Chapter Text

sweet creature, when I run out of road, you bring me home

The final bell of the day echoed through the school halls, signaling the end of classes. Johnny and Daniel walked side by side towards the parking lot, their fingers casually entwined. The quiet between them was comfortable, filled with the easy contentment of being together.

Johnny glanced at Daniel, his heart still fluttering from the intensity of their last few days. There was a new sense of calm between them, a gentle assurance that everything was falling into place.

As they reached Johnny’s car, Daniel leaned closer, resting his head on Johnny’s shoulder. “What do you want to do tonight?” he asked, his voice soft and warm.

“How about we just hang out at my place? We could watch a movie or play some games. I’ll let you pick.”

Daniel’s eyes lit up mischievously. “Really? What if I choose another weird movie?"

"You better not, the last one was awful."

The drive to Johnny’s house was filled with the gentle hum of the radio. When they arrived, Johnny’s mom was bustling around, dressed up and looking a bit flustered. His step-dad, Sid, was by the door, adjusting his tie.

“Hey, you two,” Johnny’s mom said with a warm but hurried smile. “We’re heading out for dinner and a movie. It’s been ages since Sid and I had a night out.”

“Yeah, Mom. That sounds great,” Johnny said, trying to sound supportive despite the twinge of awkwardness he felt. “We’re just going to chill and watch a movie ourselves.”

Sid gave Johnny a reassuring nod. “Enjoy your evening. If you need anything, just give us a shout.”

“Thanks, Sid,” Johnny replied, giving him a small smile. It felt nice knowing that his mom and step-dad accepted him. There was no need to hide or be scared anymore; he felt like he could truly be himself.

Johnny and Daniel settled onto the couch in the living room. As Daniel flipped through movie options, Johnny glanced at him, captivated by the way his eyes lit up with enthusiasm. He eventually popped Full Moon in Paris into the player.

The movie started, but Johnny’s attention kept wandering. He was drawn in by Daniel’s genuine enjoyment, the way his laughter seemed to light up the room. Every shared glance and playful nudge was a reminder of how right this felt.

Midway through, Johnny shifted closer, wrapping an arm around Daniel’s shoulders. The other boy leaned into him, his warmth and the rhythmic rise and fall of his breathing creating a comforting, steady presence. For Johnny, these were the moments he’d been longing for—simple, unhurried, and filled with the kind of bliss he hadn’t known in a long time.

As the credits rolled, Daniel lifted his head a little to look up at Johnny, a small grin on his face. “So, what’s the verdict?”

“It was just as ridiculous as I expected."

Daniel’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Oh that' s a bit harsh. But let’s be honest, I think you secretly enjoyed it.”

"Maybe just a little. There’s something about watching these movies with you that makes them way more fun.”

Daniel’s gaze softened as he nestled closer. “I’m glad you think so. I had a great time tonight.”

Johnny reached up and gently brushed a strand of hair from Daniel’s face. “If someone had told me a year ago that I’d be here with a- and might I add, exceptionally beautiful boyfriend like you-I would’ve thought they were out of their mind. It’s hard to even imagine where I’d be now if you hadn’t come into my life."

Daniel’s smile widened, and he pulled Johnny in for a chaste kiss. "You really mean that? I reckon you would’ve figured things out on your own eventually. But I’m really glad I got to be here with you through it all. It means so much to me that we’re together now."

“It’s like… I’ve found something I didn’t even know I was looking for. Being here with you feels so natural, so right. This—us—feels like home. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

“Me neither. Here with you is exactly where I want to be.”

Daniel’s eyes grew heavy, and Johnny could see him starting to drift off. With a smile, his adjusted his hold, wrapping his arms around the other a little tighter, as if to say, I’ve got you. Daniel’s breathing slowed even more, and he snuggled closer, fitting perfectly in the crook of Johnny's arm.

“You know, you’re really cute,” Johnny whispered into the silence.

Daniel mumbled something unintelligible in response, his words slurring slightly as he slipped further into sleep.

The room fell into a gentle silence once more, the only sounds being their synchronized breaths and the occasional rustle of movement. Johnny’s eyes began to droop as he held Daniel close, feeling his own exhaustion settle in.

As sleep finally tugged at him, Johnny allowed himself to let go, knowing that just being here with Daniel—without pretense or pressure, simply existing together—was enough. This love, this life, this moment—it was enough. And so was he.

The end
