Chapter Text

“Quad over ice. And a…” Wednesday leaned to the side to glance at the glass display case next to the register, “chicken avocado wrap.” The barista, ‘Tyler’ his nametag said in bold, blue letters, nodded and smiled.

“Sure thing, Wends! It’s on me.” He held out his hand when Wednesday tried to pay for her food, smiling up at her with flushed cheeks. Disgusting.

“I thought I had told you to stop calling me that.” Wednesday looked at him through her lashes, gritting her teeth. She was this close to switching coffee shops to the place down the road, ever since she started to become regular at this place, Tyler had been obsessed with making friends with her. It was ridiculous.

“Well yeah but-”

“Enough. You have customers waiting.” Wednesday walked to the side and took her usual seat by the window, placing her bag down on the table and sitting down. She sighed, taking out a book, a collection of poems by Edgar Allen Poe that her Uncle Fester had bought her for her birthday.

“Hope you like it!” Wednesday looked up from her page to meet eyes with the overly friendly barista she was longing to stuff in a body bag and bury alive. The boy smiled, combing a hand through his wild auburn hair, “I wanted to ask you something, if you don’t mind?” Tyler looked down at the floor, twiddling with his thumbs. He stayed silent for a second, seemingly waiting for a response.

“Well? Get on with it, I don’t have all day.” Wednesday looked at the boy until he finally looked back, staring with wide eyes as if he’d seen a ghost.

“Well I uh- wanted to ask, since we’re basically friends, I mean you talk to me every time you stop in and-”

Wednesday cut him off, “I physically can not order without talking to you, disappointing as it is.” She took a sip of her coffee.

Tyler cleared his throat, letting out a strained laugh and digging his fingernails into his surely clammy palms out of nervousness, “ Guess I should just get it over with… Wednesday, do you wanna go out with me?” The barista looked down at Wednesday with hopeful eyes, rocking back and forth on his feet.

“No.”

“What?! I…you can’t be-” He stuttered, a red flush covering his face, looking around the cafe to check if anyone had noticed. He seemed embarrassed, and Wednesday thinks he should be. The goth stands up and takes her bag, not even bothering to take her food or coffee.

“You’ve wasted my precious time. Don’t do it again.” Wednesday slung her bag over her shoulder and walked out, smirking at the defeated look on Tyler’s face.

Turning up the volume on the radio, Wednesday closed her eyes and sighed. If she could drown herself in the orchestra that played from that old radio every day, she would. It was practically the only thing she actually tolerated in the small shop she worked in. The goth sat down on a stool right beside her radio. She scooped up Thing, a small, brown cat she loved so dearly, and placed him on her lap, stroking his soft head with the backs of her fingers. Today was a particularly slow day, and it was almost over. She was grateful for that. Now she could go home, maybe grab a bite to eat, sit down and type away for an hour or two. Every day was the same for Wednesday. And it was perfect. She didn’t want change.

It was perfect..

Wednesday let herself glance out the window, it was raining, puddles littered the sidewalks and chalk melted off the signs outside the cafes across the road. Everyone in the shops around her were already cleaning up, locking front doors and such. Wednesday slowly sat up from her seat, heading towards the door to lock up early. She only had about twenty minutes left before she could clock out, and certainly nobody would try to purchase something now.

Ding ding!

The door opened.

Of course. Wednesday rolled her eyes internally and raised her head to see who could be out at this hour, in this weather?

She was met with soft blue eyes, and rather…messy, wet hair. “Hey, um…I know this is kinda weird, and it’s really late, but I was sorta wondering if I could come inside for a few minutes to dry off? Sorry I- sorry.” The blonde blushed and looked down at her shoes, hands squelching inside her soaked gloves.

“And why on Earth were you out in the rain in the first place?”

The girl looked up, eyes wide, her cheeks were still a bright red. “U-um…well, I-”

“It is no use if you aren’t going to answer me,” Wednesday sighed, looking past the shivering girl’s shoulders and outside, it was still raining heavily. “Wait here. I will get you a towel.” The smaller girl shut the door softly, grabbing the softest towel she could find from the closet, and heading back to the front of the store as quickly as she could.

Enid wrapped her arms tighter around herself, her teeth chattering. A strike of lighting shot through the sky, and the blonde jumped as she heard the loud crack echo through the empty streets of Jericho. She tried busying herself with wringing out her scarf as much as she could while she waited for Wednesday to come back with a towel.

The door opened, the shorter girl had her hands under a plush looking towel, holding it up and beckoning Enid to come forward so Wednesday could dry her hair.

“Come. And take off your layers while you’re at it, you will only make yourself colder if you keep all of that on.” Enid stepped into the warm store, unzipping her coat and hanging it on the coat rack beside the checkout counter. She leaned down towards Wednesday to allow the girl to properly rub and squeeze the towel on bunches of wild hair.

When Wednesday was done with Enid’s hair, she reached for another towel, but didn’t hand it to the other girl, looking at the blonde expectantly.

“Uhum,” Enid rubbed her hands uncomfortably on the sides of her pants, teeth still chattering slightly, not knowing exactly what to say. She didn’t want to be rude and just grab the towel out of Wednesday’s hands, but she was let inside to dry off, right?

“You are still wearing that sweater. It is damp. I suggest you remove it.” Wednesday stared right up at Enid, dark eyes baring right into warm blue ones.

“O-oh…yeah I guess that would help. Sorry. Again.” Enid reached for the bottom of her sweater, pulling it over her shoulders when Wednesday looked away to move her small cat away for a second.

“Yes. Now that you are in one layer it will be much easier to-” Wednesday turned around after shooing Thing away, her grip on the soft black towel suddenly getting tighter than necessary. Enid was in a black tank top that showed off her biceps, the blonde’s slim fingers moving to the side of her blue jeans, untucking her shirt from where it was stuck under her belt, revealing the slightest bit of a toned stomach.

Wednesday’s eyes immediately shot up, holding out the fabric in her hands for Enid to take. The girl smiled wide, “Thank you! I really appreciate this.” She wrapped the towel around her shoulders and looked down at Wednesday. “I shouldn’t be too long. I’m sorry if I’m here too late.” Enid said it as if this was planned, as if she had known she would be here, with Wednesday.

Wednesday scoffed at her own thoughts, she didn’t need any change. And she certainly did not need a friend .
