Love and Drowning
A stage adaptation
Narrator walks to centerstage
Narrator: This is a story of Ravio,
Spotlight appears on Ravio, stage left of Narrator, offering sword towards stage right
Narrator: A merchant from the kingdom of Lorule and Link, the Hero of Legend,
or Legend, for short.
Spotlight appears on Legend, stage right of narrator, accepting sword
facing stage left.
Narrator: Of combat and rescue, of water and land, of love. And drowning.
Legend and Ravio hold poses as they move towards and to centre stage left.
Turn on stage lights, backdrop is forest scene.
Narrator walks to lower stage right.
Narrator: Ravio could fight, he really could, but he didn’t want to, Legend however, could and
would. So Ravio stayed out of the way while his boyfriend fought.
Exit’s stage right
Boko puppet comes from centre stage left,
Attacks Legend and Ravio
Legend fights back with sword
He hit’s Legend back,
Legend hits him back
He hits Legend back
Ravio and Legend “fall” off stage.
Legend pulls on merman tail while backstage
Switch to river scene (Blue lighting, waving piece of blue cloth above heads)
Legend and Ravio re-emerge from centre stage left
Legend tumbles behind big rock
Red streamer from Legend towards Ravio for blood
Ravio tumbles to centre stage, panics passes out,
(switch to shallows scene (normal lighting, no blue cloth))
Ravio sit’s up,
Ravio: *Coughs* *Sputters* Mr. Hero!
Ravio runs to Legend
Ravio: Link! Link! Oh please be alright, please be alright.
Roll’s Legend toward him, Legend he's not moving, reveals tail when rolls him.
Ravio: *Screams*
Ravio starts crying, grabs Legend’s hand and drops it again, recoiling.
Ravio: Webbing?! Link, *Sobbs* Link, what happened to you?
Ravio and Legend freeze, like paused tv.
Spotlight focuses on the Narrator, dark behind the Narrator.
Narrator walks in from stage right.
Narrator: Perhaps I should explain, Legend, when in water up to his waist, turns into a merman, gills, webbing, tail. This is a fact Legend has hidden from everyone he can, Ravio included.
Walks back off stage right,
lighting returns to normal,
Red streamers run down from Legend’s head
Ravio looks down at blood
Raivo rolls Legend’s head to reveal a wound.
Ravio: I don’t know if you're still my Link Mr. Hero, but i’m going to help you anyway,
pick’s up legend princess style and heads to centre stage runs on spot,
Use lighting trick to draw focus on Ravio while Legend secretly slips off merman tail and back drop
switches to house.
Ravio: *Cough*
Ravio throws Legend onto bed
Ravio: *More coughing* *More coughing*
Ravio grabs bandage from dresser
Ravio: *Cough*
and bandages Legend’s wound.
Ravio: *cough* *cough* *cough* *sputter* *sputter* *sputter* *gasp*
Passes out on the floor.
Legend sits up
Legend: Oh no! Ravio! He saw my tail! He must have! He must have!
Stops looks around confused
Reaches up to scratch head, touches the bandage.
Legend: Ravio must have done that.
Gets out of bed and slips on Ravio’s robe, doesn’t fall over just temporarily loses balance.
Picks Ravio up and puts him on the bed.
Blue steamers come “out of Ravio’s mouth”
Legend: Oh no. No. No! NO!
Tv pause again, tv pause lighting.
Narrator walks on from stage left
Narrator: Poor Ravio. Poor Legend. I hope everything works out. You see while LEgend grew gills underwater, Raivo didn’t, and has likely drowned, only making it so far before collapsing.
Narrator walks off stage left,
Normal lighting
Legend does CPR, blue streamers coming “out of Ravio’s mouth” getting more and more desperate
Legend: Ravio! *Sob* RAVIO!
Legend falls to knees
Grabs limp hand,
Head falls on chest more “water” comes out.
Legend: Ravio is dead. And it’s my fault. I’m sorry Rav. I couldn't save you. *Sobbs*
Legend with his voice much higher: I let you down.
Ravio’s hand slowly curls around Legend’s
Ravio: *Coughing fit*
Legend helps sit him up and Ravio coughs up “water” (blue streamers)
Ravio as he’s coughing, : You didn’t let me down Mr. Hero.
Legend (Who has not heard him): Rav, I’m so glad you're alive, I’m so sorry, what you saw it was-
Suddenly stops as Ravio stands up and hugs him.
Both: Thank you.
Ravio throws up more “Water”
Legend: Aw! Rav!
Ravio his voice raw: Sorry. I think I took in a little water.
Legend: *Chuckles*
Legend goes off stage right to grab towels
Ravio goes behind changing screen and throws second matching outfit over screen edge to make it look like he’s changed into dry clothes, comes out from behind screen
Legend comes back on stage right and “Dries” up the floor, then “Changes” himself behind the
screen.
They go to the dining room and play cards for a few hands.
Legend: I’m glad you didn’t drown.
Ravio: Me too, I like me.
Both: *Laugh quietly*
They play a few more hands
Ravio: Wanna go swimming tomorrow.
Tv screen pause and lighting again.
Narrator walks to centre stage from stage right entrance.
Narrator: Don’t you just love happy endings?
