Chapter Text
If there is one word to describe Spencer when it comes to JJ, it's 'perceptive'. The whole team can be oblivious to what she was going through or feeling, but Spencer can always see through it. That's why he knew something was off when he, JJ, and Emily were at the precinct. The blonde kept scratching at her forearm, muttering curses and looking furtively at Emily now and then.
"Look, I know you two are head over heels for each other but you're making me feel like a third wheel here."
JJ nearly jumped out of her skin. Spencer was making his way towards her, a smirk on his face.
"It's nothing." JJ said quickly.
"Hmm." Spencer said dubiously, but let it drop.
The case was finished, but the team decided to stay at the hotel one more night given that they finished late. Spencer was lying on his bed, reading, when someone knocked.
"Spence?" JJ. Closing his book, the doctor went to open the door. The blonde was rocking back and forth, hands clasped behind her back.
"Uh, everything all right?"
JJ scratched her head. "Uh, it's about Emily."
Spencer raised an eyebrow. "Lovers' quarrel?"
The blonde shook her head. "Not directly. It's Sergio."
"Emily's cat? What about him? Come in."
The two of them went to Spencer's bed, JJ stretched above the covers while Spencer rested his head on the headboard.
"He's infuriating. Sometimes when I take home some files home-not that many to avoid detection- and work late when I can't sleep, he jumps on me and messes up my work, kicking the papers off the table. He sleeps on my side of the bed, or sometimes above my head. When I'm holding Emily from behind while we're asleep, he removes my hand or squeezes himself, no matter how small the gap is. He doesn't care whether I'm uncomfortable. And when Em and I are watching, he just jumps on Emily's lap. Or he just swipes at me for no reason."
"Wait a minute. Jennifer Jareau," Spencer said as he tried not to laugh, "Are you...are you jealous of a cat?"
"No, I'm not!" JJ protested. "I just hate it when Sergio deliberately makes my life hell. I can't even-" JJ froze and looked at Spencer. "Oh, my God. I am jealous of a cat."
Spencer lost it.
"Oh, this is rich." Spencer wheezed. "A human jealous of a mere feline."
"Swear that you won't say a word to Emily." JJ warned. "She's never going to let me live it down if she knew."
"On my life." Spencer promised, chuckling.
