Running Away to My Family

Chapter Text

The summer sun shone overhead. Jason looked out at their house; they had moved in nearly two years ago now. Damian and Lian were playing in the backyard practicing flips on the trampoline. Dick laughed and cheered as Damian mastered the new trick.

“I can do lots of tricks now Uncle D, Mrs. Hughes says I’m the best in my gymnastics class.”

“Good job, little D,” Dick gave him a high five.

Dick had made the mistake of calling him baby bat one time. The resulting fight and being banned from seeing his brother’s family for five months made sure he never did it again. Damian had no idea that either of his dads had ever been a hero or that his Uncle Dick currently was a hero. Lian barely remembered the days when Roy was Arsenal.

It had been awkward and tense for the first few times that Dick had tried to connect. There were several times that Dick thought he’d fucked everything up completely, that they would disappear in the night and he’d never see them again.

Damian was his saving grace; from the moment he met Dick he was the kid’s favorite. Even if it was over a year before he even learned of Damian’s existence, much less met him. He probably wouldn’t have met him then if Roy, Jason and Lian hadn’t caught the flu at the same time. Roy called Dick in to babysit Damian after Jason was already delirious with fever and he himself was getting sick. Dick wound up taking care of all of them as their fevers spiked.

Jason was livid when his fever went down enough that he knew what had happened. That was the turning point in Jason and Dick’s relationship, he finally believed that Dick wouldn’t rat him out to the Bats.

It would have been a perfect opportunity for Dick to do it. He could have taken them to the cave or called Alfred to come help him nurse them back to health. Instead, he did everything himself. Running IV’s so they wouldn’t dehydrate, dosing them with the proper amounts of medication, and cleaning up so much vomit.

After Jason realized that he started inviting Dick over himself, instead of just begrudgingly accepting his visits.

Dick cried the day that Jason asked him to be the best man at his wedding. It took a lot of finagling but Dick took a whole week off so he could attend and watch the kids while the two love birds took their honeymoon. The hard part was keeping adamant about the time off but not weird enough about it to make Batman curious.

“Food’s up.”

Jason pulled the last of the food off the grill. He was still getting used to having a family and celebrating the little moments with each other. Roy kissed Jason’s cheek making the younger man blush, despite their two and a half years of marriage.

“I love you, Jaybird.”

“You two are so adorable.” Dick cooed.

“Shut up.” Jason grumped.

“Oh, and how are you and Wally doing lately?” Roy countered.

Dick’s smile grew soft. “I picked out a ring last month.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I think it's time.”

“Maybe, you should bring him next time,” Jason said, pretending like it wasn’t a big deal. Like he hadn’t spent the last seven years hiding his family from anyone even tangentially involved in the hero world.

“I’d like that, Little Wing. I’ve wanted to introduce you for ages.”

Jason refused to admit it but he was glad that Dick was a stubborn asshole that wouldn't let the whole family thing go. He had never been happier.

*fun fact I originally wrote this for 'Summer' and then relized the only fic I would want to write for suburbia was this exact fic so I had to quick write Flash Family Vacation for summer instead.
