being young and dipt in folly, I fell in love with melancholy

Chapter Text

When Yuuji sees Fushiguro exiting his room bright and early on Monday morning, he immediately tackles the other boy into a tight hug, hoisting him up in his arms, ignoring Fushiguro’s yelling and the hits to his head.

“Fushiguro!!! I missed you!! How was your weekend?!?”

“Fucking fine. Put me down!”

Yuuji puts the sour-faced teen down and practically skips beside him with excitement as they start towards the classroom. Fushiguro shoots him a suspicious look.

“What’s got you in such a good mood? Where were you this weekend?”

“I—”

“There you two losers are,” Kugisaki interrupts as they make it down the flight of stairs to find her waiting at the bottom with her arms crossed. “What took you so long?”

Fushiguro scowls. “We’re early, what are you—”

“Oh good, you’re here!! Guys, I have news!” He catches them both around the neck with an arm and drags them to his face. “I’m so excited, I got a boyfriend! After class today I wanna introduce you!”

There’s a pause before Kugisaki screeches. “What do you mean you got a boyfriend?! You’re not allowed to start dating someone before I do!” She fights off his arm and he just laughs. Not even her anger is enough to pop the bubble of his joy.

He feels like he’s walking on air, his heart fit to bursting. He and his boyfriend had ended up spending the entire weekend together. Somehow, neither got sent on a mission and just… hung out. Yuuji cooked up a few meals and Nanami took him out to dinner. They watched movies and talked and—

Yuuji sighs lovingly. Just had a super nice time. Nanami seemed to relax after that first morning together. He’d even been able to climb into the older man’s lap a few times, coaxing out kiss after kiss and rutting against Nanami’s abs before he was firmly—but still gently somehow—relocated back onto the couch and told to pay attention to the movie.

Sukuna’s disgust and outrage simmers in the background, but Yuuji ignores it. The curse has been more than a little peeved that things had ended up so well.

“You’re revolting.”

At first, Yuuji assumes it’s only Sukuna talking but then he realizes that it sounds distinctly feminine and he raises his face from where it had been resting on his hand to look over at Kugisaki. They're waiting for Gojo-sensei to show up, the sorcerer late as always.

“Who, me?”

“Yes, you,” she hisses. “Where do you get off, huh? Acting like a lovesick puppy. I could puke, and if that’s not bad enough, you won’t even SAY who—”

“GOOD MORNING!” Gojo-sensei yells as he bursts through the door in a flurry of activity. “How are my lovely students doing?”

Fushiguro glares. “You’re late.”

Gojo-sensei waves him off like he always does. His blindfolded face takes them in. “So, what’s the latest? You three were strangely silent this weekend!”

“Itadori was too busy macking on his new boyfriend so he couldn’t hang out,” Kugisaki says with a loud tsk. Yuuji rubs the back of his head as Gojo-sensei gasps.

“A new boyfriend?! Spill, spill, who is it!!” he demands, coming closer and looming over Yuuji.

Yuuji just laughs. “He’s coming over after school, I’ll introduce him then!”

“Ehhh?” Gojo-sensei quickly abandons Yuuji to whisper loud enough to clearly be heard with Kugisaki, “Coming to the school? Must be another sorcerer. Inumaki, maybe?”

“It’s definitely not Panda,” Kugisaki says with a scowl. “But I can’t get anything else out of him, he’s been a fucking wall.” Here, she glares at Yuuji like he’s to blame for all of her problems. He turns away from her, trying not to break under the pressure.

It’s extremely difficult not to spill. He can’t even pull out his phone because Gojo-sensei and Kugisaki are hyper-focused and Yuuji guesses that they’d try to grab it the moment it left his pocket. Which would be unfortunate because he’s got a new lock screen that would definitely spoil the surprise.

So, when the school day ends, Yuuji is a bundle of nervous energy as the three of them trail him out of the school building. His palms are sweaty. He knows Nanami will show up, of course he will, but it’s still nerve-wracking. Maybe the older man has decided he didn’t want to let people know after all? Yuuji hasn’t felt any texts but what if he missed one? What if Nanami texted and—

Seeing Nanami’s regular pale suit in the distance immediately eases his inner tension and anxiety. Yuuji perks up. “Nanamin!” he calls, waving, as he jogs up to the man’s side.

“Nanamin!” Gojo-sensei greets happily. “You’re just in time! We’re here to meet Yuuji’s boyfriend.”

At that, Nanami shoots a look at Yuuji, who just beams back. “I see,” the older sorcerer says, pushing up his glasses.

“Yeah, so where is he?” Kugisaki demands. “Because if you’ve been lying I’m taking you shopping and you’re paying for everything, don’t think—”

Yuuji wraps his arms around Nanami’s arm, leaning into his side. Nanami takes on his weight without budging an inch. “Guys, I want you to meet my boyfriend! Nanamin, these are my friends. Well, you know Gojo-sensei, obviously, but this is Kugisaki and Fushiguro.”

Kugisaki’s mouth drops open at the same time that Gojo-sensei cheers.

“We’ve met,” Fushiguro says flatly.

“You owe me 3,000 yen!” Gojo-sensei says, hand coming to clamp down on Fushiguro’s shoulder. The teen immediately swats him off. “I told you sooooo~”

“Wait, you’re dating an adult??” Kugisaki exclaims, pointing. Yuuji hears Nanami sigh. Before he can comfort Nanami or try to defuse the situation (because he’s nervous, has been nervous all day for this. Yuuji knew the reaction may not be kind, but he was kinda hoping it would go okay if only for Nanami’s sake. He knows his boyfriend has been struggling with the issue of their age gap and though in the comfort of their weekend together it had gotten better, Yuuji is afraid that at the first sign of conflict, Nanami will leave) she immediately adds, “You’re paying when we go out!”

“Eh??” Yuuji questions.

“You have a sugar daddy, I’m not paying for shit!!! You can afford things if you’re dating an adult, ugh. How unfair!! I want someone to buy me stuff.” Kugisaki eyes Nanami up and down. “What grade are you, anyway?”

“EH?? K-Kugisaki, I’m not a s-sugar baby!!” Yuuji glances up at Nanami but his face is impassive as ever.

“First grade,” Nanami answers emotionlessly.

Kugisaki nods with approval. “Great, that’s a good paycheck right there, especially with time in, it's more right?” At Nanami's nod of agreement, she smiles gleefully.

"Time in?" Yuuji asks.

"The longer you've been a sorcerer, the more your paycheck is," Nanami explains while Kugisaki cackles. "Even if you don't rank up, your paycheck will still rise every few years."

"Oh." Yuuji’s still feeling like his brain is melting out of his ears at the fact that Kugisaki thinks he’s a sugar baby when he realizes something.

“Wait, did you two have a bet on it?” he accuses, dropping Nanami’s arm and pointing at Gojo-sensei and Fushiguro. Sensei raises his hands but Yuuji isn’t fooled at all. Fushiguro won’t look him in the eye. “Explain yourselves!!”

“Welllll,” Gojo-sensei drawls, “we just noticed you two were texting a lotttt. I thought maybe Yuuji might have a crush, so I mentioned it to Megumi to see if Yuuji had mentioned anything and he hadn’t. Sensei thought a bet might seem fun! Megumi didn’t believe me at all.”

Yuuji wilts just slightly and somehow, Fushiguro seems to catch it. “Not that I didn’t think it was true,” he says. “I just figured Nanami-san wouldn’t go for it.”

“Yuuji had some extraordinary circumstances.” Nanami’s hand touches the small of Yuuji’s back and stays there, a warm spot radiating through his clothes. “Ones that I wanted to address with you, Gojo-san.”

“Oh no, Nanamin do you really—” Yuuji starts but is cut off.

“It’s not up for discussion,” Nanami says, deadly serious, and Yuuji’s shoulders slump. Gojo-sensei isn’t going to be pleased with him after that talk, he knows. Even if his ire won’t be the same as Nanami’s, Yuuji has a feeling that even if Sensei laughs and smiles, he’s going to leave the conversation feeling immensely guilty about it.

“Sure!” Gojo-sensei says gleefully. “Did you want to do it now or would you prefer to spend some time with your boyfrie—”

“Don’t do that,” Nanami cuts him off, glaring.

Gojo-sensei smiles, something predatory and feral at the edges. “Oh, you can’t stop me. You’re going to have to get very used to it Nan-a-min! Make sure you take good care of our resident sunshine here! We’re his biggest fans, after all, we wouldn’t want to see him get hurt!”

Embarrassingly, Fushiguro and Kugisaki nod at that, looking extremely serious. Yuuji’s face flushes.

“You guys don’t have to do all that!! It’s—”

“It’s fine, Yuuji,” Nanami says, leaning close enough that Yuuji can feel his breath on his cheek. The hand on his back travels to grab onto his hip and give him a squeeze. “I’ll do my best for him,” Nanami addresses this to the others. “You have my word.”

“Goody!” Gojo-sensei claps. “Then let’s go so we can get back! I’m hungry, oh, I know! Let’s all eat somewhere together! Nanamin can treat us!”

“Don’t call me that,” Nanami shoots back, voice like acid. Gojo-sensei just sticks his tongue out.

“Ohhhh, my mistake, boyfriend-only nickname huh?” He giggles.

Yuuji is about to protest when the feeling of a kiss being brushed against his temple cuts him off, short-circuiting his thought process. “Don’t argue with him, you’ll only encourage it,” Nanami whispers in his ear. Yuuji is still too surprised to respond. “I’ll be right back, see you after?”

“Y-yes!”

Nanami begins to pull away, the loss of his body heat making Yuuji wake up, and he reaches out to grab onto the man’s suit jacket. “Wait, real quick!”

He rocks up on his tiptoes to press a kiss against a sharp cheekbone and settles back down onto the flat of his feet with a grin. “See you soon!”

Once the two adults have left, Yuuji is left with his classmates. He folds his hands together and braces them against the back of his head, cocking out his hip. “So, what do you guys think?”

Fushiguro snorts. “Only you would be able to convince Nanami to date a minor. What did you do?”

“Oi! Why do you think I did anything?”

At Fushiguro’s blank stare, Yuuji pouts and looks away. “Okay, maybe I did something… but I didn’t think it would end up with us dating!”

“Just gonna pine in silence, huh?” Kugisaki asks and Yuuji nods in agreement. “I get that, crushing on adults is supposed to be like, something you do and get over you know? Make sure he doesn’t take advantage of you.”

Yuuji relaxes out of his stance and rubs his nose with a smile. “I feel like I’m more likely to do that to him than he would to me.” At her heated look, he raises his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay, but noted.”

“And share with us more! Why didn’t you mention you were crushing? I get the not mentioning you dating at first, but come on! You're supposed to talk about crushes to your friends!”

“I, uh.” Yuuji isn’t sure if Gojo-sensei will tell the other two, but he finds he doesn’t want to ruin the moment just yet. They’re both gonna be so pissed at him for the whole hanahaki ‘I was just going to die again, no biggie’ thing. “I’ll tell you everything later? But yeah, I just… I just wanted to deal with it on my own. But I’ll do better from now on! I’ll tell you guys stuff! I swear.”

“Good. First things first, have you had sex yet?” Kugisaki asks.

Yuuji starts sputtering, choking on his own spit. “Kugisaki?!”

“Don’t answer that,” Fushiguro says firmly. “I don’t want to know.”

“What?? You can’t do that! I want to know. Are you the bottom? Or the top?”

“Uh—”

Fushiguro interrupts before he can say anything else, “I don’t care, I don’t want to hear it.”

Before Kugisaki can begin to argue, Yuuji, a bit frantically, asks, “By the way, how do you Nanamin, Fushiguro?”

The raven-hair teen shrugs with disinterest. “Seen him around, the community’s pretty small you know. Plus, he hangs out with Gojo-sensei sometimes. So I’ve interacted with him outside of the school because of that.”

“I see!” Yuuji steps on the little bit of jealousy he can feel flaring up. He smiles past the sour taste in his mouth, and ignores the little voice inside himself that wants to interrogate further, figure out what their relationship has been like. “Also, Kugisaki, we just started dating this weekend.”

“So that’s where you were, huh? You dog! Top or bottom?”

“Uhh, I don’t know what that means…?”

Eh?? Are you serious? It’s— mmph!!!” She’s cut off by Fushiguro clamping his hand over her mouth.

“I. Don’t. Want. To. Hear. It,” he intones very dramatically. Yuuji’s smile feels a little pained as he watches them grapple together, arguing at each other.

Feeling his phone vibrate, he reaches into his pocket and his smile softens when he sees the name.

Nanamin ♥

We’re just about done. Ask the others where they want to eat.

Will do!

Closing out of the conversation, he locks his phone, but not before pausing to admire his lock screen. He probably looks like a dork, smiling at seemingly nothing, but he’s extremely proud of this one.

It’s Nanami, lounging against his couch, in black and white. He’s smoking a cigar, enough smoke to be seen in the photograph (which took several tries), dressed in a white button-up shirt with a few top buttons undone, and suspenders.

Yuuji is so happy.

He's so lucky.

And it was all thanks to some flowers.
