Chapter Text
Namjoon was sure walking was humanity's oldest form of torture.
He was also sure the heat currently bearing down on him came a close second.
Walking silently as the sun burned bright over the edge of the horizon far ahead of him, Namjoon moved as their horse trotted quietly beside him. Saddle around the horse's middle now hanging undone, Namjoon walked along as he slowly made his way down a narrow and winding path.
He doesn't know how long they’ve walked since they'd left town, nor does he know how much longer they had left to go to wherever the royal was leading them too. What Namjoon did know though was this hadn't been what he’d expected when he’d woken up that morning.
But really, who would in the first place?
Lips pulling downward, Namjoon thought back to what had happened only hours before; the crowd of people who had been ready to throw him into a deep pit staring after him seemingly burned into the back of his mind as he moved slowly through the forest.
He didn't know how long the crowd had watched after them nor how long his back had burned with the weight of their glares but Namjoon was sure he’d never feel them again and with that, Namjoon believed it would suffice.
Cheeks suddenly flushing red as he glanced at the Alpha walking quietly before him, Namjoon felt a warmth spread through his chest as he realized that the royal had without a doubt saved his life.
And gods, how could Namjoon ever be able to repay such a debt?
It was a question that kept nagging him the longer they walked along the small road the royal had brought them to after his rescue; their horse pushed to its limit after its already long journey. Trotting slowly behind them as it huffed and swung its tail lazily under the afternoon sun, Namjoon felt a smile tug at his lips; the animal’s endurance spurring on his own as he picked up his pace to catch up to the royal walking comfortably ahead.
Staying in pace with each other as the sun bore down on them, Namjoon walked as his mind grew full of things unsaid; his eyes never leaving the Alpha’s frame as they moved through the trees with ease.
It’s only later when the sun starts to hang low on the horizon that Namjoon feels his brows furrow as he contemplates breaking the lazy silence hanging between them; his lips aching to part and call for the Alpha to wait the longer they walked along the broken path.
Only try as he might, Namjoon found it a hard thing to do.
Thankfully, to his surprise, the Alpha does it for him.
“Say, let's take a quick rest, we're almost there anyway,” the Alpha huffed out once he came to a halt, his hand rising from his side to gesture for Namjoon to stop at the end of the path beside him. Face growing stern as he turned Namjoon's way, the Alpha took a second to bask in the warm golden light now washing over them both.
Blinking quickly as if to rip himself out of the haze, Namjoon nodded slowly as he followed the Alpha's lead; the words he’d been ready to say now nowhere to be found as the Alpha waited for an answer. Licking his lips as he took a small step forward, Namjoon cleared his throat as he found the courage to speak to the man who had so boldly come to his aid.
Or well…he tried to anyway.
“I-I..yes, a break…a break would do us some good sir,” Namjoon uttered as the words struggled to form on his lips, his voice shaky and full of nerves once the Alpha tilted his head and arched a brow in his direction.
“Sir? Why the formalities? Surely after today, we could leave those behind, right?” the Alpha huffed as he moved to rest his hands on his hips, a lopsided smile pulling at his lips as Namjoon was taken by surprise.
Eyes growing wide as his head snapped up to meet the Alpha’s waiting gaze, Namjoon gulped as he mulled the Alpha’s words over. Was it even possible? Could he address an Alpha, much less a royal, so freely?
Quickly noting the hesitation behind the Omega's eyes, the Alpha stepped forward and shone a wider smile Namjoon’s way.
“Had you expected to hear something different, Omega? Did you assume I’d make you bow and call me ‘Your Highness’ every step of the way?” the Alpha huffed, a teasing tone seeping into his voice; the Alpha slowly coming closer as a sudden blush rose to Namjoon’s cheeks. Shame coursing through him like wildfire, Namjoon ducked his head as he nodded; his eyes falling towards the ground as he watched the Alpha come near.
“Y-yes, more or less,” Namjoon managed to spit out, his voice low but able to be heard clearly between the both of them.
And honestly, it was exactly what Namjoon had expected. He couldn't have helped it even if he tried, not after living in a small village and hearing day in and day out just how royals could be whenever they made their demands or once in a blue moon rode into town.
It was instinctive. The judgment and assumptions coming to him were as easy as breathing.
Brows growing furrowed as he slowly blinked past the shame, Namjoon wondered just how different he was from the rest of the town he had just run away from.
As if reading his mind, the Alpha stepped in to answer the question for him.
“Don't feel too bad. The reputation comes with the crown, I guess. A shame it's quite a convincing one,” the Alpha said with a bitter laugh at the end; his voice light but tinged with something Namjoon couldn't pinpoint.
Lips pulling into a frown yet growing bold enough to glance up at the Alpha, Namjoon eyed the man and began to wonder just what kind of a royal he had standing before him.
The Alpha was a bit… different and in truth, wasn't the least bit pompous, condescending, or belittling towards Namjoon even with their drastic differences in status. Rather, the Alpha was kind and sincere; his kindness like a breath of fresh air after everything Namjoon had been through before. Eyeing the Alpha closely and judging by the lengths of his generosity, Namjoon was sure to say the royal standing before him was nothing like the rest.
Or well, the Omega hoped so anyway.
“I….I'm sorry….for judging you. It was wrong of me to do so, considering what you’ve done for me…” Namjoon fumbled out before he could really think things through; his apology abrupt and sincere as it took him and the Alpha by surprise.
Head snapping up in Namjoon's direction, the Alpha stared as if confused; his expression unreadable as he mulled over the Omega's words. Fidgeting under the other’s intense glare, Namjoon could only gulp as his mouth went dry; the heat behind the Alpha’s gaze sending a shiver right down the Omega’s spine. For a brief second, Namjoon worried if he'd offended or angered the Alpha; a fear he hadn't felt since leaving the town flaring up inside him in a blink of an eye.
But just as fast as it had appeared, the look was gone in an instant; a small smile soon spreading over the Alpha’s features as he quickly looked away.
“Alright then, You're forgiven. Now let's get going, it's not safe to stay on the road,” he hummed after a brief pause, the Alpha not waiting for Namjoon's response as he turned on his heel to resume walking down the path. Mouth dry as his lips parted slightly in surprise, Namjoon watched as the Alpha walked away quietly; his brows furrowing in confusion as he wondered what had just happened between them.
But try as he might, Namjoon could only stay silent as he failed to get an answer; his shoulders sagging in resignation as he took a deep breath before falling back in step behind the Alpha for the second time that day.
And so that's how the pair spent the next couple of minutes together; a silence growing between them the longer they trekked down the road in tandem. It was only when the sky started to deepen and turn a deep shade of orange that Namjoon found himself coming to a sudden stop; the Alpha before him stopping abruptly before turning on his heel and gesturing for Namjoon to do the same.
Blinking in surprise when the Alpha moved past him, Namjoon had no choice but to turn and follow.
“We should continue on horseback before the day grows longer. I have a safe house a half day’s ride from here. If we hurry and get there before nightfall, I can arrange to drop you off at the nearest town. Wouldn't want to leave you out here after dark, lest the roads be unsafe even for a fighter like yourself,” the Alpha chuckled as he made his way towards his horse, his hands already reaching out to secure the saddle back into place and tighten the reins.
Eyes going wide, Namjoon fidgeted where he stood watching the royal work quickly with his hands; the saddle back in place in record time as the Alpha tsked before rising to stand on his feet again.
Biting back a groan, Namjoon felt dread sink in his gut like a stone; his scent threatening to sour as he shifted from one foot to the other. You see, for a reason he couldn't defend, Namjoon had foolishly assumed he‘d be joining the Alpha on the rest of his journey and hadn't really given himself the time to think about what he’d do if the Alpha had said otherwise.
Now standing awkwardly as the Alpha worked in silence, Namjoon could only blame himself for being so presumptuous.
But really, who was he to assume so much from an Alpha he barely even knew?
Mouth forming into a thin line, Namjoon felt his heartbeat quicken as he all but raced through the options he had left.
He tried not to linger on just how little he had to choose from if none at all.
Taking a deep breath, Namjoon paused for a brief second as an idea slowly began to form in his mind. Eyeing the Alpha before him closely, Namjoon sighed as he realized what it was he would have to do.
It seemed, no matter how much he was against it, the Omega would have to simply suck up whatever pride he had left and beg the royal to let him stay.
And by the gods did Namjoon hate that idea more than anything else he’d done in his life.
Having to grovel and impose himself as a burden on a stranger was the last thing Namjoon had ever wanted to do in his life, but the Omega knew this was the only way for him to survive. He had nowhere else to go and no one to wait for him, so what choice did he have now that the royal had made it clear their paths would not continue together?
Chewing his bottom lip as he felt himself sigh with resignation, Namjoon knew he had no other option than the one obviously laid out before him.
And so, as he cleared his throat and stepped towards the Alpha, Namjoon pushed down his pride and worked up the courage to plead with the man he now needed most.
“Your Grace…If I may…” he tried slowly, but the words struggled to form on his lips; his hesitation growing by the second as he licked his lips in order to continue. Brows furrowing as he stepped closer to the Alpha, Namjoon felt his heart beat faster as he again tried to voice his gratitude.
But surprisingly the Alpha stayed silent all the same.
Confusion quickly morphing his features as he watched the Alpha ready his horse, Namjoon tried again to voice what he could not manage to say before; his words hesitant but finally loud enough to catch the other's attention.
“Your grace…If I could just…speak freely…” he stuttered out brokenly, but once again the Omega was met with silence; the only sound echoing between them the sound of the wind slicing lazily through the branches hanging lowly above.
Patience wearing thin, Namjoon resolved to skip the pleasantries altogether; his voice louder than before as he abruptly stepped forward to finally catch the Alpha’s attention.
“Your Grace–” he spat out harshly once he’d finally reached his limit. But Namjoon soon found himself quickly cut off by the Alpha's sudden movement before him. Wind knocked out of the Omega's sails in record time, Namjoon gaped as the Alpha suddenly whirled on his heel and walked forward to push ever so closely into his personal space.
“Yes, Omega? Is there something you wish to share?” the Alpha tsked a bit impatiently once he finally came to a stop and Namjoon was sure at that moment his heart couldn't beat any louder than it already was. Mouth parted slightly as his heartbeat thudded loudly in his ears, Namjoon floundered for what to say; his lips feeling numb and unable to move as he felt his breath hitch and his lungs practically freeze in place.
Standing this close, Namjoon could catch every bit of the Alpha's scent; the mixture of honeysuckle and sage quickly coating his tongue as if he were pressed up against the other's scent gland entirely.
Face growing warm at the thought, Namjoon stepped back as he all but ripped his gaze away; his face now turned towards the ground as he slightly nodded his head. Clutching the hem of his sleeve tightly in his grasp, Namjoon swallows dryly before he manages to speak up again.
This time, he manages to keep his patience.
Albeit for only a second longer.
“....Yes, I have something that I must discuss with you, your grace. It's… it's about…well–” voice soft and unsure, his eyes still trained on the ground as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other, Namjoon struggled to word what he wanted to say. Hoping his fears and hesitations go unnoticed, Namjoon cleared his throat as he quickly swallowed past the sudden ball in his throat to speak.
But apparently, he didn’t speak fast enough if the royal's impatient sigh was anything to go by.
“It's about what, Omega?” the Alpha asked once the pause between them grew too heavy, the words ringing in Namjoon’s ears just as soon as they were spoken. Mind racing as he noted the confusion spreading across the Alpha’s features, Namjoon took a second to brace himself; the pressure quickly getting the best of him as he glanced at the Alpha still staring down at him.
“What I want to say is...is I-I don't have any way or thing to help pay the debt you just paid for me, sir. Nor can I repay you for saving my life either.” Namjoon stuttered out brokenly after he finally found his courage, his words barely audible over the loud rushing in his ears and thumping in his chest.
Gaze still trained on the ground, Namjoon waited for the Alpha to say something; the air growing thick with tension as he waited for the Alpha to confirm his fears and send him on his way. But much to his surprise, Namjoon found himself faced with a reaction he did not expect; his feet fumbling over themselves as he quickly took a step back as the Alpha before him tsked and stepped forward to close the space between them.
“And since when have I asked you for payment, Omega? Have I alluded in any way that you owe me anything at all?” the Alpha asked as he arched a perfectly kept brow in Namjoon's direction; the dark embers of his eyes shining brightly under the sun's evening glare as Namjoon felt his lips part but no words make a sound.
Because really….what could Namjoon even say?
From the moment the Alpha had stepped in to save him and paid for his freedom, the royal had allowed Namjoon to ride out of town with him without ever speaking a word of repayment. So who was Namjoon to assume such a thing from the Alpha in the first place?
Especially when said Alpha didn't owe him anything from the start.
Brows furrowing as he glanced upward to look at the Alpha, Namjoon fell silent as a million thoughts ran through his head. He hated how much that was happening now, the Alpha's effect on him not going unnoticed as he shuffled awkwardly where he stood. Lips pulled downward as he racked his mind for what to say next, Namjoon stayed quiet as the Alpha watched him closely.
In the back of his mind, Namjoon ignored how the look in the Alpha's gaze never once turned cold but shone gently instead.
He didn't want to know what that meant or, worse, what it meant for him.
Noting his silence as they stared at each other intently, the Alpha sighed as he finally stepped back to allow a small space between them; his tone low but gentle as he gestured down the road they still had yet to follow.
“There is no one to hold you back anymore. You should explore a new life in a new town and make something out of the freedom you’ve just been granted,” the Alpha stated as he stepped towards where Namjoon was standing, his smile now growing wider as he slowly closed the space between them.
But try as he might, Namjoon couldn’t find peace with the Alpha’s words.
Not when he knew what he still had to lose.
And so for what felt like the hundredth time, Namjoon began to plead his case. No matter how much it hurt his pride to do so.
“Your grace, I know you mean well but I…I can't just leave on my own–” Namjoon tried to protest again but his words stopped cold when the Alpha suddenly shook his head; his brows furrowing together as he moved to stare at the Omega intently.
“And why not? You have no more ties to this land, so why stay? Your debt is paid and the Alpha that haunted you is long dead and buried. So why stay here on the outskirts of a town that very clearly does not want you in it?” the Alpha countered quickly, his lips pulling into a lopsided grin as his expression turned from confusion to amusement at the sight of Namjoon's building hesitation.
Mouth growing dry as he blinked nervously under the sun, Namjoon sighed as he tried to firmly stand his ground. He knew the Alpha meant well but there was no way Namjoon was going to survive out here on his own.
Especially not now after all that had happened.
Resigned to his fate, Namjoon knew the only way to stay was for him to tell the truth.
No matter how much he didn't want to.
Brow furrowing as he struggled to find the words; Namjoon licked his lips nervously as he leveled the royal’s gaze with his own. Fidgeting where he stood, Namjoon did his best to keep his voice steady.
By some miracle, he managed to do it; if only for a second.
“I cannot leave this place on my own, your grace, because I….I ...I have a son,” Namjoon responded in a hurry and the sudden look on the royal’s face was one Namjoon was sure he would never forget. Eyes going wide as his smile instantly fell, Namjoon watched as the Alpha before him faltered; the air seemingly knocked out of him as a stunned silence filled the small clearing.
And just like Namjoon had expected, the revelation of his truth wasn’t met with kindness.
Not if the shocked and bewildered sound of the Alpha's voice is anything to go by.
“You have a son!?” the Alpha yelled in bewilderment, his voice thudding loudly in the Omega's ears as Namjoon took a few steps back cautiously. Wincing as the Alpha’s scent grew bitter with surprise, Namjoon tensed as he nodded rigidly; the royal’s reaction making him grow anxious as he eyed the Alpha before him wearingly.
“Yes ... .a pup no older than two,” Namjoon mumbled out quickly as he shrunk in on himself, his chest growing tight as he pictured the son he’d kept secret even to the town who had wanted him dead.
He’d done his best to keep his son a secret for as long as he could and had tried to keep him safe from people Namjoon knew would wish the pup harm. Feeling tears prick at the edges of his eyes, Namjoon couldn't help but feel like an absolute failure as he thought about how his efforts had all been for nothing.
You see, his son had been missing for a few weeks now; the pup ripped out of his crib in the middle of the night before Namjoon could have done anything to stop it. From the start, Namjoon had known and suspected Hwan Chul to be behind the abduction. He’d assumed the damned Alpha had discovered his secret and taken his son as revenge after Namjoon had rejected him the last time. Namjoon's frown deepened when he thought about how death stole his chance to speak with the bastard about his son. Bitter taste quickly flooding his mouth, Namjoon shook the thought from his mind and recalled the day he’d awoken to his most harrowing nightmare.
After he’d woken up and noticed his son gone, Namjoon had been absolutely frantic; his Omega unconsolable as he’d run around in circles trying to make sense of the chaos around him. Most of all, Namjoon remembers how he’d spent days looking for his pup, how he’d spent countless nights crying and praying to all the gods for his safe return.
After failing to catch his son's scent or hearing any rumors of a lost parentless pup around his town, Namjoon had reached his limit and slowly began to hatch a plan. He’d been hoping to sneak out of his home once his Alpha had gone to sleep and maybe venture past his town’s border to see if he could find anything on his own. But try as he might, Namjoon’s plan had gone off the rails the moment his Alpha had grown sick.
Whisked away from their home before Namjoon could even protest, he knew it was only a matter of time before the town came after him. It was a fear that came true the moment his Alpha succumbed to his fever, a fear that only grew stronger once Hwan Chul died with Namjoons name on his lips a few days later.
Like wasps to a nest, the town had blamed and shamed him without a moment's hesitation and Namjoon was not surprised in the least when he found himself at the edge of a pit facing his end as some form of twisted repercussion.
Feeling the air suddenly shift, Namjoon snapped back to the present as he felt the Alpha fidget before him. It was then that Namjoon noticed how his scent had grown bitter; his Omega unable to control its emotions as he shook the memories from his mind and tried his best to reign in the burnt scent of fresh apples and vanilla he was currently emitting.
Eyes narrowing into thin slits as his jaw clenched tightly, the Alpha took note of the Omega's sour scent and slowly took a deep and strained breath before speaking again.
“....The Alpha they were burying when I rode into town…was he your-”
Eyes widening as he shook his head, Namjoon cut the Alpha off as he tried his best to explain his situation.
Not that he thought it possible anymore anyway.
“No, your grace. Hwan Chul was never my mate and I never mated with the Alpha I was forced to marry. Neither Alpha was my son's father..and I...I…It’s a long story, your grace.” Namjoon stuttered as he frowned and shook his head under the Alpha's gaze; the memory of his forced marriage and time with his past tormentor seemingly leaving a bad taste in his mouth even now after all this time.
Chest growing tight as he registered what the Omega was saying, the Alpha all but went rigid as a new question formed in his head. Noting the sudden silence now surrounding them, Namjoon chanced a glance upward toward the Alpha and was surprised to see the wave of emotions now flashing across the Alpha's features. It was then Namjoon noticed the surprise had been wiped clean off the royal's face and instead had been replaced with a wave of anger so hot Namjoon was sure he could almost taste it.
Bracing himself for the worst, Namjoon froze as a sudden panic bloomed deep inside him.
But surprisingly, the anger washing over the Alpha before him is not directed at him at all.
Far from it actually.
“Did ... .did they…force themselves on you-” the Alpha asked through gritted teeth when he could form words again and Namjoon swore his eyes almost popped out of his head. Lips parting in surprise, Namjoon shook his head as he rushed to cut the Alpha off before he could finish.
Safe to say the Alpha’s anger was not directed at him in the least.
“No! No, Your Grace! I promise it wasn't like that! I…I wouldn't allow it. I never shared my heat with either of them and my son…my son was procured through other means entirely.” Namjoon spat out as fast as he could, the words jumbled and rushed as he tried to explain his situation as best as he could.
Eyes still narrowed as his jaw remained clenched, The royal stayed silent as his eyes roamed over the Omega’s features. Scent of honeysuckle and sage filling the air, Namjoon did his best to stay composed as the Alpha regarded him closely.
“And by what means were those exactly?” he asked slowly after a brief pause, his voice now sounding calmer as the tinge of anger slowly faded from his scent. Sigh leaving his lips as he shook his head, Namjoon shrugged and smiled sadly at the Alpha looming before him.
“It's a long story, your grace. One that begs understanding,” Namjoon whispered lowly and the Omega didn't miss the way his words echoed around them; the tinge of sadness in his voice evident even to himself as he spoke about his situation more and more.
Lips pulled into a thin line at his answer, the Alpha watched Namjoon for a second longer; his eyes searching for something Namjoon couldn't quite see. Holding his breath as he waited, Namjoon hoped that whatever the Alpha was looking for would be enough to let him stay.
He knew now just how much his son's life depended on it.
And now sadly, so did his own.
Wind sweeping gently through the valley, the trees above them shake lazily with the breeze; the sun hanging above now slowly making its ascent towards the horizon. Feeling his limbs grow heavy with fatigue, Namjoon loses track of time as the sky grows darker; the Omega unsure of just how long they stand there on the side of the road in silence.
Unsure of what to do or say next, Namjoon wondered if they’d ever speak again or worse; he wondered if he’d be denied his request and be sent on his way before the Alpha could change his mind.
Thankfully, before his fears could get the best of him, the royal stepped forward and finally set his mind at ease.
“So….you need help…finding your son?” the Alpha asked quietly, his words slow but deliberate as he bore his gaze into the Omega’s own like before. Taking a deep breath when he felt his chest grow tight, Namjoon nodded as he fidgeted with a loose thread swaying gently between his fingers.
“Yes, your grace….. I need it more than anything in the world,” he muttered with sincere desperation, his voice teetering on the edge of despair as he waited for the Alpha’s response.
And maybe it's the way his voice doesn't shake when he speaks or the look in his eye when he meets the Alpha's gaze or maybe just the way the wind brushes through his hair but whatever the reason, the Alpha feels Namjoon’s sincerity behind every word.
There's no way for him to explain it, not a single rational thing about the entire situation he's in at the moment but….the way the Omega stared at him…the way he looked at him now as if he could fall apart at any second….
The Alpha figured he had no possible way to deny him.
Not even if he wanted to do so in the first place.
He simply couldn't imagine it.
So he didn’t.
“Then I will help you find your son ... .If you would accept my help that is.” He offered gently after a brief pause, the words surprising even himself as he quickly made up his mind and moved to stand proudly before the Omega.
And just like that, with a simple utterance of a sentence, the Alpha sealed their fates, and with it, the promise of so much more.
A shame Namjoon was currently too distracted to notice it happening.
Ears not really trusting what he’s heard, Namjoon asked the Alpha to repeat himself a second time; his heart thudding in his chest the moment he heard the Alpha’s offer again.
Safe to say Namjoon was a whirlwind of emotions once the Alpha's words were confirmed; his eyes burning with a desperate urge to cry as he struggled to catch his breath.
“Y-you-...if I would-? Oh, of course I would, your grace! Please, your help would mean the world to me and my pup!” Namjoon exclaimed as he was hit with an overwhelming sense of relief and shock in a matter of seconds. Blinking rapidly as his mind raced with exhausting excitement, Namjoon bowed low before the royal and resisted the urge to jump straight into the Alpha’s arms.
Namjoon knew what an unwise thing that would be for him to do and yet, it was hard for him to suppress the urge as he rose to straighten out and meet the Alpha's gaze again. Biting back a sob as the Alpha's words finally sink in, Namjoon manages to express his gratitude in a different way; his scent flooding their surroundings in record time as his Omega purred in pure relief.
A small smile blooming on his lips as he quickly caught the scent of fresh apples and vanilla in the breeze, the Alpha cleared his throat as he glanced toward the ground and did his best to avoid the other's endearing gaze. He’d never been one for sudden compliments or praise; in fact, the Alpha did his best to avoid such situations.
And yet, as he stood on the side of the road with the Omega before him, He wondered why this time made him feel…different.
Almost prideful, even.
Shaking his head as he cleared his mind, the Alpha considered it best not to dwell on such thoughts any longer; Lest he go insane finding reasons where there weren't any to begin with.
“Well, then. Now that that's settled, we should-,” the Alpha tried as he began to slowly turn on his heel but to his surprise, he didn’t get far. Not when a sudden hand wrapped around his wrist and his words come to an abrupt stop once he's pulled back from going any further.
“Wait!”
Eyes wide as his lips twitched and his brows furrowed, the Alpha could only stare as his eyes fell to where the Omega's hand wrapped around his own. Skin suddenly blooming with goosebumps, the Alpha quirked a brow as he glanced upward to catch what the other was already hurriedly saying.
“I-I need only ask you one last thing, your grace,” the Omega stuttered after he caught his breath, his words rushed as they tumbled past his lips in a hurry. Eyeing the Omega closely, the royal decided to humor the Omega a little longer.
If only for his own amusement.
“Hmm? And what is it that you must know so urgently, Omega?” the Alpha asked as he ignored the sensation now running up his arm; his chest bubbling with an emotion he couldn't quite put his finger on the longer they stayed connected. Ignoring the heat now embedded in his skin, the Alpha cleared his throat and tried not to whine when the Omega blushed deeply before finally pulling away.
Equally affected by the man standing before him, Namjoon does his best to meet the Alpha's gaze again. Gulping as he glanced upward to stare at the Alpha's shoulder, Namjoon guessed that would have to be close enough for now.
“.......Why ..why are you helping me, your grace? I mean you no offense sire, but we don't personally know each other, so why would you? Surely you must know you are wasting your time on someone like me, yes?” Namjoon muttered as his brows furrowed slightly, a look of confusion flashing across his features as the Alpha’s gaze stayed trained directly on his own.
Standing still as a beat of silence passed tensely between them, Namjoon held his breath as he waited for the Alpha's answer.
He found himself grateful when the Alpha didn’t leave him waiting for long.
“Well…to put it simply and to put you at ease… I'm helping you….because you are simply worth helping. Doesn’t that seem reason enough?” the Alpha said quietly when his words slowed down and his voice grew quiet, his eyes glancing downward to look into Namjoons own.
And really, Namjoon knew he had no way to refute or answer the Alpha’s question.
Once again it seemed the Alpha's words had rendered him mute for what felt like the thousandth time that day.
In the end, when his brain felt like it could form a thought and work again, Namjoon reasoned that it was as good a reason anyone had ever given him. He thought it wouldn't hurt to believe the Alpha at face value.
Even if part of him still couldn't manage to face the Alpha directly any longer than necessary.
Oh well, at least he’d give it his best try.
“Alright then, so if we're quite done with this I think we should-”
“Wait-One more thing!” Namjoon exclaimed as the Alpha tried for the second time to wiggle away from him, his sigh loud and obvious as it signaled for Namjoon to hurry and ask what else was on his mind.
“What is it now?” the Alpha asked with a slight tilt in his voice and Namjoon didn’t waste a second as he stepped forward and glanced up at the Alpha head-on. Eyes blinking rapidly as he licked his lips nervously, Namjoon did his best to cut right to the chase.
“Before we go......may I at least know the name of the man who saved my life?” He whispered gently and by the look of utter surprise flashing across the Alpha's features, Namjoon figured it was probably the first time the Alpha had ever been asked such a thing.
Fighting off a smirk as he watched the Alpha's cheeks grow hot, Namjoon did his best to ignore the sudden satisfaction coursing through him. He figured it best if he didn't dwell on such things, especially at a time like this; even if he did find the Alpha quite the sight as he grew flustered under Namjoons stare.
Taking a second to focus his gaze and keep it trained on the Alpha, Namjoon watched as the Alpha weighed his options. For a split second, Namjoon began to wonder if maybe he overstepped a boundary unbeknownst to him but thankfully, a beat of silence later, Namjoon finally got the answer he wanted.
Only it's not what the Omega expected, not by a long shot.
“........Jungkook. My name is Jungkook,” the Alpha muttered softly into the breeze and once again, Namjoon was left speechless as his breath caught abruptly in his throat; the sound of the Alpha's name cutting straight through the air coming directly at him as it echoed loudly in his ears.
And by the gods did Namjoon know that name and know it well.
Everyone did.
Eyes wide, Namjoon was sure the name did not belong to a lowly royal.
Not even close.
Staring up at the Alpha before him, his scent flowing softly in the breeze, Namjoon was a hundred percent sure that name belonged to the one and only prince in waiting.
THE Prince Jungkook of their ruling region and kingdom.
Mouth falling open as he tried to speak, Namjoon could only stare as the Alpha-no, as Jungkook chuckled softly at his utter disbelief. Lips parted and closing around words unsaid, Namjoon was sure if he could speak or form a sentence, it would be nothing but a jumbled mess of words.
Too bad that wasn't a problem for Jungkook, his smirk and teasing voice the only thing heard as he nodded before taking a small step back from the flustered Omega.
“Yeah, I get that a lot. Don't worry, the shock will wear off soon…or well, some of it at least. How about we get going now, yeah? We shouldn’t want to draw any more attention to ourselves out here tonight,” Jungkook tsked as he watched Namjoon process everything he was saying.
Holding back a grin as he watched Namjoon closely, the Alpha was sure he could almost hear the gears in the Omega's head working overtime as Namjoon searched for what to say or do next. Sighing softly to himself, Jungkook tried hard not to coo when the Omega’s cheeks started to turn a deep shade of red or when his scent grew flustered as the wind picked up around them.
He tried his hardest to fight it, he really did.
Namjoon on the other hand, wasn’t feeling so coy.
On the contrary, as his brows furrowed and his mouth snapped shut, Namjoon could only stutter out a reply before hurrying to look away; his nerve dissolving at record speed as he felt fire bloom deep in his face and a wave of embarrassment start to slowly sink deep in his veins.
Leave it to Namjoon to make a fool of himself before a prince of all people.
Figures.
“O-oh, yes….Let's…we should go, your grace,” Namjoon managed to stutter after the Alpha gave him one last look, and before Namjoon could stop or ask him anything further, Jungkook turned on his heel and finally made his way back to their horse a small distance away.
And just like that, the two were off again; the path sitting empty before them as Namjoon could do nothing but silently fall behind the Alpha as they climbed and settled atop their horse just like before. Ignoring his blushing cheeks as he wrapped his arms around Jungkook's frame for purchase, Namjoon gulped as he set his focus up ahead; the pit in his stomach growing tight the moment Jungkook pulled the reins and the two lurched forward with surprising speed.
Gritting his teeth as the Alpha set a quick pace down the path, Namjoon held on as he tried to rein in his thoughts; a whirlwind of emotions coursing through him as the breeze nipped at his skin and ran wild through his hair.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t until the sun was barely visible over the horizon that their pace came to a slow trot; the air around them thick with tension as they quietly made their way down a small and overgrown path. Nightfall starting to dawn by the time they finally made it to Jungkook's hideaway, Namjoons stayed silent as he watched the sun hanging low on the horizon; their horse finally coming to a slow and tedious stop as they reached a hidden and tree-blocked hill.
Air rich with the scent of Lilies and Petrichor, Namjoon leaned forward as he tried to get a better glance over the Alpha's shoulder; the vast expanse of greenery around him making him fidget as he tried to see where Jungkook's home could possibly be.
They'd been on the road for a few hours now, and yet, Namjoon was still hesitant as he sat awkwardly behind the prince. He couldn't help but wonder if the Alpha really was who he claimed to be; doubt growing in the back of his mind as darkness began to slowly descend around them. Eyes scanning the tree line as he took a deep breath to calm his nerves, Namjoon reasoned there was only one way for him to find out the truth.
He would simply have to take Jungkook at his word; even if he didn't fully know the man currently looking over his shoulder to address him directly.
“The place is just up ahead, make sure to hold on as I break through the brush,” he whispered lowly and Namjoon didn't have to be told twice as he nodded in response; his lips pulling into a small smile as Jungkook hummed before turning his attention back towards the path ahead.
Arms tightening around Jungkook's frame as the prince snapped the reins, Namjoon held his breath as he ventured headfirst into the unknown; the blooming stars above the only witnesses to his path below.
And so, as they moved in silence, Namjoon held on as his journey finally began—a journey bound not only by the bonds of royalty but by the desperate need to rescue that which was most precious to him.
Sending a silent prayer to the gods above, Namjoon hoped he’d made the right choice by tagging along. It's the last thing he thought about before they finally disappeared into the brush; the weight of the world settling upon his shoulders as he embraced the risk lying up ahead.
After all, all's well that ends well…right?

Safe to say as soon as Namjoon laid his gaze upon the cobblestone beauty sitting atop the hill, there were no more doubts in the Omega's mind of who Jungkook claimed himself to be.
Because really, there was no way the mansion before him wasn't built for a king or whoever followed after.
Low burning flames flickering in brass braziers, Namjoon felt his lips part as he eyed the road ahead of him adorned with flickering flames; the pair trotting slowly down the path as the foliage of the forest gave way as a clear and lit entryway greeted them at the foot of a steep hill. Trees hanging low as the dark sky peeked through open slips in the green canopy, Namjoon felt his heartbeat start to rise as the stars twinkled brightly overhead.
If he squinted, Namjoon was almost sure he could make out the constellations from where he sat atop their horse; his eyes focused on the dark canopy above as they kept a steady pace over the cobblestones now beneath their horse's feet. Small gasp leaving his lips as they made their way up the hill, Namjoon stared wide-eyed as he stared out into the wide expanse of neat and groomed forest laid out around the hill. Tall trees reaching up into the sky, Namjoon eyed the branches that curved over the many well-kept paths that led into parts of the forest Namjoon could no longer see.
It was all so breathtaking, so beautiful; and as Namjoon turned his gaze back to the path leading up the hill, the Omega noticed the sky wasn't the only captivating thing for him to see.
Lining the path in vibrant shades of indigo, blush, and violet, bushes of wisteria and hyacinth lined the path and littered the ground as Namjoon continued to hold on to the Alpha before him. Swirls of loose petals fluttering freely in the wind, Namjoon watched in awe as the flowers were swept away by every gentle swipe of wind; their scent hanging heavily in the air the deeper the pair rode into the land.
Eyes falling shut as he inhaled sharply, Namjoon let the scents of the forest wash over him as he felt overwhelmed by so many new emotions. Wind brushing gently through his hair, the scent of rain and earth sinking deep into his skin, Namjoon couldn't help but want to call the place home. He couldn't quite explain it but it seemed the place was calling to him; lulling him and his worries to rest the longer they made their way up the path as a pair of iron-clad gates finally came into view.
Eyes snapping open the minute he thinks the words, Namjoon figures it best to ignore such thoughts; his brows furrowing as he quickly worked to clear his mind and scent of any lingering needs or desires. Forcing himself to remember who he was, Namjoon reminded himself he was a stranger and a commoner. The land he was on had probably once belonged to a king and was now in the hands of the prince sitting before him.
So no, calling this secluded paradise his home was not in the Omega’s cards nor a right he earned or shared. Above all else, Namjoon had to remember that no matter what he did or said, he would never be able to call this place home.
No matter how much his Omega was already dying to do so.
“Halt! Who goes there?”
Jumping as a sudden shout cut through the air, the pair came to an abrupt stop as the gate before them stayed closed; a pair of armored knights soon walking out of the shadows as they shouted at them from behind the iron bars. Eyes going wide as he stiffened behind Jungkook’s frame, Namjoon stayed silent as he felt the Alpha bow his head in greeting; the timbre of his voice vibrating deep in his chest as he raised his arm to signal the guards his compliance.
“Jeon Jungkook, the Lord of this house,” the Alpha barked back firmly; the title of his name proof enough for the guards standing in their way. Bowing their heads low as they greeted them kindly, the guards fell back as they reached to swing the gates open; the pair soon stepping over the threshold as the heavy metal groaned and creaked before them.
Not a minute later, Namjoon felt his body tense once they came to a stop; Jungkook's horse soon halting in the middle of what appeared to be a small courtyard lined with thin firs and tall reeds. Cobblestones soon giving way to solid stone, Namjoon gapped as they waited before the entrance of the mansion; its imposing presence looming silently above them as Namjoon stared at every intricacy etched into the building. Noting his silence as he turned to glance over his shoulder, Jungkook smirked as he gestured towards the entrance; his voice low and deep but audible enough for Namjoon to hear him.
"Welcome to my home away from home," he muttered softly, "we should be safe here for as long as we both need to be." He sighed, his hands letting the reins go as he suddenly took hold of the saddle and leaned forward to carefully swing his legs off his horse. Dismounting gracefully with a small grunt, Jungkook landed on his feet in a slew of fluid and controlled movements; his body in full control despite the weariness of their journey. Reaching the ground as he made sure to adjust his clothes, Jungkook turned with a gentle smile once he grew content with his appearance; his hand reaching out before him as he aimed to assist Namjoon down from atop his horse with an air of courtesy.
Hands gripping onto the saddle like his life depended on it, Namjoon took a deep breath as he eyed the prince’s hand; a bolt of fear shooting through him before steeling himself and reaching for the offered hand beneath him. But unlike Jungkook’s princely dismount, Namjoon climbed off the horse in timid and awkward movements; a deep ache soon settling in his muscles as he landed heavily on his feet and winced from the continuously long ride.
Taking a moment to gather his bearings, Namjoon regained his balance as he found himself standing in the middle of the courtyard; a gentle breeze running through his hair as he felt the weight of Jungkook's hand quickly leave his own. Brows furrowing as he felt the Alpha pull away, Namjoon held his breath as he fought the urge to chase after the Alpha’s touch; a pang of longing rushing through his chest as he stepped aside to ensure the growing space between them.
Standing in a courtyard made of pale brick and stone, Namjoon turned to stare at the mansion sitting before him; the tall and ornate towers making his breath catch in his throat the longer he stared ahead. Gaze eventually coming back down to glance at his feet, Namjoon found himself content to see the flowers that had lined the path now fluttering freely around his feet; the petals drifting lazily in the breeze somehow calming his nerves the longer he stared at them. Besides him, his eyes scanning the courtyard attentively, Jungkook looked around for someone to help them gather their horse; his gaze soon landing on a lone beta a few feet away standing idly by the mansion's right wall.
Straightening his posture as he took a step forward, Jungkook cleared his throat as he gestured the beta forward with a single wave of his hand; the boy's small eyes growing wide as he gulped before walking quickly to where the prince stood waiting.
“Your Grace,” he murmured, bowing quickly; the beta wasting no time as Jungkook gestured towards his horse still standing behind him.
“Take Bastion out back to his station; make sure he’s fed and set for the night. He’s been ridden more than he's used to and I won't have him passing on me,” Jungkook stated as he stared down at the young boy clothed in plain white silk; the betas chest branded with the sigil of the royal family now highly visible as he instantly bowed at the Alpha’s request.
“Yes, Your Highness. At once.” The boy mumbled quietly as he straightened back up and before Namjoon could even protest or offer to help, the reins were out of Jungkook's hands
and in the beta's grasp; the horse soon turned away from the pair as the beastly animal moved to follow after the beta like some love-sick puppy.
If it’d been any other situation, Namjoon was sure he would have laughed at the sight of it all.
But as he watched the unlikely duo make their way down a narrow walkway, Namjoon wondered if he’d be able to laugh again with the many unanswered and racing questions now lingering in the back of his mind.
Lips turning downward as he sighed, Namjoon realized he was doomed; he more than anyone knew he couldn't hold back from asking a question even if his life depended on it.
Turning to face the Alpha standing beside him after a brief pause, Namjoon eyed Jungkook carefully as he mulled his questions over; his lips pulling into a thin line as he thought of all his doubts and how to word them. Blinking slowly as he was framed by the soft light filtering through the courtyard, it wasn’t long before Namjoon finally managed to find the words he needed; his throat clearing as he aimed to gain Jungkook's attention again.
“Your Grace…..If you don't mind me asking…what’s out back?” Namjoon asked as his gaze turned to linger after the horse; its long tail still swinging lazily in the air as the young man from before led it down the path and towards a building Namjoon couldn't quite see.
Brow arching as if confused with his question, Jungkook turned in the Omega’s direction and pointed towards the building; his lips pulling into a smirk as he chuckled lightly at Namjoon's expression.
“Out back? That's where we have the stables…for the horses.” The Alpha stated plainly as his brows furrowed slightly; the look on Namjoon's face one that shined with genuine curiosity as Jungkook regarded Namjoon carefully
Head tilting to the side as if deep in thought, Namjoon turned to look at the mansion before glancing back down towards the ground; his lips pulling into a lopsided smirk as he kicked the petals now bunching around his feet.
“Horses? As in more than one?” Namjoon tsked as he glanced towards where Jungkook was standing; the prince frowning slightly as he briefly turned his attention back to the mare as the pair watched the stablehand pet it gently on his side.
“Yes? Do…do you usually not …have more than one around?” Jungkook asked as his brows creased with genuine confusion; his voice absent of any taunt or malice as he turned to stare at Namjoon curiously.
Eyebrows rising as his features filled with surprise, Namjoon scoffed as a sudden burst of laughter pushed past his lips. Him? Own a horse, let alone more than one? Gods, the town would have made that the reason to throw him into the ground faster. Namjoon thought bitterly.
Shaking his head as he chuckled, Namjoon crossed his arms as he turned to face the Alpha; his lips pulling into a wide smile as he gestured towards the gates sitting closed behind him.
“Sadly no, your grace. We- or well I never had a horse or the privilege to keep one, let alone more than one," Namjoon replied as he felt his smile widen and his laughter grow louder; the idea of having more than one horse of his own a ludicrous notion Namjoon knew his town would’ve never allowed him.
Eyes narrowing as his frown deepened, Jungkook tsked as he did his best to keep his scent neutral and calm.
“Oh? How come?” he asked slowly as a burst of anger quickly coursed through him; a sense of dread filling him whole as he realized the magnitude of the injustice Namjoon had endured in that terrible town. Rolling his eyes as he shook his head, Namjoon uncrossed his arms as he rested his hands on his hips; the hem of his gown swaying gently in the breeze as the Omega shifted on his feet.
“I think you saw for yourself why I couldn't do what I wished for the past few years in that town,” Namjoon hummed as he let out a deep sigh, his once wide smile now diminished as Namjoon turned to face the horizon as he avoided Jungkook's pensive gaze. Sensing the Omega turn away from him, Jungkook cleared his throat as it was his turn to kick at the ground; his usual carefree demeanor fading for a brief moment as he tried to find a way to relate. Considering how Jungkook had never once been restrained or almost murdered in a town square, the Alpha found it a tough task to achieve as he tsked and turned to look at the space around them.
Oh well, better something small than nothing at all right?
“Well, to answer your question…having more than one mare on hand is common in most royal families but to tell you the truth…I'm just fond of the beasts.” He huffed out as he smiled softly, a gentleness seeping into his voice as he ran a hand through his windswept hair. Beside him, his attention piqued, Namjoon turned back to face the Alpha as he grew intrigued.
“Oh? How so?” he asked as he took a deep breath, the sky above growing dark as the wind swept through the courtyard with a renowned ferocity. Lips pulling into a grin, Jungkook shrugged as he sighed; his eyes shining brightly as they reflected back the dancing flames lining the courtyard steps as he felt the wind around them grow stronger.
“I’m not sure...I guess what pulls me towards them is the fact their spirits can't be broken. No matter what you put them through, they run strong till the end,” the prince muttered as his brows furrowed; a flash of something unsaid burning in his gaze as Namjoon fell silent beside him.
Eyes narrowing as he hummed, Namjoon reasoned he could understand what Jungkook was trying to say. He, out of everyone else, could see the appeal in something or someone who could and would fight till the end.
Ripped out of his thoughts as he sensed the prince shift beside him, Namjoon figured he and the prince were more alike than the Alpha liked to let on.
It's a realization that lingered in the back of his mind as he watched Jungkook closely; the prince clearing his throat as he moved purposefully towards the mansion looming silently ahead of them. Eyes following his every move, Namjoon was quick to pay attention; a shiver running down his spine as a sudden chill settled heavily in the air.
“Come, Let's head Inside. It’s been a long day and the night grows cold,” the Alpha muttered as he turned to lead the way and it was all the convincing the Omega needed to finally get a move on. Taking a deep breath as he took one last look at the petals fluttering wildly in the breeze, Namjoon moved from his spot rooted on the ground. Footsteps echoing loudly as he fell into line behind the Alpha, Namjoon made his way to the entrance as they cut through the empty courtyard in record time.
Heart thudding in his ears as he climbed the steps leading to a pair of grand oak doors, Namjoon held his breath as they slowly swung open before him. Eyes landing on the Intricate carvings etched into the wood, Namjoon felt his lips part as the stained glass embedded delicately within the door panels cast patterns across the entrance in every color; the foyer beyond cast in a hue of vibrant color and light as the Omega worked up the courage to finally step over the threshold.
And just like before, Namjoon took one step forward and was introduced into a new world of beauty he’d never known. Only this time, he wasn't alone; not when the prince walked beside him like a silent yet reassuring presence.
Smile quickly tugging at his lips, Namjoon figured this was as good as good could get for him.
But of course, with an Alpha like Jungkook by his side, Namjoon couldn't help but wonder what could possibly be better for him.
Turns out, he was about to find out.
And fast.

The inside of the mansion was more stunning to Namjoon than anything he had ever seen and much more glamorous than the shabby homes he’d been thrown into in his previous marriage.
As the heavy oak doors swung closed behind him with a low, echoing creak, Namjoon stepped tentatively into the grand foyer bathed with colorful light. Air scented with the mix of ancient wood and sage, Namjoon gapped as he eyed the many items lining the walls; a set of towering stained glass windows on either side of him casting vibrant hues of blue and gold onto the polished marble floor now beneath his feet.
Footsteps echoing softly as he moved deeper into the mansion, Namjoon felt his eyes widen as he spotted elaborate tapestries adorning the walls; each depicting scenes of knights in shining armor and mythical creatures. Gaze wandering up to the ceiling as he eyed each banner, Namjoon felt his lips part in surprise as he found intricate wooden beams intertwined overhead like branches of an old tree; a pair of chandeliers hanging from the rafters as they shone bright like glistening stars.
Bathed in a warm glow as he was led down a corridor, Namjoon muttered and gasped as his gaze fell upon every new thing around him; the pair soon making their way into the main hall as the Alpha watched Namjoon quietly beside him.
Soon passing through an arched doorway, Namjoon turned toward the prince as they came to a stop before a marble fireplace burning with a low fire in the middle of a wide and spacious room. Brows furrowing as he worked to ask the Alpha where they were, Namjoon found himself cut off as he caught sight of the walls lining the main hall; his eyes impossibly huge as he brought a hand up and over his mouth in surprise.
Standing tall and filled from head to toe, Namjoon felt his head spin as his gaze landed on various bookshelves filled with leather-bound novels he was sure had cost Jungkook a fortune; their binds well kept and shining under the flickering flames of an overhead chandelier as Namjoon stood and tried to take everything in all at once.
Safe to say that was easier said than done.
“My gods…are these…are these all yours?” Namjoon muttered as he glanced towards where the prince was standing quietly; a strange look shining in the Alpha’s eyes as he nodded slowly beside him. Lips pulling into a small smirk, Jungkook tsked as he took a few steps toward a shelf, his fingers grazing the binds lightly as his gaze moved from cover to cover.
“I've collected these for quite a few years now. Soon I might need to make a separate study just to hold the rest I plan to find.” The Alpha chuckled as he stared at the vast collection of books fondly; his gaze turning back to land on Namjoon as the Omega sighed and shook his head in disbelief.
“Gods,…..do…do you usually live like this?” Namjoon huffed out as he stared at the prince with an incredulous smile, Jungkook’s brow furrowing slightly as he once again felt confused by the Omega’s question.
“Live…how?” the prince mused after a brief pause and Namjoon could hardly keep his lips from pulling into a smirk as he burst out into a fit of giggles.
“...In pure abundance, your grace?” The Omega spat out as he laughed louder; his lips pulling into a wide grin once he noticed a soft blush suddenly bloom over the Alpha's cheeks. Feeling Namjoon's gaze on him as his laughter echoed around them, Jungkook hastily looked away as he cleared his throat nervously; his eyes blinking rapidly as he tried to figure out why he was so flustered by such a simple question.
Trying his best to distract himself, Jungkook coughed as he gestured towards an opposite hall behind them; his face suddenly growing guarded as he stepped away from the bookshelf and moved to walk past the other.
"Oh, uh….well it's kind of hard for me to say no when I have yet to show you the rest of the house, right?" he hummed as he headed towards the hall, his feet moving slightly faster than before as his voice echoed slightly hoarse around them.
Brows furrowing as his laughter died down, Namjoon shook his head as he called for the Alpha to wait for him, the pair soon leaving the main hall behind as Namjoon hurried to follow the Alpha's steps as they made their way through the rest of the mansion.
And honestly, to say Namjoon's expression stayed in a permanent state of shock and awe was an understatement.
Truth be told, the Omega was gobsmacked as he stared at everything in complete and utter wonder.
Strolling through the corridors as Jungkook led the way, the Alpha couldn't help but steal glances at Namjoon; the Omega's genuine amazement making his heart flutter unexpectedly with endearment. Trying his best to sound unfazed, the prince became a makeshift guide as he pointed out various features of the mansion and so on; Namjoon’s constant attention leaving him strangely flustered yet unable to look or move away.
Walking side by side, the pair spoke softly as they passed various rooms filled with valuable odds and ends; each one more fascinating than the next as Namjoon felt them move endlessly throughout the mansion for what felt like forever.
It’s not until they finally come to a stop before a spiraling staircase that Namjoon manages to catch his breath, the tall oak-colored stairs looming before him seemingly leading to what Namjoon could only presume was the second level.
Brows furrowing as he watched the prince turn to face him, Namjoon’s expression grew confused as the Alpha gestured towards the stairs laid out before them. Lips pulling into a polite smile as he eyed Namjoon closely, Jungkook basked in the warm glow of the surrounding candlelight as he bowed slightly before the Omega.
"Namjoon," the Alpha began as he straightened upward, his voice carrying a soft yet commanding tone that sent a shiver down Namjoon's spine in record time. "Let me escort you to your quarters, it should be just up ahead." He spoke as his words were soft yet tinged with an underlying authority, the tone reminding Namjoon of just who he was currently speaking to.
Nodding silently as a mix of nervousness and anticipation grew in his gut, Namjoon smiled hesitantly as he did his best to curtsy in response; his face flushing a deep red as he felt Jungkook's gaze search his own before turning back around to lead the way up ahead. Quick to follow in the prince’s footsteps, Namjoon eyed the Alpha’s back as he took in his new surroundings; the stairs shining just as lavishly as the rest of the house he had just ventured through earlier.
Hand wrapping around the polished banister as he made his way up the stairs, Namjoon ascended slowly as his fingers trailed lightly over the wood; each step echoing louder than the next as his gaze finally managed to spot the second landing. It’s then as he reaches the top of the stairs that Namjoon realizes just how different his life was to the prince; the large hallway adorned with paintings so rich in color and history Namjoon was sure they were valued more than he or anyone else could ever afford.
Eyes landing on the portraits of stern-faced nobles and past rulers, Namjoon felt his mouth grow dry as he felt the weight and intensity behind each work of art; his heart thumping loudly in his ears as he slowed down to eye each painting closely.
Framed with gold filigree and etched with the names of past Kings and Queens, Namjoon blinked slowly as he realized the paintings were of Jungkook’s ancestors; the resemblance almost uncanny as he eyed every portrait he passed by. Feeling their frozen gazes follow his every move, Namjoon suppressed a shiver as he hurried to catch up to the prince; his skin blooming with goosebumps as he moved quickly to leave the frozen yet intimidating stares behind.
Snapping out of his daze with a start, Namjoon realized he had fallen behind the Alpha by a small distance; his feet thumping softly over the carpeted ground as he raced to catch up to the Alpha just in time. Stopping before a set of doors adorned with white and gold trim, Namjoon held his breath as Jungkook took a second to think; his hand reaching out towards the brass handle before turning to face Namjoon still standing awkwardly behind him.
“Here, this one is yours. It’s been a while since anyone's occupied it but I'll ensure it gets readied and fit for you.” the prince hummed, his hand turning the knob and pushing the door open before Namjoon could even process what the prince was saying.
“Oh, your grace-...thank you, I-” he tried to say but Jungkook was quick to cut him off before the Omega could thank him for all he had already done for him.
“Namjoon please,...call me Jungkook. I believe after everything we’ve gone through today we’re past the need for formalities,” the Alpha huffed out with a warm smile, his tone deep and genuine as he watched Namjoon blink in surprise. Lips parting as the prince’s words took him aback, Namjoon found himself growing flustered under the Alpha’s waiting gaze; his chest growing tight as he nodded and stuttered out an unsteady reply.
“Truth be told, your grace-...Jungkook. I…I never expected you to be so…so…informal." Namjoon spat out as he chuckled, the Omega clearing his throat as he tried to steady his nerves. "But, I appreciate it. I really do. It feels…nice not to have to bow my head to another Alpha for a change." Namjoon muttered as his voice wavered slightly, his cheeks growing warm as he glanced upward and met the prince’s earnest gaze.
And for a small moment, the two share a silent exchange; the air between them suddenly growing tense with an unspoken understanding. Eyes softening as he observed Namjoon closely, Jungkook felt his heart start to race as he caught a glimpse of the vulnerability behind the Omega’s gaze. Of course, Jungkook knew there was more Namjoon wasn't telling him; knew the Omega had deeper secrets and unspoken horrors lurking within him.
But Jungkook hoped that, with time, maybe Namjoon would let him in and share what he had to share with him. He hoped after today, they would only grow closer rather than away.
Of course, Jungkook tries not to linger too much on what this hope meant for him. He made sure to add it to the growing list of things Namjoon was making him question and worse, feel.
Gaze turning away from Namjoon’s own, Jungkook cleared his throat as he broke the silence hanging between them; his scent threatening to roll off him in waves as he sent a small smile the Omega’s way.
“Rest assured I’ll never make you bow for me, Namjoon. I only want us to be friends but only if you’d like us to be,” Jungkook spoke as he stepped forward, his scent of honeysuckle and sage flooding Namjoons senses as he jumped at the Alpha’s sudden proximity. Blinking rapidly as he licked his dry lips, Namjoon took a deep breath before finally speaking again; his mind a mess of words he couldn't bring himself to say.
Small smile tugging at his lips, Namjoon did his best to sound reassuring; his own scent of fresh apples and vanilla filling the air as he built up the courage to look at the other fully.
“I’d…I’d like that, Jungkook. I’d like that very much,” he whispered gently, and with a wide grin that had heat rushing to the Omega’s face, Jungkook knelt before Namjoon and took his hand in his own. “To being friends then,” he whispered softly and before Namjoon could fully grasp what was happening, Jungkook’s lips were against his skin; the sudden kiss to the back of his hand leaving the Omega speechless as the Alpha quickly pulled away.
And then…he was gone; Jungkook wasting no time as he rose to bid Namjoon good night and farewell; his kiss like a ghost's touch seared into the back of Namjoon's hand.
Stuttering out his own wishes for a good night, Namjoon blinked as he tried to piece together what had just happened; his hand now cradled against his chest as he turned on his heel to watch the Alpha walk past him. Footsteps echoed on the ground as he moved with a silent yet determined stride, Jungkook moved quickly as his scent trailed after him; the prince making his way towards the stairs in what felt like record time.
Watching as Jungkook reached the stairs and finally slipped from view, Namjoon felt himself grow cold as he immediately missed the prince’s presence; a chill running up and down his spine as he stood in the empty and dimly lit hallway. Turning back towards his room a few moments later, Namjoon shook his head as he briefly closed his eyes; the Omega took a few seconds to collect himself before finally taking the first step over the threshold into his room.
And just like before and probably not for the first time that night, Namjoon gasped as the room itself was nothing short of beautiful and perfect.
But of course, after everything he had just seen and been introduced to, Namjoon figured there wasn't a room in the entire house that was anything short of perfection.
He guessed living as a prince had something to do with that.
“Gods above….and I thought my house was big,” Namjoon mumbled as he stepped into his new quarters, a small chandelier hanging from the rafters above lighting the inside of the room as the Omega's gaze landed on everything in sight.
Spotting tall walls adorned in hues of ivory and pale blue, Namjoon let his gaze fall on the vast furniture set up across the room; the intricate woodwork that was his new bed frame impressing him in a heartbeat. Colored in deep shades of mahogany and ivory scattered in various forms around the room, Namjoon marveled at the intricate details carved into each piece of wood; the room a work of beauty as he noticed something new every time he turned around.
Breath caught in his throat, Namjoon stared as the room itself was stunning; the intricacy of the riches around him more than Namjoon was far from used to.
Moving forward as if in a trance, Namjoon walked toward the middle of the room and stopped once he stood at the foot of the grand bed sitting snugly against the farthest wall. Hand reaching out to lightly touch the heavy sheets strewn expertly over the plush mattress, Namjoon felt his breath hitch at the material now slipping like silk between his fingers. He could only imagine how good it would feel to sleep there later, his skin itching to lay on the sheets as he trailed his hands along the edge as he walked deeper into the room.
Eyeing a set of doors to his right, Namjoon walks slowly as his brows furrow, the doors etched with flowers in deep shades of blue calling his attention as he reaches for the handles made of intertwining brass. Grasp tightening around the doors as he pulled them forward, Namjoon's eyes snapped open as he stepped back with a start; the sight before him causing his breath to catch in his throat for what felt like the hundredth time that night.
Because what really leaves the Omega speechless where he stands is the sight of his newly obtained wardrobe, the doors to his new walk-in closet swinging open to grant him a view of the vast options of dresses and smooth satin silk he had now to choose from.
Eyes wide as his lips parted in surprise, Namjoon took hesitant steps into the closet, his eyes scanning over every piece of clothing hanging in neat rows as his hand shuffled through the layers of hanging fabric on each side. Fingertips gliding over the lace and silk of a deep satin dress, Namjoon gulped as he tried not to ponder on who these dresses could have once belonged to. Hand pulling back as he lets the fabric go, Namjoon does his best to not think about why they would be hidden at the Alpha’s estate in the first place.
Namjoon reasoned it’d be better to leave some mysteries unsolved, lest his ego be hurt by some unfavorable truth.
But truth be told, as Namjoon turned to step back into his room and shut the closet doors behind him, the Omega couldn’t help but be curious the longer he spent walking around the room. The touches in the decorations and fixtures he’d seen all around him ...were feminine; the colors and material giving off a sense of femininity and softness he hadn't known since he was a child living in his mother's house.
Lump forming in his throat as he turned towards his bed, Namjoon sighed as he shook the thoughts running wild in his head; a sense of worry and hesitation clouding his mind briefly as he took a deep and calming breath to steady his nerves.
Taking a few steps forward, Namjoon stopped until he reached the foot of the bed, his body moving automatically as he turned to sit amongst the plush covers spread out before him. Small grunt pushed past his lips as his body finally relaxed from what was probably the worst and the best day of his life, Namjoon let himself go as his body and limbs quickly went lax; his back meeting the mattress in seconds as his body sank into the soft material below.
Laying there surrounded by the silk and satin covers, Namjoon sighed as his eyes closed and his breathing slowed; the sound of his heartbeat thudding softly in his ear the only sound to be heard as he willed his Omega to calm down.
It was here, amongst the comfort and silence of his new home, that Namjoon began to think.
It was here his mind decided to steal any semblance of peace he could ever have.
Because really, how was he supposed to live like this when it was so different from anything he’d known before?
And more importantly, how was Namjoon supposed to survive Jungkook in all his glory?
Cursing softly as he shifted to move on his side, Namjoon groaned as a flurry of questions ran rampant in his mind; sleep now certainly impossible as he lost track of time. Eyes snapping shut as uncertainty gnawed at him, Namjoon lay in bed as his worries left him restless and uneasy.
He hoped in the morning, things would be clearer to him.
He hoped in the morning, he’d know what to do.
Darkness starting to creep behind his eyes, Namjoon knew it was an easier thing said than done But what else could the Omega do now but hope?
He figured it was worth a try anyway.
Even if he didn't really believe in it.

Days blur past as they spent longer and longer afternoons in each other’s company; Their search going far and wide as they spent hours pouring over maps of where Namjoon’s pup could potentially be.
Sometimes, Namjoon would find himself starting alone somewhere in the house yet somehow ending the day with Jungkook's company somewhere else. It was odd to have him around so often but Namjoon figured he didn't really mind it. As the days wore on and time seemed to stand still, Namjoon realized that he was actually growing quite fond of the Alpha and all his quirks.
But of course, the omega was quick to think nothing of it; the fear of falling for someone he didn't even know, sending a shiver down his back on most nights he lay awake in bed.
Despite his best efforts though, It's only a few weeks later when he finds himself sitting alone in the library one afternoon that Namjoon can't help but wonder if the Alpha ever felt the same way he did whenever they were alone. Eyes unfocused as his attention slipped from the pages of a worn book, Namjoon began to wonder if Jungkook ever felt butterflies in his stomach whenever Namjoon was around or if his hands ever felt as clammy as Namjoon's own whenever they sat together for meals.
Mouth pulling into a frown as he fidgeted in his seat, Namjoon pushed the thoughts away as he returned to his work with a huff; the silly notions and ideas roaming in his head only growing louder and louder the more the days wore on. Sticking to his side of the mansion as he looked for ways to distract himself, Namjoon did his best to make sure there was always a wall between the two; an air of unwavering coldness always emanating from him as he fought the constant warmth Jungkook always seemed to provide.
Trees starting to turn vibrant colors as the sky above grew darker with the changing season, Namjoon figured he was doing a good enough job as any; a distance now established between them whenever they found themselves bent over books together or when they exchanged fleeting glances when they thought the other wasn't looking.
It was a game of cat and mouse and Namjoon foolishly believed he was the one winning.
Or that is until one quiet evening, Namjoon finds himself sitting across the Alpha for dinner; a pink-hued silk gown he’d never in his life been able to afford now sitting snugly on his frame as he sat at a distance from the royal with a frown on his lips and a furrow between his brows.
You see, It’d been a long week; one much longer than the rest without any news from Jungkook’s men and Namjoon was sure he was nearing the end of his patience.
Burned out and depleted after countless days of looking for what felt like a needle in a haystack, Jungkook had sat back and suggested the two have dinner in the dining hall; a gentle smile pulling at his lips as he watched Namjoon weigh his options before finally sighing and giving in to the prince’s invitation.
Now many hours later, as Namjoon sat watching dinner being served on silver platters that gleamed brighter than the stars above, the Omega hummed deeply as the air filled with the sharp aroma of spices and honeysuckle. Eyes falling shut absentmindedly, Namjoon could swear the smell almost reminded him of home; the warmth from the nearby fireplace made his Omega almost purr as he fell back farther into his seat. Shoulders dropping with a breathless huff, Namjoon sighed as he let himself absorb the rich fragrance around him; his chest growing warm as his limbs began to unwind and finally relax against his seat.
Only Namjoon’s contentment at the sight of his meal and his grand surroundings didn’t last him long; his relaxed demeanor quickly replaced by that all too familiar and steadily growing guilt nestled deep in the back of his mind.
Unfortunately for him though, it wasn’t the first time Namjoon had felt this way, and he suspected it wouldn’t be the last.
You see, Namjoon had been feeling this guilt for days now; it had grown bigger and bigger as the days blurred past and the more time he spent basking in the Alpha’s presence, the more he was unable to bear it. So now, as he found himself sitting at the dinner table with his fingers fidgeted nervously with the edge of the silk napkin in his lap, Namjoon felt his brows crease with worry as he grew unsure of what to do next.
Because, honestly, how could he possibly reveal the secret that was consuming him at that very moment?
Eyes snapping open as he eyed the Alpha sitting across from him, Namjoon gulped as his mouth suddenly felt dry; his chest growing tight as he stared at the prince with worry. Of course, Namjoon knew he’d been keeping something from the prince; knew from the start he would have to sooner or later share with the Alpha just what it was he was keeping hidden away.
But as his eyes traced over the Alpha's unsuspecting features and spotted Jungkook’s smirk from where he sat across the table, Namjoon found that he couldn't bring himself to do it; knew he didn't have the courage to share the one secret he’d never once shared before.
Gaze leaving the Alpha as it fell towards his lap, Namjoon clutched his hands tightly as he did his best to keep the anxiety, guilt, and fear he was currently feeling from seeping into his scent. It was almost as if the secret he was holding was like a heavy cloak around his shoulders; each moment he delayed revealing it somehow adding another layer to its suffocating weight.
Brows creasing as his meal was finally done being served, Namjoon chewed his bottom lip as he felt a throbbing pain start to grow behind his right eye; the telltale signs of a growing migraine making him internally groan as he reached for his spoon to finally dig in.
Moving slowly as the clinking of cutlery and the soft murmur of conversation faded away, Namjoon did his best to enjoy his food; the weight of his secret momentarily pushed to the back of his mind as it slowly threatened to eat him alive. Sighing deeply the moment an explosion of flavor erupted over his tongue, Namjoon could only hope his night would improve the longer his night wore on.
But like many cases beforehand, Namjoon’s internal situation doesn’t get any better.
If anything, it only seems to get much worse.
A shame he realizes too late when it spirals further out of his control.
It was not until halfway through their meal that Namjoons calm facade started to finally slip; his expression growing pinched as he shifted in his seat more often than usual. It seemed the more he looked at Jungkook, the more his resolve seemed to crumble. Brows furrowing as he sighed, Namjoon cursed under his breath as each passing second felt like an eternity; his hand clutching his spoon tightly in his grasp as he grappled with the internal battle raging inside him.
Heart racing as he struggled to steady his breath, Namjoon wondered how long he could survive going on this way; the Alpha’s casual demeanor doing little to ease his sudden and growing anxiety.
Of course, the prince couldn't be blamed, not really. Not when it was solely Namjoons fault he was feeling the way he was; his stomach turning into knots as every bite of food felt almost too dry for him to swallow as every flicker of Jungkook's smile felt like a reminder of the inevitable confrontation the Omega had yet to hold.
Fighting off a frown the more he ate, Namjoon did his best to nod along to the words Jungkook was uttering; his frustration growing by the minute as he quickly became unfocused and unable to hear the more he tried to follow along. Mind racing as he eventually set down his spoon with a defeated sigh, Namjoon did his best to keep his secret buried beneath the facade of calm he was trying and failing to portray.
Hands now laying limp in his lap as his fingertips grew cold and clammy, Namjoon frowned as his body betrayed his inner turmoil; his world in an upheaval as he sighed deeply before forcing a smile whenever Jungkook’s gaze flickered his way.
He didn’t know how long he stayed like this, a pained smile plastered on his face whenever the conversation turned back to him but Namjoon knew it’d been long enough for his meal to go cold and his composure to finally wear thin.
Thankfully, his means of escape made itself known just in the nick of time.
Spotting the prince finally lay down his utensils and push his plate away a few moments later, Namjoon grew hopeful he could finally excuse himself from the table; his feet itching to lead the way out of the hall as he sat up straighter in his seat.
However, as Namjoon leaned forward in his chair, he was abruptly caught off guard when the prince cleared his throat and settled back into his own chair; A sudden question rolling off the Alpha's tongue making Namjoon stutter as he struggled to keep his smile steady.
“Namjoon, I hate to pry, but... is something on your mind tonight?” the prince asked as he eyed the Omega closely and Namjoon swore he felt the room spin as the question threw him for the most unexpected loop.
And gods, what on earth was Namjoon supposed to do now? With his heart pounding loudly in his ears, Namjoon could only pray that the Alpha couldn’t hear the frantic rhythm from where he was seated.
The Omega was certain that even if he could explain, he wouldn’t know where to begin.
It's a shame then, when his lips betray him before any other part of him can get the chance to do so, much to Namjoon's own startled surprise.
“O-oh? I'm sorry Jungkook, have I seemed too occupied? It must be the long hours, I'm afraid. I've spent too much time pouring over a book or two but no worries your grace, I'm fine,” Namjoon huffed out as he waved away the Alpha's concern; his voice light and apologetic as he let out a tired sigh.
Eyes never leaving his own, Namjoon watched as the Prince regarded him slowly; the edge of Jungkook's jaw growing sharp as he took a deep breath and tsked loudly throughout the room. Corners of his mouth usually curved into an easy smile, Namjoon stayed calm as he noticed the Alpha's lips slightly turned down just a touch. Heart skipping a beat at the sight, Namjooon blinked rapidly as he felt a rush of nervous heat rise to his cheeks.
He knew then it would only get worse from here.
And sadly, he’d been right.
“Namjoon....when we first met, we promised to share our truths with each other, remember? I would hate to have us stop doing so now,” Jungkook drew out slowly, the clear implication of what he meant ringing loudly in Namjoons ears as his fingers tightened around the edge of his seat.
And oh.
Oh no.
There was no avoiding it now. Namjoon realized he would have to speak his truth, even if he didn’t want to.
Still, the Omega made one last attempt to deflect, if only for his sake; his senses now on high alert as he quickly averted his gaze.
“Jungkook, I swear, It's nothing-,” he tried again but the Prince simply wouldn't have it, his voice cutting through the air before Namjoon could even finish forming his excuse.
“Namjoon….please. What is it? What's troubling you?” the prince asked gently, and Namjoon could swear he almost fell apart in that single moment.
Because really, how could he not when Jungkook seemed so sincere? How could he keep up his facade when the prince seemed so genuinely concerned for him?
Smile falling as his lips pulled into a frown, Namjoon sighed as his brow furrowed deeply; his shoulders sagging in a second as he let out a breath and sank deeper into his seat in resignation. It was then that Namjoon allowed the gates inside himself to open, his lips ready to voice his secret for the first time ever. Feeling his chest lighten from the burden of his guilt, Namjoon took a deep breath before glancing up to meet Jungkook's waiting gaze.
“Jungkook…I don't know how to start but….there's something I haven't told you……something I should have told you the minute we left that god-awful town.” Namjoon blurted out when the silence around him grew too thick to ignore. Pausing for a small second as he took a shaky breath, Namjoon tried his best to stay calm; his heart now thudding loudly in his ears as eyed the Alpha closely.
Blinking slowly as he sat up in his chair, Jungkook gestured for Namjoon to continue; the Alpha paying full attention to what Namjoon was struggling to say.
“And what's that Namjoon? Surely it can't be too bad right?” the alpha huffed out as he chuckled softly, but the humor did not reach his eyes; Jungkook's concern slowly grew by the minute the longer he watched the Omega shift uncomfortably in his chair.
Frown growing deeper as his eyes darted nervously around the room, Namjoon chewed his bottom lip as he clasped his hands firmly in his lap. He had no idea how to continue, had no idea if he should speak or simply make a run for it.
But as Namjoon took a deep breath to steady his nerves, Namjoon found himself once again betrayed; his lips moving on their own accord as his mind raced and the words spilled past his lips before he could even think to stop them.
And then it was done, his truth revealed in a matter of seconds.
“Jungkook I…I’m...I have…. I-,”
“You what, Namjoon-”
“I have powers!” he spat out abruptly, the words echoing loudly in the room as Jungkook's eyes widened as they met his own.
And oh ...So much for breaking the news easily, Namjoon groaned.
Much to the surprise of no one, the room fell silent as Namjoon’s confession hung heavily in the air. Heart now beating wildly in his throat, Namjoon was sure it was only a matter of time before the prince would jump to his feet and call for his guards to escort him off his property. Maybe he would even sentence Namjoon himself or worse, build a pyre right on the grounds to finally be rid of him.
But as he held his breath and clutched his seat with an iron grasp ... .Namjoon felt his brows furrow as Jungkook’s anger never came.
If anything, the prince stayed calm as he arched a questioning eyebrow Namjoon’s way; an unknown expression clouding his features as he regarded Namjoon closely.
“You have.....powers?” He asked slowly and Namjoon could almost die from the embarrassment that engulfed him fully; his head falling forward as he nodded and avoided the Alpha’s gaze as best as he could.
“Yes…….in theory,” he mumbled after a short pause and Jungkook’s soft yet surprised laughter was not the sound Namjoon was expecting to hear as the words fell slowly from his lips.
No, laughter had been the farthest thing from Namjoon's mind as he’d struggled to voice the truth he had finally said out loud.
It seemed the Prince was always full of surprises, even when Namjoon himself was the only one left to see them.
“I see. And what kind of powers are we talking about?” Jungkook asked after his laughter finally died down, a small and gentle smile pulling at his lips as he reached for his cup of wine sitting half full before him. Brows furrowing as he shook his head, Namjoon could only sit in stunned surprise as he tried to understand the Alphas' unlikely reaction.
Had he….missed something? Or had the Alpha not heard him clearly enough?
Blinking slowly in astonishment at Jungkook's composed demeanor, Namjoon repeated himself for what felt like the hundredth time; his words echoing in the quiet hall as the sky outside loomed dark and full of stars unseen by them.
“....You did hear me correctly, yes? That i….that I have powers?” Namjooon muttered as his expression grew pinched and the sigh that left Jungkook's lips was as soft as it was resigned; a look of curiosity filled Jungkook's features as the Prince took a sip from his glass before leaning forward to set it back down before him.
“Yes, Namjoon, I heard you perfectly. Now, these powers…care to explain?” he hummed softly and Namjoon could only stare wildly as static rang loudly in his ears, his lips parting slightly as he felt his mind go blank in an instant.
It was then Namjoon realized he had no idea how to proceed, his plan falling apart as he’d expected a more dramatic and angry reaction than the one he was currently receiving. Mouth opening and closing as he’d waited to fight against insults or glares, Namjoon sat silent as he was instead met with a prince who seemed unfazed and almost....understanding?
Gulping as his mouth went dry, Namjoon did his best to process the unexpected yet very welcomed calmness. He hated how long it took him to respond but finally, he managed to form a few words albeit not the ones he needed to say.
“You’re not...you’re not angry?” he asked after a moment, his voice barely above a whisper but Jungkook only shook his head gently as he crossed his hands in his lap; a reassuring smile touching his lips as he met Namjoon's gaze head-on. “No, Namjoon. I’m not angry. I’m just trying to understand.” he whispered softly and it was the way he spoke that had Namjoon almost losing whatever composure he had left; the words hitting him hard as he flinched slightly in his seat.
Breath stuttering as he felt the edges of his eyes start to burn, Namjoon took a second to collect himself; the genuine care in the Alpha’s tone one he had never been able to experience before. Feeling a wave of relief mixed with surprise, Namjoon released a breath he hadn't known he’d been holding back; his Omega whining in the back of his mind as he felt his body relax and his scent slightly spill into the space around him.
Quickly enveloped in the scent of fresh apples and vanilla, Namjoon felt himself let go of the fear he had been carrying from the moment he had left his town. He had braced himself for a storm of emotions and had mentally prepared for the worst, but Jungkook’s calm acceptance was the last thing he had expected to face tonight. After being on guard for so long, Namjoon knew It was a burden that had put more weight on his already heavy shoulders but now? To hear something so kind from someone so powerful?
Namjoon was sure he’d just been blessed.
And honestly, the experience was both deeply comforting as it was highly disorienting.
Leave it to Jungkook to be the cause of Namjoons distress, albeit in a good way for a change.
"Namjoon? Would you like not to talk about it? If it's too much to explain you don't have to-," Jungkook muttered after Namjoon failed to answer, a stretch of silence filling the room as the prince shifted nervously in his seat.
Thankfully, the sound of the Alpha's voice is all it takes for Namjoon to break out of his trance; a heavy sigh leaving the Omega's lips as he shook his head wildly before running a hand through his hair as he sat straighter in his seat.
"No, no it's ok, it's just…It's complicated... or well, it's a long story," he said tiredly but Jungkook only tsked loudly in response.
“Namjoon…I'm sorry but if you haven't noticed…,” Jungkook scoffed as he gestured to the open and empty space around them, the small fire now a rubble of low-burning embers sitting at their feet. “We tend to have a vast amount of time on our hands,” he teased, a surprised and small smile blooming on Namjoon's lips making the Alpha chuckle as Namjoon slowly shook his head.
“That's not funny,” the omega spat out as he shook the hair out of his eyes, his brows furrowing in amusement and uncertainty as Jungkook shrugged before leaning forward in his seat. Watching him closely as his expression morphed into confusion, Namjoon sat with bated breath; his fears looming in the back of his mind as he wondered what the Alpha would say next.
Only when Jungkook spoke again, it was not exactly what Namjoon expected; his fears almost baseless as the Alpha stared at him with wonder and not the scorn he’d been expecting and waiting to see.
“So… these powers. Are they….unnatural?” The prince drawled out slowly and Namjoon could almost swear the Prince was excited for Namjoon to explain; a sigh of relief and pure astonishment slipping past the Omega's lips as he shook his head before leaning back in his seat.
“If you are asking if I can fly or conjure up flames with a snap of my fingers then I'm sorry to say you should be quite disappointed,” Namjoon huffed and the Omega bit back a laugh as the Alpha laughed loudly at his jest, the bright smile blooming on Jungkook’s face making Namjoon’s chest grow warm in seconds.
“Alright, alright. Then tell me, what's this power that has you so spooked to even share it with the likes of me?” Jungkook hummed, his voice low but warm as he leaned back in his seat to catch the Omega's every word.
Blushing from the sudden attention, Namjoon cleared his throat as he fidgeted where he sat; his gaze turning towards the fireplace as he eyed the flickering flames intently.
“W-well, It’s not something I’ve talked about with anyone before. You see, sometimes, but not always…I can feel what others are feeling. I can touch them with my hands and-...and see flashes of their lives, their wants, their dreams. It's like a switch I can't turn off …but that's nothing to what I learned I could do when I got older.” Namjoon huffed out as his words slipped past his lips easily; his voice falling to a whisper as he kept his gaze trained on the flames.
Jungkook’s eyes widened in interest, but he remained calm. “What…could you do? I mean, when you got older?” he asked after a brief pause, his smile gone as he was immediately enraptured by Namjoons revelation. Eyes focused as he ran his gaze over the Omega’s features, Jungkook waited as Namjoon tsked before the Omega ran a hand through his hair, his limbs now suddenly tense.
Ears straining to catch every word, Jungkook did his best to follow along; a deep need to know taking root inside him as Namjoon kept his gaze staring straight ahead.
“When I got older…instead of just the touch…I…I started making little wisps of light from my fingertips. Nothing too big or amazing. Just little spindles of light that healed me whenever I got hurt….the older I got and the more hurt I was, the better I got at it.” Namjoon muttered as he shrugged, the words echoing silently between them as Jungkook caught on to the meaning behind the omega's words.
Blood suddenly running hot beneath his skin, Jungkook did his best to not linger on how or why the Omega would have to heal himself throughout the years. He thought it better for his and his Alpha’s sanity to leave some questions unanswered, even if he was dying to ask them himself.
Gulping as he nodded slowly, Jungkook leaned forward in his chair as he gestured towards where Namjoon was sitting; his brows furrowing as he urged the Omega to go on with his story.
Turning to meet his gaze, Namjoon could only nod as he took a shaky breath; the words spilling from his mouth as if they’d been waiting years for this moment to finally be out in the open.
Humorless chuckle reaching his lips, Namjoon figured it was probably exactly that reason that had him talking in the first place.
Funny how these things tended to happen, he mused.
“When it first happened…I didn't know what to do or who to even tell….I was young and I hadn't even presented yet so… I kept quiet. I stayed like that for a while, kept to myself mostly but when I finally dared to tell someone….I learned the hard way to never share anything with anyone ever again.” Namjoon spat as his hands balled to fists in his lap, his eyes unfocused as he played a memory behind his eyes.
Heartbeat thudding loudly in his chest as he delved into his past, Namjoon took a steadying breath as Jungkook shifted nervously across from him; the sight of Namjoon's distress making his Alpha grow unsettled as he willed himself to remain as calm and cordial as possible.
It was probably the first time the Prince thought it was an easier thing said than done but thankfully, Jungkook managed.
“And why is that? What happened, Namjoon?” He asked slowly when he could speak again, his voice matching the Omega’s careful tone as Namjoon was nothing but quick to comply. Eyes blinking rapidly as if to chase away the memory from deep within his mind, Namjoon gulped as he struggled to find the right words to say; his body growing hot as he voiced a pain he’d never once shared before. Across from him, sitting as stiff as a statue as he listened to every word, Jungkook waited for as long as Namjoon needed him to; a sliver of comfort in his expression the final push Namjoon needed to finally spill the betrayal he’d gone through so long ago.
It was then that Namjoon realized no matter how old the wounds may be, they still stung like new once you picked at the scars left behind.
He’d learned that the hard way, it seemed.
“The town…the people who live there…..you saw it yourself. They don't take kindly to change…or differences.” Namjoon spat out as he frowned, his eyes turning back towards the fire as he explained. “I had just gotten over a small preheat and I was in a rough place. I couldn't go to my parents most times and there was only one other person in the house I could turn to so ...I told our housekeeper. Or I was forced to anyway since she caught me in my room. I had begged her not to tell anyone yet. I cried and pleaded with her….I was only 16 at the time. I was more a pup than a full Omega but no one ever saw me that way. Honestly, It was naive of me to think she’d keep something like that a secret.” Namjoon shrugged as he chuckled humorlessly, his eyes glued to the fire as his lips pulled into a thin and long frown.
Expression darkening immediately, Jungkook stayed quiet as anger bloomed deep inside him; his Alpha stifling a growl as he urged Namjoon to keep going. Eyes slightly unfocused as he kept his voice steady, Namjoon took a deep breath as he kept his gaze trained straight ahead.
“She didn't keep it to herself long though. My parents found out the next day and well….they already thought of me as a freak so the news of my powers was ultimately the last nail in my coffin as their son. A week later they cut all ties with my name and shipped me off to be schooled and eventually married off somewhere and well ... .you know all the rest,” Namjoon sighed as he shifted back in his seat, the room deathly silent as he stared off into the flames.
And so, Namjoon’s truth was finally laid bare, exposed for all to see but gods did it hurt Namjoon to say it out loud as much as it hurt Jungkook to hear it.
Alas, it was a truth that couldn't be avoided and it was a truth that wouldn’t spare anyone pain.
Frowning as he could see the weight of Namjoon's memories pressing down on him, Jungkook felt his chest grow tight as he glanced down at his own hands; his knuckles almost white as he formed fists to rest along his side. Sitting motionless for a moment as he got lost in his thoughts, Jungkook blinked slowly as he struggled to find the right words to say
But really, what could he say to help fight the weight of Namjoon's confession hanging heavily between them?
Finally, after what feels like an eternity, Jungkook breaks the silence; his voice low but full of warmth as his troubled expression softened.
“Namjoon I….I can't even imagine how hard that must have been for you. I'm sorry your town failed you the way they did, you deserved better than that." Jungkook muttered as he spoke, his voice gentle but firm as his words echoed around them. Head snapping in the Alpha's direction as if startled out of some deep thought, Namjoon frowned as he moved his lips to speak; the action rendered useless once the Alpha quickly held up his hand in order to speak again.
“But they were wrong. I don't think you're a freak Namjoon ...I don't think someone like you can be anything short of special and one of a kind,” Jungkook whispered as his voice turned rough, his words barely heard over the fire still dancing gently beside them.
And oh…..oh, Namjoon had not been expecting that in the slightest.
Least of all from an Alpha he’d only just met a couple of days ago under extremely harsh circumstances.
Feeling his cheeks burn a deep crimson as his eyes widened, Namjoon thought it safe to say the world was full of surprises.
He could only thank the gods he was forever on the receiving end of them.
"....You know," Namjoon began, his voice soft but tinged with a light, teasing tone, “You surprise me more and more each day. Who could have known I’d be saved by such a kind and likely Prince?” Namjoon chuckled as he felt the tension from earlier ease out of his bones, his lips pulling into a gentle smile as he bowed his head before sinking back into his chair.
Before him, his eyes twinkling brightly as he leaned forward slightly, Jungkook chuckled louder as a sudden air of confidence rolled off him.
“You forgot to add handsome, brave, and all-knowing but I'll take the compliment either way,” he huffed out, the sound of Namjoons scoff echoing throughout the room as the prince broke out into boisterous laughter.
Rolling his eyes as the air of tension finally dissipated, Namjoon shook his head as he gestured wildly before him.
“Ugh, prince or not, you're still an Alpha. Consider that my last compliment ever,” Namjoon groaned as the Alpha gasped in exaggerated shock, the sound of their voices soon echoing throughout the room as they began to tease each other the longer they sat amongst the shadow of the far-off flickering flames.
And really, as they spent the rest of their night in each other's company, the pair grew closer as they grew comfortable enough to share more of themselves; the Omega soon learning more about the Alpha than he knew possible and vice versa. By the time their cups were empty and their fires burned low, the pair quickly found themselves not wanting to part; their conversation filled with quiet voices as they shared enthusiastically with each other the more the night grew long.
Soon moving to sit in front of the fire that now burned lower than it had before, Namjoon eyed the Alpha as he shared stories from his youth and more; the Omega soon added to the mix when prompted to share what little fond memories he had of his own. Sitting in the warmth and comfort of Jungkooks presence, it's not until the sky started to brighten that Namjoon realized he wouldn't mind spending more of his nights this way; his face growing warm at the idea of talking with the Alpha until the sun set and rose high in the morning.
Chest growing tight as he shelved the sudden realization away, Namjoon let himself be swept away by the comfort Jungkook provided him; the Omega’s smile faltering only slightly as he grew more than sure that a moment as sweet as the one he’d just shared with the prince was one he shouldn’t hope to get used to.
Because beyond all else, Namjoon knew their arrangement. Knew exactly what they had agreed to do and what they had discussed from the very beginning.
Namjoon and Jungkook were solely friends and nothing more.
This moment they shared would and could never happen again.
And yet….a week later, it did.
And this time, Namjoon wasn't the only one left reeling.
This time, he found himself accompanied in the fall.

Life was funny in the way it could take you places.
For example, Namjoon hadn't thought he’d find himself standing in the prince’s study that evening, and yet there he was; a mess of maps and hastily written on parchment laying in disarray across the Alpha’s desk and floorboards. He’d been called here on Jungkook's orders; the Alpha’s men wasting no time in whisking him away from his daily duties and escorting him the whole way with an urgency that did not bode Namjoon well.
Trying his best to focus on the path before him as he was shuffled about, the Omega did his best not to wonder about what could warrant the Alpha’s sudden protection or what the tension in the air could possibly mean for him.
It’s a task that proved hard to follow when he finally entered Jungkook's study; the expression clouding the Alpha's features making a sick and uneasy dread sink deep into Namjoon's stomach.
He figured whatever news the Alpha was about to share with him could be nothing good if Jungkook's frown was anything to go by.
A thought that was proven true the minute the Alpha shuffled forward and cleared his throat to finally speak.
“I'm sorry to be so sudden but…it seems my spies don't have any recent reports to share with us at the moment. Even with the efforts we’ve put out since we arrived, there's nothing they can find or hear. They’ve tracked towns, small posts, and a couple of taverns on trading roads ... but there's no mention of a lost pup or any deals under your son's or past Alpha’s name. I'm afraid I have no worthy news to share with you and for that I am sorry.” Jungkook hummed as he leaned forward in his chair, his lips set into a deep scowl as he tossed a half-torn paper onto the pile already waiting on his desk.
Equally deep frown now growing on his lips, Namjoon shuffled forward and let himself fall into the empty seat by the Alpha’s desk, his brows furrowing in deep thought as he reached for the torn parchment Jungkook had discarded.
“There’s no need to apologize to me, I'm afraid having no good news is a symptom we both now share.” Namjoon hummed as he sighed deeply, his hand clutching the paper tighter in his grasp as he felt the Alpha’s gaze quickly land on him.
“How so?” he asks a bit confused and if it’d been any other situation, Namjoon was sure he would've been endeared, if not completely smitten and flustered by the disheveled and concerned Alpha now sitting before him.
Shrugging as he shook his head, Namjoon let the paper fall from his grasp and land amongst the others discarded on the floor; his eyes soon set on the ground as he went over the past few days in his head.
“I tried some spells, a few tracking enchantments and such but…no matter what I tried it seems the gods refused to grant me any sight or clue as to where my son could be. Even now, it's hard not to feel like a complete and total failure before you.” Namjoon spits out as he bites back a curse; the sudden burning in his eyes letting him know of the impending tears threatening to fall at any moment's notice.
Biting back the urge to hiccup and cry, Namjoon tried his hardest to keep his composure in the now quiet room; his scent threatening to sour and spill as he shut his eyes as tight as he could manage. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Namjoon was sure there couldn't be anything worse than breaking down before the Alpha whom he now held in such high regard.
But try as he might to stay calm and at peace, Namjoon quickly figured if he was going to fall apart then this was as good a time as any.
Thankfully Jungkook surprised him for what felt like the hundredth time; the Alpha springing from his seat in record time as he felt the other's scent shift and grow bitter in the air.
Jumping slightly in his seat, Namjoon is startled out of his thoughts when the silence in the room is broken by the sound of wood against wood; the Alpha’s chair pushed back abruptly as Jungkook stood and quickly came to move out from behind his desk. Eyes snapping open as he followed Jungkook's movements, Namjoon felt his lips part in surprise as the Alpha came to a stop right before him; the air suddenly thick with tension as Jungkook sighed before bending down to rest on one knee.
Taking the Omega’s free hand into his own, Jungkook licked his lips before speaking; the space between them full of things unspoken as he finally met Namjoon's bewildered yet curious gaze.
“Namjoon, you are not a failure. We’ll find him, I swear it on my honor. I will find your son, Omega,” he whispered vehemently, the weight of the world behind each of his words as Namjoon inhaled sharply and tightened his hold around the Alpha's hand in his own.
And maybe it's the way Jungkook looks at him in that small moment; the way the Alpha’s gaze shines with such intense sincerity, that has Namjoon speechless as he gulps and only manages to nod his head in response.
Because It's at that moment as their gazes meet that Namjoon realizes he doesn’t doubt what Jungkook was promising him.
Not for a second.
Namjoon didn’t doubt the prince and as he blinked away the tears now sliding down his face, Namjoon knew he finally had someone he could trust.
Two weeks later, as if by some well-timed miracle, the world gives Jungkook the chance to keep his promise.
And Namjoon couldn't be more grateful for it in the least.

It’d been a day just like the one before it; nothing special about it or what there was to do on that day's agenda. Namjoon had woken up and readied himself for the day like usual; his outfit a beautiful crisp blue dress that rested lightly above his heels and felt snug underneath his deep blue corset to match.
Humming to himself softly as he’d tied up his hair, Namjoon had taken his time strolling down the long corridors as he’d headed towards the library; the sky outside a brilliant blue littered with stunning white clouds and pitch black birds in every direction. Pushing the library doors open with a soft grunt, Namjoon was quick to set about working around the pile of books he had yet to pour over; his eyes scanning over several torn and yellowed pages as the sun rested above the horizon.
Limbs moving on their own as he wiped away small mites of falling dust, Namjoon maneuvered through the mess of unopened scrolls, herbs, and trinkets littered around him and made his way to the middle of the room.
It was there, as he opened a scroll detailed with old trading passages around the castle grounds, that Namjoon’s day took a turn for the worst.
Nose almost brushing the old weathered parchment as the sun dipped lower in the sky, Namjoon found himself quickly startled out of his thoughts as the library doors soon started to shake with the sound of approaching footsteps. Floor vibrating as multiple thuds quickly echoed down the hall, Namjoon felt his brows furrow as he frowned; the sound of creaking mahogany ringing in his ears as his body tensed and leaned forward in his chair.
Waiting with bated breath as he eyed the shaking doorway, Namjoon moved slowly as he reached for a discarded letter opener he’d used earlier that day; the late evening sun gleaming against the sharp silver edge as Namjoon shifted uneasily in his seat. Unfortunately for him though, a letter opener and a pile of dusty books were as far as the Omega would get in terms of protecting himself; his hands clutching the metal tightly as he heard the heavy steps come to an abrupt stop right outside the library doors.
Taking a shaky breath as he braced himself for the worst, Namjoon barely had enough time to think of what to do before the library doors were suddenly thrown open; a resounding Baang! echoing throughout the room as the Omega yelped in surprise.
Eyes widening as the doors crashed against the walls; Namjoon quickly jumped to his feet as the thundering sound of footsteps entered the room and echoed all around him. Unopened scroll falling to the ground as he stood frozen amidst the commotion, Namjoon had barely enough time to register what was happening before the scent of agitated Alpha hit him head-on; his gaze finally landing on a familiar face amongst the armored and stoic crowd in seconds.
Jungkook.
Brows furrowing as he shook his head in confusion, Namjoon wondered what the Alpha could possibly be up to to warrant such an entrance. Judging by the way Jungkook's eyes were narrowed and his lips were pulled into a deep and taunt frown, Namjoon quickly surmised it couldn't be anything good to begin with.
Turns out, he’d been right.
“Jungkook?! What are you-,” he tried once he could speak but the prince was quick to cut him off; Jungkook's voice almost on the edge of breathless as he shook his head before pushing past his guards and taking a few steps his way.
“Namjoon, I’m sorry to barge in but…we found him. We found your son,” he spits out hurriedly as his voice cuts through the air and it's all Namjoon hears as he feels his breath still in his lungs almost immediately.
World coming to a complete stop around him, Namjoon could only blink as he stared at Jungkook dumbly; his tongue heavy as he stumbled over his words and tried to process what the prince had just said.
“Y-you what?! You…found him?!? oh-oh, my god's Jungkook I-,” he stuttered out brokenly but Jungkook cut the Omega off again as he stepped closer to him; a tinge of impatience seeping into his tone as he eyed Namjoon intently.
“Wait Namjoon, I-....there's more.” he huffed out slowly and the words are said seriously enough it has Namjoon reeling in seconds; his words of joy and relief dying on his lips as his growing smile falters and dies almost instantly.
Because oh….was something….wrong? Had something happened to his Hyeunie that caused the Alpha to act in such a way?
Or worse, had they been too late to save him?
Lips parting as he inhaled sharply, Namjoon felt his chest grow tight as his eyes flew wide with alarm. Moving as his once calm scent now grew haywire with distress, Namjoon took a hurried step forward as he reached towards the Alpha standing before him.
“Jungkook? What's.. what's wrong!? Is my son ok?!” he cried out fiercely, the look in his eye burning bright as a deep and wild part inside of him began to rear its head; the feral and protective side of his Omega awakening almost instantly at the possibility of his pup being hurt in any way.
Noticing the way his scent changed and the fire in his gaze grew dark, Jungkook shook his head wildly as he reached out to grasp the Omega's arms; Namjoon's limbs trembling ever so slightly under his touch as Jungkook took a deep breath to calm his own Alpha down.
“He's fine Namjoon, I promise… nothing’s happened to him, he's as fine as the day is good,” he muttered as he felt the Omega take a shaky breath, a look of confusion settling over his features as he looked up at the prince cautiously.
“Then…why-” he tried to ask but Jungkook shook his head again as his own features grew dark; his scent growing more agitated as his grasp tightened slightly around the other's arms. Lips pulled into a deep frown, Jungkook speaks carefully as his gaze meets Namjoons own.
“We found him in the presence of someone who causes me great concern,” the prince whispered into the small space between them, his words only making the Omega's anxiety spike as he scoffed in exasperation. “What…what do you mean?” Namjoon whispered once he’d found his voice again, his question barely audible as Jungkook gestured towards the men standing stiffly behind them.
“My men….they found your son with the Queen….my Stepmother-” he muttered as he tried to explain the situation but Namjoons words cut him off mid-sentence; the Omega's eyes staring right into his own as Namjoon shook his head and tsked in frustration.
“But Jungkook…wouldn't that be a good thing? I mean-,”
“No! Namjoon, it's not! It's far from it actually,” Jungkook spat as he shook his head and spoke harshly; the air filling with a dread Namjoon did not want to be addressed nor acknowledged the longer they stood staring at each other wildly. Mouth growing dry as he licked his lips nervously, Namjoon frowned as he shook his head in confusion.
“But…why? What's wrong with the Queen? Why can't my son be under her protection?” he asked hesitantly, the look in Jungkook's eyes making a tinge of fear bloom deep in the Omega’s gut as he noticed the Alpha's expression darken at the seemingly harmless question.
Leave it to Namjoon to piss off the only man he didn't want to see angry.
He figured some things just never seemed to change.
Closing his eyes tightly as the muscles in his jaw clenched, Jungkook took a deep and steadying breath; his patience wearing thin as he willed his heart to slow down and his scent from boiling over. Opening his eyes once he had things under control, Jungkook met Namjoon’s gaze and felt his chest tighten as he spotted the concern shining brightly in the other’s eyes. Blinking momentarily as he grew flustered, Jungkook cleared his throat as he stepped closer to Namjoon; his voice low and rough as he bent down to whisper against the Omega's ear.
Heartbeat running a thousand miles a minute, Namjoon held his breath as he strained to hear what the Alpha would say; his body vibrating with the urgent and all-consuming need to know the cause behind this entire ordeal.
Only when the Alpha finally did speak, did Namjoon quickly find himself wishing the prince had never spoken at all.
But unfortunately, the words are uttered all the same.
“Namjoon...your son can't be under her protection…because my Stepmother killed my Mother and she's looking to kill me too,” Jungkook revealed heatedly as his words rang loudly between them and Namjoon shivered as he felt his blood run cold; the words like ice in his veins as he felt the blood drain from his face in seconds.
And gods….what was he supposed to do now?
Staring into Jungkook's eyes as if he could find comfort there, Namjoon felt tears welling up in his own as he spotted the same panic and fear reflected in the Alpha's gaze.
It was only then the Omega realized with a start just how screwed his situation had just become.
Now more than ever.
Fuck.
