Chapter Text

The next weeks after their first encounter, Clover didn’t really see Chara at all.
They were quick to realize how lonely this place seemed to be, as gorgeous as it was, it was rather…empty, Not a single soul in sight, and what better phrase to describe all of this! The only other person alive in this place was a soulless human who didn’t even like calling itself human, and considering they had given up their own soul to the monsters, technically, Clover was also soulless.
They didn’t know what mortified them the most, the loneliness, the fact that they would most likely never see any of their friends again…

or how incredibly bored they were right now.
how else were they supposed to feel?! there was nothing to do aside from staring at a pretty landscape and smelling some flowers and sleeping! could they even sleep? they had no idea and did not want to find out, they never liked sleeping anyways.
it was objectively a waste of time that they could easily spend on cleaning or cooking food, being productive

being helpful.

but right now they were not being helpful, or productive, or anything.
they weren’t anything anymore.

“Gosh, Clover- keep it together!” they told themselves, covering their face with their hands and taking a deep breath. They already had enough on their mind and did not want to add their lack of purpose in life(death) to the list, so they walked around aimlessly through the infinite field..which they realized after walking for a while, had much more to it rather than just being a field; every step they made the flowers around them would change colors, small orbs of light would spawn into existence when they least expected it, there was a whole forest- wait.
..Not even that far away from when they first woke up, there was a forest. an entire forest they had not seen before today. Clover was outraged to say the least, how didn’t they notice there was a whole forest just- there?
Wait, was it always there? how were they so sure it didn’t just spawned into existence right now? The void was complicated to understand, the name itself being contradictory as they were in fact not in a void, but a field.
a field that had just spawned in a forest… a forest that they could explore and perhaps, find something they could do to kill time!
It was too convenient, sure, but what was the worst that could happen?
“I can’t die again can I, now?” they thought at loud. Reaching to re-adjust a hat on their head they no longer possessed and feeling disappointed when all they grabbed onto was a lock of hair, clover delved into the depths of the forest.

the forest was dense, full of dark green trees covered in..snow? The sun was barely able to shine through, the ground was covered in flowers, all different shades of red, Clover felt really bad for stepping on them.
the vibes were weird that was for sure, but what most irked clover was how much this place was reminding them of snowding, how similar the atmosphere was- except for the red path of flowers,- with little to no light and trees that honestly felt out of place, covered in snow
It felt like a fever dream.

But the clover was determined to find something to do there, and so they continued to walk. their mission quickly being forgotten as they got distracted by a cute spot in the forest with a lot of flower patches surrounding it. They sat down to look in more detail at the red flowers.
heart-shaped petals with white at the center, very specific, but cute design
Clover wished they had a pen and some paper so they could maybe draw it, keep track of things they see in this place, they never enjoyed not being able to remember or show things to people in the moment..
Then they felt a light breeze followed by a loud thud, and just as if the universe itself had heard their prayers, a notebook and some colored pencils fell from the sky right in front of them!

falling right at the top of a patch of the flowers they wanted to draw.
they scoffed, okay maybe the universe was not completely on their side.
but had it ever been on their side?
“..thank you, I guess” they nervously shouted to..nothing… They carefully approached the notebook and pencils, grabbing them as quickly as they could, fearing something might snatch them away into the dark, they looked around and when nothing happened, they just sat on the ground again.
taking their newly acquired color pencils, Clover started sketching out the flowers. Drawing was not exactly their forte, but they enjoyed doing it anyway, they remember they tried practicing back at home when they had free time, which was not often, and usually they were too tired to draw anything once they were actually free. They stuck with the whole cowboy thing because it was easier to wear a costume and shoot a toy gun than pick up a discipline such as drawing, but now? now they had all the time in the world.

They could draw all the cowboy comics they could possibly imagine..

They were too busy drawing the flower to focus on cowboys though, so focused in fact they did not realize it had become really dark all of a sudden. wasn’t the sky always in a state of perpetual twilight? or at least it had been for the past couple weeks
but for some reason, they were still able to see what they were drawing on their notebook, it emitted a dimm light that was bright enough to not blind them and be able to keep working on their doodles, Clover had draw lots of flowers and some trees, the page they were drawing in almost filled completely, even if it was definitely not their best work it was a considerable improvement from what they could do when exhausted from cooking, cleaning, lack of sleep..
which now that they realize, is not something they’ve done at all since getting to the void.
they’ve realized quite a lot of things since they got to the void.
Clover wanted to learn more about it.
graving their color pencils once more, they flipped the page, and started writing down all the things they found interesting about the void, like the fact that it seemed to be alive in some way and could listen to them, but aside from that it was harmless.
Clover was actually very at peace with themselves in this place, aside from grieving and having existential crises about what it means to be dead every now and then- they were there, peacefully.
no one wanted to immediately fight them
mainly because there was no one, but still.

They had never experienced such an amount of peace in their life, and thus, didn’t know what to do with it.
They didn’t enjoy it fully, the lack of company, even if it wasn’t good company.
Clover had never liked being alone..

Which is why when they heard footsteps approaching them their heart started to race, either out of excitement or because of the imminent dread that would come with it.

And there they were, glaring at clover with it’s bright red eyes,
in their hand was one of the red flowers Clover had been drawing for the past hour.
“...What is this?” They ask,
“excuse me?-”
“What is this place?” They seemed annoyed.
“I don’t know.” Clover answered in full honesty.
“oh.” It looked even more annoyed, “then why is it here?” they asked again,
“uh..” Clover frowns, “sorry, I thought you didn’t like the Idea of me existing here? Why are you asking me things now?” they questioned,

“oh?” It tilted their head, clover couldn’t help but compare them to a cat in their head
it helped not make them seem as scary.
“What have I done to make you think that, human?” they smirked

Clover was baffled, the audacity! “well- for starters, you literally said so?” they nervously answered, “you left demanding me not to follow- what else am I supposed to think?” they pointed out,

Chara frowned slightly, they squint their eyes as if it was thinking of something to say, “do not get me wrong,”

“I highly dislike you, human.”
“ However,” they smiled menacingly, “you’re making change. and that is something I have not seen before in this place”
Whatever could they mean by that? change could be a lot of things.. Clover looked at them, confused “It’s intriguing, really” they took a step closer, leaning down to look at Clover who was now frowning.

“Humans are capable of so much change, did you know? usually though, it ends in something bad.”

“How are you so sure about that?” Clover asked.

“Because humans don’t change to be better,” Chara replied, taking the red flower within its hands, toying with the petals.“you know about why monsters were trapped underground, human?”
“Well..” Clover scratched their head, “I know there was a war but.. aside from that, no. not really” they said almost defeated. Chara ripped a petal from the flower.
“The war happened because humans feared the monsters.”
Clover was slightly shocked by this, “wait..that’s just stupid. Why would they do that?! aren’t human souls way stronger than monsters?” another petal was ripped off.
“you would be correct. they saw a potential threat to them, even though they had the advantage, and decided to get rid of it. They decided to change the world around them without thinking of how it would affect the other side.”

“Humans are selfish.” another petal.
Clover didn’t know how to reply to all that, they knew Chara was most certainly biased, but they didn’t know why. They sighed, biting their inner cheek, they frowned.
Clover was frustrated.
“I..can’t deny that you are right about that-” Chara smiled slightly at the comment, “however,” the smile instantly disappeared.

“I think you’re wrong about humans not being able to change for the good.” now they were looking at clover with curiosity,

“how so?”

“well,” Clover paused, trying to figure out the best way to word this in their head, “you mentioned how humans went to war with monsters in the past. didn’t you?”

“yes I did-”

“Humans hated monsterkind back then, didn’t they?”

“that would be correct-”

“If all humans only change for worse, then how come we don’t hate monsters?”

Chara gasped in surprise,”I-..”

“....”

they looked around, looking for something that wasn’t there

…like a proper answer.

Chara blushed intensely, their face clenched out of embarrassment. Clover couldn’t help but giggle at the sight of it. “What the hell are you laughing about?!” they snapped, and the clover bursted out laughing.
“hey you IDIOT!” they shouted again, to no result though, clover kept on gasping for air as they wheezed. This was hilarious for them!
“so- so you’re telling me-” they tried to calm down, “this whole time- you didn’t think about that?!” they bursted out laughing again, “did you think you were the exception to the rule or-OW!” Chara had kicked Clover on the face, really hard they may add, if they were alive it could've easily caused their nose to break.

Chara looked at them in disbelief, the red flower in their hand being grasped with force, holding it close to their chest. “You think you can just point out something like that and make me change my entire point of view? as if I already didn’t know that?” they spoke with a low tone, “because, believe me, I do know.”

“and I don’t care!” another petal was ripped. “Humans cannot change for good, and I am no exception to this rule.”

And although it seemed pointless to fight them off, clover was stubborn, and they would not back down on making their point. “I will prove you wrong.”, they stood up, graving one of the flowers from the ground, they pointed in chara’s direction. “I will make you see that humans can do good.”

Chara looked at them confused, but curious at the same time, Clover continued, “I will prove to you that you are wrong.”

“How are you so sure you will do that?” They glared at Clover.

They stepped closer to chara, offering the red flower to them. “would you at least let me try?”

There was quiet, too much quiet. Chara stared at them in silence, Clover’s arm started to tremble from having it raised for too long.

Chara sighed, “what is your name?” they asked, Clover was baffled by this, had they not told them their name during all this time? “I mean, I can’t keep calling you an annoying lower being in my head, can I?” They smiled.

“Okay you think you are so funny-” Chara huffed at the reaction, “but since you ask, my name is Clover.”

“Clover..” They repeated “it has a nice ring to it…Alright then, Clover” They gave them a sinister smile, grabbing the flower that was on their hand.

“Prove me wrong, if you dare.”
