Chapter 2: Story Notes

Summary:

Just in-universe information that might make things more understandable and give context!

Chapter Text

Ages:

  • Wén Píng - 30
  • Wú Báiqǐ & Xú Jìn - 29
  • Xǔ Jiā - 28
  • Gù Yuán & Fù Xuān - 27
  • Guō Ruì - 26
  • Lán Xiāng & Fù Róng - 25
  • Zhāng Yán -23
  • Fù Guān - 16

Relations:

  • Wén Píng and Xú Jìn are cousins.
  • Fù Xuān, Fù Róng, and Fù Guān are siblings.
  • Wú Báiqǐ, Zhāng Yán, and Guō Ruì are cousins.
  • Wú Báiqǐ and Zhāng Yán are half-brothers.

  • Wén Píng and Gù Yuán are dating.
  • Xú Jìn and Fù Róng are dating.
  • Xǔ Jiā and Lán Xiāng are dating.
  • Wú Báiqǐ and Fù Xuān are dating by the end of the fic.

Notes:

  • Gù Yuán, Lán Xiāng, and Guō Ruì work together, hence the familiarity at which he thinks about them/addresses them.
  • Guō Ruì refers to Wú Báiqǐ as Dà-gē; Xú Jìn as Èr-gē; Wén Píng as Sān-gē; and Xǔ Jiā as Sì-gē.
  • Wú Báiqǐ is Dà-gē because he's the one that's related to him.  Xú Jìn is Èr-gē because he's second-closest in familiarity to him.  And Wén Píng is Sān-gē and Xǔ Jiā is Sì-gē because Wén Píng is older.
  • Like in canon, I've kept in the character backstory of Wén Píng and Fù Róng having been childhood friends, hence his use of her nickname.
  • I also kept the relationship of animosity between Wú Báiqǐ and Zhāng Yán, though I have Zhāng Yán more mentally stable than he is in the show.  There's a six-year age gap between them in the fic, and so in my mind, their father (like he did in the show) fueled Zhāng Yán's negative feelings about his older brother.  A lot of them stem from him feeling like Wú Báiqǐ abandoned him, leaving him with their father and Zhāng Yán's mother.  I headcanon that their father is definitely emotionally abusive along with physically, like he is in the show, except he uses that to pit the brothers against each other.  Wú Báiqǐ feels bad that he left Zhāng Yán there, but he couldn't stay there either, so when he got the chance to leave for university, he took it.  Zhāng Yán would've been in his late-adolescence/early-teens, which made him especially vulnerable to their father's manipulation.
  • Zhāng Yán and Guō Ruì don't necessarily not get along, but there is a lot of tension in their relationship, as well.  Zhāng Yán feels like Guō Ruì picks Wú Báiqǐ's side more, but at the same time, Guō Ruì tried to step in multiple times when he and Zhāng Yán were younger, and tried to get Zhāng Yán out of the house whenever he could.  Essentially, as long as neither of them bring up Wú Báiqǐ in conversation as much as possible, they get along fine.

If you have any questions over something I didn't cover above/want to know more about, let me know in the comments!  Thank you for reading <3

Notes:

The movie that they went to see was “Ready or Not” (2019), which I personally think is a great film, if gory.
Wú Báiqǐ was canonically shot with arrows and was in a wheelchair for a bit on the show. I took that and turned it into Wú Báiqǐ uses walking aides and a wheelchair when necessary. Gù Yuán was stabbed in the diaphragm-ish area and died in the show, but I loved her character (even with all she did) and so, while it isn't detailed, she is also disabled. I might write something later that does go into it more (I'm thinking something to do with breathing or back problems, but I need to do more research before I actually commit to anything), but just know that she was having a great day in the fic.
You can read it on tumblr here!

EDIT: As of 20240416, this fic has been edited to flow a bit more smoothly and have more interactions between the characters to give better understanding of the various relationships in-universe.
