Chapter Text
I'd be lucky to be in the same room as Robin. He's the bravest, sweetest, most ambitious guy I've ever met. I may be strong but I'm not brave. A brave person would apologize for what happened. A brave person would try to save what was left of their friendship if you can call it that. A brave person wouldn't stand and watch as their friend runs away from you for the 100th time. He hates me and I can't blame him. I wish I could run from me too. Our friendship ruined and it's all my fault.
I fly into the cave and see Robin laughing on the couch with Speedy. I don't know what they're talking about but whatever it is seems to put him in a good mood. At least one of us can be happy. I land softly on the ground and watch as Speedy pulls Robin close and I start to wish I was the one sitting on the couch with him, talking with him, laughing with him, why can't I be friends with him? Because he tried to help you and you yelled at him for it. Suddenly I see a flash of yellow and get whisked away to my room. Before I can do anything Aqualad shuts the door behind him and Kid Flash sits me on the bed and crosses his arms.
"We need to talk," he says as Aqualad walks beside him.
"Is this the scuba incident? I thought you forgave me for that."
"You know exactly what he's talking about," Aqualad says, staring up at a macaroni framed photo of me and Robin at the beach. I had just joined the Titans and we finished off fighting the separated man. It was his idea to take a quick picture before we went home. His arm was wrapped around my waist and he had a smile so bright it could outshine the sun. Even with his mask, I could see the light in his eyes as he gazed softly into the camera. My eyes were on him the entire time I couldn't believe I was hugging The Boy Wonder in the flesh. I would've given anything to go on more missions with him. Looking at that photo used to fill me with joy but now staring at it is a painful reminder of what could've been.
"There's nothing to talk about."
"Ever since that big fight, you've been avoiding him," Aqualad says.
"I'm not avoiding him. He runs from me."
"You never stopped him," Kid Flash says as I find myself staring down at the floor.
"Maybe I shouldn't."
"Wondergirl-" Aqualad starts before I cut him off.
"He kicked Speedy out of the cave and came into my room to help me and what did I do? I blew up in his face."
"You forgave Speedy, why can't you forgive him."
"There's no need to forgive him. Robin didn't do anything wrong."
"Look, I know you don't agree with what he did. But-" Kid Flash says before being cut off.
"This has nothing to do with him!"
"That's why you've been talking about him for the past few weeks," Aqualad says.
"You can't avoid him forever," Kid Flash says.
"I don't want to talk to him!"
"He's our leader. It's only a matter of time before you have to team up," Aqualad says.
"That's the problem! I don't want to talk to him! I don't want to see him! I don't even want to be in the same room as him!"
"You don't mean it," Kid Flash and Aqualad say in unison.
"I can't talk to him, not after everything that happened." I hear a small whimper and loud booming footsteps heading away from my room. Wait... I thought Aqualad closed that door. It couldn't have been, please tell me it wasn't "Robin?" I fly off my bed pushing Kid Flash and Aqualad out of the way while I slam my door open. I'd recognize those pixie boots anywhere. "ROBIN!" I call out to him but before I can reach him I slam into Speedy and we fall to the ground.
"Ow!"
"Sorry Speedy but I have to find Robin."
"He's in his room. I tried following him but he slammed the door shut."
"It's my fault. I ruined things again."
"No, you didn't."
"Kid Flash and Aqualad said I should talk to Robin but I-I wouldn't listen. B-but Robin heard everything. And now he thinks I hate him and and and... it's my fault he's feeling this way."
"You want to be friends but you're both too stubborn to sit and work things out."
"He wants... to be friends with me?"
"Just as much as you want to be friends with him." He sits himself up then helps me off the ground and wipes the dirt off my suit. "Now go before you lose any chance you have of becoming friends with him." I quickly hug Speedy and then fly to Robin's room at a speed that would rival Flashes. I bang on the door hard as I can hoping that Robin would open it for me.
"I'm coming!" He says as he starts stomping towards the door. I can't say anything. If I do, he might run away again. If I burst into the room it could start another fight between us. What if I say the wrong thing? What if I do the wrong thing? What if we never speak to each other again? I didn't know I was still knocking until Robin slams the door open. "I said I'm-" He pauses for a second staring me up and down while wiping the tears off his cheeks. "Wondergirl?" All it took was one look and I could tell something was wrong. Tears well up in his eyes as he takes a step back. I wish the earth would swallow me whole but this is something I need to do. No matter how much this scares me, the thought of losing Robin scares me even more.
"Robin..." my voice cracks and I clear my throat a bit before I continue. "I just want to say I'm sorry." Before I can say anything else I lunge at him and sob into his chest. For a moment he stands frozen and I start to wonder if I did something wrong. Then he wraps his arms around me and runs his fingers through my hair as I say, "You were just trying to help me and... I acted like a jerk!"
"You were defending your friend. There's nothing wrong with that." He smiles a bit and I lean into him while he pulls me close and rubs my back.
"No, but I shouldn't have yelled at you." I hug him as tight as I can without hurting him and pat his hair as I slowly look up at him. "I know things haven't been the same since what happened last month but I-I don't-" I don't want to hurt you, I don't want to leave you, and I don't want you to leave me. "Can we start over?"
"I sorta like where we are right now." I look into his eyes and I can see the pain he's been hiding. He wasn't running from me because he was mad, he was running from me because he felt bad. He probably feels worse than I do right now. If that's the case then he must think I hate him. How could I hate someone as kind, compassionate, and loyal as he is? He could've run from me but instead, he's hugging me, he's petting me, and he's telling me that what happened wasn't my fault. Even though we both know it is. There are no words to describe how I feel about him but I can at least let him know that I care about him.
"I could never hate you." He jolts and I start to wonder if I had answered some question he had or if I simply confirmed what he already knew. We sit quietly for a few moments staring at each other as though we just met for the first time. A thousand words flutter in my head but my heart pounds so much it's suffocating. I can barely get a sound out. I'm not sure I want to. This is the first time we ever spent any time together. Anything I do could make or break our friendship. But do we have a friendship? Sure we talked between missions but we weren't nearly as close to each other as we were the other Titans. Hell, he has a better relationship with Speedy and they fight all the time. There's so much I want to know about him and so many things I want to do with him. But right now I just need to talk to him.
"Robin?"
"Y-yes?"
"Can we be friends?"
"I-I-" He stops for a moment and my heart drops. Did I say something wrong? Did I somehow mistake his comfort as some sort of invitation? Did I ruin this again? He slowly pulls out of the hug and he stares at me with a radiant grin on his face. Brighter than the one in our beach picture. "I thought we already were." I couldn't contain my joy. I grabbed his hands and spun him around squealing. He laughs and shuts the door before pulling onto his bed. We sit and talk for hours about the fight, our missions, our likes, dislikes, and the list goes on. We talked all night till we passed out from exhaustion. Now I know, we were meant to be best friends.
