A Hero's Second Chance

Chapter 4: Unseen Shadows and Unexpected Allies

Chapter Text

Lately, Izuku had been noticeably more energetic and cheerful. He’d been sneaking off to train with All Might, not realizing that we know about it. He keeps coming up with excuses for why he can't train with us for the upcoming U.A. exam.

I've been feeling so anxious because not passing this exam could impact wether or not I can prevent things that has happened in canon. On top of that, I'm worried about accidentally letting my urges get the best of me and injuring someone.

Not if it's bakugou tho fuck that bitch but even then the thought of that happening is so embarrassing I would literally kms.

either way I shouldn't be worrying about allat rn I needa get some bandages bc my clumsy ass be hurting myself all the time

timeskip: in the shop in the like aisle looking for bandages

"Bandages, bandages, bandages," I kept muttering to myself as I reached for them, but before I could grab them, another hand swiftly intervened and got them before me.

"Hey, you literally saw me—" I started to say, but I was immediately cut off when I looked up and met a pair of turquoise eyes staring back at me.

Fuck this stupid ass show

"You're that bitch, right?" Dabi—or rather, Touya—asked as I took off running before he could finish his sentence. I heard his footsteps quickly closing in on me. I kept running, probably farther than I ever have before. "What do I do? What do I do?" I thought frantically. "AREN'T YOU HAPPY TO SEE ME, PRINCESS?" Dabi's manic laughter rang out behind me. "If you stop running, I promise I'll make your death less painful," he shouted.

less painful death my ass

I ran for my fucking life

I kept running until I accidentally ran into a wall that was surprisingly soft. Instinctively, I grabbed onto it, puzzled by why it was soft. I gave it a squeeze, only to hear a voice say, "What do you think you're doing? Let go immediately."

As I looked up at Overhaul, my heart sank. The realization that I had inadvertently grabbed onto one of the most dangerous villains imaginable did little to ease my panic. Just then, I heard the echoing sound of heavy footsteps getting closer. Dabi's maniacal laughter grew louder, and my dread intensified.

Overhaul's eyes narrowed as he saw Dabi approaching. "Let go of me you dirty freak" he said coldly, his tone dripping with disdain.

Before I could apologise, Dabi came into view, his flame-like Quirk blazing. His eyes locked onto me and Overhaul, and a wicked grin spread across his face. "Well, what do we have here?" Dabi taunted, his voice laced with malice. "Looks like you've made a new friend."

Panic surged through me as Dabi closed in, the heat from his flames making the air shimmer. Overhaul's gaze remained calm and calculating, but there was a cold intensity in his eyes.

For some reason, in that moment, Overhaul felt an urgent need to protect you. He wasn't sure why, but the sense of urgency was undeniable.

"Step away from her," Overhaul commanded, his voice authoritative and unwavering. "You have no business here."

Dabi's grin widened, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his eyes as he assessed Overhaul. "And why should I listen to you?" Dabi challenged, his flames flaring up.

Overhaul's eyes gleamed with a dangerous edge. "Because if you don't, you'll find that dealing with me is far more problematic than whatever you have planned for her."

The standoff was palpable. Overhaul's presence exuded an aura of control that made Dabi hesitate. After a moment of tense silence, Dabi's grin faltered. "Fine," he sneered, his frustration evident. "I'll leave you to your little game. But don't think this is over."

As Dabi's footsteps faded, I let out a shaky breath, trying to calm my racing heart. Overhaul's gaze was still fixed on me, his expression a mix of irritation and calculated detachment.

"I'll walk you home," Overhaul said abruptly, his voice leaving no room for argument. "I'm not leaving you alone after this."

I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off with a sharp look. "No objections. It's too dangerous for you to be on your own right now."

"Aww, thanks, bae," I said. He narrowed his eyes at me, a mix of confusion and slight disgust on his face. "What did you say?" he asked, his tone warning me.

I hesitated, then blurted out, "I mean't I still need to get the bandages I was buying."

'I guess we aren't having everyone fall in love with us' I thought to myself

Overhaul's expression softened just slightly, though it remained stern. "Very well. Lead the way."

I quickly guided him back to the shop, feeling a bit awkward but grateful for him saving me from Dabi's crazy ass. We entered the store together, and I grabbed the bandages I'd been trying to reach earlier. Overhaul watched with a disinterested but protective air as I made my purchase.

Once I had the bandages in hand, we left the shop together. Overhaul walked beside me, his presence both reassuring and intimidating. The streets felt quieter with him by my side, his imposing figure a stark contrast to the usual bustle.

As we approached my home, Overhaul's expression remained unreadable. He didn't speak much, only occasionally casting a wary glance around as if assessing potential threats. Finally, we reached my front door.

"Here we are," I said, turning to face him. "Thanks for... you know, helping me out."

Overhaul gave a slight nod, his gaze flicking to me briefly. "Be more careful in the future."

Before I could respond, Overhaul pulled out a notepad from his pocket, scribbling something down quickly. I didn't notice what he wrote, as I was too focused on him leaving. He put the notepad away and turned to leave.

As he walked away, I noticed he didn't look back. I entered my home, feeling a mix of relief and confusion over the encounter.

Unbeknownst to me, Overhaul had written down my address in his notepad, his mind already working on future plans.

Timeskip to UA exams

Today was the day I'd finally get to try for the U.A. exams. Izuku was by my side, trembling with nerves. I reassured him by placing a hand on his shoulder and saying, "It's okay, you'll get in." His expression softened, and he seemed to relax a bit. Just a few minutes earlier, he'd mentioned that he had a new quirk and guessed he was just a late bloomer.

Late bloomer my ass but whatever

As we walked through the gates, an irritating, agitating sound came from behind us. "Move out of my way, Deku," Bakugou snarled.

"He wasn't even in your way," I replied.

"Nobody was talking to you, vampire bitch," Bakugou sneered.

I chose to ignore him, not letting him bother me. It seemed like Izuku was feeling nervous again. "Don't mind him; it's going to be alright," I said to Izuku.

"You're right, everything will be alright. So let's get going," Izuku replied. He then immediately tripped over his own foot.

Before Izuku could face-plant, a pair of hands touched his back, and he started floating mid-air. As Izuku panicked and tried to run in the air, I turned to see the girl responsible. The moment I saw her quirk in action, I recognized her as Uraraka Ochaco.

I turned to her, awestruck. "Omg, you have such a cool quirk," I said.

Her face immediately flushed bright red. "U-uh, it's nothing really. You must have a nice quirk too!" she stammered.

I chuckled and looked back at the panicking Izuku floating in the air. I grabbed him by the back of his collar to steady him. Uraraka ended her quirk and, with a hint of guilt, said to Izuku, "I didn't think using my quirk would startle you. I'm so sorry," and gave him a slight bow.

"S-so close!" Izuku muttered under his breath.

"Huh?" Uraraka replied, confused.

"O-oh no, I mean, yeah, it's okay! Thanks," Izuku said, his face still a bit flushed.

I laughed at the interaction, "Come on, Izuku, let's not be late."

"Y-yeah, let's go!" he replied, still a bit red in the face.

We entered the auditorium and found seats positioned right in the middle, not too close to the front or the back. I was seated between Izuku and Bakugou.

Present Mic took to the stage and grabbed the mic. "What's up, UA candidates!" he boomed. "Thanks for tuning in to your school DJ!" He paused for effect, then shouted, "Everybody say 'hey!'"

I kept my mouth shut since I knew aint nobody was gonna say 'hey'

"That's cold. For the examinees out there, let me give you a quick rundown of the practical exam," Present Mic said. "Are you ready?!" he yelled, but the response was an eerie silence.

I could hear Izuku muttering next to me, and as much as I liked him, he needed to keep it down. Before I could say anything, Bakugou beat me to it. "Shut it."

"As the application says," Present Mic continued, "you'll participate in a ten-minute mock battle in the city." The screen behind him lit up with a set of letters. "Bring anything you like. After this, head to your assigned practice center."

We all glanced down at our cards, and Bakugou peeked at mine before commenting, "So they're not letting friends work together, huh?"

Izuku nodded and said, "Yeah, we have consecutive numbers but different practice centers."

"If you look, you die," Bakugou growled, tossing his card face down.

"Dramatic ass," I muttered, but Bakugou just huffed in response.

"Tch, I can't crush both of you," Bakugou muttered under his breath. The screen at the front displayed a cityscape of buildings.

"At each practice center, there will be three types of virtual villains," Present Mic announced. "You'll earn points based on their levels. Use your individual quirks to defeat them and rack up points. And remember, don't harm others or engage in any anti-hero behavior."

Just then, a guy with glasses stood up, and I recognized him as Tenya Iida. "May I ask a question?" he called out, his voice carrying clearly through the auditorium.

"Sure," Present Mic replied.

Iida continued, "On this printout, there are four villain types. If it's a misprint, it would reflect poorly on Japan's top school. We examinees are here to be taught by exemplary heroes. And you, curly-haired boy!"

Izuku, startled, pointed at himself in confusion. "Me?"

Iida, clearly frustrated, snapped, "Your constant muttering is disruptive! If you're here for fun, you should leave now."

Izuku quickly placed a hand over his mouth, visibly embarrassed, and whispered a meek apology. I couldn't help but giggle a little. But then, Iida's gaze turned to me. "You as well. If you're going to be careless and unfocused, you should leave as well."

Baffled, I shot back, "Sit your ass down; nobody cares."

Iida gasped in shock and, after a moment of stunned silence, reluctantly sat back down muttering a few words about unhero like behaviour.

"Okay, okay, examinee number 7111, thanks for the feedback," Present Mic said, clearly amused. "The fourth type is worth zero points. They're just outcasts."

The screen then showed a mini Present Mic navigating through the exam area and approaching one of the robots, only to quickly retreat. "These guys are just gimmicks meant to cause trouble throughout each center. You can destroy them, but there's no point. To everyone here, I advise you to avoid these nuisances."

"I see it's a stage gimmick you have to avoid"

"it's like a video game"

"seems easy"

"That's it for now," Present Mic concluded. "Finally, let me leave you with our school motto. As the hero Napoleon Bonaparte once said, 'True heroism consists in being superior to the ills of life.' Remember, go above and beyond—PLUS ULTRA!"

He flashed a final grin. "So, I wish you all the best."

time skip, practice center

As soon as the gates opened, you dashed through without waiting for a countdown, recalling that in the canon scenario, waiting wasn't the way to go.

The other students hesitated, debating whether to follow your lead. But their indecision was quickly interrupted when Present Mic's voice boomed over the loudspeakers. "What's wrong? Life doesn't have countdowns! Run, run, run!"

That was all the encouragement they needed. With a rush of movement, the students surged forward, sprinting into the cityscape of their practice centers.

With a surge of super speed, Y/N darted forward, a blur of motion. She attacked the nearest robot with precision, her enhanced strength crumpling it in a single strike. Her movements were a symphony of efficiency, each action calculated and precise. She dismantled robot after robot, her senses sharp as a predator's, allowing her to anticipate and react to every threat.

Just as Y/N was in the midst of dismantling a particularly large robot, Monoma Shinso, another exam participant, made his entrance. He watched her from a distance, a smirk playing on his lips as he observed her formidable abilities. Monoma decided to make his move, his Quirk, "Copy," allowing him to temporarily copy her abilities. Monoma's touch had triggered something deeper within her—an overwhelming urge heightened by the sight of a thin scratch on his cheek that had drawn a small line of blood.

Monoma, eager to showcase his newfound abilities, glanced at Y/N with a smirk. "Quite the impressive display, isn't it? I must say, I'm enjoying these powers. It's not every day I get to experience them firsthand."

Unaware of Y/N's inner turmoil, Monoma demonstrated his temporary new abilities with exaggerated flair. He dashed around with her super speed, delivered powerful blows with her strength, and tested his enhanced senses. Despite his showmanship, he was unaware of the primal effect the sight of his blood had on Y/N.

As Monoma continued to flaunt the Quirks he had copied, Y/N struggled to keep her composure. The sight of blood on his face triggered her instincts, pushing her focus to an almost unbearable level. Her eyes, now sharp and intense, locked onto Monoma, her thoughts a whirl of fascination and primal hunger.

Monoma, oblivious to the effect his blood was having on her, assumed Y/N was merely impressed by his ability to mimic her Quirk. "Impressed by my skill, are you?" he asked casually, a confident smirk on his face. "It's all in a day's work."

Despite the internal battle raging within her, Y/N managed to regain control and refocus. She wasn't going to let a repeat of her previous lapse with Bakugou occur. With a final, decisive strike, she took down the remaining robots with precision.

Monoma observed from a distance, still unaware of the deeper impact his blood had on Y/N. As she caught her breath, her thoughts were still racing. The brief encounter with Monoma had tested her control over her vampire instincts, but she remained steadfast. The sight of his blood had awakened something primal within her, yet she had managed to push past it and complete the exam.

Before in the staff room

In the staff room, the teachers watched the exam unfold on the large screens, each one observing the students' performances closely. The room was filled with the occasional murmur and comments about the examinees' abilities and strategies.

"Looks like some of the students are really stepping up their game," Aizawa remarked, his eyes fixed on the screen showing L/n's progress.

Present Mic nodded in agreement. "Yeah, she's got some impressive moves. Quite a few are handling their Quirks really well today."

The cameras captured L/n as she finished dismantling the last of the robots, her focus sharp and determined. The teachers continued to discuss various students' performances, seemingly unaware of any unusual behavior.

"Did you see that?" Sekijiro Kan (Vlad King) said, pointing to a particularly impressive maneuver by another examinee. "That kid's got some serious skill."

However, Nezu, the enigmatic principal of UA, watched L/n with an unusual intensity. His sharp, perceptive eyes were fixed on the screen displaying her recent encounter with Monoma. Nezu's expression was one of deep concentration as he observed L/n's interactions and reactions.

"Ahem," Nezu cleared his throat, drawing the attention of the other staff members. "I'm noticing something unusual about examinee L/n."

The teachers turned their attention to the screen showing L/n's face, noting the blood on Monoma and her reaction.

"What do you mean?" Aizawa asked, his gaze shifting from the screen to Nezu.

"There's a subtle shift in L/n's behavior," Nezu explained, his voice measured. "It's not overt, but there's a heightened sense of focus and intensity, particularly when she sees blood. Her reaction is more than just an emotional response; it seems to be tied to something deeper."

Present Mic looked at Nezu with curiosity. "You think it's something to be concerned about?"

Nezu nodded slowly. "It's worth keeping an eye on. It's possible that L/n's Quirk might have some additional facets or instincts that are not immediately apparent. Her control is impressive, but the primal reaction we're seeing could indicate underlying challenges."

The rest of the staff exchanged glances, their interest piqued. They had been so focused on the more obvious displays of Quirk prowess that L/n's subtle change in behavior had gone unnoticed.

"I'll make a note to monitor her more closely," Nezu continued. "We need to ensure that she's not only aware of her strengths but also of any potential weaknesses or instincts that could impact her performance and might endanger others."

-------------------------------------

After the exam was over, you and Izuku were walking home together. He seemed a bit off, and you could tell something was bothering him.

"Are you alright? You seem quiet," you asked, trying to gauge his mood.

"Huh? Oh, um, yeah, I guess," Izuku said, glancing down. "I actually didn't do well in the exam..."

You had a feeling he might say that, but you acted surprised anyway. "Whaaat? I can't believe that! What happened?"

"I only managed to take down one robot, and it was the zero-point one," Izuku explained, his voice full of frustration.

"Why'd you go for that one?" you asked.

"There was a girl trapped under some rubble," Izuku said, his eyes full of regret. "The robot was about to crush her, so I used my Quirk to stop it. But I ended up breaking my arm and legs in the process, and I couldn't continue any longer..."

You put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Izuku, listen. UA is a hero school. I'm sure they saw what you were trying to do, saving Uraraka like that. They must have some way of considering that. I'm sure there's still a chance for you."

Izuku took your hand off his shoulder and looked at you with a puzzled expression. "I didn't tell you her name?"

Realizing you had messed up, you scrambled to cover your tracks. "Oh, right! I remember from this morning, you know, when she used her Quirk on you and stuff. Hahahah, yeah."

Izuku's suspicion grew, and he seemed even more uneasy. "I didn't say it was Uraraka. How did you know it was her?"

"Lucky guess?" you replied with a weak shrug.

Izuku gave a hesitant "oh" and let out a nervous chuckle, still looking a bit suspicious but ultimately choosing to brush it off. As his friend, he decided to let it slide, though you could tell he was still slightly wary.

Not wanting to drag the conversation any further and sensing the lingering tension, you quickly decided to make an excuse to end the conversation.

"Hey, I just remembered I have something I need to take care of at home," you said, trying to sound casual. "I should get going. See you later, okay?"

Izuku didn't seem entirely convinced, but he gave you a small nod. "Alright, see you later."

You said your goodbyes and, with a final wave, hurried off towards home. As you walked away, you could feel Izuku's puzzled gaze on your back, but you pushed it out of your mind. The important thing was getting away from the uncomfortable situation, even if it meant leaving a bit of unease behind.

As you walked home, you couldn't shake the feeling that someone was following you. The quiet streets seemed unnervingly empty, and every now and then, you would catch a glimpse of movement from the corner of your eye. Your heart began to race, and you quickened your pace, glancing over your shoulder every few moments.

Each time you turned around, though, the street behind you remained empty. There was no sign of anyone, just the distant hum of city sounds and the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze.

You stopped and took a deep breath, trying to calm yourself. "It's just my imagination," you muttered, trying to reassure yourself. "I'm probably just freaking out for no reason."

You straightened up and continued walking, making an effort to strut confidently. With each step, you forced yourself to relax and dismiss the unease that had been building. The tension from earlier with Izuku felt like it had gotten to your head.

As you walked with a renewed sense of composure, you glanced behind you one last time. The street was still empty, just as it had been before. Feeling a bit silly for letting your nerves get the best of you, you chuckled softly to yourself.

"See? Nothing to worry about," you said aloud, shaking your head. "Just a case of overthinking."

With a light-hearted sigh, you continued on your way home, the uneasy feeling slowly fading as you focused on the familiar sights of your route. What you didn't notice, however, was the shadowy figure lurking in the alleyways, keeping a careful watch as you walked by.

The figure remained hidden, blending seamlessly with the darkness of the narrow alley. Only their eyes, glinting with a hint of curiosity, were visible as they observed your every move. The quiet, stealthy presence followed your progress from a distance, waiting patiently for the right moment to reveal themselves.

Unaware of the eyes tracking your every step, you remained lost in your own thoughts, reassured by the calm of the evening and the routine of your journey home.

"Close friend Midoriya Izuku: potential One for all user"

"mhm anything else?"

"She completed the UA practical exams today but I have no doubt she got in"
