Chapter 12: Trying Again

Chapter Text

“How can we be anything, Milk?”

Before she could even answer, Love cut her off.

“We aren’t even friends,“

Her voice wavering slightly. She sighed, running a hand through her hair.

“Let me refresh your memory, I’m still clearly not over your cousin.”

Milk’s face fell, the rejection hitting hard. Love’s words hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.

However, Milk tried to brush it off.

“You’re right.” Milk said, stuttering and shaking as she took another bite of her food.

No more words were exchanged between the two for the rest of the meal.

Milk started the engine, and the soft hum of the car filled the silence between them. They drove through the quiet streets, the city lights casting fleeting patterns on Love's face.

As they approached Love's dorm, the conversation from earlier still weighed heavily on their minds. Milk glanced over at Love, her expression a mixture of lingering sadness and resignation.

Love took a deep breath, her hand lingering on the door handle. She turned to Milk one last time.

“Take care, Milk.”

“You too, Love,”
She responded, her eyes not meeting hers, still feeling the rejection.

“Love, I’ll pick you up tomorrow?”
Milk asks, before Love could close the door.

“You can try.” She closed the door.

Love walked up to her dorm building, the sound of the car engine fading as Milk drove away, confused.

What does she mean by that?

The next day, Milk parked her car outside Love's dorm, a sense of optimism in her chest. She glanced at her watch and then at the dorm entrance, expecting to see Love appear any moment.

As the minutes turned into an hour, Milk's hope began to wane. She called and texted her multiple times, but there was no response.

Inside the dorm, Love was already long gone.
Earlier that morning, she had already called View to pick her up.

Back outside the dorm, Milk was still waiting. Frustrated and confused, she finally got a call back, but it wasn’t from Love. It was View.

“Hey, Milk, I picked Love up earlier. She said you weren’t awake,” View explained, her voice tinged with unease.

Milk sighed, leaning against her car. She ran her fingers through her hair.

“She didn’t even tell me. Thanks for letting me know, View.”

She hung up and started the car, driving away with a heavy heart. The road ahead seemed longer than usual, each turn reminding her of Love’s absence and the growing distance between them.

She knew she should’ve seen this coming. After all, she has done much worse to Love.

Milk rushed out of her last class at school, her mind racing as she sprinted towards the café.

Her backpack bouncing against her back with each hurried step. It was only a five-minute walk, but it felt like an eternity as she checked her watch, hoping she wasn’t too late.

Her heart pounded in her chest, from the anxiety of not knowing if Love would be there. As the cafe came into view, Milk quickened her pace, practically bursting through the door.

She scanned the room desperately, her eyes darting from colleagues to colleagues. Some of them glanced up at her sudden entrance, but there was no sign of Love. Her shoulders slumped in defeat as she realized Love wasn’t there.

Milk didn’t waste any time dwelling on her disappointment. She rushed back out onto the street, her mind already on the next step. She rushed back to her car and drove to a small flower shop nearby.

The bell above the door jingled as she entered, and she quickly picked out a bouquet of vibrant daisies.

“Those are beautiful. For a special someone?”

The florist asked with a warm smile as she handed over the flowers.

Milk nodded, handing over her card.
“Yeah, something like that.”

With the bouquet in hand, she dashed back to her car and sped off towards View’s house. Her grip on the steering wheel was tight, her knuckles white with tension. She barely noticed the familiar streets flying past, her mind solely focused on reaching Love.

Arriving at View’s house, she parked haphazardly and ran up to the door, ringing the bell with urgency. Footsteps approached, and View opened the door, looking taken aback.

“Milk? What are you doing here?” View asked.

Milk, out of breath and clutching the flowers, said, “I need to see Love. Is she here?”

Before View could respond, Love appeared behind her, her eyes widening in surprise.

“Milk?”

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice a mixture of confusion and curiosity.

“I needed to talk to you. I’m sorry for everything, and I didn’t want to leave things the way they were.”

Milk stepped forward, offering the bouquet as she closes her eyes, afraid of whats to come next.

Love looked at the flowers, then back at Milk, her expression softening.

Silence.

“No,”
