Sprint prompt: "...That's not a plan."

Notes:

Loosely interpreted the prompt, mostly used as an excuse to write angst.

Work Text:

“But I took them all out! I’ve fought larger numbers before when I was on my quest!” Wild was incredulous.

“I don’t care that you’ve done it before. We’re facing threats none of us have experience with,” Warriors returned, frustrated.

“All of those were enemies I have experience with.”

“That’s not the point!” He threw up his hands. “What if you hadn’t been expecting something about that encounter? What if something went wrong and you needed help and none of us knew where you were?”

“But nothing went wrong! I didn’t need help! I don’t understand why you’re making such a big deal out of this!” Wild raised his voice.

Wars snarled, and Wild flinched. “I’m trying to make a point!” He stepped forward, forcing Wild to take a step back. “You have to think before you act. You can’t just run headfirst into fights by yourself and expect it to be fine!!”

He was yelling by the time he got to the end of his sentence. Wild stood frozen, stunned into silence. He watched as Wars paused to catch his breath and turned, addressing the group at large. “Some of the people in this group seem to think that it’s okay to go off and engage large groups of enemies alone, as long as you’ve got some kind of magic item.” He eyed several of the worst offenders over the past week. “It’s not. For any of you! I don’t care how experienced you are! It. is. not. acceptable. I know you’re used to doing things on your own, but you’re not traveling solo anymore. You don’t have to do it alone, and you shouldn’t do it alone, because it’s not. safe.”

It seemed Wars had come to the end of his speech. The mood of the campsite had lowered considerably. Wind and Hyrule looked particularly cowed, while Twilight glared a challenge in Warriors’ direction. Time simply sat off to the side, watching the group out of the corner of his eye as if he’d been expecting something like this.

Wars turned back to address Wild. “We’re a team now. When you choose to be reckless it endangers all of us. Do you understand that?”

Wild swallowed. “Uh- yeah.”

“Are we in agreement, then?” Wars scanned the group. “From now on, if any one of you encounters a monster camp on your own, you will come back and alert the others. No more fighting solo. Is that clear?”

Various nods and low murmurs of agreement followed. Twilight still glared, saying nothing.

Warriors wordlessly went to his pack by the log bench, retrieved his sewing kit, and sat down to continue mending his scarf.
