Chapter Text
James had detention for setting a plant on fire in Herbology and Peter was in the library to cram for an essay he forgot. You were sitting on bed, reading a book, and I came in after talking with some people in the Common Room.
"Hey Remu." You said, without looking up from your book and I paused.
"Remu!?"
"Yeah," You looked up at me. "A nickname, don't you like it Remu?"
"Of course not, I sound like an emu, Siri."
"...Ok I'll stop," You laughed.
I walked over to the bin to throw away a tissue I still had in my pocket, and saw this morning's letter lying there. We'd been friends for 3 years, and you still wouldn't let anyone take a slightest look at them.
"Hey Sirius, why do you always throw away your letters? You've been doing it since we got here, everyone else keeps them." I held it up while squatting on the floor. I knew it was because of your parents, but I thought you'd let us look by now.
You were silent for a second. "It's just, my family's not too pleased with the fact I'm Gryffindor," You hesitated and looked away uncomfortably. "...You can read it if you want to."
"You sure?" I was both surprised and happy you considered me close enough to read it.
"Yeah," You smiled weakly. "We're friends after all."
I smiled back and my heart dropped slightly, but nevertheless I opened it and sat down on my bed.
'Dearest Sirius,
we heard you got a "B" on your last exam. We thought that, being a gryffindor, you'd get good grades. An "A" at least, would be the bare minimum and it should be. Stop hanging around these rowdy friends of yours and find better people to be around with. At least people you can study with. You're better than this.
Sincerely,
your parents.'
I just sat there for a minute, and looked over at you. You were sitting there looking at me.
"Sir-" I started, and a tear started to work its way down your face. I'd never seen you cry before. I didn't know what to say so I just ran over and held you while you broke down in my arms. I felt so bad, I didn't know what to say, or do. I wanted to help you but didn't know how.
"H-" I hesitated. "How long has this been going on for?"
"Only since the sorting, they used to be nice enough to deal with."
"Well fuck them, you have full permission to invite them into the Shrieking Shack next full moon."
You started to laugh and wiped your cheek.
"...I'm sorry." You looked up at me and I promptly flicked your nose.
"Sorry for what, having parents with no damn self control?"
You smiled weakly. "No, for putting this on you."
"Shut the fuck up man. I put the fact I'm a werewolf on you, that's just what..friends do."
"Thanks Remus."
I crumpled up the letter, tossed it into the fire, and watched it disappear into ashes.
“Do you want to play Chess?” You suddenly asked and I spun around, confused.
“Huh?”
“Do you want to play Chess?” You repeated.
“Uh- I mean sure but what.”
“I don't know, just, Chess.”
I laughed. “Accio Chess.” The Wizard Chess flew over to the table and, with some coaxing, the pawns walked and rode to their places. I beckoned you over and we sat down opposite eachother.
“Prepare to be destroyed.” I smirked.
“No need,” you responded. “That's like preparing to find out I'm actually a Hufflepuff.”
I snorted and we started playing, you won the first game and (obviously) rubbed it in my face. Of course that couldn't stand, so I demanded a rematch. That one I won, and I rubbed it back in yours…literally, I rubbed the chess board in your face.
After that ‘lovely display of affection’ (your words), you decided you had enough of chess. I forced the pawns back in their box and while I was walking back to the cupboard you me in the back of my head with a chess pawn that escaped making me hit the cupboard with my elbow. A few books fell out and I sighed.
“Really Sirius?” You grinned at me as I turned to look at you. “You better help me tidy.”
You sighed and grumbled but walked over to me and squatted down on the floor, starting to pick up the dropped books while I put the chess in the cupboard. After that was done I sat down opposite and also started picking up the books.
“Si-” I looked up at you and stopped.
Fuck.
You were sitting there, with a few wild strands falling in front of your eyes and you brushed them away with the back of your palm. Your slightly tanned skin. Your grey eyes reading the summary on the back of an old romance book.
Fuck.
I couldn't be in love with you?
.. Right?
Yet here I was.
In love with you.
I realised you were standing up and forced myself out
of my trance.
“There you go Your Royal Highness.” You bowed extravagantly and I snorted.
Fuck.
