Welcome to the International Fanworks Day Feedback Fest for 2023!

With over 200,000 works on the Archive to date and countless opportunities to get creative with our favorite characters and settings, Crossovers & Fandom Fusions are among AO3’s most popular tropes. We shared in January that the theme of this year’s IFD is When Fandoms Collide, and we invited you to prepare lists of recommendations of your favorite crossovers and fandom fusions. Today, we’re excited to see what you’ve come up with!

It was a challenge to pick the best one from all of my bookmarks, but I think this fic really exemplifies the best of the crossover/fusion concept.
Why Is Josh's Friend's Uncle Talking to Me About Vampires? by etothepii
It's a crossover of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, two shows which seemingly have nothing in common but taking place in the Los Angeles area. The writer then takes what could be a pretty shallow concept -- What if Rebecca Bunch were one of the Slayers? -- and instead of just using it as a vehicle for a handful of jokes, they use it to examine unexplored corners of both shows. The situation forces Rebecca to actually think about what kind of a person she wants to be, and points out to the Buffy 'verse that sometimes creatures of the night just need a bit of help to live their lives without bothering anyone.

    Yeah, as enormous a site as AO3 has become there is still lots of work that isn't available here (especially non-text fanworks). So without rec lists or rec communities, many of those works won't reach the audience they could without people reccing. Rec communities are also good places for people to ask for help finding specific works as well, and there used to be bunches of fic search communities.
    And anyone using AO3 can rec so easily -- just bookmark and click on the Rec ticky box!

      i like to look at the bookmarks of my readers, my favorite authors, and the bookmarks of people who bookmark the same fics that i do.
      finding good collections is also a good way to find fics. it's gotten me into making my own collections! (feel free to look if you're curious)

        I took a gander at your Collections and I love that you made an open collection specifically for works archived by the Wayback machine!
        "Assumed language barrier" is a great idea for a Collection, too!

If crossovers within a franchise count, I will rec Alternate Realities, Alternate Destinies by ladydragyn. It's Star Trek, McSpirk, the TOS crew gets stuck permanently in the AOS universe and have to adjust to life there. Also, there is Bones' Mpreg! It's different, but also angsty and fun.

Hastily thrown together rec list because I honestly didn't realize the Feedback Fest was *not* the same day as IFD, lol.
The fics themselves are really good and deserve everything, though.
In A Strange Land (Nibelungenlied/Parzival): The Medieval literature rare crossover I didn't know I needed in my life. Laugh-out-loud funny, taking full advantage of the differences in tone, narrative structure, and storytelling devices between the poems it's based on in an elegantly sharp way that's absolutely irresistible and of the various traditions behind those same poems. So clever I periodically reread it.
Tea Journal (Strange Magic/Fables): A story that uses the worldbuilding of one work to highlight the characterization of the characters of the other and bring it to its full potential, taking the readers on a journey moving smoothly from romance to drama to fluff, angsty and tender and fun and sexy until it reaches a beautiful, moving conclusion.
When Wart met the Doctor (Doctor Who/The Once and Future King): A fic I have craved since reading a certain tiny little line in The Sword in The Stone, using an inconsequential moment in the canon to build up a short yet delightful scene full of wonder and fun.
Identity Crisis (Prince of Tennis/Yuri!!! On Ice): A subtly cracky romp that brings two stubborn, prickly characters together via two adorable, fluffy cats with an attitude. How can you not love even just the premise!?
ETA these two beautiful fics that somehow slipped my mind yesterday:
The Pendragon-Gorlois Family Reunion (The Historically Inaccurate Remix) (Good Omens/Arthurian Mythology): A cute, fun story with some nice moments of quiet, understated angst in between, finding thoroughly entertaining ways to play with Good Omens' wit and humor, Arthuriana's penchant for telling the same story in fundamentally different ways and amp up the drama whenever it can, and even certain things taken from Merlin BBC and its fandom. Which is fair, because it was written as a remix of a story about Crowley and Aziraphale watching the show, making it a lovely display of fannish creativity in more ways than one.
Green (Mad Mad: Fury Road/Norse Religion & Lore): A story about redemption, death, and growth and healing -- in that order. As the tags say, it's all about "turning patriarchal myths on their heads." A great rec if you were fascinated by the Norse mythology references in Fury Road, spent way too much time pondering over the writers possibly slipping in a few more implicit ones, were always fascinated by Loki's children and appreciative of more positive takes on them, were always thrilled by kinder takes on death and the afterlife in general, and/or simply felt for Nux while watching the movie.

My favorite crossovers… Most are relatively short - only the Leverage/LOTR/Silmarillion and the Pern/Talents ones get over 10k, I think (along with the Lois & Clark:TNAOS/Beauty & the Beast one, for which I don't have a wordcount but it's certainly a longer fic).

Chronicles of Narnia / Lord of the Rings (books unless stated otherwise)
Cyphomandra - Once a Shield Maiden in Rohan...
810 words of delightful Lucy & Éowyn meeting as children. It's sweet and funny and totally in character.
DesertScribe - other powers and realms that you know not
A beautiful Boromir/Susan Pevensie fic that fits nicely into canon while still wrapping up loose ends and with all the best emotional feels.
AceQueenKing - The Bitter and the Sweet
Summary is: Susan wanders into Rivendell when she opens the door to Narnia after The Accident. It may not where she expected to end up, but not all who wander are lost. It is every bit as good as that promises, and then some. Emotional but in that subtle way, meshes Narnia book canon with LOTR movie canon beautifully, and has a very satisfying gen fic ending.

Fried Green Tomatoes / Rizzoli & Isles
katekane - There's More Than One Version
This gift for me in an exchange crossed movieverse FGT with the R&I TV show for an incredibly beautiful fic tailored to my love of romantic friendship stories. The occasional typo doesn't diminish the fact that it brought tears to my eyes when I first read it.

Leverage / Lord of the Rings / The Silmarillion
nerdsandthelike - by light of moon and ray of star
This one's a real wild mixture - Tolkien high fantasy and Leverage thievery all fused together? But it works! The writer aimed at it being readable for someone who only knew one or the other canon, so if you don't know both, give it a try anyway. I'm very impressed by how much the Leverage characters still feel in character despite the very different tone and setting.

Jedi Buttercup (jedibuttercup) - The Future is Always Changing
An absolutely amazing fic where Cassie Holmes from Push meets Parker from Leverage. In character and excellently written.

Lois & Clark: TNAOS / Beauty and the Beast
Becky Bain - Timeless
This is an amazing crossover, particularly because you only have to know Lois & Clark to read and enjoy it. As you follow their POV, you learn about the Beauty and the Beast world with them. It made the characters of the other fandom very interesting to me (who knew nothing about them), and had logic to how they crossed paths. Very well-written. (Not on AO3, though!)

Pern / Talents (both are Anne McCaffrey fandoms)
dmdomini - The Day Benden Went to War
I had to dig into the Wayback Machine for this one, as it was sadly deleted along with the author's account in mid-2017. You can only get to a certain number of chapters there (I think maybe 20? I've got a copy I downloaded that included the last post, with 42; even that wasn't anywhere near a finished fic), but it's enough to enjoy and see just how amazing it was. It's one of the best crossovers I've ever read; the writer masterfully handled two large sets of complex characters as they intersect, with realistic political behind-the-scenes goings-on. They did a lot of work meshing the internal logic of the different worlds, and I kept marveling at every bit of it. (I'm due another re-read, lol.)

Push / Worldweavers
Morbane - Tangled Strands
This mix of two relatively obscure fandoms (Push has fewer than 500 fics in all, and Worldweavers has fewer than 10!) is handled so deftly, with all characters feeling absolutely true to themselves, and their chance of meeting fits into canon possibilities.

I hope someone enjoys some of these! :D

I hope it's okay if I comment as an author who tried her hand at a crossover for the first time! What I really enjoy about crossover fics are imagining how characters who might seem like they would never mesh well together can actually find some common ground. Here is the link to my crossover that explores how hope can coexist with grief and features Morpheus (from Sandman) and David Shaw (from the Redactedverse.) Figuring out how these two very different characters might have a meaningful conversation, despite coming from different worlds, was too much fun.

If I had to pick just one, it would be this seies, an AU fusion of Teen Wolf/Harry Potter where Stiles is a mysterious transfer student from the US to Hogwarts who is sorted into Slytherin, and Peter Hale is the Defense Against Dark Arts professor. No knowledge of the Teen Wolf fandom is required but any familiarity with either fandom may enrich your appreciation of the author's imagination.
Fusions and crossovers of these two fandoms are quite popular, but typically involve Harry being in Beacon Hills for some reason. It's rare to find TW characters at Hogwarts; here @rightsidethru provides us with 7 short works that reveal more about this version of Stiles who has Peter so intrigued.
End game Stiles Stilinski/Peter Hale, but only the final part contains NSFW interaction. Do heed the tags and read the warnings in the Notes before you proceed with this final chapter that takes place after Stiles finishes at Hogwarts and is employed at the Ministry. Please skip this chapter if you are underage in your jurisdiction or have any concerns.

This is going to be fun, I love crossover work!! I can't wait to see what other crossovers people will share!
I started working on mine years ago while I was taking care of my grandma after a surgery, I stopped working on it cause I never thought anyone would really want to read it until my mom pointed this out to me while she sneakily was reading my work. I decided to finally finish my fic and post it for this amazing crossover work. I hope someone enjoys it!

The Dragon-King's Temple by Kryal (Stargate SG-1/Avatar: The Last Airbender) is already extremely widely read but really deserves that status. Exquisite worldbuilding, competency kink for all characters, great gen adventure plot.

I loved her Stargate SG-1/Merlin crossover. She always has the most original, most in character, actual crossover and not just AU takes, combined with impressive and stellar writing!

One of the first fics I read on ao3 was Conceycat's Housemates series. It's a Being Human UK/Thor 2011 crossover I adore. Its lighthearted prose coupled with gorgeous fanart makes it a fav comfort fic of mine. It also explores themes of redemption, family, and friendship. A long haul at over 1mil words, it's well worth the read.

This is part entreaty, part recommendation. Spaceleviathan, if you're out there, I hope you bring back The Ones Who Stay! This is a Rise of the Guardians/Thor (2011) crossover in which Jack is the son of Loki. Best take on it. Drama, tragedy, humor, and action/adventure with gripping cliffhangers.

Green and Gold by ardna (the sequel, Winter and Hawke is on hiatus) is an epic OUAT/Thor 2011 crossover that combines the epic world traversing drama of OUAT with Thor epic action sequences. The premise is Loki ends up in storybrooke with no memories-- and gross from there!

Some universes just dovetail together naturally. Supernatural and Criminal Minds for one. One have protagonists that are, arguably, wanted serial killers. One have dedicated FBI agents that hunt serial killers…
