Chapter Text

“I hate Giyuu. I hate his quiet personality, I hate his long messy hair, I hate his air-headedness, I hate his ocean eyes, his deep mumble of a voice, how he has a bit of a bratty attitude, his surprisingly thin waist, his talent with a needle–” Sanemi trailed off on his bi-daily rant. Obanai, who he was speaking to, raised a brow.

“Yeah, do you hate his thin pink lips and perfect handwriting too?” Obanai teased as he hid an amused smile behind his sleeve even though he had a mask on.

“Shut up,” Sanemi growled in response. He rather harshly let his head fall to the table they were at. His forehead hit the smooth surface with a thump, and let the cold metal soothe his hot skin.

“Y’know what I think?” Obanai said, he leaned forward on his palms to get close to his friend for the best possible view of his reaction.

“What?” Sanemi mumbled against the table despite everything in his gut telling him not to ask.

“I think you actually like Giyuu, in fact you might love him.” Sanemi sat up and glared at his friend. He knew Obanai was going to say that and even worse, he knew there was a possibility it was true. Love might’ve been a strong word but he couldn’t honestly say he hated Giyuu anymore.

“The enemies-to-lovers trope suits you two, just don’t get all mushy on me.”

“I don’t like him,” Sanemi looked down like he always did when he lied to Obanai. It was hard to get things past your best friend. Obanai smirked at him, Sanemi could see it in the boy's eyes, then his attention was directed behind Sanemi.

“Yeah, well at least I think he likes you.” From where the two sat Obanai had a better view of the room. He could see everything in the cafeteria while Sanemis view was limited to the trees outside.

It took Sanemi physical effort to keep from craning his neck. Obanai would never let him live it down if he looked.

“He’s looking at you pretty damn hard, and he’s blushing a lot.” Sanemi could hear the tease in his friend's voice. Of all people that figured it out it just had to be Obanai.

“I’m gonna invite him over.”

“Don't you dare. I thought you hated him.”

Obanai shrugged, “I do, with every cell in my body, but watching you pretend like you don’t like him is worth any amount of suffering.” He stood and stepped around the table, Sanemi reached out and grabbed his arm.

“Dude, seriously don’t.”

Obanai looked down at his friend as if he were a dead spider curled on the floor, seriously Sanemi had seen him look at dead bugs with that exact expression.

“Do you remember that one time in our 2nd year of high school when you told Kanroji I liked her and she ran away? Oh wait, that was like, three weeks ago.” Obanai continued to glare at his friend.

“I’ve been doing your math homework ever since then, and I think I've paid off my debt.”

“No number of A’s could make up for the pure humiliation I went through.”

Sanemi dropped his hand and accepted his fate. Obanai disappeared behind him and inevitably walked a few tables away where Giyuu sat with his minimal friends. He could hear snippets of the conversation, not that it was a conversation. It was more of Obanai dragging Giyuu away from the table and demanding that he sat with them. In response Giyuu, who wasn’t used to Obanai so much as grazing past him, was too shocked, scared and happy to oppose. Sanemi wished he had the sense to just say no.

“Sanemi, say hi to Giyuu.”

“...hi Giyuu.” The male in question smiled and Obanai scoffed. Watching his friends get all mushy was revolting. He looked at his watch desperate for an excuse to leave.

“Y’know what. I have to meet with the chemistry teacher about a project. I’d love to stay and watch, “ he motioned between the two highschoolers, “but I really have to go. Bye Sanemi,” He teased as he walked away. Sanemi was half tempted to reach out and beg Obanai to stay, to fix the mess he just made, but begging was beneath him and Obanai would never let him live it down.

“Bye Obanai.” He said the words stiffly through clenched teeth. The black haired boy walked away and disappeared around the corner, not even in the direction of the Chemistry room. ]

The silence between Giyuu and Sanemi was thick. Giyuu was nearly radiating happiness and Sanemi couldn’t tell if it was cute or terrifying. A happy Giyuu was like a kind Obanai. It could happen but it just didn’t.

“Are you having a good day?”

“Shut up,” Sanemi grumbled. His face slightly heats up, being alone with Giyuu was awkward, not that they were technically alone, the cafeteria was still buzzing with the chatter of students. Saemi tried to think of a valid excuse to leave Giyuu. There really isn't an excuse for him to leave that Giyuu wouldn’t offer to walk with him for. For someone so damn oblivious he was kind of smart.

“Here.” Giyuu offered something in a neatly wrapped bag.

“What the fuck is this?”

“Ohagi.” Sanemi looked between the pastry and Giyuu. Did he really bring ohagi to school for Sanemi? He wanted to throw it across the room. Every atom in his body told him to chuck it and walk away but his taste buds and heart were on a completely different page.

He unwrapped the sweet and cautiously took a bite… then another… and another. It was shockingly good and definitely homemade.

“Damn this is kind of good.” Sanemi mumbled under his breath, Giyuu beamed at him and Sanemi’s heart stopped.

He was really falling for the idiot.
