Chapter Text
The building's wreckage sprawled before Ed in a haunting silence, each step he took reverberating through the desolation. His HUD flickered intermittently, its cold data stark against the backdrop of devastation. Every corner, every shadow, seemed to echo the enormity of his loss.
Navigating through the ruins, Ed's exploration was both methodical and frantic. The silence around him was oppressive, broken only by the distant echoes of his own movements. Each fallen piece of debris, each shattered window, seemed to deepen his despair. His sense of dread grew with every step, mingling with a determination that burned like a flame in the darkness.
As he sifted through the debris, the HUD updated with a grim message: “SURVIVORS: NONE.” The weight of this realization hit him with the force of a tidal wave. The building, once a sanctuary, had become a graveyard. The emptiness around him was suffocating, and
Ed staggered under the crushing weight of his grief. He was alone—utterly and completely alone.
The oppressive silence and the stark truth of his solitude drove him to continue searching, though every discovery seemed to deepen his despair. It was during this desperate search that he noticed a disturbing new feature on his HUD. Corpses scattered throughout the wreckage were now classified as potential food sources. At first, the idea repulsed him. The thought of consuming the remains of those he had known was abhorrent.
However, as his hunger became more acute and his movements more puppet-like—jerky and unsteady—Ed could no longer ignore the severity of his condition. The energy he consumed was critical to maintaining his core’s functionality. Reluctantly, he began to feed on the remains, each act of nourishment accompanied by a fleeting surge of energy. His HUD displayed a new message: “NUTRITION INTAKE: RECALIBRATED.”
Each morsel brought a brief respite from his relentless hunger, but it also served as a stark reminder of his transformed state. His movements were less fluid, more mechanical, driven by an insatiable need to sustain himself. The hunger was a constant presence, gnawing at him as he continued his grim task.
In the midst of his despair, Ed’s focus sharpened. His grief and fear gave way to a cold, determined resolve. He began to sift through the rubble with renewed purpose, driven by a dark and burning anger. Amidst the ruins, he found his father's belongings—the very symbols of his past life and protection. The axe, heavy and worn, was a weapon of vengeance; the gun, reliable and potent, was a tool of justice.
His guitar, once a symbol of solace, was now a reminder of his past and a testament to his unyielding resolve. Though it seemed out of place among the weapons, it represented his will to fight back, to reclaim some semblance of his former self.
With the axe and gun secured and the guitar slung over his shoulder, Ed’s HUD displayed a new objective: “RETRIEVE PERSONAL WEAPONS.” Despite the lingering puppet-like movements caused by his low energy, his focus was unwavering. His purpose was clear: to exact revenge on those responsible for the devastation. Driven by a seething rage and the weight of his loss, Ed was prepared to face the nightmare head-on. The hunt for vengeance was about to begin.
The sun had vanished below the horizon, surrendering the city to the oppressive grip of night. Ed prowled through the ruins, his movements sharp and deliberate amidst the wreckage. The air was saturated with the scent of decay and the echoes of forgotten screams. His HUD flickered erratically, a grim reminder of the new, savage reality he inhabited—a reality where survival demanded a brutal adaptation to hunger and madness.
The traps he had meticulously set up over the past few days were now ready. Metal spikes, scavenged from the remnants of dismantled drones, lay hidden in the rubble, poised to strike. A deadly array of debris and sharp objects formed a spike trap at the entrance to an old apartment building. A concealed explosive device nestled beneath a pile of debris awaited its cue. Tonight, he would draw his nemesis—the murder drone responsible for the slaughter of his loved ones—into these deadly snares.
Ed's plan was nearly complete. For days, he had observed the murder drones’ spire, noting their flight patterns and behaviors. Tonight, he would bait his quarry into the lethal traps he had set. Every fiber of his being was consumed by a searing rage, driving him with the precision of a predator. He was determined to avenge the loss of everyone he had known and loved, and the thought of that murderous drone’s demise filled him with a dark, frenzied satisfaction.
As the night deepened, Ed took his position behind a crumbling wall, his breathing heavy with anticipation. The murder drone, identifiable by its menacing design, appeared on the horizon. With a cold, calculated motion, Ed activated his first trap. The rebar springs erupted with a metallic roar, launching deadly projectiles toward the drone. It dodged with frantic movements, but its wings were ripped apart in a storm of sharp metal.
The drone, now severely damaged, struggled to regain control. Ed’s eyes blazed with a feverish intensity as he watched the chaos unfold. The night was alive with the sounds of battle—the screeching of metal, the clatter of debris, and the high-pitched whine of the wounded drone.
Undeterred, the drone continued its relentless pursuit. Ed led it towards the second trap, a pit of spikes and jagged debris. As the drone plunged into the trap, a cacophony of metal and a sickening crunch filled the air. The drone’s limbs were twisted and broken, but it fought to drag itself out, its once-proud form now a mangled wreck.
Ed’s heart pounded with a wild rhythm, his sanity fraying at the edges. The final trap awaited, a hidden explosive device buried beneath rubble. He took a deep breath, his hands trembling with a manic energy as he activated the detonator. The explosion was deafening, the building disintegrating in a violent eruption. For a moment, the entire world seemed to dissolve into a blinding haze of dust and fire.
When the dust finally settled, the surviving drone—the one responsible for the carnage—emerged from the wreckage. Its form was barely recognizable, reduced to a grotesque shell of its former self. Missing limbs and a twisted frame spoke of the carnage it had endured.
Ed stepped into view, his face a mask of cold fury. He was a tempest of rage, the lines between vengeance and madness blurring into a chaotic dance. He retrieved his father’s axe and gun, the weight of the weapons grounding him in his singular purpose. The axe swung with a ferocious force, and the gun’s shots shattered the night with their finality.
As the final confrontation reached its peak, Ed’s mind spiraled into a frenzied haze. The symbol—a red eye with arrow-like tentacles—flashed across his HUD, a fleeting, disturbing image that seemed to pulse with a malevolent energy. The sight was almost hypnotic, and for a moment, Ed’s world narrowed to the frantic, fevered rhythm of his own vengeance.
The battle was over. The drone lay defeated, its once-terrifying form reduced to a broken heap. Ed stood over it, his breath ragged, his mind a whirl of manic triumph and underlying despair. The symbol on his HUD flickered again, a dark reminder of the chaos that lurked just beneath the surface of his psyche.
As he examined the aftermath, Ed's HUD displayed a new notification: a file folder labeled “Blueprints.” Intrigued, he opened it to reveal a collection of technical diagrams. The folder contained various schematics for murder drone parts: wings, claws, and even a headband with additional eyes—a feature that enhanced targeting capabilities. One blueprint, marked with a bold “INSUFFICIENT MATERIAL,” depicted a rocket launcher, its potential untapped due to the lack of resources.
The sight of the blueprints stirred something dark within Ed. The phrase “You are what you eat” echoed in his mind, and he realized that in order to fully access the blueprints, he needed more than just data. He had to consume the corpse of the fallen drone to integrate its advanced components into his system.
Reluctantly, Ed began the grim task. As he fed on the remains, the blueprints on his HUD seemed to come alive, their details sharpening and expanding. The gruesome act was both a necessity and a grotesque connection to the technology that had wrought his suffering. The blueprints were no longer just technical documents; they were a part of his new reality—a reality where his survival was tied to the very machines that had devastated his world.
With a mix of grim determination and unsettling clarity, Ed closed the folder. The knowledge contained within was both a weapon and a curse, a stark reminder of the brutal world he inhabited and the darkness that had consumed him.
