Work Text:
This was not at all what she expected.
When she was assigned this ‘small’ task, she did not think it would mean signing up for the possibility of being pinned against a wall by the very target of her mission.
Yae Evanescia, hailing from the Luna kingdom, is constantly mentioned in talks of mercenary work. Despite her appearance, she was constantly mentioned in passing as the most efficient of them all in the kingdom. This was because her lethality alone was at least eightfold of those that came close to her. Therefore, in secret, the monarch of the Luna kingdom had given her orders in secret to ‘meet up’ with the royal advisor of the Sol kingdom, Yao Guang.
“For she has committed great treason, despite being in a neighbouring kingdom, by declaring blasphemy and accusing us of declaring war on them in the near future,” decreed the queen, in the dimly lit room that was the royal quarters. “You are to meet with her. Quietly.”
The fox was not daft. She knew what the monarch meant by meet, and had done so many times, all with the sweetest of smiles and the sincerest of apologies before her target suddenly disappeared. With the serene breeze of the night, she departed, swiftly leaping from building to building— crossing kingdoms—towards her destination, the Sol royal castle, carrying nothing but her equipment and a small bit of excitement.
So now, there Evanescia was, seemingly held in a trance by the very person she was supposed to dispose of. She supposes she did end up meeting her anyways, though it wasn’t in the intended way.
“I will ask you once more, assassin. Are you or are you not an ‘envoy’ sent from Luna, here to kill me?” Yao Guang asked, eyes almost piercing through the other’s soul. E's Notes: So pretty to think about!!
“Everyone has to be an envoy at some point, right?” the fox answered— ears twitching— with her normally sly demeanor being almost nullified at this very moment. She did not know if it was because of the knife pointed at her throat, or because of just how captivating Yao Guang’s gaze was to her. Who wouldn’t be frozen like that if she looked at you??
Yao Guang smirked, loosening her grip on the wall behind Evanescia and instead moving that now free hand towards Evanescia’s ears. The other trembled and, in an attempt to reassert her control over the situation, gripped the advisor’s hand almost instinctively. It was firm, but not tight to the point of harm.
To this, Yao Guang chuckled. Not only did this assassin fail at ambushing her, she’s also trying to
And then they—
And then—
And then…
Evanescia’s mind was blanking. She had stayed up for the last few hours— staring at her tablet for the first two— working on a writing prompt she’d received. It was to write a story set in a fantasy world, though the romance aspect was purely from her own mind.
Just then, a buzzing sound started to make itself known, vibrating the table it was on.
“Yello?” the girl answered, quickly exiting the writing website on her tablet. She didn’t see the contact name on her phone before picking up, so she ended up waiting a minute or two for the other side to speak to identify them. If she had to guess though, it would be her roommate Yao Guang.
“Hey.” the person Evanescia correctly guessed to be her partner replied. “I’m out right now, what do you feel like having?” she continued.
Yao Guang was out at the moment, on a grocery run and to get a pick-me-up for the both of them. Aeons know that they both need it, especially after they both went through a hectic time in their lives although separate. She was in line at the boba shop, very patiently waiting for the other’s reply.
“Mmm…” she began thinking outloud, just loud enough to be picked up by her phone’s microphone. “I’ll have the matcha boba. I heard that it’s been making a resurgence lately.”
“Alright, so plain milk boba it is.” the other quickly blurted out, before the line was cut off.
“Wait, what?”
Yao Guang hung up. Evanescia let out a small groan before continuing to cast her focus onto her writing again. She knows Yao Guang frequently does this as some sick and cruel form of selfish entertainment, so she’s now left her boba prospects up to fate. Which may not be the best idea, considering the other’s job.
“Okay, now where was I?” she began muttering to herself.
“Oh, right! Maybe after this they…. they…” she continues, thinking really, really hard.
“Oh, I don’t know! They kiss! End of story!” she blurts out in frustration. If a scoreboard existed, it would tally as Evanescia—1, Writing—67. She really did love writing, though it gets on her nerves every now and again.
“Struggling, are we?” a voice asks, suddenly making their presence known.
“Yeah, well, you try working with a three day deadline!” Evanescia retorts, reaching out her hand to grab the cup of boba whilst not looking.
“Plain? You were serious?” she asks, head turning towards the other and her voice having a tinge of sadness.
“No, that’s mine, silly.” Yao Guang says, grabbing the drink and handing her the correct one, accompanied with a kiss on the forehead.
“You’re annoying sometimes.” Evanescia responds, turning her attention back to the tablet as the other walks away to her side of the apartment. It was decently sized, though not exactly a mansion, so the two have adequate space to themselves yet it feels as if they share one giant room.
“Are we still up for dinner tonight, by the way?” Yao Guang asks, from the next room over.
She forgot.
She completely forgot.
They were supposed to be out on a date in two hours, and here Evanescia was, on her tablet and typing away instead of getting ready.
“Uhm, yeah, of course. I’m basically already ready to go out, so it’s just you.” Evanescia lied through her teeth, knowing full well she wouldn’t go out in her current, very casual, outfit to a fancy restaurant.
Though she has heard about the stereotype of rich people typically wearing everyday clothes to fancy places, but she wasn’t sure of its validity.
Looking at the tablet for a split second, she turned it off and set it on the table, choosing instead to quickly get ready for their date. Getting ready for her meant a rigorous regiment of makeup, accessories, and about a few million outfit changes, all in the span of 15 minutes.
Quickly enough, two hours passed, and the two were at the location.
“Nine Realms Pavilion? For real?” the fox asked excitedly, to confirm whether or not she was dreaming. “But I thought you had to wait at least a month or two in advance for seats?”
“I have my ways.” Yao Guang replied.
Of course, by ways she means a lot of money and convincing the owner to put her reservation on the fast track.
The fox immediately leaned in for a hug, not putting much thought beforehand, and held Yao Guang for a good few seconds.
After that was over, the two walked to their table. It was perfectly handpicked to have a good, if not, the best view of the moon.
Something Evanescia loved.
“I still can't believe you managed to score us a table. I’m so ecstatic I could just—” Evanescia's words suddenly stopped dead in their tracks.
Yao Guang got up from her seat, and leaned towards her. Evanescia was interrupted by a short, yet sweet kiss from the other.
“That, you mean? I’ve got you covered.” she teased, sitting back down on her chair.
Evanescia froze for a few seconds, processing what had happened, before nodding frantically.
Yao Guang chuckled, gazing into the other’s pink pupils, perfectly matching her pink hair and, now, pink face.
“I can see the moon’s reflection in your eyes, and it’s even brighter than the real deal.” she continued. “I hope you continue shining as such, so the moonlight continues to pale in comparison to yours.”
The rest of the night went on smoothly, a few heartfelt words along the way, and ended on a very, very high note.
