The Organization for Transformative Works is pleased to announce the following candidates for the 2020 Election (in alphabetical order by given name):

Edited July 26: Per an announcement, Tyme Ladow withdrew from the ballot.

Because we have 3 seats to be filled and 6 candidates, the 2020 election will be contested – that is, the members of the OTW will vote on which candidates fill the seats.

The Elections Committee is excited to introduce the candidates to all of the members of the OTW! Included in this post are links to short Bios and Platforms written by the candidates. This post also marks the beginning of our Q&A period, during which we invite the public to submit questions for the candidates. Additionally, we will be holding a series of live chats – dates and times for those are to be announced based on candidate availability. Information on the voting period and how to vote will also be posted shortly.

In the meantime, there is a timeline of Elections events available here for your reference. Read on to learn more about our candidates and how you can submit questions for them!

Platforms and Bios

We asked each candidate to provide us with a Bio that sums up their professional and fannish experience, as well as to write a Platform about their goals for their term on the Board by answering the following questions:

Why did you decide to run for election to the Board?
What skills and/or experience would you bring to the Board?
Choose one or two goals for the OTW that are important to you and that you would be interested in working on during your term. Why do you value these goals? How would you work with others to achieve them?
What is your experience with the OTW’s projects and how would you collaborate with the relevant committees to support and strengthen them? Try to include a range of projects, though feel free to emphasize particular ones you have experience with.
How would you balance your Board work with other roles in the OTW, or how do you plan to hand over your current roles to focus on Board work?

Question & Answer (Q&A)

Candidates will also answer questions from the public. Anyone may submit questions via the Elections form. Please submit all questions by 11:59pm UTC on June 29 (what time is that where I live?). All candidates will answer each question submitted, subject to the following restrictions:

Questions can be a maximum of 50 words long.
Questions must not be repeats of questions from the Platforms. This is to allow candidates to spend their time answering new questions.
Similar questions will be grouped together so candidates don’t have to repeat themselves. Elections staff will decide which questions are similar enough to group.
If you have a follow-up to a Platform question, please specifically mention that it is a follow-up so it isn’t treated as a repeat.

The posting date for answers will be chosen depending on the number of questions received. Posts will be spread out, arranged by topic, to make it easier for voters to read all the answers.

What steps will you take to support fans of color, address racism on the AO3, and to facilitate action and change within the OTW to support racial minorities?
How are you listening to fans who are speaking out against racism within the OTW, and in what ways can you qualify your commitment to making meaningful radical change? Can you admit that the OTW has made mistakes regarding racism, mistakes that have harmed fans of color, and commit to change that centers these fans' perspectives and experiences, and places them in positions of power?

    To elaborate, I am asking if candidates will commit to placing fans of color in positions within the AO3 & OTW; specifically, positions where they can make change and have their voices heard.
    For example: A recent open letter to the OTW (Google "Open Letter to the OTW on Racism in Fandom" for the full text) calls for the OTW to hire a professional expert to advise on racism.

    Stitch and the others who have addressed fandom racism are not "antis," and to portray them as such is racist harassment. They have addressed and discussed racism (and specifically, anti-blackness) in fandom, and how the current structure of the AO3 allows harassment and racism. For example: this anonymous comment. You are specifically calling for black fans who have spoken out against racism to "DIAF." This is targeted racist harassment and it's wrong and disgusting.
    I suggest you take the time to educate yourself on how racism is a rampant problem in fandom, and how it actively harms fans. Listen to what they're saying. This is not the work of antis.

        Note to everyone:This is an obvious troll and an obvious attempt to derail the conversation. I’d recommend not interacting with them unless you plan on going in circles all day. As noted the OTW has announced they are making a statement, whether or not that will be satisfactory remains to be seen, but for now all we can do it wait and not have random arguments in the comments.

        You have replied to my original comment asking how the OTW's candidates will handle fandom racism and derailed it to harass a black woman. You have misrepresented Stitch's work, after choosing to bring her into the conversation, calling her names and wrongly calling her an "anti." This is targeted racist harassment, not criticism, not conversation. This is exactly the kind of racist harassment on AO3 that the OTW needs to address.

      Maybe you're using a different definition of "anti" than I am. For me an Anti is someone who makes judgements about a persons morality and character over what they ship and the type of fiction that they like to read/create. With that definition Stitch and her clique are antis, considering how they will happily declare anyone(including other fans of color) as racist for shipping Reylo(ignores a poc male character) or Finnrose(implies the black main character isn't good enough for the white main character, and the character Rose herself is anti-black WTF?) Telling fans of color to "decolonize their ships" and calling them accusing them of internalized racism for liking the ships she deems as "racist."
      Add in that yes Stitch does support harassment of people creating fic she deems racist(which again might just mean person ships the wrong ship) no matter how much she claims she doesn't. I'm sorry but i don't see any other way to interpret a line like "make their online lives hell" in regards to "racist" fic writers as anything other than supporting harassment campaigns to get them to delete their work. Which again only has the sin of being the wrong ship.
      Racism (and not just anti-black racism) is a problem in fandom because it's a problem in real life and maybe they have some good points to say about it. But until Stitch and her crowd and admit and acknowledge that no individual ship is inherently racist, and decouple their own preferences in fiction from what they consider is and isn't racism they can not be considered to be acting in good faith, and everything they say and suggest needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt. Also it would be nice if they could acknowledge and correct their own anti-asian racism because those fans deserve better treatment too.

        Incredibly well put. P much everyone I know is real nervous about Stitch being centered for all these reasons. They are an anti, and frankly a massive portion of Fandom has been living with anti harassment for literally years now. Any and every move the ao3 makes has to be done with the full knowledge a loud and vicious group of people actively want to undermine the archive. The fact no one seems to want to confront this and elevate the voices of bipoc pro-shippers, many of whom have suffered from racist bullshit *for antis* and have quite a bit to say about this topic, is baffling to me. White fan people need to make sure they are looking into actionable and meaningful changes, not just a bandaid for their white guilt.

        Stitch(and her circle of friends) being elevated and treated as the arbitrators of what is and isn't racism during this time makes me nervous too and I do only know everything by reputation. It's like the issue of racism blew up and everyone rushed to the first(and loudest) anti-racism voice they could find and didn't take the time to research and really evaluate their positions. I am hoping that more BIPOC pro-shippers get louder and directing the conversation more(I only know of a few pro-shippers and I'm not sure which ones of BIPOC or not) and that people who have been hurt by Stitch and her circle start speaking up and pointing out her hypocrisy, lies, and history of harassment(either that she committed or that she supported)

      They aren't an anti for discussing fandom harassment, they are an anti for harassing and judging people who produce ~problematic fanfiction (i.e. kinks they don't approve of).
      People worry that bad faith actors like them are undermining the effort to make fandom less racist and try to use this to push their agenda for censorship on AO3

      I'm finding it extremely frustrating that Stitch's opinions that align with anti rhetoric are being conveniently ignored and dismissed every time they're brought up. The people who are afraid of this are people who have endured abuse from antis for years, and they include fans of color. Why can I spend ten minutes on twitter to find other voices on this matter and none of them are being addressed? Have you educated yourself on what other fans of color have been saying and the solutions they've suggested, or are you dismissing everything that does not line up with you as a dogwhistle?

To everyone wondering about a statement. As said by former volunteers on the last admin post, a statement of that kind would be made by the OTW and not necessarily A03 itself, and the OTW is currently working on a statement. Just putting this here so people don’t make the same comments ❤️

I've always found the concept of users paying to vote - of members-only voting - deeply, deeply fascinating. This is a tangible way in which the OTW and the 'our' of the AO3 feed into each other.

  As far as I remember when I donated in the April drive, part of the reason why donating >$10USD = membership = ability to vote is because they can then ensure one member gets one vote so voting isn't rigged.

      I wouldn't say it's that, it's more than you can link one email donor/one email account to one vote, so no one can sent up multiple accounts/donor emails unless they really have the money and time to, in order to get more votes.
      This was answered on https://www.transformativeworks.org/donations-and-membership-faq/ before the link went down so I guess you can go find a cached version that I can't access on phone.

        Why do you require a membership fee to give someone the right to vote in OTW elections?
        Like many nonprofits, the OTW uses a membership fee as a straightforward and easy-to-check requirement to ensure that each member is a single individual. Otherwise one person could create multiple membership accounts to have multiple votes in our elections.
        These fees also go to help support the OTW—to pay the operating costs for both the organization and all of our projects, so that we do not need to use advertising or charge fees to users. We intend to keep our minimum donation low to ensure that it is not a barrier to entry for anyone who cares about the organization, but we hope that most members will give more if they can!

    I can see that. In the past I have wondered, is charging any amount of money truly the fairest way to open the elections to the largest number of AO3 users? For I have also seen what's been done to the voting rights of citizens across the world in the name of preventing fraud. But I've never thought about it that deeply with regards to OTW elections. Frankly, I never considered it a productive use of my time.
    Certain events of the last month or so - and the OTW's... response to the events of the last month or so - have compelled me to more seriously interrogate this space. So why not imagine a different way of running the elections? Even if only in this comment?
    Can I ask, then, when you donated at least $10USD for the first time, how did you receive confirmation that you were a member? And how will you receive access to the voting system? Not having ever donated even so much as 1 US cent, I've no idea how the process works. Do they send confirmation over email? I would be interested to learn how they are ensuring that a person with $20USD, two credit cards, two email addresses and a VPN cannot vote twice. (My thought being - if voter fraud is still possible presently, why not just make the elections free?)

      Those questions you have are best answered by a volunteer, because I don't know. The thing I remember most clearly, while the FAQ is down, was 'oh, that makes sense as to why you don't want one person having more than one vote and why you can't donate on someone else's behalf, or gift a donation under someone else's name'. Naye, on DW, was (as I last recall) offering to PayPal people $10USD so they can have the voting rights in this election if they're short on financial means, to contribute to changes like this.
      My invoice, after I donated, noted "Do you want to be an OTW member? ($10 minimum donation)" and reminded me which checkbox I selected.

        As for how do members access the voting process - voting instructions are emailed to each member some time before the elections, with an access link to test the ballot and make sure it works without issues. When the elections themselves open, members are emailed the link to their actual ballot.

      So, I don't know what the official answer is to this question, but I imagine you're right, a truly determined person could get an extra 1, 2, 5, even 10 votes if they really really wanted. However, this pales in comparison to what would happen if there were free elections and someone got their 10,000 twitter followers, most of whom had never even heard of AO3, to vote the way they told them. Basically, the request for $10 and joining as a member, means that people with an actual stake in OTW are the ones doing the voting.

        Good point, Anon! I was thinking about that, too. Yea, one person committing voter fraud would absolutely be different than one person committing voter fraud and inciting their many followers to do the same. If I had any sort of platform (regretting my social media sabbatical now 😅), I might ask some dedicated KPop fans what restrictions they've seen successfully implemented to combat fraud in open, online voting polls. Their feedback would be immensely helpful on this topic, I think.
        I just keep circling the same question-- actually, no, that's not quite true. I think I've moved in my head from Why can't the elections be free? to What could be done to make the elections free?
        Beyond and beside the topic of voter fraud, I am also thinking... some of the most frustrated, most disillusioned users of this website may not ever donate money to the OTW. And I think my question would change again, because if those users cannot vote... then what is the value of the current election process? Beyond the cost of admission, I guess. I am turning this question over in my head now. It might be best if I ponder this further in another space tho lol 🥴

I used parallels familiar to me to help me work through my own thoughts on the OTW's election process and the paid membership required to participate in it as a voter.         The most frustrated, most disillusioned users can easily jump ship to another site. This is a virtual space, which makes it inherently different from voting about things that affect you where you live. When bigots say "if you don't like this country, then leave!" they're being idiots. People don't usually have the money and means to just pack up and physically leave. But online it's totally different. If you don't like this site, your vision for what it should be is completely different from what the board members want... well, you leave. AO3 and OTW don't govern all of fandom.
        Free elections could work, but again there would have to be limits. Perhaps volunteers could be given membership in exchange for their help. Perhaps membership could be opened up to account holders who have been active for X amount of time or there could be voter registration where your info has to be authenticated.

        Haha, you contain multitudes, chewy! 🥰 Your second paragraph offers such beautiful, intriguing ideas for extending voting access to more users - but this would potentially also include the users in your first paragraph, the ones that you say should just use another site if they're frustrated with this one. Multitudes!
        (I do get what you're saying, though, about, you know, curating your own online experience as much as possible. But if a user is frustrated or disillusioned with this site because of bigotry that they've encountered here, and maybe also because of the OTW's response to that bigotry, I guess I just don't see how saying, 'well, then leave,' online in that instance is experientially any different than saying it in person.)

        I'm not saying it's a bad thing if frustrated users could also vote. If they want to stick around and fight for the changes they want to see, that's great and ultimately will make AO3 a better place. However, AO3 itself was created out of frustration with other fannish spaces, so if some people have really lost hope in this archive, why not jump ship?
        I can only speak from personal experience, but I've been told to leave online places if I don't like them, and I have done just that. I left LJ, FF, FB, tumblr, and it always felt like a relief to cut off whatever was pissing me off there. I've been told to leave the country IRL, and that... whoa man, that hurt. I didn't *choose* to be born there, was a minor at the time and legally *couldn't* leave, and this guy was telling me to hop on a plane and uproot my entire life OR ELSE just to shut me up. The difference is I'm choosing to be here, there are no huge consequences if I leave, and no muscle-y guy is going to pummel me if I keep saying things people disagree with.
        Also, it makes more sense to think of AO3 as a service rather than a place. If people got really mad and all stopped donating, stopped using the service, it would die. If users are *that mad* at AO3, leaving is how you hurt them, just like if it were a business.

        I'm glad that you have felt relieved when you've stopped using different websites. And I would wager that there are many users of AO3 who were beyond frustrated and disillusioned, and who did exactly what you suggest: stopped using this site. I can't speak for how that's felt for those former users. (I've never personally considered this site particularly welcoming or safe, so I've never really been all that disappointed by or invested in the way OTW has managed the AO3 over the years. That's just not the lens I've applied when evaluating my user experience.) But as far as the impact that that has left is concerned - well, how can you measure who isn't using a site? And why would you? There will always be users who wholeheartedly offer their generous financial support to the OTW, no matter how they manage AO3, so even if we classify this site as a service, there's not really much incentive for the OTW to consider the concerns of people who aren't using it anymore. Hm. Maybe this goes beyond voting. Is a new space necessary? And if so, what would that space look like? I am turning this over in my head.
        I obviously don't have any answers here... but I appreciate the questions that the responses I've received have helped me ask. In this... ever-expanding thread! 😅

  The OTW is an organisation. The board is elected by members of the organisation. That's how this works - you don't get to vote for who's on the board of Google either. Or a more fannish example: Only members of my Austrian uni's anime club get to elect our anime club's president and treasurer. Random anime fans from my hometown who aren't members don't.

    Are these apt comparisons? Does your Austrian anime club have to pay to elect its president? Is the relationship that Google has with its site and its users and employees sufficiently similar to the dynamic that the OTW has to AO3 and its users such that the two organisations should have voting practices in common? For that matter, do they? Does Google require payment of a membership fee for people to participate in electing its Board?
    If I have anywhere severed the concept of members-only voting from the concept of paying to vote in my comments, as opposed to splicing them together, then that is a weakness of me typing aloud as I think. But I should think my focus on paying to vote in the OTW elections has been made fairly clear? Maybe not. Maybe... I regret ever leaving a comment on this post to begin with.       I'm a different anon, but I think you might find reading up on "membership nonprofits" (specifically in the USA) helpful. Membership nonprofits allow people not directly working in a nonprofit (the OTW is a 501(3)(c) nonprofit) to be a part of the decision making process. Otherwise, they're non-membership and there is no vote for the board of directors. Why pay for membership? It's a nonprofit, meaning they make no revenue outside of donations. So with a paid membership you accomplish two things: 1) you tie an identity (such as a name and billing address) to a single vote preventing voter fraud, and 2) you sustain your nonprofit's operations through essential donations (which are used to run the nonprofit by way of web fees, contractor fees, and other things you see in the budget).
      (As a side note, clubs, even ones at school, often have a membership fee to purchase things like space rental, or in their case, maybe buying anime to watch. Google is a for-profit megacorporation so it isn't comparable to a small not-for-profit organization because they operate under different tax laws.)

      For reference my Australian university anime club did have to "pay" to become a member, and only members could vote for the board. There were some events where anyone was free to attend, but they were not considered members and did not get access to services restricted to members.
      We also had to do the same with the Anime convention I was part of, as there were legal requirements as being a registered organization. So even though people were volunteering significant amounts of time, only paid members could be considered "members of the committee" and those had paid a nominal fee (literally less than money I spent to get public transport to the event) to become members - and only members could vote for the board.
      It's a pretty standard practice for non-profit organizations.

        (Note incase people are confusing Austrian and Australian, I'm not the anon, and I'm really not kidding when I say that it's a standard practice to pay for membership and to restrict voting to membership, even in cases where there is a physical presence available.
        Hell, even the credit union I'm part of, has a "membership" fee, which entitles me to vote for their elections - and they make money off me in other ways.)

    Currently the Chinese social media like weibo are trying to get raid any evidence about this incident, and right now as the people who against the blocking A03 and Lofter are never form to the group yet, of course I know I'm just a small guy but since you asked I will tell you about it.
    My vision is to gather the people who against the blocking AO3 and Lofter as much of person as possible, the XZ fans are everywhere even the Wechat and QQ groupchat are not safe to talk about this staff so here is a best location to be our Headquarters. Also in the same time report this incident to all the major NEWS media and make people notice, I know they may not care about that but I don't believe the news media will not take care of it if there is more than 20+ peoples wrote about the same thing to them. And if we gathered enough of the members from Mainland China or outside country, we can start to having the protest, we we want to protest in mainland china, we can directly go to headquarter of CAC in Bejing, If is in the oversea country, then go to the major Chinese embassy for protest, for example if we want to protest in U.S, we can going to Embassy of china in Washington or NY.
