A Night to Remember

Chapter 3: An Unforgettable Night

Summary:

The date!

There is no summary! Just go! Read read read!

Notes:

The first two chapters were around 1.7k words each.

This chapter is around 4k words… please enjoy.

Also, I will jump for joy for anyone who recognizes what the opera is inspired by. You can probably figure it out just from the details, but translating the names of the characters can provide a bigger hint.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Peruere considers herself quite collected, she doesn’t get easily surprised and even when she does, it doesn’t make itself known on her face. But nothing could have prepared her for just how gorgeous Aether was when he arrived at the Waterway hub that afternoon.

‘Sacré sept patriarches, il était magnifique.’

Her eyes immediately focused on his face, noticing how his hair wasn't braided for the occasion. Instead, it cascaded freely down his back, with a few delicate strands flowing in front of him, framing his features. His face seemed softer, his lips slightly fuller, likely enhanced by the finest Fontaine beauty products. To the left of his face, Aether still wore his usual jewelry, but she also noticed a white hibiscus-like flower with a soft yellow pistil and gentle blue stem tucked behind his ear—inteyvats, the national flower of Khaenri’ah, as Pierro had mentioned to her when discussing her lineage.

Her gaze then lowered to Aether’s upper body, taking in the intricate details of his attire. He wore a deep blue vest that nearly faded to black, the rich color adding a sense of depth and elegance. The buttons adorning the vest were shaped like stars, with faint gold highlights that caught the light with every movement, perfectly complementing the golden waistpiece he was known for and still wore. Draped over his shoulders and wrapping around him was a dark blue coat that transitioned into a deep violet, with white specks trailing through it, reminiscent of the starry nights of Teyvat. The coat's interior lining, visible with his movements, shimmered almost otherworldly, adding a celestial charm to his ensemble.

Below his waist, the coat gracefully gave way to a flowing skirt that mirrored the aesthetic of his coat. The upper part of the dress began in a twilight hue, gradually darkening to a rich evening shade as her gaze traveled downward. Ethereal golden highlights decorated the dress in sparing, elegant streaks, reminiscent of shooting stars darting across the night sky. The left side of the gown was adorned with delicate dry romaritime flowers, their meaning a mystery to her, she would have to ask Lyney about them later. The ensemble was completed with a pair of heels that were similar to his original outfit, adding a touch of familiarity to his appearance.

Peruere was needless to say, smitten. As her eyes returned to the face that had stolen her heart mere moments ago, she noticed the faint blush painting his face, a nervous smile joining suit as their eyes locked. “Y-you’ve been staring for a while Peruere, it doesn’t look distasteful, does it?”

The fact that he even made such a suggestion was blasphemous to her. “I’m not sure if my eyes have ever had the luxury of setting my sight at such divinity... you’re beautiful as always Aether.”

His face was decorated with a deeper scarlet as he laughed gently at the knave’s compliment. “You’re words make me feel so special, thank you.” She extends an arm towards him as he clasps his around hers, the knave escorting him towards the Aquabus that was secured for their day.

As they settled into their seats Peruere addressed their melusine attendant. “To the Opera Epiclese.”

Aether doesn’t think he’ll ever get tired of admiring the beauty of the Fontaine. From the foggy forests of the Erinnyes to the slopes that decorate the Morte.

Something else he worries he won’t ever be able to do is take his eyes off of Peruere. Aether had already found her charming and elegant before in her usual attire, but he hadn’t expected her to bring out something that topped even that.

Her suit featured a sleek, tailored black coat with a subtle sheen. The coat's cuffs were adorned with a red velvet, adding vibrant accents, while intricate white embroidery on the cuffs resembled delicate snowflakes, a nod to the cold elegance of Snezhnaya he presumed. Beneath the coat, she wore a white dress shirt, which contrasted the richness of the black and red. The shirt was buttoned with small, polished silver buttons, each engraved with a tiny, intricate pattern that shimmered subtly. A red silk cravat was tied neatly at her neck, reminiscent of high-class clothing he had seen in other worlds.

Her trousers were perfectly tailored, made from the same black fabric as the coat, and flowed down to her ankles where they met polished black heeled boots. A black waistcoat with white pinstripes, cinched by a slender red belt, added a touch of sophistication.

To complete the ensemble, Peruere wore a small, intricately designed silver brooch in the shape of her knave insignia on her left breast.

The overall effect was striking—Peruere’s outfit exuded a sense of command and elegance, an authority he had no wish to defy. As he felt himself getting lost in her attire, he noticed her eyes watching him. Embarrassed, he quickly turns away, feeling shameful at his lack of control over himself. He hears the gentle laughter at his display. “There is no need to be shy mon étoile, it’s alright to stare.”

The odds of him getting through this day before he dies from her charisma are definitely not in his favor.

“I’m surprised you were able to seat us up here,” Aether says in amazement. He always wondered what the view of the opera house looked like from where Furina sat.

As Peruere waved for the waitress down low to come and take their orders, she responded. “Well I am taking you out for the day, it’s only natural that I serve you the best.”

Once again, the knave is out for his heart and seems to always know exactly what to say. Like a scarlet spider wrapping a golden butterfly in its crimson threads, he felt as though Peruere has him trapped in her parlor.

When the waitress reaches them, Peruere turns to face her. “A Fontaine claret for me, and…”

“Do you happen to have dandelion wine?” The waitress nods to Aether’s question, “then I would like that please.”

As the waitress takes her leave, the knave can’t help but ask. “I’m surprised that you requested an alcoholic beverage, you don’t seem like that type.”

“Aren’t you the one always remarking about everyone’s perception of you is built on presumptions and assumptions.” He enjoyed the moment he got to tease her as she scoffed at his remark. “You are right though, I’m normally not fond of alcohol. I don’t particularly dislike it, but I don’t have the best alcohol tolerance. Tonight is a special occasion though, so I’m willing to go against my principles.”

“You may do as you please, but perhaps drink in moderation for your own sake.”

As the two converse, a woman takes the stage, addressing the audience about the performance to come. "I was honestly quite excited to see this opera, I've heard that the writers for La Tragédie des Larmes were even able to get some insight and critique from Furina herself despite her departure from the stage." As Aether spoke, he turned back to Peruere, with a bit of a stern stare. "You have apologized to her, right?"

"...I did have Lyney deliver her an assortment of cakes made by the children themselves..." she says under his strict gaze.

"...I'll make sure that you apologize to her properly in person, miss knave..."

As they exited the Opera Epiclese, Aether's voice filled the night air with his recounting of the performance. “And during the fourth act, when Neuf spoke of desiring ‘the touch of something that no longer exists,’ I couldn’t help but feel for him. Even if he was unsure of how to mourn, despite Deux and him not being human, they both have souls.”

Turning back to face Peruere, Aether couldn’t help the hint of self-consciousness in his eyes. “Sorry, I’m rambling, aren’t I?”

They stopped in front of the Fountain of Lucine, its waters shimmering under the evening sky. Peruere responded with a rare softness, “There’s no need to apologize. I enjoy listening to your voice. It’s quite soothing.”

Aether’s cheeks flushed at her words. “I fear that you will give me so many compliments today that you’ll run out of anything good to say about me soon.”

“Nonsense,” she replied with a small smile. “I’m sure that I couldn’t even scratch the surface in my lifetime.”

Unseen to her, Aether’s face briefly took on a somber expression. “Right… a lifetime…” he murmured. Just as quickly as it came, the shadow passed, and his usual demeanor returned before she could notice.

As they continued their stroll under the evening Fontaine sky, Peruere offered her thoughts on the opera. “I do believe that the situation Deux and Neuf found themselves in was quite tragic. However, I must not condone the way Neuf allowed his emotions to consume him after he lost Deux. It was fortunate that the previous Deux was there to reign him in.”

Aether nodded thoughtfully. “I suppose you’re right. Perhaps I sympathize so much with him because his circumstances remind me of my own.” They reminded him of... ... ...

He glanced at her, trying to think of anything else except for what he currently was. “I… recall you mentioning you had somewhere else to take me this evening?”

Peruere’s eyes turned to face him. “Indeed, I have another surprise planned for us. Shall we?”

Peruere led Aether through the streets of Fontaine, the city lights casting a warm glow over their path. As they rounded a corner, an establishment came into view. The restaurant exuded an air of elegance and tranquility.

They stepped inside, greeted by the soft murmur of conversation and the inviting aroma of cuisine. A waiter comes to greet them before escorting them through the cozy interior to a beautifully cared for garden area. Tables were scattered throughout the garden, each adorned with fresh romaritime flowers.

Peruere selected a secluded table near a blooming rainbow rose bush, the soft scent of the flowers mingling with the evening air. As they sat down, Aether marveled at the serene beauty of the setting. “This place is incredible,” he said, his voice filled with genuine admiration.

Peruere smiled, pleased with his reaction. “I thought you might appreciate a quieter, more intimate setting for dinner.” She sighs rather fondly, “the garden is particularly lovely this time of year.”

“Do you come by here often?”

“I do, although it is usually alone or if I am handling some diplomatic relations. It is much more pleasant under these circumstances.”

Aether looked around, his eyes as bright as the stars above them. “It’s beautiful...”

“Hello dear guests, thank you for dining at our fine establishment.” The familiar voice came from a waiter approaching with menus, Aether turned to face him… only for his expression to change to pure shock.

“L-Lyney!? W-what are you doing here!?”

The ash-blonde man glances to the side as he passes them the menus, cheekily replying, “‘Lyney’? I am not sure who this ‘Lyney’ you speak of is sir! He does sound like a dashing young debonair though.” He then turns to Peruere, “what would this fine gentlewoman like?”

Aether looks toward Peruere, expecting her to say something about the situation… “Steak Tartare and a Fourth Movement for me, s'il te plaît.” …Only for her to not acknowledge the situation entirely.

“And for the distinguished partner…?”

“…a La Lettre a Focalors and Sunset Latte please…”

“Very well, please excuse me!” And as quickly as ‘Lyney’ appeared, he vanished.

As Aether gives Peruere another glance, she offers him a knowing look and smile. “Believe it or not, I didn’t play any part in this. He’s always been one for theatrics though, so this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. It shouldn’t be a problem, no?”

“Ah, no! I-I was just very surprised to see him here.”

As they waited for their meal, Peruere and Aether continued their conversation under the night sky.

Peruere leaned back slightly, her gaze thoughtful. “So, Aether, tell me more about your travels. I’m curious to hear about your journey across Teyvat.”

Aether’s face lit up as he recounted his adventures, his voice animated and full of emotion. He spoke of the deserts of Sumeru, the grassy plains of Mondstadt, of the many diverse cultures, of friends he had made, and of challenges he had overcome. Peruere listened intently, occasionally interjecting with a question or comment.

Their meal arrived - served by Lynette and Freminet, to Aether’s continued shock - and the two continued to converse as they dined.

As the evening wore on, the conversation flowed seamlessly, the garden’s ambiance providing the perfect backdrop for the atmosphere.

After the meals, the two slowly savored their drinks, neither wanting the evening to end. Peruere looked at Aether, her expression softened by the moon’s gentle light. “I’m glad we had this time together, Aether. It’s been a memorable night.”

Aether smiled warmly, his eyes reflecting the garden’s soft glow. “Me too, Peruere. Thank you for everything, it’s been wonderful.”

“I hope I can add just a bit to said perfection,” and as she says this, she pulls out the hidden bouquet of rainbow roses, each shimmering under the night sky.

Aether’s eyes widen as he sees them, extending his arms so he can take them. “They’re beautiful…” he says, a smile growing on his face as he continues to look at them before looking back at her.

“I’m glad you enjoy them. I will… admit that I was unsure of what time would be appropriate to offer them to you.” The knave replies, in a tone of uncertainty. “I am still quite unfamiliar with these kinds of gestures.”

At the uncharacteristic display from Peruere, he can’t help the soft laughter that escapes him. “With the way you’ve been stealing my heart the entire day, I would have thought you were an expert. Still, thank you so much, Peruere…”

The night air was refreshing as Peruere escorted Aether through the streets of Fontaine, heading towards Hotel Bouffes d'ete. The city was still, and it felt as though they were the only two people that existed at that moment.

As they walked, Peruere glanced at Aether, who was quietly enjoying the serene atmosphere; the rainbow rose bouquet in his arms being held close. She felt a warmth in her chest, a rare feeling quite different from the painful crimson flames that normally coursed through her veins. The evening had been perfect, and she wanted to savor every remaining moment.

“Did you enjoy tonight?” Peruere asked gently, with a touch of curiosity.

Aether looked at her, his eyes sparkling with gratitude. “It was wonderful, Peruere. The opera, the dinner, the garden... Thank you for planning such an amazing evening.”

Peruere smiled, a genuine one that softened her usual stoic demeanor. “I’m glad you enjoyed it, Aether. I admit I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to treat you well enough today.” As they reached the entrance of Hotel Bouffes d'ete, they slowed their pace, reluctant to end the night. They turned to face each other under the warm glow of the nearby lamppost.

Aether hesitated for a moment before speaking, setting the flowers to the side as his voice grew softer. “I feel that you may have spoiled me a little too much.” He said as he laughed, “I had a really great time tonight. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to unwind like today.”

Peruere took a step towards him, her gaze locked onto his. “I felt the same way. You have a way of comforting those around you with your presence… I suppose that’s why the children are so fond of you.”

Aether’s cheeks flushed slightly at her words, and he smiled shyly with bright eyes. “T-thank you Peruere.”

There was a brief silence between them, the air heavy as the two continued to stare into each other. Peruere reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from Aether’s face, her fingers lingering on his cheek. The touch sent a shiver down his spine as he gazed into the red crosses that made up her eyes. Despite the dark inhuman like hand that made its way onto his cheek, he felt no fear. He leaned into her hand, closing his eyes for a moment.

When he opened them, he found her gaze intense and unwavering. “Aether…”

Before she could finish, Aether closed the distance between them, his lips meeting hers in a soft, tender kiss. It was gentle, filled with a multitude of unspoken things. Were they destined for tragedy? Or something greater? Peruere’s arms wrapped around him, pulling him towards her as she deepened the kiss, savoring the sweetness of the moment.

When they finally separated, both were breathless, panting as they rested their foreheads against each other. Peruere’s eyes were gentle, lingering on him as he did the same for her.

Aether smiled, his voice no louder than a whisper. “Thank you for tonight, Peruere. It was unforgettable.”

Peruere took a step back, her hand moving to the cross-shaped earring she wore on her right ear. She carefully removed it and gently placed it on Aether’s right ear. “Here,” she said softly, “take this as a gift. When next we meet, you can return it to me.”

Aether touched the jewelry, feeling the warmth of her gesture. “I will.”

Peruere cupped his face in her hands, her thumb gently caressing his cheek. “The pleasure was mine, Aether. Let’s make sure this isn't just a one-night occasion.”

With one last lingering look, Aether turned and entered the hotel, casting a final glance over his shoulder to see Peruere watching him, a small, content smile on her lips. As the door closed behind him, he felt warmth flooding all over his body as the blush remained on his face.

Tonight truly was an unforgettable night.

“So traveler…” despite that being his name to a majority of Teyvat, Aether - now back in his usual attire - knew that if Paimon was calling him that despite no one else being around, this was serious. “Paimon found out what you were doing yesterday!”

“You weren’t spying on us were you?”

Despite the way Paimon addressed him, Aether was quite surprised to see a lack of any malice on her face. “How rude! Paimon isn’t that shallow!” She angrily crosses her arms and turns away from him.

He can’t help the chuckle that escapes him as he looks at his traveling companion, feeling a bit guilty. “I’m sorry Paimon, I promise that next time you want to eat, we can go wherever you want!”

The eyes of his ever-gluttonous companion turn as wide as saucers, with her immediately bouncing into the air out of her seat. “R-really!? Oooo! Paimon’s so excited! Remember, no takebacks! Not even the knave can stop Paimon from getting her food!”

Aether smiles fondly at the excitement of his friend. Despite how clueless she can come off, she understood him better than most and was with him through thick and thin from the very beginning. “I didn’t expect you to find out about the date between me and the knave though. Were Neuvillette’s sweets not enough to distract you the entire time?”

Paimon scoffs, “Paimon doesn’t like what you’re implying!” But just as quickly as she becomes defensive, she also answers his question. “Also, it’s more like not just Paimon knows about it…”

Aether freezes, “e-excuse me…?”

Paimon puts her stubby arms into her cosmo-filled cape and pulls out a signature Steambird article. “More like the entirety of Fontaine knows about it!” When she pulls it out, Aether immediately snatches it from her hands. The first thing he sees is a picture... of the knave and him sucking face! His eyes scanned the article at a pace unprecedented for him. When he finishes reading it, his eyes look up from the article; staring into space for a few moments.

After those few moments, he pushes his seat back and starts to march away from the table with purpose. He then turns his head to Paimon, with a smile on his face that doesn’t match the ominous aura he is radiating. “Paimon… I’ll be right back.”

“A-Aether? Where are you going!? Paimon doesn’t like that dangerous look in your eyes!”

“…To have a friendly conversation with Charlotte…”

When Charlotte wrote the most exciting article in Steambird history, she was prepared for many things (most primarily, the ire of the knave). What she was not ready to face, was the wrath of the legendary traveler.

“I just want to talk Charlotte!” As she quickly glanced over her shoulders while she ran through one of the many streets of the Court of Fontaine to see the face of the friendly sentence, she could only see the eyes of someone seeking vengeance.

“I’m sorry traveler! The story was just too juicy! Please forgive me!” She could only pray that she would live to continue pursuing her journalistic ambitions.

As Lynette watched the scene unfold in front of her, she only had one thing to say.

“…Idiots…”

She then returned to happily enjoying her ice cream.

“S-shouldn’t we help her Father…?”

As Peruere sipped from her tea, at a nearby table at Café Lutece, she chuckled at the question. “There is no need Freminet, she has dug her own grave, this is not our battle.”

Although Freminet can’t help but feel a little guilty at the plight his friend has found herself in, he can’t help but agree with Father’s statement. “I am a bit surprised at how she found out so many details about the date,” he says, pulling out the Steambird’s most popular article as of yet. “It almost reads like an entire recounting of the event from one of its attendees than a scoop.” It was at that moment that everything clicked into place in Freminet’s mind, “Father… you aren’t responsible for this, are you?”

Peruere gives him an innocent smile, “where do you think such an extensive anonymous tip could’ve come from?”

“…you ARE cold-blooded Father…”

The knave’s eyes return to the beautiful thing angrily chasing the reporter on the streets. “You make it sound as if I did this out of malevolent intent… “ She can’t help but sigh lovingly, “I merely wish for the world to know what’s mine.”

“I know not of this handsome waiter you speak of, but he must’ve been quite the honorable fellow if you remember him so fondly!”

Aether could only sigh at the way Lyney continued to avoid the question, accepting that he wouldn’t get anything else out of him. “…Regardless, thank you for serving us last night.”

Lyney offered him a beaming smile as he replied. “I’m not sure why you keep speaking as though this dashing waiter and I are the same person… but I’ll make sure to work some of my magic and pass along your gratitude to him.” Aether returns a smile to him as he says this. “By the way, I wanted to thank you.”

Aether’s expression shifts to confusion at his words, “what for?”

“Why, for capturing Father’s heart of course! I haven’t seen her so enraptured in something in a while besides the Prophecy, and I know I can trust you to not break Father’s heart… actually, maybe I should be more worried about things happening the other way around. I-I don't think you have to worry about that though."

"I'm sure everything will be alright Lyney, I trust your Father."

They stare at each other for a few moments longer before they both break into laughter, Lyney’s laughter though was then cut off, a question he hadn’t considered making its way into his head.

“Does this mean that you’re my ‘Mother’ now?”

Notes:

While I was writing this chapter, I lost a good chunk of it because my device died. This version you are seeing now is fueled by pure unbridled rage and copious amounts of fluff.

No matter how many times I redo certain parts of this chapter or work on it, I’ll never be satisfied with it. I even feel tempted to redo this entire thing. Regardless, it’s finally here! There are a lot of details and references in this chapter and I’m curious how many people will notice them, there are a few things I will address in these notes though.

First of all: thank you Traines for the idea for this fic! I had a ton of fun writing this!

Aether’s design: This… this right here is why this took so long. I could figure everything out for this chapter besides how I wanted him to look. I love dress Aether, but I also think he looks quite cute in a suit. Eventually it got to the point where I took a previous comment I made quite literally and gave him a suit-dress. I also based a lot of his design on the Khaenri'ah color scheme (Dainsleif, Pierro, and fan-art of the Abyss Sibling). The design is also based off of stars (obviously) because of the twins’ connection to stars. A few suggestions helped me nail down certain parts of it so thank you to the two commenters who dropped some suggestions. I’m honestly still not satisfied with the final product and have redone it countless times, at the very least, I hope it doesn’t come across as needlessly complex.

Inteyvat: If you are confused about how Aether got an inteyvat, it’s the same one he found in the Chasm when he experienced one of Lumine’s memories. He kept it because it reminded him of his sister.

Sacré sept patriarches: I don’t plan on explaining all the French here, but I did want to explain this phrase from Arlecchino at the very beginning. From what information I could find, the Archons are referred to as the Patriarchs in the French translation. Thus, instead of using the French word for Archons, I used that. The entire phrase should translate to ‘sacred seven archons’ (ignoring the fact that it would be patriarchs in this case). This is my way of making Arlecchino say ‘oh my god’.

French: Not a note, but to any French readers (I know I have one here), I am so sorry if I got anything wrong. If it isn’t obvious, I don’t know French, but I did my best to try and not make any horrendous translations. You can point anything out to me and I am more than happy to make changes.

Restaurant: If you are wondering why it has no name, I simply couldn’t come up with a name. Sorry for the disappointing answer, but if anyone has any good names I can rob, please do tell!

Lyney: Although I love all the siblings, I will admit that Lyney got a bigger spotlight here. But in my defense, he was perfect for this fic. Honestly, Lynette probably got shafted the hardest considering how she does not work as well for the story and I didn’t have the twins connected by the hip. Regardless, I love them all equally, I promise!

An additional chapter?: I’m not sure if I have plans to extend this fic any further. There were definitely a lot of ideas that I didn’t end up using, but at that point I could just turn it into another fic. There is however a good chance that I return to chapter 1 and revamp the entire thing as I felt I got a better grasp with writing as the fic went on. If any of you have suggestions for new fics or somehow want to try and convince me to continue this fic, go right ahead!

Notes:

By the way, if anyone would like to make any suggestions for Aether’s outfit, I’m more than willing to accept them! It’s actually one of the parts of this story I haven’t decided on and you can be as specific as you’d like. Next chapter will actually have ‘Father’ taking ‘Mother’ on a date.

As always, any criticisms are appreciated and any errors I made are open for calling out!
