Welcome to the International Fanworks Day Feedback Fest for 2023!

With over 200,000 works on the Archive to date and countless opportunities to get creative with our favorite characters and settings, Crossovers & Fandom Fusions are among AO3’s most popular tropes. We shared in January that the theme of this year’s IFD is When Fandoms Collide, and we invited you to prepare lists of recommendations of your favorite crossovers and fandom fusions. Today, we’re excited to see what you’ve come up with!

(Potential) Title: Blue like Cobalt
(Potential) author: Shayminsky
Okay, have to post this to honor all abandoned/deleted fanworks out there (we're forever mourning you). There was a Yuri on Ice crossover with Pokemon of all things, and it was REALLY GOOD!!! I think the user Shayminsky (I think) deleted their account cuz I couldn't find them anywhere. The title was like "Blue like Cobalt" or something. This joint was 300,00 words of pure gold.
Rest assured I did not come looking for this crossover, but it delivered on every account. The Pokemon world was made darker and more realistic with the evil organizations actually being shown exploiting trainers and Pokemon with cruel tactics. Main plot follows Yurio as he begins his trainer journey (a little late at 15, but that's because the region was almost destroyed by a legendary that Viktor managed to subdue by the skin of his teeth!!!). He's getting his badges, getting stronger, meeting the rest of YOI cast who are largely gym leaders.
Viktor and Yuri basically adopt him as per usual. Yuri K. is one of the elite four while Viktor is the current Champion I believe. BIG TWIST, Yuri K. has amnesia and doesn't remember like 10 years of his life. You're probably never gonna get the chance to read this so I'm gonna tell you that HE WAS THE ONE RESPONSIBLE for the legendary nearly destroying the region (and orphaning Yurio). He gets his mind wiped by a pokemon (the pink Jirachi thing), and Viktor (basically his mortal enemy) finds him and chooses to not tell him about his past. Viktor was the only one who knew and was gonna take it to his grave. Yuri finds out in this quietly horrifying moment in a museum where he sort of emulates the statue of the mysterious leader of Team X (or whatever they're called). Viktor is immediately PTSD and slowly Yuri kind of puts things together. That's near where I left off.
There's a whole spy plot where Yurio infiltrates Team X as one of their best grunts and learns their plans for controlling yet another legendary. Otabek is his handler from Interpol. They have a secret base and everything. It was SO SO GOOD, and you'll never read it.

      If you still have the reply from the author in your inbox, you should be able to get a link to the fic. In your inbox it will say something like "(shayminsky) on (Blu Like Cobalt)" and the name of the fic will be a link that, even if the fic is deleted, you can hover over and get the address from (at least on pc). But you should still be able to copy the link on your phone, paste it into a notes app or whatever, and get rid of everything after the work number to access the fic address and copy that into the wayback machine.         Oh my gosh! The trick with deleting everything after the work number worked! Turns out the author is still on the site, but they only have one work up and it's not this one. I'm posting the link I put into the way back machine at the bottom of this. Sadly, it only goes to chapter 26 from 2017, when I know for a fact this fic had over 60 chapters as of 2021, but I'm still just happy to read any of it again at all. Thank you so much for your help!!!!

This is the story about Jotaro Kujo and Jousuke Dongfang in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I am based on the opening chapter of the fourth original book. Angelo is the background of the story. It is a story of a mature man and a high school student. It has not been finished yet. Hope you like it❤️

I LOVE fusion fics!! I am a sucker for three specific types:
Howl's Moving Castle fusion
Pacific Rim fusion
Shape of Water fusion
I read so many of these three AUs but they are all so good!! Off the top of my head, there are these:

This is a Hogan's Heroes/Lord of the Rings crossover that works very well. The author did an excellent job of keeping everyone in character and for a refreshing change in the LoTR fandom, this time the Fellowship ends up in Germany instead of the Heroes falling into the Council meeting at Elrond's House.

A Lord of the Rings/Chronicles of Narnia crossover that is again, very well written. Set before the main events of LoTR, focused mostly on Legolas in Narnia. I liked how the author tied the two universes together. Given what we learn in the Magician's nephew about the many portals to different worlds the ideas are quite believable.

Ten Favorite Crossover & Fusion Fics
azalaea/ King Winchester
(Supernatural x King Lear, Dean, Sam & John, gen, Stanford era)
What if the conflict between John Winchester and his sons over Sam's desire to go to Stanford were styled as a Shakespearean tragedy? This short and brilliant fic does just that. I am in awe.
Mikkeneko/ A Villain State of Mind
(Avengers MCU x X-Men First Class, Loki & Charles Xavier, gen, set post Avengers (2012))
Awesome character interactions between an imprisoned Loki and a mind-reading Charles, who has been sent to interrogate him. This is one of those precious fics with equal appeal to the id and the brain.
sequestering/ Patchwork Hearts
(Hockey rpf x Harry Potter, mostly Sid-centric gen, Sid/Geno at the end, AU)
Lovely world-building and emotional development of the characters. A fic to live in for awhile.
Straight_Outta_Hobbiton/ His Red Right Hand
(Stranger Things x Star Wars, Billy, Steve, El, team, Steve/Billy preslash, AU)
Fusion with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Short and perfect. Billy is a Sith, Steve is a rebel soldier. Fantastic Billy voice, and perfect meld of the two universes. I’d love to read a novel of this.
Martha/ Lovely and its sequel Tatters
(Stargate SG-1 x The Sentinel x Angel, Jack/Daniel, Jim/Blair, Angel team)
Two fantastic novel-length fics with action, plot, loads of angst, delicious character interactions, and an eerie, other-worldly adversary. Superbly written by one of the best in the business.
anaross/ Colors
(Buffy x Firefly, Spike/Zoe, Spike/Buffy)
Set right after Serenity, with an intense Zoe pov, great characterization, and excellent voices of both casts. Memorable and emotionally resonant story, and a frequent re-read.
astolat/ Old Country
(SPN x Harry Potter, Sam/Dean, HP ensemble)
Set in SPN s3, as Dean faces the waning days of his deal, this story is like some kind of triumph of fic writing. The way the author portrays the HP universe is so compelling, I might like it better than canon itself. Dean's interactions with the HP characters (major, minor, and original) are memorable to this day, and they make him an especially lovable character here. In astolat's hands, even the smallest of characters is given their due, and no thread is forgotten. The fic has action, humor, angst, characters to die for, an emotional heart of gold, and a fabulous climax. One of my all-time faves.
chash/ My Man Ackles
(SPN rpf x Jeeves & Wooster, Jared/Jensen, AU)
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a valet." Gloriously silly and just plain glorious. Jared and Jensen are perfectly cast in this. I reread when I need a pick-me-up.
whirligigged/ More Grace Than Heaven Ever Dreamed Of
(Merlin x Good Omens, Merlin/Arthur, AU)
Pitch-perfect fusion of Merlin and Good Omens, featuring Merlin as a demon like Crowley and Arthur as an angel like Aziraphale. Clever and deep and satisfying.
thehoyden/ High Winds in Northern Sky
(Hockey rpf x Due South, Sid/Geno, AU)
Fusion with Due South, featuring magical realism, undercover-as-married trope, and law enforcement AU trope. Just lovely. Sid's loneliness is palpable at the start of this fic. Gentle, fresh, magical story, like a snowy breath from the north. A haunting sense of wistfulness pervades this fic.

Once a King or Queen in Narnia by Zana
The Professionals x The Chronicles of Narnia; some het with background Bodie/Doyle; 6,145 words
In this fic, Susan Fisher, CI5 agent, is also Susan Pevensie, queen of Narnia. That premise may sound like it couldn't possibly work, but it really does. In this case, the contrast between the fandoms serves the themes of the story rather than being a distraction. This is my favorite crossover in Professionals fandom, and possibly any fandom.

2022 was such a wild ride for me. I have read fanfics so old that they were written in 1981 to the latest fanfics written in 2023. So I'm happy to say that I've at least encountered some crossovers among hidden gems:

The Fourth Deathly Hallow
This one is a crossover between Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes. This fic is one of the greatest fanfics I've ever read. At first I avoided this fic because to be honest, I didn't really have a good impression on crossovers at that time. But reading this fic is the best decision in my life. Among all of the HP fanfics I've ever read, this author is one of the very VERY few authors that not only rivaled Rowling in writing style, but also in mystery, in suspense, in action, and in adventure. When I first read this fic, it blew my mind, and when I reread it, it blew my mind yet again. This fic is one of the very fewest fic that made me fear for the life of the characters. In this fic, Harry, Snape, and Draco would encounter an enemy who is a genius unlike Voldemort and they would encounter real danger to their lives. Each event made me anxious on what would happen to them next but fortunately Sherlock and Watson is there to help them. And OMG! The way Sherlock and Snape, my two favorite geniuses, interact! Sherlock is also in character, a feat that it very hard to achieve, but this author managed it. And lastly, the worldbuilding THE WORLDBUILDING! The best thing about this fanfic is probably the way it expanded the world of HP that totally makes sense and it blows my mind! It's such a masterpiece, if this fic was an original fiction, it would have managed itself well against the classics of fiction.

Severus Snape and the Ghostwritten Romance
This one is HP in a Cyrano de Bergerac AU written by the one and only Cluegirl who in my opinion writes the most in-character Snape in all my experience reading HP fanfics. Although this was originally first posted in 2004, this fanfic is postwar. But since it was written only after the fifth book, some of the characters who died in canon didn't die here. But that's the best part, with no canon book to rely on this author relied on her own creativity to predict the events and making the story interesting by introducing new villains. What's more is the amazing way this author expanded the lore of magic in HP that I really love reading about in many HP fanfics. And because this fanfic is written after the fifth book, you can see that Snape is really bent on flaying Umbridge alive with his legendary tongue because he can't get over the fact that Umbridge physically harmed the students, even scarring them. I can hardly see fanfics punishing Umbridge for what she did in canon that's why this one is very satisfying since we can see a lot of amazing lines coming from Snape roasting her. What's more is that this fanfic features healer!Harry, which in my opinion should be more popular. One of the biggest themes of HP is love, especially when the reason why HP defeated Voldemort because of love not hatred, and you can see that he didn't really directly killed him. That's why I don't really like that after that, he goes on to pursue a profession in which he chases bad guys. Also I think that Harry pursuing a profession in healing fits well the theme of love more.

Wax, Glass, Venom
Another fanfic written by the amazing Cluegirl. This one is Harry and Snape in a snow white scenario. Snape is the one portrayed as snow white - although not a beauty and obviously a man - who goes to a long sleep due to being poisoned. What's amazing about this fic is how it managed it to fit the snow white scenario in Harry and Snape's case that fits it very well. I come back this fic because of its beautiful prose and in addition to that, Snape is also very in character.

Snarry in "The nutcracker and the prince" AU! This one is a beautifully drawn fanart that has a dreamy feel to it. It charmed me the first time I saw this, and I always go back to appreciate its beauty again and again.

Brighter Than Bright
Snarry in a Pride and Prejudice AU and it takes place in the 18th century. I always love stories that takes place in the 18th century. If I find one, I always almost immediately read them. But in this one, there's a bonus, it also has the Pride and Prejudice element to it and it's a/b/o so it tackles the problems in society with regards to Omega rights. And I've always loved that ever since I started reading a/b/o Death Note with L or Light making it their life goal to change everyone's view that Omegas can also do what Alphas can do. And it's a nonmagical AU plus Harry is adopted by the Weasly family, another rarity in fanfics.

Never an Obligation
A crossover between HP and Angel the series. Although sadly it is unfinished. But I went through all the work of finding this fic again because of that unforgettable feeling it gave me. This fic managed to capture the feeling like that in "The Fourth Deathly Hallow" when people from very different world meets.

Les Magiciens
This one is an HP and Les Misérables crossover. Instead of finding himself dead, Severus Snape found himself on a bridge in 19th century France, having to save yet another life. In here Harry and Snape meets Javert and Jean. This one is another very imaginative fanfic that combine two worlds to expand the lore of both. I really liked it, it's like learning more about the history of Hogwarts.

It's not really explicitly stated in this fic but this one is HP in an Alladin AU. Although not too much but Harry here is a genie. And it very creative in using that as a plot to solve the many of the remaining issues here in HP. Plus it's written by Dementordelta, who made me fall in love with teen!Snape.

Starling
In this one, it's also not explicitly stated but it has a similarity to Tarzan, so it's safe to consider it a HP in a Tarzan AU. This one is a modern day masterpiece, it plays with the what if scenarios. What if because of the abuse Harry received from the Dursleys, he ran away as a child? What if Voldemort wasn't killed when Harry is 17 and lived on till he's 30? What if HP is not a novel intended for children and took a much more realistic approach with regards to Harry's abuse? This fic is abuse written well and not as unrealistic as those abuse HP fanfics out there, and yet much more heartbreaking. Another thing that is great about this story is its amazing plot, the smooth flow of stories and the beleavable characterizations. And like what the other commentor said, in here, Snape, Harry, and Minerva are masterpieces of humanity, survivors in their own way. And I also love the characterization of Dumbledore here, not a bad person like he is portrayed in Dumbledore bashings, but not too good either. The summarry: twenty-five years Harry's disappearance, Snape gets the same assignment from different masters: find and deliver the Boy Who Lived. But like I said this one is like Tarzan, when Snape finally found him, the Harry he finds is a feral/wild man that doesn't know how to speak.

    Happy reading! One of the reason why I was late in the reccing was because I tried rereading them to test if they are as amazing as I remember them to be and got distracted because they ARE as amazing I remember them to be especially "Brighter than Bright". I literally forgot that one of the reasons why I love it is because it is really similar to Rowling's writing style along with "Severus Snape and the Ghostwritten Romance".

Crossovers and fusions are many of my favorites, but I was trying to pick one to rec that was something uncommon (unlike, say, "Harry Potter gets different parents", or of course "Sentinels and Guides are known, and here's a match plucked from two unconnected fandoms", both of which... I have too many bookmarks of, excellent to indifferent).
The one I decided to go with is Exactly Like You by Jerakeen, a Teen Wolf Sterek Pride and Prejudice fusion with ABO elements to give some appropriately fixed societal expectations. I approached it dubiously, like you probably are now, but it's brilliantly conceived and plotted, funny and sweet.

if you ever did believe (Ted Lasso/Practical Magic fusion) Rebecca is a witch cursed to either die of a broken heart or become consumed with bitterness. After Rupert betrays her, she's leaning towards bitterness... but a spell cast in her youth may come back to change all that. Lots of interesting departures from the Practical Magic plot specifics while still capturing the magical feel. Also, even funnier since Hannah Waddingham has played a witch more than once. Also Ted/Rebecca centric, which is just adorable.
The Schneiders of Stars Hollow (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel/Gilmore Girls) "Jess is tasked with taking a delivery order to 36 Maple, where a nice old couple from New York spend a few months out of the year. It turns out that the Schneiders are...not quite who Jess thinks they are." (Or: Lenny Bruce marries Midge instead of dying of an overdose in the 60s. Marital bliss and a name change ensues). I just love this idea so much. I'm not even much of a Midge/Lenny shipper, but the idea of them as an old couple wintering in Stars Hollow and snarking at the goings-on is just too good. Also highly recommend checking out the author's tumblr, she sometimes posts drabble fics in this universe and they are, in a word, marvelous!
Bright (Agents of Shield/Stardust fusion) Fitzsimmons as Yvaine and Tristan respectively are so cute, while also flipping gender roles for fun. I'm just happy to see the Stardust film referenced, even if it has to be in the form of fusions like this. Also features Steggy as Jemma's parents, which *yes*.
Harry Potter: The Legends Reborn (Harry Potter/BBC Merlin) What if Harry and Draco were the reincarnations of Merlin and Arthur? How do sworn enemies reconcile with their pasts as close friends? How does Harry reconcile his incredible abilities as Merlin while trying to hide out as a typical (if famous) Hogwarts student? Features some surprising reincarnations and fascinating character parallels. Only drawback is the author is more familiar with the movies than the books in a few places, but overall good stuff. (note: platonic Merthur/Drarry, not shipping)
Guardian Tadashi AU (Lighting Candles and A Friend in the Dark) (Rise of the Guardians/Big Hero 6) Gets a little angsty at times, what with Tadashi dealing with existential crisis after existential crisis now that he's a magical spirit whose brother can't see him, but overall hopeful and beautiful. Really fleshes out Tadashi as his own chaarcter beyond the saintly older brother, and the banter and imagery are pretty amazing.
Don't be shocked when your hist'ry book mentions me (Sleepy Hollow(TV)/Hamilton) Alexander Hamilton wakes up in modern day Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod and Abbie are there to help. I just think it's neat. Also, yes, at some point Hamilton sees the musical about him, and corresponds with his biographer. And yes, the Schuyler sisters are witches, just to make it that much better (though they are still dead while Hamilton isn't)
In a pub, briefly (Outlander/Captain America MCU) I just love the idea of Peggy Carter and Claire as friends during World War II. Sue me.
Henry Tilney and Mr. Norrell (Northanger Abbey/Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell) Henry Tilney is the second magician in England, but his magics are more based in his mothers homemaking spells than anything big and flashy, so it's lovingly feminist in its way. Also, Catherine is just so into it.I really wish the author had gone a bit farther with this one, but what's there is quite lovely.
My Heart Don't Wish to Roam> (Captain America/Merlin/Doctor Who) This series of Steggy AU one-shots includes a couple of different fusion ideas, which I enjoy.

My thoughts: The dynamic between the Doctor and Merlin is really interesting here, but I thought the fic really shined with its portrayals of Donna and Arthur. I loved seeing how their skills and problem-solving abilities got to be put to use here. There are also some interesting notes on Merlin's immortality, his relationship with magic in a wider universe than just Earth, and his relationship with time given his canon powers of slowing time.

Most of the crossovers I've read are from ffnet because that's where I started reading fanfiction, but here's one from ao3:
Haikyuu at Hogwarts series by Killthespare: Technically a fusion, not a crossover, as there are only Haikyuu!! characters (and original characters) involved. The series follows the general plot of the HP books, but not always in the ways you would expect. The author does an amazing job of integrating the HQ characters into the world, making them feel in character despite having no ties to the HQ universe. It spans the entire HP series (in progress; currently in the fifth book), with lots of little nods to both sets of canon and tons of foreshadowing.
Now for my ffnet recs:
Elemental Flux by Blu Taiger: Avatar the Last Airbender/Calvin and Hobbes, where Susie and Calvin (now teens) and Hobbes are transported to the world of ATLA during season 3.
The Bane of Poseidon by AdamantlyAmiable: PJO/HP, one of the first fanfics I ever read. The 7 demigods and Nico go to Hogwarts as fifth years right after the end of HoO (they just can't catch a break lol). It's unfinished, but still definitely worth the read.
Beo Caldez by EmPro8: PJO/Gravity Falls where Leo gets tricked by Bill Cipher into becoming his puppet, and the demigods have to fight to protect the Argo II. It's a lot more whumpy than I usually read, but fun and action-packed.
Entwined by scripturia: A Tangled/ATLA fusion with Zuko and Katara, but it doesn't just directly follow the plot of the movie (for example, Hama keeps Katara for her bending, not her hair). I don't really ship Zutara, but it's still a wonderful story.
Masters of the New World by KingOfTheRock: Death Note/ATLA crackfic oneshot with Azula and Light Yagami. It's...yeah it's just crack lol I love it
Press Y to Eject An Impostor by DragonMaster65: Also crack, Untitled Goose Game and Among Us. Typical goose shenanigans, basically.

The series eventually goes on to seamlessly crossover with The Magnus Archives as Lyfrassir and Nastya find themselves on Earth, and Lyf just cannot resist helping the people (and raccoon) they find.
