“Put this on” Min hands Diya a blue blindfold, stored in the car door.
“Why do I need to put on a blindfold, is this part of the surprise?”
“Uhh, part of the surprise, yeah” even after the conversation the two had, Min was obviously still nervous. They couldn’t stop bouncing their left leg.
‘We must be close to the place Min is taking me’ she thinks while putting on the blindfold. ‘They wouldn't have me wearing a blindfold the entire time’ It's a bit itchy and can somewhat see through it, but not enough to discern her surroundings. Min was planning all of this for her, so the least she can do is play along.
“Don’t worry, we’re almost there. In the meantime you can. . . “ there's a brief pause in Min’s sentence “ . .guess where we’re going! Yeah!” If Diya could, she would roll her eyes and give her a kiss for their improvisation.
“How many guesses do I get?”
“Let's say. . . . .five, by the time you're done guessing we’ll be parked”
“Mkay, first guess.” Diya scrounges around her memory for important places, ones that bloomed both relationships into what it is today.
“Snow Castle, Our first kiss”
“Nope! And I’m like ninety percent sure that we are still banned” ‘Right, She got on the table to kiss me’ She blushes recalling the event, how close Min’s face was to her own, small breathes they had to take in between kisses, and the small gentle hands that caressed her face. Something about how a feisty and energetic person can be so gentle and tender, so kind and caring. She'd never trade it for anything in the world.
“Got a second guess? Taking a long time there”
Diya snaps out of it, and gives an answer “Uh, the Dog park.” ‘I know that's wrong, I just didn't want to keep min waiting’
“What? We’ve been driving way too long to be at a dog park, plus, Pom & Shibe would be with us.”
“I know, I just got lost in thought, gave immediate answer”
“Ah ok, we’re about to park, you got like three more guesses” Diya feels the road change, now more bumpy and uneven.
'`Okay” ‘So it's not the Dog park or snow castle, where is it?’ Diving back into her mind palace, Diya searches and reels in an answer. “Baseball game.”
“Good guess but nope! I looked online for seats this weekend, but they were all shit and in the back. You get one more guess.” Min says with confidence, that they might win this little game.
“Don’t you mean two more?”
Diya hears the car’s gear shift ‘Min must’ve found a spot quicker than they thought.’ “Well, we’re already kind of parked, so you get one,” said Min with a teasing tone.
‘Ok, final guess, gotta make this count’ She thinks about the roadside attractions that littered the side of the highway, and which ones Min would likely take her to. ‘I've always wanted to go to the Harry Potter section of Universal, but we haven’t been driving that long. Min also hates Harry Potter for some reason.’ Scratching out that possibility, Diya thinks of another guess.
She then remembers, deep down back before Min moved. A more brash Min and a Shy Diya sat in front of a TV, watching Diya’s favorite show, “The Most Extreme” a nature documentary type series, eating popcorn and drinking Capri Suns together. ‘Yes, this is the answer’
“The Zoo?”
“Yea!-I mean, ready to find out if you got it right?” Diya smiles knowingly, and nods. Min takes the blindfold off. Min was parked in a mostly shaded spot under a tree, with rays of sunlight breaching the tree’s shade. It takes a few seconds before her eyes adjust to the radiant California sun.
She looks around and sees a big sign with multiple animals jumping out of it. The most prominent animal on the sign is a cartoon monkey hanging from the top border of the sign with a speech bubble saying “WELCOME TO THE ZOO!” In big, bold, letters.
“Happy anniversary babe” Diya looks over towards Min. They have a smile on their face, but not necessarily a grin. It was a smile of complacency and love, a love of everything to do with her girlfriend, complemented with eyes that beamed adoration, and a face that once had a bandage on it from a troubled past, now healed by the love from those around them. Such strong emotions make Diya’s desert camouflage eyes start to tear up.
Min, in a panic, exclaims “ARE YOU OK, I’M SORRY IF THI-” Diya cuts Min off, putting a hand up to their lips. Diya, struggling with the human language shakes her head in response, and lunges over with utmost speed to embrace her girlfriend, with nothing to stop her.
Except the seatbelt that bound her to the Car seat, which had other ideas. Yanking Diya back toward her seat right as she was about to grapple Min in a hug. “Grk!-”. As quickly as she got up, she was now slumped in her seat. A very concerned Min is looking over towards her
“What happened! Are you ok?!”
“I still had my seatbelt on, got too excited.” Diya unbuckles the homophobic strap, Min looks like they are making up a slur for seatbelts. “I’m okay.” She sits back up with a more controlled speed, and embraces Min. Her eyes start to swell again.
“사랑해”
Min smiles, there are now tears in her eyes too.
“I’m gonna guess that you like it.” Diya pulls away from her and them in the eyes.
“Yes, I love it,” she said in a soft tone.
The couple kiss, Without realizing it, they start kissing more and more, grazing lips off each other, and nestling their heads as close as possible. Right as Min was about to slip her tongue into her mouth, Diya pulled away.
Her face is a brilliant hue of pink.“I totally forgot we’re in public, a kid could be watching.”
Min blushes “R-right”
Three seconds of silence later, Min speaks.
“You ready?”
Diya smiles
“Always, especially with you.”
