Chapter Text
“When was the last time you had a decent sleep?”
Asami’s voice makes Korra jump. She wasn’t expecting to hear her.
Ever since she’s arrived in Republic City, Korra hasn’t been able to sleep at night. Although they aren’t in Republic City anymore, being in the middle of nowhere on the way to save people from an evil (yet hot) dictator isn’t much more comforting.
”Shit, you scared me.”
Korra mumbles to Asami. Asami sits across from her at the table.
“Sorry. But seriously, Korra. What’s going on with you? I feel like you’ve been…dishonest with me. I care about you. You can talk to me.”
Korra should feel comfort at Asami’s words. Asami is purely speaking from care and honesty, out of affection.
”Can you stop asking me that? If I’m okay?”
Korra responds. She becomes more defensive, speaking more harsh than before.
“Because clearly I’m doing just fine. Y’know, was almost killed several times! I’m fine! I’m fine! But you know, it’s funny. It’s like, I’m the Avatar. But I was gone, I just…disappeared for three years. How stupid is that? That I couldn’t even…do what I’m supposed to?”
Korra rambles. Nothing that she’s saying is really making any sense, but she’s being….vulnerable. Something that Asami doesn’t mention. Asami just sits there, listening. She tries her hardest to be understanding, even though she doesn’t really understand what Korra is trying to say.
“Look at me, Korra. I know you’re doing your best, and I’m proud of you.”
“BUT MY BEST ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!”
Asami doesn’t expect Korra to raise her voice. Sure, Korra can be a bit hot-headed at times, but never at Asami.
“Listen to yourself! You sound like a fool! Your best is more than enough!”
Asami’s voice sounds just as emotional as Korra’s does.
Voices are raised, words are thrown, and a few tears are shed.
“You’re just being selfish at this point!”
Asami ends up responding to one of the many thinks Korra ends up saying.
It catches both Korra and Asami off guard.
“Fuck, I didn’t mean that,”
”Really? Because it would have been really funny if you did.”
”Korra, I-“
”Save it. I don’t need your pity.”
”I’m not giving you pity! Here’s a shocker, I care about you!”
As Asami speaks, Korra seems a bit shocked at her words. Really? Asami caring about Korra? It doesn’t even seem to crazy. It makes sense. But for some reason, it doesn’t fully click in Korra’s head. Somebody caring about her seems so…unnecessary. She’s the Avatar, she should be caring about others.
”But…why?”
Korra’s voice breaks a bit. Her words tug at Asami’s heart.
“Because…because you’re Korra. You’re so stubborn, you know that?”
Asami chuckles a bit, smiling softly.
Korra doesn’t have the same reaction. She turns around and leaves Asami, as if regretting the whole conversation.
Korra wonders to herself, why some part of her wants to continue fighting with Asami. Why she wants to hear Asami tell her how stubborn she is, how shitty she’s talking about herself, how much she matters.
There’s some part of her subconscious that’s blocking her consciousness from realizing that she’s falling for Asami.
That she’s been falling for her.
