Chapter Text

Sally stood at the top of Taflin Pass, in front of the Wheel Well. Her favorite spot, where she could view the town, Route 66, and the interstate, was where she could find comfort. She sighed, turned around from the Wheel Well, and sat on a log at the edge. She hugged her knees, as the wind rustled above her.

Who am I even kidding, that man isn’t coming back.

Sally started pulling dandelions from the ground, braiding them together.

I would’ve been told something if he was, right?

One stem over the other. One stem over the other.

I hate everything about this. I hate him for even coming here in the first place.

Add another flower.

Does he really care? Would he even bother to come back? Probably not.

Repeat.

Sally continued braiding the dandelions together and speaking to herself in her thoughts. She finally let go of them and pulled out another fresh batch of flowers to create another one. As she was distracted, Sally started hearing a car coming. The motor was strong.

The damn heat is getting to me.

Sally sat there in silence, as the motor was getting closer. She for some reason started to panic. It was rare for people to pass on that roadway. Before the car could confirm her assumptions, she squinted her eyes and looked down below at the town - a trailer.

Sally’s heart raced, and before she could let out her emotions, the mysterious car parked alongside the road. She turned her head around and realized who the person was. She quickly stood up, as the Lightning was making his way out of his car.

“I knew you’d be here.” He gently smiled.

Sally returned a small smile, “How so?”

“When I didn’t see you back there, and in the Cone, I realized you were probably up here.”

Sally nodded, “Are you just…passing through?”

“Actually, I thought I'd stop and stay awhile. I hear this place is back on the map.”

“It is?”

Lightning laughed, “Yeah, there's some rumor floating around that some hotshot Piston Cup racecar is setting up his big racing headquarters here.”

“Really?” Sally smiled, as Lightning nodded. She then composed herself, trying not to sound too excited. “Ah, well, there goes the town.”
Lightning walked towards her, extending his hands out. Sally smiled and placed her hands on top of his. His hands were surprisingly soft and warm. He gently rubbed the knuckles of her hand with his thumb.

“You know…I really missed you, Sally.” He said quietly. “I’m really really glad I got lost.”

Sally laughed.

Hesitantly, Lightning spoke again, “I want to stay here, with you. I really don’t want to leave again.”

With no other words, Sally smiled and hugged him. He embraced her tightly, as they both rocked side to side gently. Sally whispered into his ear, trying to contain her smile.

“I missed you as well.”

Sally let go of the hug and stared at Lightning’s dark blue eyes. His eyes were like the ocean being put in one capsule. She had not seen eyes that blue. As they both stared at each other and gave the occasional chuckle, Sally could feel Lightning leaning in closer. She sucked in her breath slowly and looked down at his lips. With hesitance, she gently brought her hand down to his cheek. Before their lips could meet, they both got interrupted by the sound of a helicopter - and Mater.

“McQueen and Sally parked beneath the tree. K-I-S-S...uhh... I-N-G!”

Mcqueen laughed, “ Great timing, Mater!”

Both of them stood there laughing as Mater was whipped away by the helicopter. Sally was happy that Lightning had stuck with his promise and granted Mater a helicopter ride. Lightning turned to face her, arm wrapped around her shoulder.

“He's my best friend. What're you gonna do?”

Sally smiled, grabbing his hand and taking his arm off gently, “ So, Stickers. Last one to Flo's buys?” She then walked off to her car, swinging her key on her finger.

“I don't know. Why don't we just take a drive?”

She smirked. Sally sat down in her car and turned the engine on. Lightning got the hint, and turned his car on as well. Sally lowered her window down and smiled at Lightning.

“Let’s see if you can actually drive as fast as you seem to do.” She then pressed the gas pedal and drove outside into the road.

Although knowing the streets were indeed not race tracks, Lightning smiled and gave in to Sall's small race. He then quickly drove behind her, following her through the amazing scenery of Radiator Springs and its surroundings.
