Chapter Text

Sword stared at the text in front of him. He’d chuckle before getting up and looking for a hoodie or jacket he could put on so he’d be protected from the night cold.

He grabbed a black sweater, putting it on hastily before rushing out into the night, still being cautious to not get himself into any trouble before texting the other demon back, tail flicking as he did so.

( SWORD: ) sure, where is it?

…

Rocket and Sword stood in the middle of a dark park, their shoulders touching as they watched the moonlight shine across the grassy field. Rocket had never expected Sword to actually take up his offer.

Sword turned to face Rocket, seeing his reflection in his goggles placed on top of his head. "Doesn’t the moon look great tonight?" he asked, his voice low and soothing.

Rocket nodded, his eyes fixed on Sword's face. "It really is," he replied, his voice just as soft. "I always love being out here with you, just the two of us."

Sword smiled, brushing a strand of hair out of Rocket's face. He would’ve sworn the act was platonic if anyone asked. “Yeah, me too.. I feel like I can be myself around you.. You know?”

Rocket smiled back, feeling a sense of gratitude wash over him. "I know what you mean man. I feel like I can talk to you about anything.”

Sword put an arm around Rocket's shoulder, pulling him closer. "Of course, man. I'll always be here for you, no matter what."

Rocket smiled, feeling a sense of warmth wash over him. He turned to face Sword, their eyes locked on each other. For a moment, he almost felt like he could kiss Sword right there in the park, under the moonlight.

But before he could act on his feelings, a loud noise broke the tension. They both turned to see a group of children running past them, giggling and laughing. Sword rolled his eyes, but Rocket just chuckled.

A buzz came from Rocket's pocket as he pulled out his phone; it was his dad, he was a bit concerned from Rocket's presence being gone.

"Well, I guess that's my cue to head back," he said, letting go of Sword's hand before heading back to his home, waving as he turned the corner.

He walked in silence for a few moments, before pausing and looking back for a second, seeing Sword’s face turned at him before he jumped a little and proceeding to wave back.

“See you.” the rocketeer smiled, texting his father back.

“Huh- OH! Bye!” Sword waved more aggressively, giggling until he couldn’t see Rocket anymore. “Love you.” the swordsman said through gritted teeth.

The swordsman turned, walking back to his apartment. He felt fuzzy when around Rocket, it was comforting, the way he grasped onto the other’s hand.

It was just friendship though. He was sure of it.. Right?

. . .

The rocketeer heard the familiar sound of chains rusting as he shut the house door.

“Where ya been?” Broker smiled, “With that little knight of yours?” He’d tease before playfully pushing Rocket, the smaller demon clearly not enjoying it.

“Sword and I are just friends, Broker.” He said reluctantly, avoiding eye contact with the criminal, “Nothing more.. I think.” the rocketeer spoke again, the last part slipping out of his tongue.

“You think?” Zuka commented, smiling before returning to whatever the veteran was doing.

The rocketeer gave a sigh, a blue blush slightly imprinted on his face as he walked up to his room, opening the messages between him and Sword, giggling as he did so a little.

…

The demon fumbled with the keys to his apartment, eventually opening it; seeing Medkit make some smalltalk with another demon who lived nearby.

Sword sighed with relief and collapsed onto his bed as he closed the door, smiling a little as he thought back to the time with the blue horned demon.

The warmth of the others hand compared to the chilly night sky was stuck in the demons head, something he couldn’t get out.

His phone would buzz, interrupting his thoughts as he looked at the message, eyes widening and a big smile plastered on his face realizing it was from the rocketeer.

( ROCKET ): HEY DUDE!! sorry 4 leaving da park early.. we can do it tmrw if u want though!!

Sword gave a warm smile by just seeing the text. Even if they had met recently, they really seemed to click, it was nice even just talking to the demon.

The swordsman giggled and flushed slightly at the thought of them hanging out in the park again. Just the two of them, nobody else. At least he hoped.

…

Rocket waited impatiently for a response, was he too awkward? Was he too eager to hang out. Maybe he should just delete the text.

A buzz from the blue horned demons phone interrupted his train of thought, as he looked down at his phone, realizing it was from Sword, he panicked a bit before gathering the courage to open the message, hoping it wasn't negative.

( SWORD ): sure man!! :) also no worries LOL ur good!!

The rocketeer nearly jumped from his position in excitement. Even though he was worried that he was too pushy. It worked in his favor, though.

( ROCKET ): cool!! tomorrow at 1pm? we could do it later if u want 2

The rocketeer looked away from his screen a chuckle emerging from his lips before looking back, seeing he had gotten a response.

( SWORD ): yeah!! idm

Rocket smiled at the text, giving a thumbs up before stretching from his position, he didn’t want to overthink anything. He just hoped it would go well.

…

The red horned demon put his phone down, fiddling with his fingers as he thought about the day coming next.

It wasn’t a date, at least that’s what he thought. What if it was and he was too casual?

Sword sighed before discarding his previous thoughts, grabbing his phone and scrolling back at their messages. They talked a lot despite not knowing each other long. They really did click.

He looked away for a minute, staring at the wall, deep in thought again before getting up and opened the bathroom door to take a shower.

He would hope it would take his mind off things, though he’d still keep going back at the messages between him and the rocketeer, mind continuing to go back to the moment their hands intertwined as he grasped onto the shower curtain as the water turned from cool to warm.

“Jeez, this is so corny.” he’d say, blushing a little before perking up and setting his phone down.

He looked forward to the day ahead of them.

…

The beeping of the swordsman alarm woke him up. It was about 10am, He didn’t have school that day, so he could do whatever he wanted for the time being.

The light of the sun seeped through the demons curtains, practically flashbanging him and he grabbed his phone from the drawer next to him, reminded of the “date” they planned the day before.

“Oh,” the demon looked at the message, rubbing his eyes as he stretched, going to brush his teeth.
He REALLY hoped the time at the park between him and the rocketeer would go well.

…

The rocketeer grabbed his bowl of cereal before laying on his bed, looking up at the cereal and the sunlight shining through the windows and peeking from under the door.

Rocket's thoughts brought back to how the two demons hanged out at the park yesterday under the moonlight, a warm smile placed on his face as he looked over at his phone.

Rocket pondered about his relationship with Sword. He knew that he should talk to Sword about it, but the thought of doing so filled him with dread. What if Sword didn't feel the same way? What if he had misread the situation and they were just friends after all?

The rocketeer shook his head, discarding his thoughts as he checked the time, getting up from his bed and going to take a morning shower to get ready for Sword and his re-do of their “date” that morning, he didn’t feel like texting swordsman about it incase he forgot, Rocket was sure the guy could remember basic things.
…
The swordsman sat at the bench, waiting for the rocketeer, worried he wouldn’t show up.

“SFOTH,” he sighed, “Maybe I should just go-” The demons thought were cut short as Rocket placed his head on Sword’s shoulders, causing him to jump.

“GAH!” The demon screamed, before turning and relaxing a little, “Don’t do that..”

Rocket chuckled in response before sitting himself down, scooting a little closer to Sword.

The two sat in silence as Sword glanced down at Rocket’s hand, realizing how close his was to the rocketeers.

Sword placed his hand onto the other demon’s, hoping it wasn’t too awkward, before tightening the grasp onto the rocketeers hand, capturing Rocket’s attention as he looked away, pulling back.

“Sorry I just-” Sword muttered before Rocket spoke.

“No- It’s fine.. You should uh.. Do that again.” The swordsman flushed at Rocket’s response before placing his hand over the others again.

It was awkward, but it felt nice and comforting, even though Rocket’s hand was colder than last time.

Sword chuckled before smiling, eyes falling onto the demon next to him.

These acts are just friendship, he was sure of it.
