Chapter Text
September 1946
Jimmy stretched and groaned softly, his body protesting at the sudden movement. He had been hunched over at his desk all afternoon, studying hard. Classes had just started up again, and Jimmy was determined not to fall behind. Despite the band’s success, he was still chasing his dream of getting a law degree. Nothing could distract him from that.
A knock sounded at his front door, and Jimmy sighed in exasperation. He debated just ignoring it, but when whoever it was knocked again he figured he’d better do the polite thing and answer it.
To Jimmy’s surprise, Johnny was standing on the other side of the door. He was carrying a small paper bag in his arms, his usual easy grin lighting up his features.
“Johnny?” Jimmy frowned slightly. “What are you doing here?” They usually didn’t see each other one-on-one like this, the other guys were always there. Hell, Jimmy wasn’t even sure how Johnny knew where he lived.
Johnny held up the paper bag. “I brought you something to eat.” He said it as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“Well… thanks. Um, here come inside.” Jimmy stepped aside and let Johnny enter, closing the door behind him.
“Where should I put this?” Johnny asked, looking around at the small but relatively neat apartment (though it was nowhere near as neat as Wayne and Nick’s place).
“On the table there is fine,” Jimmy responded. He was still bewildered. “Johnny, I’m glad you’re here and all, but… why did you come?”
“Julia said she hadn’t seen you since the gig we played two nights ago,” Johnny explained. “And usually that means you’re studying. And usually when people study they want food. So I brought you some.” Johnny listed these things off in an almost robotic tone of voice as if he had memorized some of the band member’s social cues over the months they had known each other. Come to think of it, he probably had. At least as well as he could.
“Oh. That… that makes sense.” Jimmy smiled softly at Johnny. Then he turned and walked into his kitchen. “Come on, I’ll get us some plates. We can eat together.”
