As part of the celebration of International Fanworks Day on February 15, we're delighted to announce that the OTW will be hosting a live chat with three authors who have written both fanfiction and published works.

February 8, 2015: Live chat with authors on "Why Fanworks Should Be Celebrated" from 17:00-19:00 UTC (What time is that in my timezone?)

The chat has concluded but a transcript is now available.

Although we have done our best to choose a time that will suit fans in several timezones, the scheduling is ultimately dependent on guest availability. For anyone who can't join the chat live we expect to post a transcript of the event within 24 hours.

We would also like your input! You can submit as many questions as you'd like for our guests, but as we have limited time we can't guarantee any particular question will be included. We'll be looking for questions that are broadly applicable to all authors and are a good representation of the "celebrating fanworks" topic.

We will be collecting questions until 23:59 UTC on February 1. You can either post your questions here or submit them through our Communications form (just mention they're for the chat).

Also, don't forget to let us know how you or your fandom communities plan to celebrate so that we can give you a signal boost!

Do you think there's any difference in quality between your fanfiction and published work - like, would you ever write something and think "That's good, I'll hold that back for the published work", or do you see the fanwork audience as just as rewarding?
Do you think published fiction does or could benefit from elements more normally found in fanfiction?
Do you think published works will ever attain the level of frankness about sexuality and the diversity represented in fanworks? Why?
Do you think that fanfiction is improving the standard of published fiction? (Eg. because people have access to so many more stories from all genres and writing styles at the touch of a button, they may be exposed to more than your standard school English curriculum, and may find certain things that appeal to them more in that?)
What's your favourite fandom? Who's your favourite character to write? Why?
What got you started on fanfiction?

I'd like to submit a question for the IFD chat, too! I'm an aspiring author myself, and I've been writing fanfiction for 10+ years now. I want to know what I need to do to get exposure for my own writing.
How did you get started and what steps/process did you go through to get published?
How do I get in touch with book/manga publishers without being scammed?
Have any of you done collaborative works, with a graphic novel artist or otherwise?

When writing an original work, is it possible to include specific movie titles/book titles/tv shows,etc without violating copyright laws? For example, in a fan story of mine, sometimes the characters sit down to watch a movie. If all I do is state the movie title but not describe it, would that violate copyright laws for that movie? Can you use the names or real places, like restaurants or stores in a story or does all of it need to be made up? A great portion of my story takes place in our modern world.

  We don't have any details yet about future panel chats but we're expecting to put another one on in September to celebrate the 20th issue of Transformative Works and Cultures. So just keep an eye on OTW News and we'll be announcing the date and participants.
