Wait!” Katara’s voice stopped the spirit before it could vanish into the night.
Silence settled over the camp as the two women looked at each other across the flickering firelight, an unspoken understanding forming between them.
Then Katara looked down. “Aang,” she asked softly, “is this actually something you want?” There was no accusation in her voice, nor anger, only curiosity.
Aang gazed up at her blearily from where he knelt at her feet, and Katara had the sudden, horrifying realisation that some deeply traitorous part of her actually liked having him look at her like this.
“I don’t–” His voice caught midway through the sentence, breaking apart around a wet, trembling breath. He pressed a shaky kiss to the center of her palm. “ –want to upset you anymore.”
“Oh, sweetie.” Katara cupped his face again, thumb brushing gently beneath his eye. “You won’t. I promise.” She leaned down to press a kiss to his tear-damp cheek. “I want to give this to you, willingly,” she murmured. “But only if it is what you want too.” Her forehead rested briefly against his. “Is it what you want?”
