Chapter Text
The rest of the night of Sasuke’s birthday is spent laying next to each other on Sasuke’s way too small bed. Naruto asks him questions and he answers.
"You’ve really liked me for this long?" Half of his body is on Sasuke’s: he accepts the weight so as not to put any more strain on Naruto’s bones. Their legs are intertwined and he holds Naruto’s right hand on his chest with both of his, caressing and playing with his fingers.
"No." Sasuke replies and before Naruto can ask for clarification, he says, "I’ve loved you for this long."
Naruto remains silent for a few seconds, way too long in Sasuke’s opinion. He wants to listen to Naruto speak all day long. "And you call me the cheesy one."
"It’s the truth, if that makes me cheesy, so be it." He turns and presses a kiss to Naruto’s lips.
Naruto’s free hand sneaks to the back of Sasuke’s head and grips his hair, pulling him closer. Sasuke wraps an arm around Naruto’s waist and tugs him so he is laying entirely on top of him. They part and Naruto rests his head on Sasuke’s shoulder, he finds a new home in the crook of his neck.
"I bet I’ve loved you for longer." Naruto speaks and leaves a kiss on Sasuke’s skin that makes him shudder.
"Fat chance," he laughs.
"No! I’m dead serious!"
Sasuke rubs his thumb over the back of Naruto’s hand still resting on his chest and brings his fingers to his lips to kiss them all over. "Did you forget I said I’ve loved you for my entire life? How do you plan to beat that?"
He moves on to kiss Naruto’s palm. "I’ve loved you longer than that."
Sasuke snorts against his hand. "What does that even mean, idiot?"
"I’m not joking," Naruto shifts so he can face Sasuke properly. "It’s like… You know, how some people say it feels like they have known each other for their entire lives?"
Sasuke rolls his eyes. "Yes, and we have– "
"That’s not the point!" Naruto interrupts him. "I’ve always felt like that, but in a more… In a bigger way, you know?"
Sasuke shakes his head. "I have no idea what you’re talking about." He says it with a smile on his lips, elated, like he’s hanging from Naruto’s every word.
"It’s like I’ve known you forever," Naruto whispers against his lips. "It’s like I’ve loved you for centuries and fate keeps ripping us apart and stitching us back together."
Sasuke chuckles and pulls Naruto even closer, if possible. "Well, you are the one person I would want to spend my every lifetime with."
"I would love you in each and every one of them– no, I know I loved you in each and every one of them."
"Same goes for me," Sasuke breathes. "Remember? A me that doesn’t love you cannot exist." And he dives right back in, claiming Naruto’s lips once again because while talking is nice, he thinks kissing Naruto may be quickly becoming his favourite activity.
Naruto whimpers as Sasuke bites his bottom lip. "Did you know… Did you know that when we were small… Whenever we weren’t together, I would cry and cry and ask where my Sas’ke went?"
Sasuke feels like he might cry. He kisses Naruto harder. "Did you know I begged my mother to teach me how to make ramen from scratch after you told me it was your favourite food?"
Naruto’s eyes shine and he moves to place a wet kiss on Sasuke’s cheek. "Did you know the reason I got really into gardening was that I wanted to grow you a tomato by myself?"
"Oh my god," Sasuke laughs, breathless as Naruto starts trailing kisses on his jaw. "I remember all that dirt. Your dad must hate me."
"Nah," Naruto sounds way too convinced, but Sasuke knows Minato would not be happy if he saw the way his son was straddling him and trying to eat away at his face. "He would never hate what makes me happy."
"I make you happy?" Sasuke teases, and his heart beats faster even though he knows the answer to that already; the last hours have pretty much solidified it.
"The happiest." And their lips meet again, and again, and again, and a million more times until the sun rises and their eyelids become heavy.
Sasuke falls asleep with both arms wrapped around Naruto’s middle and their breaths mingling together as one. It’s fine, they can share a million more kisses in the morning.
"Happy birthday, little brother." Itachi’s voice to his ear is what makes him jump awake.
"What are… What are you doin’ here?" He mumbles, eyes still half closed. He would use a hand to rub the sleep off but he really doesn’t want to move them from where they’re resting.
"Came here to surprise you, mum and dad are here too," Sasuke feels his blood chill at the mischievous tone Itachi’s voice adapts. "So, I’d suggest detangling yourself from your loverboy before they come and wake you up themselves."
Sasuke is suddenly aware of what they both must look like: Naruto snoring against his collarbone and Sasuke holding him close, an arm wrapped around his waist, their hair a mess and their shirts missing. He flushes and looks away from his brother, trying to hide the red of his cheeks and redirecting his gaze to Naruto instead. It works because his sleeping face makes him forget any embarrassment he might have felt.
He takes in the way Naruto’s pink lips part to breathe and finds, unsurprisingly, that he wants to kiss him. And now, his brain supplies exhilarated, and now he can.
He throws a side glance at his brother who stands there, a few meters from the bed, with a wicked smile on his face. He throws his hands in the air and turns when Sasuke glares at him.
Once he hears Itachi’s steps leave his room he wastes no time and leans down to press a peck to Naruto’s mouth. It makes him pout and yawn and Sasuke feels out of breath like his heart might jump out of his chest.
"Sas’ke," Naruto whines and presses his face to the crook of Sasuke’s neck. "Why’re you up?"
"We need to get up, idiot." He whispers gently, one hand rubbing Naruto’s hip.
"Why?" Naruto whines again and Sasuke thinks this is the best day of his life, how cute Naruto looks when he is tired and needs to be coaxed out of bed. He thinks he wants an entire lifetime of this.
"Well, for one, my brother and parents are here." That seems to do the job because Naruto jumps and almost pulls away. Almost. Sasuke’s hold on him doesn’t waver.
"What?!" He sounds panicked and his eyes scan the room.
"Said they wanted to surprise me, they must have let themselves in… Can’t believe this is the result of me giving a copy of the house keys to mum…"
"Oh no," Naruto whimpers and covers his face with both hands. "Did they…" his tone lowers significantly in volume. "... Come in here?"
Sasuke blinks. "Only Itachi."
"He saw?!" Naruto seems alarmingly close to banging his head against the wall behind him. Sasuke cups the back of his head with his free hand for good measure.
"Yeah," he groans. "Bastard’s never going to let me live it down."
"This is so bad!"
Sasuke rolls his eyes, his parents aren’t that bad. "It could have been worse."
"Literally how?!" Naruto sounds altered and it brings a smirk to Sasuke’s face. He loves riling him up.
"You could have been naked."
He enjoys the way Naruto flushes down to his shoulders. "You’re such a bastard!" And without any warning, he bumps their foreheads together.
"Ouch!" Sasuke yells and lets go of him, finally. "Why’d you do that for?!"
"You’re an asshole." Naruto spats but Sasuke knows he doesn’t mean it. He sits up and steps over Sasuke’s legs to climb out of bed and collect their discarded shirts. He wears Sasuke’s and throws Sasuke his own. "Get up and get dressed, asshole."
Sasuke barely catches the cloth but he doesn’t put it on, he doesn’t even move because he can’t tear his eyes away from the way his shirt hangs off Naruto’s shoulders.
"Hurry!" Sasuke scoffs because they can hear his family’s voices from the kitchen and a faint smell of eggs in the air and that is what might be making Naruto nervous.
"I’m up, I’m up," he says before pulling Naruto’s shirt over his head and climbing out of bed. He reaches Naruto’s side immediately and takes his hand to tug him along the hallway.
"Happy birthday, Sasuke!" His mother and father chirp as soon as they step inside and Mikoto leaves the stove to walk over and envelop him in a hug. "I hope you’re doing well." She speaks ever so softly.
"Oh, I bet he is. I bet he’s doing splendidly," Itachi’s mischievous tone is back. "Right, Naruto?"
They both flush and Sasuke glares at him. "Shut up, Itachi!"
"So that’s true?" Fugaku is the one who speaks this time, they all turn to him. "That’s the shirt I bought for Sasuke last Christmas." He points at Naruto and had Sasuke not known him like the back of his hand he would have betted his soul had just left his body.
"I– uh…" Naruto scratches his nape, embarrassed, and redirects his eyes anywhere but at Sasuke’s father.
But Fugaku doesn’t frown, his eyes don’t harden and he doesn’t yell. He smiles. He gives Sasuke a warm, genuine smile.
"Treat my son well, yeah?" Naruto’s head snaps at a speed that makes Sasuke wonder whether he had broken it and he nods furiously. "And you," he points at Sasuke now. "You treat him well too. I won’t go to war with Minato because of your demeanour."
Fugaku chuckles and it makes Sasuke tear up. This approval and acceptance wasn’t anything he hadn’t expected to get; he knew his father loved him from the bottom of his heart and even if that conviction was set in stone already, hearing him speak it out loud made all the difference in the world.
"This is so nice," Mikoto says. She cups Sasuke’s face with her hands and kisses both his cheeks before moving on to Naruto and taking his hands in hers. "I knew I’d find a way to marry you into this family." She winks at him.
Naruto flushes again, even darker. "Y– yeah."
"Come on, let’s have breakfast," she says gently. "It’s not every day my little boy turns twenty."
"And finds love!" Itachi supplies unhelpfully. "I really thought you were going to take that to the grave, little brother. I’m happy entering your twenties had you stop being a coward."
"Itachi…" Fugaku warns, but Sasuke only laughs and takes Naruto’s hand to drag him to the table, so they can sit together.
"Glad we stopped being cowards too." He says before wrapping an arm around Naruto’s shoulder and pulling him close.
"I’m happy about that too," Naruto whispers for only Sasuke to hear
Sasuke relishes the presence of the people he loves and presses a kiss on Naruto’s temple before taking a seat. This is going to be a good day.
