The bi-annual membership drive of the Organization for Transformative Works is over and we are delighted to say that while we didn't reach our goal of 5,000 new members, we registered a total of 2,660 memberships across 69 countries, bringing our fundraising total for the period to $89,688.51. Thank you so much!

We are so glad that so many of you have taken this opportunity to formalize your support for the OTW. The OTW is a nonprofit organization and we depend on the creative, financial and logistical contributions of fans around the world. As detailed in our recent budget post, the generosity of our members supports our archival, legal, academic, and technological work and helps us to continue to serve our mission of preserving fanworks and fan culture. Thank you!

And if you haven’t yet registered your membership, don’t worry! The OTW accepts both members and donations all year round.

I'm sad to see we didn't reach the goal but at least the 75k from the budget were reached. And I can't imagine that the change in style had such a big effect even if I did miss the progress bar. So probably covid sideeffects. Damn that thing anyway.

    Ah, yeah...makes sense to remove it since they've been smashing records left and right. I can't think of the last time AO3 missed it's financial goals.

Just an FYI for future, but I completely missed that this membership drive was actually the October donation drive. I understand getting more members was your main objective, but I feel the wording on the banner not having any reference to this being the October drive was a miss. A lot of people (myself included) have no interest in the AO3 board, becoming members or voting so I imagine I wasn't the only one who tuned out the existence of the banner and was prepared to wait for the normal donation banner to come later in the month. I'm pretty sure this is what created the low donation total (low compared to previous years). But if getting more members was your main goal (rather than more funds), I guess we can still count this drive as a success.

  The newspost before this one was titled "October Drive 2020: Growing Together". The newspost before that was the budget update that explained that the April drive was so successful that they could put money in reserve, meaning they have more than enough for now.

Was the change in wording and style intentional to gauge the difference from the regular one or avoid the standard troll backlash? I barely noticed this drive and I bet a lot of people who would normally have donated didn't either. The majority of the donors are not interested in the membership per se; just to support OTW/AO3. The bar and the regular drive method will probably bring you more funds.

  The newspost "2020 Budget Update Post" explained that the April drive was so successful that they could put money in reserve, meaning they have more than enough for now. April brought in almost half a million dollars, so fundraising in October wasn't necessary. However, with the backlash of some fans feeling like they aren't being listened to, it makes sense to explain how to become a voter and be heard.

I never got the special social media icon. when I donated, I got a receipt for payment from paypal, but whatever site landing page I was supposed to be redirected to, crashed

Honestly I wasn't a big fan of the change to focusing on membership rather than fundraising as a whole and hope it returns to a more normal format for next April.
