Chapter Text
"You're doing it wrong," Enna interrupted for the fifth time, wresting the spatula away from Pomu. "It's like this."
And Pomu watched her spread the frosting over the cake in the exact same way she had been doing before. She said as much, in a monotone and clearly irritated tone.
"No, no," Enna insisted. "You're doing it unevenly."
"It's faster!" Pomu threw her hands up in the air. "This is for later, and Petra's going to be here in-"
The front door opened. Pomu and Enna stared at each other, mouthing curses at each other even as they moved in front of the cake to hide it with their bodies.
"Hi," Petra said, clearly tired as she put her bag on the table with a thunk. She sat down and immediately dropped her head, pressing her forehead to the cool tabletop with a groan.
"Hey," Enna gripped Pomu's wrist and squeezed as she spoke, a call to go and figure out a way to cheer Petra up. "Bad day?"
Petra just grunted.
"Happy birthday?" Pomu said, almost questioningly.
Petra looked up from her moping spot on the table, frowning slightly. "My birthday's tomorrow."
"Well you were in the womb or whatever," Pomu waved Petra off, turning and picking up the cake. She set it on the table carefully, even as she viciously stepped on Enna's foot to get her to grab the candles. "That counts."
"Please don't mention wombs on my fake birthday," Petra begged, but the veil of tiredness lifted for a moment as she smiled.
The frosting was a pretty pink, and Petra immediately reached out to scoop a dollop of it onto her finger, tasting it. "It's good!" She said, sounding surprised.
"A rave review!" Enna deadpanned, sticking the only candle she could find into the center of the cake and lighting it. "Thanks babe." Petra tasted like strawberries when she kissed her, and Enna tried desperately not to smile, because tenderness was still not her thing yet.
"This wish won't count though," Petra leaned forward, preparing to blow out the candle.
"Think of it as insurance," Pomu shrugged. "You never know."
"Ask for Pomu to learn how to bake," Enna said, disgruntled. She turned to the fairy. "You didn't put enough strawberries in the frosting."
"Well I'm sorry," Pomu crossed her arms. "I was trying to get you to not dump a fucking cup of salt into the batter."
"Because you were distracting me with the nightmare that you call 'stirring'," Enna even put airquotes around it. "You weren't folding the batter right-"
And just like that they were fighting. Petra watched them argue with a fond smile, before taking another dollop of frosting and smearing it on Enna's face. Enna turned and stared at her. Petra grinned, hands cupping her angel's face, leaning in and kissing her.
It was quick and gentle, and Enna pulled Petra in with hands on her hips and let her lean on her, because Petra looked like she was a second away from falling over from tiredness.
"Thank you," Petra said sleepily into the crook of Enna's neck, reaching out to pull Pomu in with her belt loops, to kiss her sweetly as well. "Thank you."
"Yeah well," Enna held Petra a bit tighter even as she blustered. "I'm getting the first slice 'cause I made this."
"I fucking helped you!" Pomu slapped her forehead in exasperation, even as her shoulders shook with faint laughter and her hand slid onto Petra's warm hip. "I found the recipe too."
"You should have called dibs first, bitch," Enna smirked, getting into Pomu's space easily, hands on her neck like she was about to kiss her. Pomu snapped at her fingers and swore at her.
Petra smiled, watching them bicker, and cut all of them a slice.
