Phil wakes up to rain hitting his window. The light of the sun is refracted by the droplets, casting a pale rainbow against the bolstering grey clouds.

The most noticeable thing to Phil at this moment is the absence of weight on his chest - Dan must already be awake. This thought is confirmed by the sound of clattering pans coming from the kitchen, accompanied by the faint, hummed melody of a song Phil doesn’t recognise.

It takes him a few minutes to get ready, and then he’s padding into the kitchen to find Dan leaning against the counter. As usual, he’s fidgeting; Phil smiles fondly at the way Dan chews on his hoodie strings, thumb swiping over his phone whilst his eyes flit up and down.

He doesn’t notice Phil for a long moment. Phil feels contentment and a soft sense of pride take hold of him as he admires Dan standing in his kitchen, barefoot and engrossed in whatever video is playing on his phone screen. He’s making them breakfast before he knows Phil is awake, and Phil can smell the sweetness of pancakes before he even peers into the pan.

“Morning,” he says, his voice carrying into the otherwise quiet room. Dan meets his eyes and a smile splits his face.

“Hey,” says Dan. There’s colour in his cheeks, a soft pink that Phil could notice in its faintest form. He is pulled into the kitchen by an invisible force and tucks himself into Dan’s arms, feeling them squeeze him gently in greeting.

“Pancakes are almost done,” Dan murmurs into Phil’s hair. Phil nods, rubbing his cheek against Dan’s chest and holding him tighter. Dan begins to shift his weight from one foot to the other, swaying, and Phil’s breath escapes him in a soft, content sigh.

He is right where he wants to be.

They eat breakfast to the sound of raindrops bouncing around on the road outside. The pancakes are delicious - Phil asks Dan for more once they finish their respective stacks, and then blames him for filling his belly up too much so early in the morning.

“Your eyes are just bigger than your stomach, baby,” Dan laughs, peeling away from the sink and drying his hands on the dishcloth. Phil watches the way his fingers squeeze the material and wishes those hands were on him instead.

“Come here,” he murmurs. Admittedly, his tone of voice holds some adamance, and Dan doesn’t hesitate to meet him at the dining table, quickly kneeling and slotting himself into Phil’s arms. Dan rests his head against Phil’s stomach and lets his hair be played with, curling his arms around Phil’s waist with a small exhale. Phil lets his nails drag against the skin on the back of Dan’s neck. He feels the shiver that runs through his boyfriend and does it again, knowing that the touch makes Dan’s eyes droop.

“Tired?” Phil asks quietly. It’s been a few minutes since Dan settled onto the floor and he hasn’t moved very much at all. What Phil receives in response is a weak nod, so he waits a further few seconds for Dan to raise his head and meet his eyes.

There’s a moment of recognition between them as Phil takes in the deep brown pools staring up at him. Neither of them want anything but this; a peaceful rainy morning spent held in each other’s arms, nothing but swelling love and warmth between their bodies.

Wordlessly, Dan straightens up and takes Phil’s hand, squeezing it as he leads them both back to the bedroom. Phil had known from the moment he woke up to rain that this would be where they’d end up. The sheets are still crumpled and there are two pillows on the floor, but Dan just steps over them and lifts the covers, letting Phil climb in before he joins him and lays one leg over Phil’s waist.

Dan’s curls smell sweet, like coconut. Phil kisses the crown of his head once, then again, before letting Dan slide down his body to rest his ear over Phil’s heart.

As the rain continues to fall, Phil’s heartbeat slows, and he drifts comfortably into sleep knowing that he holds the world in his arms.
