As you may have noticed, Archive of Our Own recently upgraded its search engine. This change included a whole bunch of new highly requested features, and it wouldn’t have been possible without your donations!

One of the big highlights of this upgrade is the new easy-to-use exclusion filters. Don't want any trace of angst in your fluff? No problem! Just select "Angst" from the list of Additional Tags to exclude. If you can't find the tag you want to avoid in the provided lists, just type them into the "Other tags to exclude" field.

Want to get even more in-depth? There are some handy hidden search operators to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

  It's in the filter options. There now is an 'exclude' list beneath the 'include' list, which wasn't there before.

      When you have a large screen, you should see this on the right:

        I turned off my addblocker and refreshed it and made sure the default site skin was what i was using and it just isnt there. i have a different search format that you do. my searches take up a whole screen not a little sidebar... No sort and filter at all.

Would be nice if they added a cover picture option for stories or a picture option for stories that you can put at the top of the chapter. It would be helpful to show what characters look like in your story. The new features are nice, but hopefully a picture option for stories would be added at some point as I'm sure people would like to display there Oc's in stories or what characters look like in stories.
Anyways thanks for the upgrade and hope to see you exspand a lot more in the future.

    Thanks for that, but I wasn't exsactly talking about embed images as much as I was refearing about loading saved images. I was talking about like loading saved images from your collection of pictures on PC at the top above the chapter instead of links or embeded images. Kind of hard to explain unless someone tried Wattpad before, but this site is still great. Basically I thought it be easier then having to load images to a site just to get an url to embed or load. Also another good change would be private message system for people to private message people instead of having to just message from comments.
    Anyways thanks for the reply and I'll keep that in mind. Not that I plan to post my picture to another site just to get Urls just to post them.
    Possibly what I was talking about is direct images that are already saved.

      Just a thought, but private messages and hosting people's saved pictures to display them in stories might take up a lot of space on servers, and servers cost a lot to maintain. I do like the idea, I'm just wondering whether that might be a reason why that stuff is not a priority.
      There are a bunch of websites that will host your images for free pretty easily if that's a concern, like imgur for instance, and will often even offer the code to embed it in a html page. I do get it might be a hassle, but just a heads up, that's how I do it.

      I get what you’re talking about. It would be nice, but for now it’s pretty easy to embed your own image. I put mine up on imgur (on private) and use the link they provide. It only takes a few seconds to do. Another con is that it might lead to more art theft... e.g. people just googling images to use as their cover. :(

        I often use Pinterest, by uploading the image on to a locked (private) board. That might work for the stealing concern

  Wattpad is also using embedded images just like they're explaining for AO3, it's just that Wattpad has a built-in system to let you upload and post the images in one step, and on AO3 you have to do the same thing the old-fashioned way one step at a time. In some ways that's better, because it forces you to understand exactly what you're doing instead of hiding all the steps, and it means you keep complete control over your images instead of giving them to the website like you do with Wattpad.
  But AO3 has had built-in image hosting on its wishlist since it opened. Like people said, though, it's very resource intensive, and it also means you have to have extra staff and security making sure people aren't using it to do things like host illegal pornography or other things that violate the TOS. Unlike Wattpad, AO3 doesn't have ads and investors to pay for things like that.

    I don't know the mechanic's behind Wattpad so i can't be sure, but I do believe that embeded images means you need a URL code. You can not get a URL code directly from the PC pictures instead of a website. Which means that it's not embedded at all, but rather a direct download. I do know that it used to be embaded, but apparently they changed that and made it so you can directly download a picture from the PC instead of a Website. Anyways I'm not going to try to be an expert on this, because trying to understand a damn computer is not possible.
    I was simply stating an idea, but understand your concerns. Whether they do or don't is up to them. Just thought it be nice for a change instead of having to download picture to a stupid website just to get a URL when you could have just directly downloaded them from PC. Also I do believe that was why they came up with Explict, Mature, ect content, but understand the concern with that as well. Anyways this is just what I was thinking along with the private Pm system instead of having to reply directly to a comment.

    That's true and yet their is still the chance that the imagination does not precieve the character properly as well. I'm sure everyones imagination works differently so sometimes some people get a different picture then others. The Imagination only works so far and is not always accurate.

      You seem not to understand the purpose of written fiction. It is not a visual medium. People will and should imagine a character as they like from the written details the author provides, whether the author considers their image "correct" or not. And if you're writing fanfiction, your readers will already have an image of the character in their minds.
      Are you one of those writers who feels the need to describe every tiny element of every character's appearance in great detail, for paragraph upon paragraph, by any chance?

        I don't see why your getting an attitude with me when I was just simplely stating an idea, but if you going to be that way then don't bother replying. Whether you agree or disagree is not the point here. I was just giving my thoughts about some ideas. Also I have gotten pictures done of my characters before and yes I payed for them. Why you might ask? Even though I like giving a destription of the character I still want to showcase what the character looks like. Nothing wrong with that at all. Just because some people like to showcase what their characters look like in pictures is no crime at all.
        Simply I was stating something. All this should have been done in over with already. Like I said I was just stating some ideas the last few times. If you want to get an attitude do it with someone else not me. No point giving an attitude just because someone threw out the idea of pictures. Some people enjoy that and others don't. It's a matter of preference really.

Our donor files exist in their own format, inaccessible to all but two Development and Membership staffers and one Finance staffer, and are not linked to any user accounts you may have on AO3 or other OTW websites.
  Should we not require details like name and address (which we're legally obligated to acquire from all donors who become members), Paypal would provide them due to the nature of how their service operates. Even if you completely bypassed our donation platform and donated to our Paypal account directly it still provides the details you gave to Paypal when completing the transaction or registering an account. While we definitely appreciate your need for privacy as we attest to above, there is no real way to donate anonymously online.

My safe internet surfing app just added A03 as a blocked and inappropriate site. I added it to the exemption list, and it was still blocked. BIG mistake, app people. I cancelled what had been a very nice app subscription, telling them that I did not pay money to be upset. Then I added the value of the app subscription to my donation. I have never regretted my A03 donations over the last four years. As society gets effing paranoid and stomping on perfectly respectable sites, I see the value of my donations being repaid tenfold.
