You and me, together

Chapter 2: Afterlife

Summary:

They’re in the afterlife here. Ish.

I’ll edit and add more for the stuff I don’t really like but for now I’ll just post chapter 2

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Medkit woke up to an empty vast void, which was kind of bright. He looks around, confused. Hasn’t he died? What is this, the afterlife of something?

He spotted other demons wandering around, talking to others. He assumed they were also dead, as this place wasn’t alive to the real world.

He soon got up, pain starting to rush through his body again. He looked down to his torso, wondering if the injury was still there. There was still that massive hole through his stomach. He winced painfully. That’s a lot of damage.

Surprisingly, he didn’t feel any pain after that. It must’ve been from standing up so suddenly…

He starts to wander around, exploring the place. Once he got to a certain point, he then realized that:

This place was…kinda empty.

There wasn’t really anything that was exactly breathtaking, just a white endless void that expands for who knows what.

”Hey, ya new here?” One demon walked up to him and asked.

“U-uh…yeah? What is this place,” Medkit replied.

”This, my friend, is the Afterlife, where all the demons who died go here! Sorry it’s a bit empty for a newcomer like you, there’s just nothing here,” they laughed. “The reason why it’s so big is because there are just so many people in the real world, that it just wouldn’t hold if it wasn’t expanding forever!”

“Huh,” Medkit replied blankly.

”So…if you happen to make any friends here, I suggest you stick as a group because you can get lost here real fast!”

“Alright.”

“Oh, and also, any injuries you’ve faced will be shown here and will be permanent, just like my arm!” His arm was chopped off, only showing half of it and the bone. Medkit’s face scrunched up. That’s brutal.

”Welp, that’s all I have to say, good luck out there pal!” The demon said, soon later running back off to talk with their friends. (THAT THING FELT LIKE AN NPC HELP.)

…

“Well…I guess this is where I’ll be stuck here for the rest of my life. Just great,” Medkit sighed.

Subspace groaned, as he woke up to a bright light hitting his face. He hissed, trying to get it away but to his avail, it didn’t work. He soon slowly realized that this wasn’t no ordinary place.

“What the,” he said, weakly. He then shot up quickly as he was panicking, suddenly having to urge to feel if the bullet hole was there. It was, but he was confused. If he died, then how was he alive? He got up to get a clear look of the place, and of course, it was a huge empty white void.

Wait, there’s nothing here?

This felt like…almost a prison.

There’s nothing here.

Is this what pure hell is like?

The scientist spotted some other demons hanging out with each other and talking. He stared at them for a while. Are they dead like him? How did they die?

Wait, if other demons are here, then Medkit must be here too.

He starts to walk around fast, desperately trying to look for him.

He doesn't know why he is, he just wants to find him at least.

-

The doctor was sitting around, out of pure boredom thinking about his life choices. (Yes I know, very productive.)

He looked down at his massive injury, suddenly asking himself if his life was even worth his time.

What was that for?

Why did Subspace do such a thing?

Why did he hug me when we laid on the cold concrete?

Why did it feel so heartwarmi-

Medkit snapped out of his train of thought. Heartwarming? How silly of him. There's no way he would feel that over his sworn enemy.

He then soon noticed a very familiar figure walking towards him. It had four pairs of horns, which the colors were vividly pink. That was enough for him to recognize who it was.

“Subspace?” He called out.

“Meddy! Great to see you again!”

“If you’re here to try and kill me again, then there’s no point.”

“I know, I wasn’t planning to!!! I can’t even summon my gear here anyways!”

“I’m glad. If we could, this place would’ve been a disaster.”

“What are you implying?!” Subspace said, feeling a bit offended.

The constant bickering continued again, just like when before they died. They suddenly stopped, silence filled the air. Subspace laughed to himself, as well as the other. It made them think back to the good old times they’ve had similar conversations like this.

Subspace walked over and sat down next to Medkit hesitantly, hoping he wasn’t uncomfortable with it. Surprisingly to Subspace, he wasn't. In fact, the doctor didn't mind it at all. Medkit stared at Subspace for a long while before speaking up.

"So, what's this about, hm? Suddenly trying to find me?" He joked.

"How did you-" Subspace paused, not saying anything else. He looked down onto the ground, knowing that Medkit was indeed right.

Medkit had a question stuck in mind. "Why did you suddenly have the urge to kill me, anyway? Why have you never tried earlier? Why now?" The doctor asked.

"Well, I was just suddenly thinking back to our events back then," Subspace started, "I just found it infuriating how you just..left me alone like that, and we didn't get along either. We had different opinions after all."

"You don't know how lonely I felt after you ran away Medkit."

"You clearly know why I ran away, Subspace."

"Yeah, I know."

"I don't know what got to me, why I told them you were a traitor. I was...not in the right state of mind back then wasn't I? But I can't help it...those crystals, they're so powerful, and you rejecting my offer just made me...I don't know, angry?"

"Blackrock brainwashed you Subspace, they made you determined to make yourself worthy and become the head Blackrock scientist."

"...did they?"

They stayed silent, not wanting to bring up the conflict anymore. They really didn't want to fight at a time like this.

Medkit sighed, "Well, since we're dead, it doesn't really matter if we have a grudge on each other anymore, doesn't it?"

"...I haven't thought about that. " Subspace stated.

"Hey Meddy, while we're here, shouldn't we catch up with each other? It...has been a while." The scientist looked at him, waiting for an answer.

"...Sure, I wouldn't mind," Medkit said, quietly.

-

During their catch up session, Subspace happened to lean onto Medkit's shoulder, resting and talking about his problems, his inventions, his life. Medkit didn't mind. At this point they didn't care anymore. They were dead, after all. The doctor liked hearing the scientist ramble on all day, even if it meant it would cure his boredom in this hellish place called the afterlife.

They soon fell asleep one each other’s shoulders, not wanting it to end. They’ve missed each other’s warmth, they missed each other’s touch. They have missed the times where they’ve worked together. They didn’t want to let go anytime soon now. They needed each other, and they want to stick together, as far as this place goes. Medkit took one last look at the sleepy scientist before closing his eyes again and falling asleep.

Notes:

Idk if I’ll add more in the future
Maybe a sequel of some sort

Notes:

This is my first short story work on here kinda besides the other one where Medkit and subspace dance

I actually put a lot of effort into this idk why

This scenario just suddenly popped into my head when I was falling asleep :3
