kiddo. shift starts soon and we're happy to have you around here for it." I hop out of Jays truck my backpack bouncing against me as I do. Jay passes Matt my diabetes bag from the passenger seat "she's got enough in here for the shift so if she needs anything else you might have to use your supplies." Matt nods and wraps an arm around my back "we got her Jay." With that Jay drives away and Matt gives me another nuggy "alright kid, let's go inside it's getting chilly out here." Matt was right, the first real freeze had happened the other week so it was clear it's getting to be mid November at this point. The cold was probably a reason the water main broke at FGA but everyone who knowns FGA knows that they aren't gonna share that news about the building being so old it's having these problems. We enter the truck floor and Kelly is there getting out of the Squad truck, his fire pants still on. "Squirt is here !" I run into Kelly throwing my backpack onto the ground instantly regretting it as my Chromebook was in their for virtual homework and class work I had to do today. Kelly smiles as he picks me up placing me on his hip so we're making eye contact even though I'm almost ten. In moments like these I'm glad I'm so small for my age. "I hear that you're gonna be here all day. Is that correct?" I nod my head leaning into the smell of fire and a bit of car smell like he was at a car accident which always made me shiver a bit. Kelly and Matt knew the story and have for years so as soon as I shiver, Kelly wraps me tighter for a quick second before placing me back on the ground. "We're gonna have a good day. And after shift if your brothers still have to work your gonna come over to our house and spend the night." I nod my head and look at the ground for a second comprehending this news before smiling, but the smile is short lived when Kelly speaks again "and don't think your getting out of doing virtual class today or any of your homework." With that I huff and go into the kitchen to say hi to the rest of my "family".
Stella and Sylvie are drinking coffee going over some magazines and smile when I come in. "Oh there's our girl!" Sylvie affectionately wraps me in a hug before Stella plants a kiss on my forehead. "Are you excited for to spend the day here ?" I shake my head no and listen to Hermann laugh and respond "I guarantee that response has to do with Casey and Severide telling her she still has to do her homework." I roll my eyes and flop onto the floor like a rag doll, not caring it's dirty. "School is so hard and dumb." Hermann comes over leaning against the counter drinking his coffee "that is not an excuse Luanna." His tone and voice are radiating parent right now and unfortunately I can't really argue with him. He has been so good to me all these years, really taking me in to his family along with Cindy. They were that older guardian presence like Trudy and Mouch that sometimes I really needed. I grunt still on the floor looking at Hermann who smiles softly "kid, you got all passes last month and made honors English for next year. you are smart but you gotta do your work. I don't wanna hear you tell me you're not smart." I was about to respond with "that's what the kids in my class say about me" but lucky the tones sound for Truck and Ambo leaving me here with Squad. Hermann kisses my forehead affectionately before running out with the rest of group, at the same time Kelly and Joe come in to the room. Kelly now is carrying my backpack which I dropped on the floor in the garage when I saw him. "Just saved your backpack from being run over by the ambulance." Kelly is smiling at me, as I still sit on the floor "not helping Kelly." Joe laughs "Lulu, that floor cannot be comfortable." Kelly laughs as he grabs more coffee "squirt is just moping cause she knows Casey and I won't let her get away with not doing her homework. I'm also guessing Hermann had one of his token conversations with her at this point because Lulu has this look of knowing on her face." I roll my eyes at Kelly "so Hermann talked to me. I just don't get it. Why can't I just have no school for one day. Virtual school is so hard." Kelly shakes his head "you have school work today because your school doesn't know how long you guys are going to be virtual. a water main isn't the easiest thing in the world to fix kiddo. you gotta stay on top of your work before thanksgiving break." I nod my head still sulking on the floor before Kelly walks over and kneels down in front of me. "Luanna Kitt, enough sulking let's go." I roll my eyes again and flop onto my back looking up at the ceiling tiles of the kitchen. "Alright I guess it's time." With that I feel myself get flipped over Kelly's shoulder into a fireman's hold as he carries me over to the kitchen table while Cruz pulls out a chair. Kelly plops me onto the chair and pushes it in while Joe gets my backpack out for me. "Luanna you're going to write down all your assignments from your google classroom. Then you're going to get started on them." I roll my eyes again, earning me a gentle and loving smack on the head just like Jay does. "You keep that up and I'm gonna pull a Benny Severide." I look at Kelly with a hint of curiosity "what does that mean?" Kelly laughs into his coffee "let's just say it wouldn't be the most comfortable day to sit and do homework." With that my eyes go wide and I open my Chromebook logging into the goggle classroom portal of FGA. Kelly sits down across from me pulling out his phone which sort of annoys me "you don't trust me do you." He shakes his head "not a lick right now kiddo. your brothers told Casey, Stella and I about your current anti academic stance on life." I wanna roll my eyes but know that Kelly wouldn't love that right now so instead a sigh a bit and open the portal now that my password has unlocked it. "So, how much do you have to do?" I show Kelly the classroom calendar page which outlines all my classes.
- 4th grade Science: 2 Quizzes (one past due)
- 3rd & 4th grade Math: 5 assignments (two past due)
- Advanced 4th grade English: all caught up - 2 virtual assignments due tomorrow w/ high makes
- Elementary School Health: 5 assignments, 2 quizzes and 1 online test (5 past due, and test needs to be redone) w/ failing marks
- Advanced Elementary History: all caught up - 1 virtual assignment due tomorrow w/ excellent marks
- Advanced Elementary Spanish :all caught up w/ excellent marks
Kelly looks at my calendar with a bit of disappointment and also pride I guess. "Well we don't have to worry about your Spanish grade, guess having Antonio and Gabby as your tutors all these years paid off." I nod my head "they want me to go into middle school advanced Spanish next year." Kelly smiles "that's impressive kiddo but the rest of your assignments especially your health are not great. Four missing assignments; what's that about?" I shake my head making eye contact with Kelly "I just don't get health class and understand it." Kelly nods his head "you happen to have a doctor for a guardian and multiple paramedics, and combat medicine trained police officers in your phone as people to ask for help. you didn't think to ask for some?" I think for a minute. Kelly maybe was right, I should've asked for some help before it got so bad. God I hate when the older individuals in my life are right. "I guess not. Thought I could handle it by myself you know." Kelly reaches across the table being careful to avoid his coffee mug "your never alone kiddo. we're here to help you. Let's make a list of all the assignments that are past due and start with those. After your done with those let's do the stuff that's due tomorrow and then we'll see about getting you ahead in some classes. It's all about one step at a time okay." I nod my head and take the paper and pen that Joe has set on the table making sure to start with everything past due, especially those quizzes and tests even if I hate writing them down. Kelly looks at my list after a few minutes and nods "what do you wanna start with ?" I shrug my shoulders and give an honest answer "nothing. mostly go back two weeks to when I should've not selected random answers on my health test. At least Coach Walter's is nice enough to let me re do it, once they realized I was the only kid in my class to not pass it. Everyone got high to excellent marks with it." Kelly's eyes go big "Kiddo, it's that bad?!" I nod my head taking a sip out of the Owala water bottle I got for Christmas last year from Natalie. "Yeah. Like I said. Thought I could just I don't know, get smarter over night. Like when I take my mutligummy bears." Kelly laughs and shakes his head "a multi vitamin of a bear that taste like watermelon does not help you understand germs or the major bones in the body." I nod my head "I thought the radius and ulna were in your head on this last quiz." Kelly laughs looking at the online quiz that's full of red answer boxes, something I had to redo. "Those are in your arm Lulu." I shake my head sassily "well now I know that. I just didn't before." Kelly nods looking at the multiple pages of incorrect answers "we might need Casey for this, and a heavy prayer." I look at Kelly with a smug expression "you don't know the bones of the body." Kelly smiles laughing "I do kiddo, but Casey just retook his paramedic exam so it's a bit fresher than mine. I have to take my again the year after next since I did mine last year." I nod my head "so then we have to wait for Casey to come back with truck." Kelly shook his head no "I didn't say I couldn't help you kiddo, so don't twist my words. We're gonna start with the assignments and quizzes first. For this test we will wait for Casey. Why don't we go to my office so it's quieter?" I nod my head packing up my stuff in my backpack while Kelly takes my assignment list and my diabetes backpack. I trudge to his office like a prisoner reporting to their job, no amused and not excited for what lies ahead. Kelly opens the door of his office and goes to grab Matt's office desk chair for him to sit at while I use Kelly's chair. Kelly's desk is surprisingly clean with a bunch pictures on the wall surrounding it. There's some of him and Stella, him and matt, him with his sister Katie and two nephews Kasper and Karson and there's a bunch pictures of me and him, me with 51 or of me with him and Matt. My favorite is one from my a lacrosse tournament 3 years ago when I first moved in with my brothers and started to play. The trophy in my hands is so big it's taller than me, and the boys are holding posters with my number on it 14 Each number representing the day of my brother's birthdays, February 1st and November 4th, so 14 which adds up to my birthday September 14th. That was one of the first times Kelly and Matt really spent a lot of time with me and since then they've filled that big brother role quite well. Not that my own brothers aren't my big brothers but it's different, they are kinda like dads and sometimes too serious now. Like they don't act like my brothers when they should, and they don't act like dads when they should. My thoughts are interrupted by Kelly wheeling the chair in with my other backpack ontop of it in the seat. "Alright we're gonna start with your health assignments from 3 weeks ago, which is 2 of them. Kiddo, those are so late." I nod my head and take a seat turning to face him as Kelly puts my diabetes backpack on his bed and my assignment list on the desk. I grab my laptop getting the memo and click on the assignment which was about naming and labeling the major systems in the body. Kelly looked at the assignment which would take anyone like 10 minutes in total with a side eye and then back at me "you really didn't do this assignment. Luanna Kitt it would've taken you like 15 minutes tops." I take a sip of my water before responding "okay easy for you to say Mr. Lieutenant and Paramedic." Kelly rolls his eyes this time just like Jay and Will do when they are annoyed "it doesn't take a paramedic to know where the lungs are in the body, and what system they are in?" I look at the diagram for a few minutes before responding "digestive system." Kelly almost spits out his coffee at my response, which I take it means it's wrong. "No Luanna. Not even close." I take a second look at then try again "endocrine system" Kelly shakes his head grunting. "No sweetie, you see an endocrinologist for your diabetes. have they ever asked you if you can breathe." I shake my head "so there's your answer." With that there's a knock outside the door and Matt walks in smiling "sorry, police assist that took a lot longer. how's it going in here?" Kelly looks at Matt with a help me look I've seen Jay give Will when they are trying to help me with math "she thinks the lungs are in the digestive system." Matt laughs and sits on the bed "I'm sure we can figure this all out."
Three hours later, 2 calls one for each of squad and truck, only two health assignments and the quiz were done. It was painstaking and invovled us switching to English to finish the 2 virtual assignments due tomorrow. It was easy work, but hard when going back to health. I look at my cellphone (an old iPhone of Jays) to check the time at see it's only 11:43 am. Still so much of the day and shift to go, it's an odd shift day with timing so they would be done by 6:00pm. Too long for all this homework. Matt had gone downstairs to play cards, while Kelly had to fix a chainsaw that broke on the previous phone call so I'm alone in Kelly's office still. Suddenly, my Dexcom beeps showing low which makes sense. I hadn't had much for breakfast, and was busy doing homework. I even took a brain break to play some lacrosse outside against the back wall for about 45 minutes which proceeded to fuel my 2 finished English assignments. I mute the alarm and try to continue my homework which was now going to be my virtual history assignments. That I could complete when I was low, high or half asleep as it is my second favorite subject beside Spanish. It would be my favorite but my teacher Mrs. Hayward rarely gave assignments that were hard, and she was a very boring teacher. Sitting in class was so boring especially with it only being second period, by then the vibes of a new school day had gone away and it was nothing but her quite slow tone in her voice. I'm so glad though that I can get the first assignment done in 20 minutes before my dexcom gave another alarm of being low. Suddenly there's a knock on the door and Kelly is leaning against the door, a shop cloth over his shoulder with some oil stains on it. "How's it going here kiddo ?" I nod my head "fine, thanks Kelly." He walks over to me and looks at me again with a more in depth look "your low aren't you?" I shake my head "I'm fine Kelly. Probably gonna take another brain break after my next history assignment is done that's all." Kelly looks at me again the smell of oil and gas getting bigger as he gets closer to me "are you sure your okay ?" I nod my head trying my hardest to keep this latest low under raps "fine, I'll be down in like 15 minutes. just have to define vocab and there's like two questions that are long answer. We're learning about colonial America so new stuff but all of definitions are in the dictionary in the end of the chapter." Kelly nods his head "doesnt sound too bad. I fixed the chainsaw with the help of Capp so make sure to take a break soon so we can hang. trying to be a good babysitter you know." I nod my head smiling at Kelly as he ruffles my hair, just like Matt did this morning. Kelly looks at me again with a bit of that investigation face Jay has too before leaving the room, my shaking hands hidden underneath my sweatshirt an old Cubs on of Will's. Even with Kelly leaving the fear of being caught is still there as the door remains opens, so instead of trying to get back to learning I go up and close the door and then get back to work. Just a few more assignments then I can take a break. After 30 minutes I close my eyes, just to take a brain break. Just to take a brain break.
I'm awoken by someone shaking my arm and the smell of smoke, burnt wood and metal along with a hint of cinnamon which means it's Matt. I open my right eye to see Matt kneeling down before me a truck hat on and his fire pants but suspenders hanging loosely down over his legs. "I just got back from a lift assist. Kelly had to go on a call when we left but told me you didn't seem okay. Told me you're probably hiding something, either a low or high. I find you half passed out so I'm going to test your sugar and help you correct whatever is going on. Then you are going to take a break for a few minutes. When we said for you to do your homework, literally closing yourself off in an office wasn't the extreme that we wanted, kiddo." I nod my head slowly while Matt moves the chair so I'm now fully in front of him. I try so hard to hide my shaking hands but no use. He's Matt and I'm Lulu this is how this works, and by now it's obvious especially with the way my heads pounding another sign of a low and could us some sugar. Matt seems to understand and grabs my diabetic bag from Kelly's bed and opens my testing kit. He grabs my manual kit clearly not trusting either me or what my monitor says as he is connecting it to me hiding something from him even if that wasn't my direct idea or intention. Matt gently yet firmly wipes my finger with a disinfectant wipe before testing it. Matt puts the test strip in the device and a bright bold and red 59 with a down arrow comes onto the screen. Matt grabs two glucose tablets out of my backpack and puts them in my hand "chew them now kiddo. we're gonna go downstairs okay?" I chew the tables and go to stand up as Matt puts my diabetic backpack on his back. I stand up and almost fall down cause I'm dizzy, but Matt grasps my arm firmly. "Alright we got this kiddo. Nice and easy okay? You say the word and I'll pick you up." I would rather not have that happened and be treated like a baby so I settle for Matt wrapping his arm around my waist and mostly holding me up right. Eventually we reach the common room, glad everyone had gone to do their own thing after the last call so we were alone. In that moment, Matt doesnt hesitate to pick me up and place me on the couch. "Matt I'm fine." He shakes his head "nope. I'll be back in five minutes after I get my gear off. you are to not leave the couch." I roll my eyes which causes matt to snap his eyes back to me "I said your not to leave this couch." His tone makes me relaize he's not joking so I listen, and wait until he comes back
this time all his turnout gear off and his hat back in the truck. Matt's lieutenant stature though not changing as he approaches me "you should've told us Luanna. I'm serious." I nod my head a bit embarrassed by the dramatics of the whole situation but I know that's a low low. I know what I'm supposed to do, tell an adult as I have been telling them since I was six years old. Still it never gets easier and after all the school drama I didn't wanna make a big deal out of something else. Casey gently grabs my hand forcing me to make eye contact with him "I'm not mad Lulu, just wish you would've told me. I'm gonna see what lunch Jay packed you and have you have some of it to help. Afterwards we will do some more school work and check again. If it's still not high enough I may give you some glucose, okay?" I nod my head and look at my nails while Matt gives me half my almond butter and strawberry jam sandwhich and carrots before closing back up my lunch and putting it in the fridge. He also grabs my water bottle from wherever I last had it and refills it to the top. "Eat and drink kiddo okay." I nod my head as Matt grabs some coffee from the pot and sits on the couch next to me putting an arm around my back and turning the TV onto a rerun of national treasure. Eventually, Stella and Hermann come in to the room not saying anything really besides talking about some Mollys stuff. Squad must have come back halfway through my sandwhich half because soon Kelly, Joe, Capp and Tony come into the room to get their lunch too. Well, Kelly steals a carrot off my plate and so does Matt but still Kelly ruffles my hair and goes to get some food from the fridge. Neither say anything about the low or the homework but they don't have to. It's already been talked about and they know not to push it, maybe Will and Jay are right. These my babysitters aren't so bad after all.
