Time flies! We’re already celebrating the tenth anniversary of International Fanworks Day (IFD) here at the Organization for Transformative Works.

Every February 15th, on the day when, ten years ago, AO3 celebrated its millionth published fanwork, fandom gathers to celebrate IFD and fanworks in all their forms—fics, art, vids, zines, meta, and more—and their importance in and across fannish communities all over the world.

We would love to hear about your experience in fandom—as a fan, as a creator, as a member of the community. The running theme for this IFD is 10: give us your ten things that mean the most to you about fandom; share with us a highlight about the past ten years you've spent in fandom; or, if you're feeling nostalgic, tell us about ten funny, exciting or noteworthy moments that happened in your fandoms.

We are going to keep an eye out for the stories shared by fans, so tag your posts with #IFD2024 and we'll signal boost those stories on the OTW News social media accounts.

In a few weeks we'll be announcing what the OTW is doing to celebrate IFD 2024. But we also want to know what you and your fandom communities will be doing to celebrate the 10th year of this event! Back in December we asked you what your community was planning for this IFD: we'll collect information and links to those events until January 28. We'll then promote those events to our readership on both our website and socials along with our own event schedule, so make sure to share your celebrations!

We are really happy to share this milestone with you, and can't wait to know what you're doing to celebrate. We look forward to reading about what fandom and fanworks have meant to you!

Couldn’t leave it to just 10 for why I love fandoms 🥰
1. Friendship, I’ve met many wonderful friends.
2. Renewal of love of a series (Yay more content!)
3. Engaging with all kinds of fans about theories!
4. Easy to get into, whether it be art, writing, or cosplay there’s so many ways to have fun with those in similar fandoms!
5. Pretty fanart everywhere!
6. All the fics of course!
7. Love for rarepairs,it’s not always about the main ships!
8. Enormous amounts of dedication fans have to them!
9. Ships, who doesn’t love some pairings x3
10. The inside jokes! KH fandom has some good ones!
11. I love how excited KH fandom gets about anything!
12. New content always around with creatives!
13. Exciting to just be a part of to begin with ^^

      Comments asking AO3 to better enable volunteers to stay safe, which is a good idea and actually under AO3's control, would make sense.
      Supporting orgs that are in Palestine right now or directly lobbying people with influence on government policy makes sense.
      Posting one-line slogans in unrelated posts on an unrelated site for a month, then acting like the only reason anyone would find this annoying is that they support violent zionism, is goofy.

    I'm just here with my popcorn watching the chaos, hoping this place really does take measures to stop the site and organization from being used as a soap box for unrelated agendas, as it previously has been. i hope the new comment moderation policy that is being worked on reflects the founding tenets of the fanfiction hosting website. i hope you will remember that being "apolitical" ultimately means siding with oppression. good job avoiding mission drift so far.
i hope volunteers (and the rest of us!) have done or will do a little research into the nonprofit industrial complex. "The Revolution Will Not Be Funded" is incredibly easy to find a pdf of... (i followed a link from a teenvogue article which i found after searching "nonprofit industrial complex" in duckduckgo.)

  Well said! As someone who has volunteered on the community level for a 6000 member convention, this was the sort of thing we were all active in. I also study this sort of philosophy and theory for community support at my university and there is such a wealth of information on how important it is to have a proper and well-balanced stance on political events when they affect your organization and community.

Ohh happy tenth anniversary!! I still remember how into the site and its tagging system I was when I first started using it back in 2016. I've spent so much of my time here since them and some fics even served as a stellar distraction during my period of grief and mourning.
Which is why I love this site a lot and it breaks my heart to know one of the mods is actively suppressing the people showing support to Palestine and keeps getting away with it.

These things aren’t unrelated as it pertains to the OTW. Even just mentioning if all volunteers will from now on will be treated fairly was frozen :c
Wanting accountability, just please, make a news post. Doesn’t need to be specifics for volunteers safety. Can be similar to the email replies and comments of their neutral stance. That doesn’t affect non-profit as they’ve made those comments already, right? Not everyone is going to read the comments, not everyone is going to see the private email responses. A news post makes everyone on the same level.
By not even having a simple news post, it does seem like a specific stance they want to go with. It comes across as disingenuous like it’s something they need to hide and skirt under the rug as if it never happened. That they don’t want the masses to find out. That is the issue and worry I have. It makes me concerned if there are other things that they’d hide, which just makes things more untrustworthy. A little trust goes a long way!
This place should be a fun fandom space, but I’m feeling so little trust nowadays from it :/

  As much as it would be nice to have, there will never be a news post. I only wish someday some brave volunteer will expose just how evil and messy the OTW can be behind the scenes. Sadly, most of the volunteers are tight knit with each other, so it ends up being something like a police union; ultimately, they will protect one another.
  Truth, neutrality, acceptance and freedom of speech are not values the OTW has. They can play their games with the copy/paste email and comment responses, but behind the scenes, they are doing damage control and making fun of everyone who dares to disagree.

    I mean, ex-volunteers like myself have been coming out about how evil and messy it is behind the scenes for ages now. Unfortunately, you're entirely correct about current volunteers being too tight-knit—criticism of AO3 is treated as laughable on Slack and I'll admit even I bought into that for a time.
    But it's been made very clear by myself, Dhobi ki Kutti, and other ex-volunteers that the culture inside the OTW is rotten, toxic, and racist to the core. At this point it's just a matter of figuring out what to do with that information when the OTW themselves refuses to acknowledge it.

  as far as im aware theres no forum so i think maybe its fine lol.
  i know a lot of users think this isnt the place, but essentially everywhere is the place. in real life, we see graffiti, pins and patches, flags (!), and stickers. ive ended conversations with strangers in real life by saying "Free Palestine" and "Black Lives Matter".
  we're just people who share a hobby. its okay to say what we believe in and its okay to be called out for our beliefs.

This is a dead site walking. The moderation on the comments are terrible.
Most of all it these comments have nothing to do with the news-post. ANY AND EVERY SINGLE COMMENT, that has nothing to do with the post should be deleted. (Not frozen) To truly be non-biased would be deleting any and every political comment that shows up.
There’s something seriously wrong with SOME you people (site mods and commenters ). When someone says they don’t agree with something (doesn't mean they want anything to do with the otherside — some people just want to stay out of it and LOSE THEMSELVES IN A FANFICTION ON A FANFICTION WEBSITE.
If you want to do anything with politics. Then go and scream at a politician. Not harass people trying to read fanfiction.
(If anyone gets feisty with me, I will block you. This is a statement, not an argument.)
