Chapter 8: Wrapping up the Story

Summary:

A summary of the rest of the story. (The life of the Kirishima household in bullet points.)

Notes:

Hi guys! I have a lot to apologize for but I don't even know where to begin. Sorry for ghosting you for 2 years. Sorry for promising that I would finish. Sorry for not replying to comments and just being silent. The truth is... I fell out of love with my hero academia and the fandom so it has been extremely difficult to continue this and every other kiribaku story I had started. I had been holding off on doing this because I was trying to finish the story and had been putting it off. I kept telling myself that I would start it in the summer, or do it when I was finished with something else. I told myself lie after lie because I didn't it to end like this. This story is so special to my heart, the life of these characters is grand and full of detail in my head, but no matter what I do, I just can't bring myself to write it. I wrote the beginning of this "chapter" two years ago and you can see the exact moment where I just stopped. I thought it was just writer's block for the longest time, but I am currently writing an aokaga story with another alias with no difficulty. Which is why I finally accepted it and decided not to put it off anymore. And I will never feel like I have apologized for enough.

I mentioned how I had all these details planned, and I did when I first started writing it and that is what I posted, in some hopes it would serve as closure for you guys and for me. I tried my best to fill in any detail I can think of but if I missed something or you want to know something you can leave me a question in the comments and I will try my absolute best to answer it.

I can't thank you enough for liking this story and continuing to support it after all this time. It truly means a lot. Kiribaku will always be dear to my heart but unfortunately, they don't inspire me like they used to.

If I ever feel inspired I will write it out but for the time being (and for the foreseeable future), this is the best that I can do... I am once again so so sorry.

Writing these stories has been amazing and I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart,

Much love,
Gabs

Chapter Text

The rest of the festival

  • The day of the festival was upon them. The Kirishima's left their home earlier than usual to set everything up, that process took a couple of hours. Dadshima knew that they had to finish as quickly as possible so they would get to enjoy the festivities. Eijirou noticed that his son wasn't wearing his headphones like he usually would. He took this as a sign that Kai was open to some small talk on the way there.
  • "Kai?"
  • "Yeah."
  • "Are you excited about the festival?"
  • "I guess," he shrugged but Eijirou noticed he was trying to hold back a smile.
  • "Which event are you looking forward to the most? Besides ours of course," he added, mostly because he didn't want to give Kai the option to NOT say theirs.
  • "I don't really care," the son said trying to sound nonchalant.
  • "Not even the food ones? I hear the only accepted local/homecooked stands, nothing corporate."
  • "Food sounds good."
  • This talk was not going the way Eiijoru hoped.
  • "There is supposed to be some band or something, I hope they don't suck," Kai added after a while. It made Eijirou smile. There was something that Reyes and Kai bonded over; music. Music was how those two would communicate with each other. The house was never quiet because his house was always playing some type of music. As Kai was growing up he would interrupt them or boldly request music. Sometimes if Reyes didn't like his song of choice they would get a different device and play both songs at the same time. Often time they didn't match so it just sounded like a huge mess, but Eijirou never complained because both his spouse and his son would have the brightest smiles when that happened.
  • Kai started using headphones when they heard Reyes' diagnosis. The music at the festival would be the first time they would listen to something together in a little more than a year. Dadshima stopped asking questions he didn't want to say something that could bring the mood down, or that would make Kai put on his headphones.
  • Dadshima was going to explain wrestling by thinking of it. (I do not know enough about wrestling to do this.) After he was done setting up his ring ( with the kelp of Kai) he was going to look around to see what the kids had planned.  sometime before their set, they are one of the last to perform so they go around and look at what the kids planned.
  • There are food stands they stop by the soba one which Shoto decided to chaperon he asks Kiri questions about his plumbing and the friend he sent to help. (The friend is Inasa and it was a setup, a poor attempt of his to be wingman.)
  • There is a stage some girls are doing a concert he sees Kai won't take his eyes off the stage and wonders if he wants to sing or something. (Kai is interested in playing the drums he has always liked them and his favorite songs have drum solos.)
  • There is a maze made of desks that looks dangerous but apparently, Baku is supervising so nothing should fall down, he also calculated it to make sure it was perfect he and kai decide to skip it, Kiri notices how upset Baku looked by that (but during this time in the story Dadshima needs everything but romance.)
  • The chaperon to their wrestling bit is actually Mr. Midoriya bc he is engaged to tentcole (Shoji) when Kiri told him (Kai) that Mr. Midoriya was the assigned teacher his eyes lit up, he hopes to become friends with the man he could use the ally when Kai starts transitioning (if that is what he wants to do). Kai on the other hand wants him to be his father's husband but that will never happen.
  • Dadshima and Kai played a few festival games, like throwing darts and stuff.
  • He noticed how most students are with friends and Kai is with him. Dadshima wants to ask him if he has friends he would rather do stuff with and Kai gets stiff. He doesn't answer but Kirishima thinks of Kota and Eri?
  • They go find them they are a stand Kotas family is a circus act called the Wild Wild Pussy cats. Kota is just standing there awkwardly just being emo in the corner. Kiri makes it as if he has to go set up something else so he can spend time with his friend and that is where he sees Aizawa from his widow support group with Eri.
  • They find out Aizawa is her “temporary” guardian but the way Kiri sees how Aizawa acts around here he thinks it's good he's not alone anymore.
  • He leaves Kai with Eri and Kota and now that he knows who the guardians are he makes a note to set up a hang-outs for Kai because he should spend time with people his age. He knows Aizawa knows about him being trans so there would be absolutely no issue with getting that family to respect him. He also found out that Kotas uncle also is trans, so it would be great for Kai to get to know him.
  • He does have a little bit more time before he has to leave so he wanders the festival a bit longer and sees Jirou, Momo's niece asked her to play so they got the old band together. And that is the band that they hear in the background. The band members are Jirou, Momoi, his teammate Tokayami, and Denki (Kiri makes a mental note to ask his friend why he didn't tell him he was going to play in Kai's festival) Bakugou is also a member. He didn't have time to stay for their full set but he had to admit that all of them were amazing (including Bakugou).
  • He gets dressed in his wrestling gear and takes the stage.
  • Kai had fun with his friends, he wanted to go see the band that was playing but both Kota and Eri were busy with games, Kai could hear the band from where he was, and they were pretty good. Whoever was playing the drums was amazing.
  • They follow him to go see his dad's set.
  • The wrestlers were showing examples of easy moves. While his dad was wrestling with a doll-like in this video and the whole crowd was cheering him on.
  • Kai hadn't thought about this in a while but up there his dad looked like a hero.
  • After that set was done, his dad ruins it all by getting on stage (they called up any parents to do a talent show of sorts) and singing one of those old-time "manly songs" that Kai hated. He was so embarrassed after he had just told everyone that the wrestler was his dad.
  • After the festival as they are packing up the car and getting ready to go home, Dadshima gets a call from his neighbor telling him to hurry home, it was an emergency.
  • Once he got home he saw that his neighbor was freaking out about his how was flooding.
  • After many phone calls, while Eijirou is on the cusp of a panic attack, Uraraka (the principal) called and told him the school had a program where families could stay with a teacher temporarily in case of an emergency, and asked if that was something he was interested in. Having not that many options he expected and was told the address. He wasn't allowed in there until the house had been expected and the damages fixed, that just increases his stress. Once he arrived and knocked on the door he discovered that that big house belonged to no one other than Bakugou Katsuki.

Temporarily living with Bakugou

  • It was extremely awkward
  • Bakugou was not used to his house being this noisy, or sharing, or sharing with a kid so it caused a lot of issues (that he internalized because he was a gentleman above all else). Instead of yelling at them and blowing off steam at his house, we went on runs or to the gym so it wouldn't stay bottled in.
  • Kai hates it there until he finds a drumset, and Bakugou reveals that he is the one that played at the festival. After a lot of deliberation, Kai asks Bakugou to teach him how to play the drums and while Bakugou is a math teacher he hates teaching anything else, but he eventually agrees. The two of them bond. Kai stops hating him. Bakugou still just sees him as a C- student but a C- a student that he cares for a lot. He tries to get to know his crush (Kiri) but is starting to think he might have to give up on that seeing as how the object of his affection is ignoring him.
  • Kirishima becomes more cold and distant because that teacher he had the hots for was the last person he wanted to see. He is also in turmoil because he NEEDS his house to get fixed as soon as possible. That is where he spent his life with his spouse, that is their home. There are a lot of things that belonged to him that belonged to THEM that must be in good condition.
  • Kirishima knows that he must not go back to the house until they clear it but he finds himself driving by there every night worrying about it.
  • One night he is unresponsive at dinner and Bakugou has enough that he yells at Kirishima to follow him. He leads him to his car and drives them to Kirishima's house. He doesn't say anything and they wait in silence until all of the workers that were in there left. Then Bakugou pulls out a mask and hard hat from his back seat and gives it to Kirishima and tells him to go in there and grab whatever it is that is worrying him but that he can only make one trip. Kirishima looks at him confused, he had no idea how Bakugou knew what he wanted and Bakiugou doesn't explain it just tells him to hurry up.
  • Kirishima runs into the house and tries to ignore the walls stripped to their core. He goes into his room and grabs the airlocked bag of Reyes's belongings, he is pleased that they are intact. He goes to his desk and grabs a few more things including the letter Reyes sent him. He goes into Kai's room and does the same, he knew Kai would've wanted his bookbag, a few clothes, and the letter his mom gave him that he had yet to open. There are about a billion more things he would like to get but he knew Bakugou was probably serious about only waiting for one trip. Kirishima tries to ignore the condition that his house is in, they still hadn't reported anything but he hoped they would get back to him soon and that it wouldn't be considered a total loss.
  • Once he returns he feels a lot better, Bakugou doesn't say anything but Kirishima can tell that he is curious about the items he retrieved. Kirishima tells him it is the last thing he has of his spouse. Bakugou just nods and starts driving home, Kirishima thanks him.
  • Sero offers them their home but Kirishima declines, Bakugou is not that bad of a guy or cook and Kai seems really happy with the drum.
  • A few months go by, he was able to get the rest of his stuff and they start fixing his house. Kiri had been under the impression that his insurance would only cover a part of it but he never received a bill.
  • Bakugou didn't have proof that Todoroki was behind it (but he had his suspicions) so he made the idiot pay for it. He lets Shoto know that if he had evidence he would be behind bars and Shoto believes him so he doesn't fight any and all charges that Bakugou forwards him.
  • During this time the two adults get to know each other little by little and become somewhat friends.
  • Once Kirishima moves back into his house they keep in touch by sending each other the occasional message. Bakugou realized that both father and son were still grieving Reyes and he doesn't know what to do about his feelings that just grew deeper during this time. He thinks he should just ignore them and be friends but when he goes to do that Kiri shows interest.

Kirishima's Pro Wrestling Match

  • After he moved Kirishima invites him to see a wrestling match. Kai overhears and invites his tutor, Mr. Todoroki, who had been acting weirder than usual around his father.
  • In the end Bakugou, Camie, Inasa and Todorki go to the match.
  • Bakugou can't keep his eyes off Kirishima. Kiri is a beast and so badass when he noticed the familiar faces in the audience he winks and Bakugou loses it.
  • They got invited backstage after the match by Kai.
  • Todoroki went missing and he told Bakugou to go find him so he does but he finds Kirishima in the locker room instead. He tells him he was amazing and they can't keep their eyes off of each other, the tension in the room is charged with emotions. Kirishima makes a comment that he was about to lose but saw him in the audience and pulled the win out of his ass.
  • Bakugou gets closer to him, and thanks him for inviting him. They subconsciously get closer to each other until they kiss like there is no tomorrow.
  • They break apart and just as Bakugou is about to lean in for another kiss, Kirishima panics, and whispers that it is too soon, and leaves.

Deku's Awkward wedding

  • Midoriya's wedding is a few weeks after the kiss and both Bakugou and Kirishima attend. They don't really interact much during the beginning because Kirishima is just a guest and Bakugou is in the bridal party. But during dinner, Bakugou was seated at the same table as him and it is very awkward. Kirishima wants to say something but doesn't know what to say. He can't deny that he had started to have feelings for the blonde man but he is not in a position where he can act on them. Bakugou asks him to talk and Kirishima is mentally preparing himself to reject him but Bakugou tells him that the kiss was a mistake. That it was obvious to him that they were both attracted to each other but it was even more apparent that Kirishima was in no position to date. He tells him that he is not one to wait for anyone, his pride wouldn't allow it, but in the future, if Kirishima was interested and he was still available that he would think about it. Kiri is left bamboozled because somehow he was the one that got rejected. Kirishima agrees and asks if they can still be friends. Bakugou looks hurt and says that it is best if they just maintain a professional relationship. And he agrees.

Kai's inner turmoil

    • these events happen sometime towards the end of the story
  • A chapter where Kai, Kota, and Eri hang out and talk about their parents. Kai finds out that both of his friends have lost at least one of their parents. So if anyone knows how he feels it's them. They understand what he has been going through and the three of them agree to talk to each other anytime they need to and they become closer because of that.
  • When Kai goes back home he finally opens Reyes's letter.  It says that they knew that it would take him some time to read it and that is okay to take time to process his feelings, but that he couldn't keep them bottled up. They also wrote something about the best way he can honor their memory is by being himself, truly himself, and that they knew that his father would find a way to give him anything he asked for. They end the letter by saying that if there is someone out there that his father likes that Kai should encourage it, all they wanted is his and his father's happiness. Wrapped up in the letter was a key. He recognized it as the keep to the music box.
  • He goes to Abuela's house to play it. He puts it in the key and a familiar melody starts playing. It is a song this his mom used to hum to him before bed and he starts sobbing. His Abuela shortly joins and they both cry and hug each other until there are no more tears left.
  • Kai cuts his hair and talks to Kiri about puberty blockers. Kirishima wants to help him but wants to make sure that he wants to do is safe, he wants to do research but he's unsure where to start. He requests a meeting with Midiriya as he is the only transman he knows. Mr. Midoriya is happy to help and recommends a few books but also mentions that he should ask Bakugou because when he was transitioning, somehow Bakugou found the most useful stuff. Kirishima messages Bakugou for the first time in months, Bakugou doesn't reply and Kirishima thinks that he ignored him. However, a few days later, he is sent links to websites, titles of books, and a list of trans medical specialists in the area. Kirishima thanks him. He wanted to invite him to lunch as a thank you but decides not to.
  • Once Kiri is more informed he tells Kai what he found and they both sit together and decide what to do.
    • the following bullet points deal with trans issues as well as mentioned or implied transphobia and bullying
  • After Kai cut his hair, he buys more loose-fitting clothing and meets with a trans group that walks him through things he can do that could be gender-affirming. During this time he was still going to the "female" bathroom since that is what he always used. There were some anonymous complaints and he was told by students and an (ignorant) teacher that if he was going to "choose" to be a boy he had to use the "men's" room.
  • In the boy's room, Kai starts getting bullied. He was already bullied by the girls but they mostly talked behind his back and said mean things to him. Some of the guys were starting to get physical.
  • There was no gender-neutral bathroom he could go to. He knew he had to tell his dad, but he knew there was nothing he could do about it and Kai didn't want to transfer schools. Mr. Bakugou goes up to him and asks him what has been going on. Kai denies it but Bakugou isn't having it and tells him he doesn't believe it. Mr. Bakugou looks just nods and asks him the name of the students and the teacher. After Kai tells him Bakugou gives him a key, tells him it is for a faulty bathroom that he can use, and if anyone says he can't be there to talk to him directly. Kai thanks him and sees him leave, looking angrier than the day he had to break into the classroom.
  • Bakugou immediately calls Kirishima and tells him he has to get to the school asap. When Kiri asks what's wrong he tells him Kai is being bullied and that he will meet him at the principal's office.
  • Midoriya is already in there talking to Uraraka about something so he tells them both and they are both pissed. Uraraka sends an email to the faculty to remind them of their zero-tolerance policy in regard to bullying and the school's no discrimination policy. She makes plans to suspend those students for as long as possible.
  • Kirishima arrives and is filled in on what is happening and what actions were taken but it doesn't feel like that's enough.
  • How long can Kai use a factuality bathroom? What is to stop it from happening again?  What can not just this school, but the whole district do to prevent it?
  • Uraka talked to the district and they try to brush it off, but the teachers already knew this was going to happen so they organized a strike, no teacher was going to work until something was done. Midoriya had his ways of stopping the teachers that didn't care from being able to go in due to "emergencies." Bakugou was also doing all he could to get all of the schools in the district to join and he got Todoroki to unionize the subs to stop them from filling in for the teachers.
  • The district had no choice but to explicitly protect lgbtgia+ students in their handbooks, open gender-neutral bathrooms for the students to use, and raise the wages to get them to return.
  • It still didn't feel like enough but it was a start.
  • Kai and Kirishima were grateful for all of the things the teachers had done, and while everything still wasn't perfect after that, it was a start.

Ending

  • Kai manages to stay in that school and graduates from that school district with no incidents.
  • Bakugou and Kirishima stayed friends after the incident and got closer over time. They even start dating when Kai started high school and get married after his graduation. Bakugou did indeed wait for Kirishima and would've waited as long as he needed because he was smitten from the first second he met him. When they moved in together, Kirishima left behind the last of Reyes's things because he thought he needed to move on. He was surprised to find them in the closet of their joint room. He question Bakugou and called him an idiot for leaving something so important behind. Kirishima swore he fell in love with him all over again. The three of them lived together happily, sure there were some problems here and there but nothing they couldn't work past. Bakguou always made sure to make some excuse to leave on the anniversary of Reyes's death because he knew how important it was to the both of them. But after the second year they were together Kai invited him to stay, saying it was just dumb for him to leave and that Reyes wouldn't mind if he was there. That year Abuela gave him a letter that Reyes had left behind for "Ejirou's future partner" he cried a lot and refused to tell anyone the contents.  After that, the three of them spent every year remembering them together.
  • When he was in college Kai would often call Bakugou about problems because all his father did was worry while Bakugou would be supportive and give sound advice.
  • He was having issues with a girlfriend at the time so he had called Bakugou to vent. His girlfriend knew that Kai was trans and supported him but never really mentioned it. She had said something negative about one of her classmates because she was a transwoman. She kept misgendering her and calling her a man and when Kai defended her it caused a huge fight, so that is why he had called him.
  • After listening Bakugou was blunt and said, "Why would you want to stay with a good-for-nothing terf?"
  • Kai laughed at his ability to make everything sound so simple but agreed with him. He told him he was right and he wouldn't be with her much longer. As he was ending the call he almost calls him "dad" but stops himself. Baku picks up on it and ends the call with, "yeah anytime son."

The End

Notes:

I want all lgbtgia+ people to know that you are loved and accepted here. I know that things are especially hard for trans youth. I wish I had gotten to write the ending in more detail but that is exactly how anyone should react when anything happens to any student. I know that is not the case and it saddens me. I love you all with all my heart and wish nothing but the best for you.
