Chapter Text
spoons clink against ceramic bowls, the heat of the sun beating down on both corpse and toast. a small fan blows back in between the both of them, but it isn’t enough to appease the couple drops of sweat that trickle down the back of corpse’s neck.
“why did you get soup? you’ve been complaining about how hot it is all day,” toast points out, taking a bite of his own soup. there’s a light sheen of sweat on his brow, but he ignores it, rolling up the sleeves of his sweater. corpse shrugs, not once looking up at the male before him as they spoke.
“I don’t know. it was cold earlier, and i wanted soup. now it’s warm and… i still want soup.” he takes another bite, the broth slightly burning his tongue, and making more sweat drops accumulate. “did you drink last night?” toast asked, and again, he shrugs. “speak for yourself.”
toast doesn’t press any further, but makes a dissatisfied noise when corpse reaches over and presses a button on the fan, stopping it’s inconsistent stream of air and keeping it only on him. “Hey, hey, what are you doing?” corpse says nothing, only continuing to eat his uncomfortably warm soup.
the bell on the restaurant's door rings, footsteps approaching their table. Toast turns his head, sykkuno standing with his bag slung over his shoulder. “Hey sykkuno,” toast waves, and the aforementioned looks over. “oh, hey toast.” sykkuno’s eyes slide over to where corpse is sitting, his eyes focused on his bowl of soup. “are you eating alone? wasn’t rae coming?”
sykkuno turns his attention back to toast, tugging the strap of his bag up his shoulder. “dunno, pretty sure she’s coming after her team meeting.” sykkuno feels a pair of eyes on him, meeting corpse’s gaze when he glances over. But it’s short lived as he resumes eating his soup, head down again.
won’t even say hello, huh? definitely not rae’s type.
toast pulls out a chair for sykkuno to sit, turning to corpse. “hey, say something, sykkuno’s here. you ever seen this guy talk, sy?” the other shrugs a little, cheeks a bit pink. “uh, n-not really?” toast grins, nudging sykkuno’s shoulder. “he really likes cute things. whenever he sees a cat, he just-”
there’s a jolt beneath the table, corpse kicking toast in the shin before he could embarrass him any further. toast grips his leg and groans a bit, corpse continuing to eat his soup as if nothing happened. sykkuno watches a bead of sweat trickle down his temple, his cheeks dusted pink. “hm? cats?”
toast shakes his head a bit, biting his lip hard to ease the pain. “o-oh… it’s nothing... why don’t you go order your food?” he suggests, glaring at corpse, who doesn’t even spare him a glance. sykkuno reads over the menu, brows furrowing. he hadn’t eaten all day, having missed breakfast because he was running late for his classes.
“is rae coming late?” sykkuno shrugs, debating whether he wanted a sushi roll, poke bowl, or both. “no, she said she’ll be here soon.” he finally settles on the sushi roll, using the collar of his shirt to fan himself, waving his hand back and forth in an attempt to cool down. “isn’t it hot today? maybe i should order something cold…”
just then, a small gust of air starts blowing on him, his body temperature starting to lower a bit. “ah?” sykkuno looks over, seeing the fan now pointed towards himself and toast, corpse leaning over to click the button so it stays in place. “what are you doing?” toasts asks, “you said you were hot.”
another shrug, his soup bowl almost empty. “i’m cold now,” is all he says, not once having looked up from his bowl. toast and sykkuno share a glance at one another, sykkuno’s cheeks warm from both the heat, and the gesture.
what’s up with him? sykkuno thinks just as footsteps come running up behind them. “hi, hi, sorry i’m late!” like the rest of them, her face is pink from the heat, sweat drops on her forehead, her backpack hanging off of one shoulder. “no worries. go ahead and order, you must be hungry,” sykkuno smiles, and she pulls out the chair beside corpse, setting her backpack down.
“i’m so hot after running here,” she exhales heavily, wiping at her forehead with one of the extra napkins on the table. she doesn’t notice the way toast pushes the fan back in her direction now, her hair blowing back with the breeze. and for the first time since sykkuno arrived, corpse looks up from his bowl, just to glare at toast.
“i should order something cold!”
