Problems with imports from FF.net

As a number of users have already noticed, imports from Fanfiction.net are not working at present. Our coders have investigated, and it seems that FF.net is blocking requests from our servers. We're not sure at this stage whether this is specifically directed at us or whether it's a side effect of some other action; either way, it's not an issue that we can fix on our end. We're currently reaching out to the folks at Fanfiction.net to see whether we can resolve the problem; however, at present we don't have any ETA for a fix.

We apologise for the inconvenience - thanks for your patience while we figure out this issue!

ETA: This problem also affects bookmarking of works hosted on FF.net, since making an external bookmark involves pinging the site to check it's a valid url. We'll keep you updated as we figure out ways forward with this problem.

Oh pleeeease. Just offer an option to store the bookmark as Private if it can't be pinged at first. It saves having to re-type all the information (e.g. gathering Character info is time-consuming), and the bookmark can then later be published.

Don't know whether this is still a problem, but as far as I'm aware, fanfiction.net has an active policy of blocking web crawlers/spiders/bots (other than the ones they let in themselves). When their system notices a massive amount of requests in a short time coming from a limited set of IPs, it just blocks those IPs. I don't know whether they'd allow AO3 in as an exception to that policy, since its one of the measures they take against their servers being overloaded.

Agree with Mirabilos: if a bookmark isn't "PING"-able, give us the option to store it anyway, so we don't have to re-enter all the info.

  Unfortunately, that also checks to see if the site is really there, so it's being affected by the same issue. We'll be putting in a fix as soon as we can - we just got a little overwhelmed by other issues.

I just did a few tests - it's not against Ao3 specifically, their blocking pings from everyone.

  We've been checking occasionally to see if they're stopped the blocking our imports, as well have reached out to them. As of yet, there's been no change in the situation. If it does, we'll make sure to include it in a news post.

It could very well be possible that fanfiction.net recoginizes this site as a "spam" site. Having multiple "ping" requests from the same IP, just reeks of a possible DDOS attack or a miner-bot. Both, which I'm sure FF.NET would rather avoid.
Any chance you could try the "ping" requests via different systems? That way, it (hopefully) won't look to FF.NET that we're mining stories from them.

  Sorry for the late reply - we didn't realize there was new discussion on this post!
  We debated routing our requests through a proxy server. However, FF.N would quickly figure out the new proxy addresses and block that range, forcing us to change again, and the arms race is on. Additionally, the block may be a factor of server load maintenance, and it's very unneighborly to try to work around those mechanisms. Until FF.N lifts the ban, we don't really have a lot we can do.

I bet you its on purpose. They tend to be dickish about things like that.
Right now they are purging authors and stories because they are going with the soft M version of m rated fics and anything graphically violent or even anything sexual of any nature is being purged and I know a lot of people are pissed. Might get more users on here....a LOT more due to this.

  Lmfao yeah, I agree. As a matter of fact as soon as I found out about this site on FB from another author I looked it up, checked it out and put in my request for an invite. I don't mind waiting if it means I can put up the fanfics I write without worrying about how wishy washy FF is gonna be and junk. XD I'm trying to see if my friend wants join here too... Heck I'll probably recommend it to a few others to join who are worried about their stuff getting pulled too. Good, nice authors with good fanfics/stories who just happen to have a sexual or violent type scene Lmfao. I thought that's what fanfiction was all about yah know? Expressing our inner creativity and "unleashing" our imaginations? Meh, apparently not.

    I have to agree on that one. One of my fics on FFn got purged. (It was a songfic, but when I realized they weren't allowed I removed the lyrics, AND IT STILL GOT TAKEN DOWN!) I intend to dig it out from my hard drive and post it here (Still sans lyrics as they only allow mentioning and minor quoting) and see if my luck turns around.

When I was on here earlier bitching out FF.net I forgot to mention that favoritestracker, http://www.favoritestracker.org/index.php has been able to bookmark and track ALL of FF.net's favorites for nearly ten years now.
The code hasn't changed in a long while either. So maybe if you get in touch with the guy who designed you can fix it?
What he did is that they loaded by profile id. http://www.favoritestracker.org/faq.php
"How does it work?
The Favorites Tracker works by maintaining a list of stories being tracked by all of its users in a MySQL database. Every half hour, it contacts the fanfiction sites in order to figure out how many chapters there are in each of the stories it is tracking. The Favorites Tracker also has a list of stories that you are tracking and how many chapters you have read in each one of them. When you go to "View my Favorites", the number of chapters you have read is compared to the number of chapters that the Favorites Tracker thinks are in each story. If there are unread chapters, that entry is highlighted in green.
Perhaps the most complicated part of the Favorites Tracker is the way that it figures out the number of chapters in a particular story. For sites where you have an account, it loads your favorites page and extracts the number of chapters in each story in your favorites list from there. For stories that are not in one of your favorites lists, it has to actually load the page with the story on it and look though the HTML to figure out the number of chapters in that story. This process is rather slow and is done in the background."
So maybe you can try it this way?

Much will depend on how Fanfiction.Net has their block set up; if they're blocking our range of IP addresses, no amount of coding will sneak around it. Hopefully though, there'll be a solution here. Is it possible that FFN has blocked imports because this feature makes it too easy to 'steal' fics as well as import them? As only the URL is needed to import a fic, it might potentially lead to problems such as users claiming works that are not theirs, etc... If possible, maybe it might be better to add an 'account verification' feature to authors who wish to import fics, perhaps something like what Dreamwidth uses to import posts?

  Huh - I had never really thought of that...
  It's a valid point, though I doubt that's the reason. It's still possible to run download tools on FFN stories (like FlagFic or FFDown) and reupload them elsewhere, so I suspect that this is more likely just a method of traffic control more than blocking.
  That being said, it would be interesting to see if the A03 coders could add some form of account verification - I know FFN logins now use captcha, so you'd probably need more than a simple mechanize script to get through the login...
  ...I now kind of want to try to code this.

    ...Now that sounds interesting. XD Personally I haaaaaaaaate captcha, though, because I always get it wrong half the time =__= but it has to be there, so ah well. Would it be possible to use some kind of login verification for the other site, such as FFN, since captcha can be impossible to decipher (to me, at least... T_T) and stops bots but not humans, so it actually isn't the best thing to use... I rather like dreamwidth's importing feature for journal entries, as they just require you to login to livejournal/insanejournal and then it's pretty simple to import from there, without the need to go through captcha.
    (I've given up on the import feature, myself, as I like to use additional tags when posting on AO3 - one of it's many perks over FFN - and also because I usually have to seperate the author's note from the main text, since the import can't distinguish which is which. Now I just go to "post new" and crosspost my fics manually, even though the rich text editor drives me nuts because - as we all know - it's terribly buggy.)

      You're welcome, though I probably should clarify that I'm not with A03 (was a volunteer a while back, but not currently). I was the author of the FFDown program that downloaded fics from FFN amd AFF (though I haven't updated it in a while - it probably breaks on the new FFN layout) - I just find this stuff interesting.
      You're not alone on the captcha stuff - I hate it too. Unfortunately, that looks like the only real way to authenticate a user with FFN, since I don't believe they have any external sign in systems. On the plus side, I just looked at the FFN login page, and it appears that the captcha they use does use a constant image per login attempt, so the A03 could have a crawler try to log in, and present you with the same image the crawler "sees" over on FFN.
      In livejournal's case, they support openID as a login method, so I'm not surprised that it would be easier (though I'll confess my knowledge of openID internals is close to nill).
      On a completely unrelated note, now that I'm re-reading this thread - I recognize you! There was a thread over on livejournal about people to archive from FFN due to the great purge, and your name came up. Glad to see you're on A03.

        But still, it's awesome that you'd take interest in something like this. I have no knowledge in this area, so all I can do when some bug crops up is to keep trying and flail helplessly XDDDDD
        On a sidenote I haven't tried FFDown before, since I usually don't download fics (I've done it manually before, that was hell) unless they're really that good and in danger of getting taken down. Especially with FFN's new blahblahs going on. Ah well.
        ...I have to admit I didn't quite understand the captcha and the crawler part @_@ but nevermind. XD
        I don't use OpenID a lot, though it usually works, EXCEPT when I try to log into ficly. That site has the buggiest login system I've ever come across, I swear. Can't even access my own account now, and nothing's solved even after I raised the issue to the support staff. (It doesn't help that they're using an external service for reporting problems and submitting feedback, either...) Compared to ficly, everything else is almost too good. XD
        *blinks* You do? \o/ Did I comment on that thread or was I just mentioned by someone else? Somehow I don't seem to remember... (If you happen to have the link to that thread, I'd like to take a look out of random curiosity...) The great purge doesn't affect my fics as I haven't posted anything that could get kicked off yet, though some of my favourite authors might, sooooo I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that FFN will be terribly inefficient (as usual) with the whole mess. XD I like AO3 for it's freer formatting and tagging features, I guess, and because it looks nicer. FFN's default font size used to be too small (I always set it to maximum size for more comfortable reading) and now it's still pretty weird. Reading on AO3 is generally much more comfortable...

  Thank you for the suggestion! Account verification is an interesting suggestion. Currently the importer only functions as a logged-out HTML check - hence why it has issues with certain javascript-based age verification systems. We don't know why the block was put in place: if it was for work security, this would help; if it was for bandwidth, it wouldn't be a solution. I will pass it on to the coders for them to discuss!

One reason that we've been fleeing to other sites from FanFiction is that they are censoring our stories, and even removing them without warning. I'm now afraid that if I update one of my best stories there, it will be removed before I can copy it to a word document.

  We did find out that FF.N is blocking us at the server level (it's mentioned in one of the questions in this post: http://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/226), as is their prerogative. We've a workaround for bookmarks and 'inspired by' links, but unfortunately there's nothing we can ethically do for imports.

So what I'm thinking is that this is a purposeful block from fanfiction.net (FFn). The FFn terms of service, section 4.C, states that you cannot access User Submissions (which as you'd expect basically means anything that a user puts on the site) "through any technology or means other than the Website itself."
Basically, the import function of AO3 is a violation of FFn's terms of service. As a side note, so is an app I wanted to make that would let you store the stories on an Android-based phone or tablet for offline reading, as well as keep track of your position within the story so that you can leave in the middle of a chapter and pick up there later, and is based off of an iPhone app I used before I switched to Android. I don't particularly care for that part of FFn's ToS. I liked that app, and hated it every time they changed the HTML, which broke downloading stories in the app.
One idea I have (read: just came up with while typing this) is to make a fanfiction.net import tool that uses JavaScript and runs in a client browser. This would make it so that the request to view the story comes from the importer's IP instead of the AO3's IP. It would take the HTML of the story pages and go through it, pull out the story itself, and import that. Since it would use the HTML, it would look like just a standard request to view a story in a web browser - especially since the request is, in fact, coming from a web browser.

  There are several technical workarounds we could use to circumvent fanfiction.net's block. However, our coding team, in consultation with the other Archive committees, has decided to respect their enforcement of their Terms of Service and not code a workaround. We've reached out to FF.N several times for them to lift the ban. As of yet, they haven't resolved the issue.

  I think you're right about FF.net deliberately blocking all imports. Too bad FF.net can't stop us from making our FF.net works available to other sites. FF.net needs to either lift the ban on imports or lose all its users to more welcoming sites. FF.net is not the only site in town.

Hi,
I have recently had correspondence with Steve who is the Admin for flagfic.net
He had been messaging ff.net for weeks asking why some requests weren't working, well... they finally responded and said that they were revoking the permission he'd been given. Fanfictiondownloader isn't working either. I think this is a major thing, fan fiction.net do not want bots accessing their servers and are blocking all incoming requests from all known websites that provide this kind of service.
Steve has had an official response asking him to remove support for their site.

    I have a fix for you, in regards to the copy-pasting issue. Please just follow these instructions and you'll be copy-pasting in no time ;)
    On Chrome:
    Right click the page. Hit “Inspect Element”.
    Ctrl+F search “.nocopy”
    There will be two lines of text - you’re interested in the one highlighted, and the line directly above that.
    Right-click the highlighted line and hit “edit as HTML”. Remove the text “class=”storytext xcontrast_txt nocopy”“, and leave everything else.
    Right-click the line directly above the line you just edited. right-click and choose “Edit as HTML”.
    This time delete “; -webkit-user-select: none;” Be sure to leave the end quotation mark where it is and delete the beginning semicolon.
    Close out of the “inspect element” page with the grey ‘x’ in the top-right corner of that section, then highlight to your heart’s content.

      I have literally just had a response from the creator of fanfictiondownloader.net - not to be confused with the creator of the calibre plug-in - he has released a new version of his program. I will copy paste his response to me in regards to his amazingly epic fix!!!!!!

      4E: The requests of my program are send serial. A user that instantly
      clicks through all chapters is only slightly slower. If they complain
      about this point then i'm simply going to programm a 2 second "wait" in
      between each chapter download.
      I've also contacted a local lawyer to check if the TOS are legal in my
      country and or/if my program complies with local law.
      To fix your downloadinmgproblem: update to 0.8.3
      So basically there you have it folks.
      Now in relation to this website, what you guys are going to need to do, is use the fanfiction downloader to 'download' either a pdf/rtf format from ffn - and re-upload it to this site. I am so relieved that I have a program that works XD - I guess it's true what they say, for every genius that comes up with a 'blocker' an even bigger genius comes up with an un-blocker XD

FF.net really needs to end the blocking because it's ridiculous. One possible way is by downloading your own FF.net works (and fictionpress works) and re-edit them a little and then try to work on uploading them that way. No guarantees of this method working but it might be worth a try.

    Too true there. This is where back-up copies of our FF.net works can come in handy since we can simply post those works from our back-up copies and put them as new works if we have to with a little information about the work being an FF.net work. FF.net really needs to get a grip and stop blocking everything--and lighten up on fanfics that are rated somewhere between M and MA/E (those are fanfics that are a strong M but not quite an MA/E).

        It frustrates me too.
        FFn doesn't have a say in whether or not we post our FFn works onto A03 or not. All it means is we can't import our works from FFn--we'll have to post them here the hard way.
        FFn really needs to get over it--our works we publish on FFn are OUR property, NOT FFn's property, and we do have the right to publish our works on more than one site without having to put up with any crap from FFn.
        You might have to make a hard copy of your FFn works to use here. Best of luck with this one.

        It's not a perfect solution but it may be the only one.
        Definitely write FF.net and let them know your works you publish on FF.net are YOUR property, NOT theirs, and you have the right to publish your works on more than one site and FF.net has no right to tell you you can't.

        Actually, there is a way to get around the FF.net copy/paste block. Just access the fanfic on the mobile website since it does not have the copy/paste block. Just change the www. to m. in the URL bar and you're good to go.

        I've also copied and pasted my FF(dot)net fanfics from my hard copy (it pays to keep back-up copies) to here and so far it works like a perfectly-cut gem.
        I've only started the process of putting my FF(dot)net fanfics here, though, and I don't intended to orphan or delete my works because I know there are fans out there.

We do understand your frustration - a number of sites are locking down their content in a way to prevent even copy/pasting from the page itself, let alone allowing the Importer to function. We've generally found in such situations that using your browser to View Source and copying the HTML directly into the Post New form is a decent workaround. Was there ever a work-around to allow bookmarking an un-pingable page? It seems like I can't bookmark an external work on fictionpress. (I guess I could link to google, or some other site, then post the real url in the notes to the bookmark? But that seems a little silly.)

  We adapted the external bookmarking code for ff.n links specifically, back in 2012, and hadn't heard about issues with any other sites so far. We'll add a fix for fictionpress bookmarks in one of our next deploys. Thank you for letting us know!

  My apologies; we did some more testing to confirm the issue and it looks like fictionpress.com is generating https: pages by default, which confuse our external bookmarking form. This is a known issue that's on our list to fix; until then I'm afraid you have to manually remove the s (so you're getting a http: URL) to be able to create the bookmark. Sorry for the hassle, and let me know if you still run into issues!

    Yes, I tried that, as well as removing the story title from the URL. Unfortunately, fictionpress auto-redirects http://-style URLs to https://, so I suspect that the http site will remain un-pingable. In any case, I can't bookmark the http'd version either.

      Oh, it looks like putting in fictionpress.com/xyz without any preceeding markers will save the bookmark. We've made a note of the issue and will work on a fix. Thank you again for notifying us!
