Vanity and Rot

Chapter 2: Living is Not Optional

Summary:

This is an optional chapter. If you want to have Stolas die then don't read this. If you want some closure and a not-dead Stolas go ahead.

Chapter Text

Blitz checked his phone for the umpteenth time but it was still jarringly empty.

He wasn’t worried. Why in hell would he be worried? If anything he was happy that his phone wasn’t blowing up with the usual porno texts from Stolas.

He only looked at  all   some  of them anyway before deleting them.

He checked his phone again.

“Are you waiting for something sir?”

“No!” Blitz yelled defensively. “Why would you ask something so stupid?”

Moxxie looked at him like he was dumb. “Because, Sir, you’ve been checking your phone compulsively all day. At the office, during a meeting with a client, on the job , and now. It must be at least 30 times now.”

Blitz glared at him. “You don’t have anything better to do than watch me all day huh Mox.”

Moxxie spluttered. “No! That is not- why- inappropriate.”

Millie laid a hand on her husband's shoulder comfortingly. “We’re just worried, Blitz.”

“Well don’t be! I’m fine.” With that pronouncement he stalked into his office, slamming the door.

He slumped in his chair. A voice in his head constantly nagged him to go.

But everything was probably fine. Stolas was taking a very long nap, because heaven knows he doesn’t sleep at night, and wasn’t awake to bother him like usual. Then he would end up looking ridiculous for missing his boyfriends’ lovers’ partners’ friend-with-benefits texts.

Groaning dramatically, he went to the safe hidden behind the portrait.

Opening it, he stared at the grimoire.

He could portal to the palace, check spy on Stolas, and leave. It would only take a minute. No one would even notice he left.

Feeling ridiculous he opened it, cast the spell, and stepped through it..

Immediately he looked up at the palace. It was eerily still and silent. Usually, there was a least one light shining through the windows. But tonight it was dark and dead.

Blitz shivered. The little voice in his head screeched louder.

Climbing up to the balcony wasn’t much harder in the dark, though carrying the stupid book made it a bit more challenging.

“Stolas?” Blitz hopped down from the railing, going over to the tall doors. “Are you home?”

After waiting anxiously for what must have been a minute with no reply, he pulled the door open.

The bedroom was almost pitch black, the candles in the bathroom casting writhing shadows into the room.

“Stolas?” Blitz called. “If he took a bird nap in his stinking bathtub all day I’m going to-”

He stopped short in the doorway. Stolas was in the bathtub, but the picture was wrong . It looked like he was sleeping, but he’d seen him sleeping enough times to tell that something was wrong .

“Stolas?” This time the name was said hesitantly; almost as if he talked loud enough the horror in that bathroom would come to life and eat him. “Stolas? Come on, nap time’s over.”

He didn’t want to get closer. Why didn’t he want to get closer? It’s not as if Stolas was… dead.

His brain short-circuited. Vaguely, he registered a thud. No. No, it couldn’t be.

Before his mind knew it his legs had brought him to the side of the tub.

Stolas’s eyes were half-lidded in an unnaturally pale face, his neck at an awkward angle, and his arms hanging limply by his sides.

Blitz’s heart skipped a beat. It couldn’t- he couldn't- no.

Crazed he grabbed Stolas’ shoulders shaking him hard. “You idiot! What do you think you’re doing?! You can’t die!”

He breathed heavily staring at his lover's pale face. This couldn’t be happening. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know what to do! He couldn’t do magic!

Gasping, he ran back to the doorway. Picking up the grimoire from where he had dropped it, he flipped frantically through the pages.

“Come on. Come on. There must be something in this stupid book that can help!” he shouted at the unconscious owl.

“Please!” this time voicing it at the book. “Help me!”

The book glowed and the page turned over.

Without even looking at the title, he cast the spell.

Dark blue light encased both him and Stolas.

After the light disappeared, one fell onto the floor boneless and the other came to with a gasp and a choke.

Blitz’s head hurt. Scratch that his whole body hurt. It wasn’t the piercing, blinding pain of a gunshot wound but a blanket of soreness.

He groaned pitifully and attempted to curl into a ball. Gentle hands held his legs though preventing him.

“Blitz,” a voice called, “Blitz can you hear me.”

He groaned again. The sound was making his headache worse.

“I know you feel like death, Blitz, but I need you to open your eyes.”

The thought of subjecting his poor eyes to light was sickening. He squeezed them shut tighter.

“Please, darling. Please.”

The voice sounded very desperate, Blitz thought. Why were they so scared? Or was it worried? Maybe both, he decided. He supposed the least he could do was open his eyes, just for a second.

Forcing them open, he was surprised that the candlelight didn’t sear into his brain.

He stared blurrily at the bird leaning over him. “Why are you naked?”

The bird let out a mix between a chuckle and a sob. “Oh, Blitz. I was so worried. What were you thinking using that spell?”

Blitz blinked confused. A spell. He couldn’t do magic. He thought he would remember that because that would be super cool. “Spell?”

“The transfer spell. I don’t know how you got it to work like that, switching our conditions, but it worked and oh I’m so glad you’re okay.” The owl basically landed on him, knocking the breath out of him, and then proceeded to squeeze the air out of him.

His head hitting the floor must have jarred some memories loose because suddenly he remembered why he was lying on the floor.

“Stolas?” he asked hesitantly. “You’re not dead?”

“No, darling.” The owl sat up and cradled one side of his face in his hand. “I’m not dead. You saved me.”

“Oh.” Blitz breathed. “How did I do that?”

Stolas giggled, somewhat hysterically. “You used a spell normally used on objects to switch them between places and switched our conditions. As soon as I saw you lying unconscious on the floor, I healed you.”

“Oh.”

Stolas stared at him for an eternity.

“Why did you do it?”

“What?”

“Why did you save me?”

Blitz looked at him like he was crazy. “Why would- What kind of question is that?”

“I know you don’t care for me. I-”

“You idiot,” Blitz interrupted, “I love you.”

A blush promptly took over his face and he started to stutter incoherently.

“You,” Stolas said slowly, “love me?”

Blitz looked away. “Yes”

“But- you always ignore me and yell at me and-”

Blitz turned to look at him. Guiltily he said, “I know I’m not the most- I’m terrible at words. And emotions.”

He wanted to say more but the words just wouldn’t come.

“That’s okay.” They both silently regarded each other, thinking over their actions.  “I haven’t been the best role model in this relationship either. I’ve ignored your wishes just as much as you have mine, if not more.”

Blitz said nothing. His silence answer enough.

“If you would allow me to say it, I love you too.”

He smiled and Stolas tentatively reciprocated.

“We’ll both do better.” Stolas stood up and carried the imp bridal style to the bed. “But right now, let’s get some rest. There is always tomorrow.”

“Are we going to talk about you trying to kill yourself?”

“Not right now, I feel like death and I’m sure you do too.”

“Tomorrow,” he said, and it was a promise.
