(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Dogday was in a slump.

After finding out that Catnap had feelings for him, he was mulling over what to do next.

He knew that, deep down, he feels the same way, but should he tell him?
If they got together, would it change anything?

He and Catnap would be happy together, and that’d be amazing, but would they stay together? And what would the other critters think?

Then, he gets an idea.

He gets out some scrap paper and his favorite orange pencil, and begins to write.

‘Dear Catnap…’

For the next hour or so, he scribbles and erases, trying to find the right words to respond to Catnap.

But… it just wasn’t coming to him, the way he wished it would...

After much scribbling and erasing, he’d at least gotten a first draft of it down.
He leaves the paper on his desk, and goes to the kitchen to get a snack, hoping it’d help him come up with some better words.

Little did he know, that someone was watching him from outside his open bedroom window.

A few minutes later, Dogday comes back with a plate of carrot sticks, walking over to his desk to revise his letter.

But… the letter was gone.

“W-wha- where did it go…?”
He says, nervous.

He noticed a faint scent of bubblegum in the air.

Then it hits him like a gong, making him drop the plate(Which was paper so it didn't break.)

Rae had taken Catnap’s letter and given it to him, so…

“NO.”
Dogday says, his entire body going cold.

He immediately dashes out the door, and toward Catnap’s house.

But little did he know, it was already too late.

~Mini transition~

Catnap was hanging out on the sofa and reading his favorite book, when he heard a knock on his door.

‘Who could that be?’
He thinks as he puts a bookmark in, getting up and walking over.

But when he answered the door, nobody was there.

However, he did notice a piece of paper by his feet.

‘What’s this…?’

He takes it in, sitting down at the table as he starts to read it.

‘Dear Catnap,

I just wanna start by saying this.
I do in fact, feel the same way you do.

I love you, Catnap.

You have the most beautiful eyes, and the most sparkling smile…
Your fur is so soft… and whenever you smile at me, or fall asleep on my shoulder or lap, it just makes my heart burst with happiness, and I wish those moments could last forever!

I’ve fantasized about being with you, holding you in my arms and kissing you until your lips fall off…

But, setting all the mushy love confession stuff aside, I need to say something else.

I’m scared.

Even though I love you, I don’t think I can ask you out.
I would love to be with you, but if we were together, I’m scared that the others might not approve, since we’re both guys…

Even if we were to secretly be together, they would probably find out, and then they’d be mad for not telling them.
Not to mention the gossip chain that’s been going through the valley lately…

And even if they did approve, I'm worried that if we were together, It might end in a bad breakup for one reason or another.

I sure hope we wouldn’t break up, but if we did, we would probably not be friends anymore, and I’d hate it more than anything if I lost your friendship, and you stopped talking to me, because I broke your heart.

Whatever, I need to redo this letter…

Lots of hugs,
Dogday”

When Catnap finished reading the letter, he was crying, his tears dripping onto the page.

Then, the door bursts open, making him jump.

“CATNAP!”

Catnap jumps and shrieks, looking to the door.

There was Dogday, wide eyed and looking at the letter he was holding.

“I…”
He says.

“I-I'm too late…”

Dogday’s entire body sinks, closing his eyes.

Catnap sets the letter down, walking over to Dogday.

He gently takes his hands, pulling him inside and closing the door.

Dogday whimpers a bit.

“I… I-I'm sorry…”

Catnap sighs, gently taking Dogday’s face in his hands.

“Look at me?”
He whispers.

Dogday tilts his head up to look Catnap in the eye.

Neither knew what to say for a few moments.

“C-can…”
Catnap starts.

“Can.. I kiss you.. at least once…?”

Dogday blushes a bit, slowly nodding.

Catnap leans in, kissing him softly on the lips.

Dogday kissed back, wrapping his arms around Catnap’s waist.

They both savored it, knowing it’d probably be their only one.

When they sadly pull away, Catnap looks deeply into Dogday’s eyes again, both wet with tears.

“Dogday…”
He whispers.
“If you don’t want to be with me… then…”

He sniffles. “I accept that…”

Dogday’s heart breaks.

“No, no, Catnap…”

He hugs him softly.

“I really do want to be with you…”
He whispers. “It’s just I don’t think we can be…”

Catnap nods. “I know…” He says. “I read the letter.”

Dogday groans, facepalming.
“Stupid letter… and that stupid bat….”

Catnap was a bit confused.
“Bat…?”

Dogday pulls back.
“Well, I received your letter first, before I wrote mine.”

Catnap’s entire body went cold.

“You got my letter first…?” he says. “But how…?”

Dogday smiles a bit.
“Who do you think gave it to me?”

Catnap realizes.

“Rabie Baby?”

Dogday nods and sighs.
“Rabie Baby.”

Catnap sighs, leaning into Dogday’s chest.

“Well, at least we don’t have to keep our feelings secret from each other anymore.”
He mumbles.

Dogday giggles a bit, stroking Catnap’s head. “I guess that’s true.”

He looks to the side.

“But when I eventually meet with their leader, I’m gonna make sure he gives her discipline.”

Catnap smiles.
“I sure hope so…”

The two embrace for a while, just enjoying the feeling of being held by one another.

Dogday then takes a breath.

“Ok… Listen… Catnap…”

Catnap pulls back to look him in the eye.

“I…”
Dogday says.

“I might be scared about being with you… but…”

He smiles softly.

“If you really want to…”

He kisses Catnap on the cheek, making him blush.

“I would be willing to give it a shot.”

Catnap’s eyes sparkle.

“R-really!?”

Dogday nods.
“Yes…”

Catnap squeals in joy, jumping forward and tackle kissing him.

Dogday catches him, returning it.

The happy moment was sweet, wholesome, and would warm the hearts of whoever looked at them.

When they pull back, Dogday looks deeply into Catnap’s eyes.

“I love you, moonshine.”

Catnap purrs, smiling. “And I love you, Sunbeam.”

The two kiss again, happily together at last.

Outside the window, Rae does a fist-pump, silently mouthing the word, “YES!”

She silently giggles a bit.
‘Mission accomplished.’

She then flies off, towards her own home and her own love.

~Heart transition~

When Rae gets back to her giant telephone-shaped house, she opens the door, walking in.

“Honey, I'm home!”
He says happily.

A certain red bear gets up off the pink fuzzy couch, walking over to her girlfriend with a smile.

“Welcome home my little fruit bat!”
She says, hugging her and kissing her cheek.

Rae smirks, hugging back. “Babe, I'm not a fruit bat.” she says.

Bobby giggles. “I knowwww..”
She smiles softly. “So, how was your day?”

Rae gets a glimmer in her eye.
“Today was great! And you know why?”

Bobby tilts her head. “Why?”

Rae smirks confidently.
“I won the bet.”

Bobby’s eyes widened. “W-wait really?!”

Rae nods. “All I had to do was show them each other’s letters, and poof, the truth came out.”
She says.

“Plus, look at this!”
She shows her the picture she’d secretly taken of Catnap and Dogday kissing.

Bobby’s eyes sparkle. “Aww!”

Rae smiles happily.

“And you know what that means~”

Bobby sighs. “Alright, you won the bet.”
She says, getting out her phone. “I’ll buy you Chinese takeout.”

Rae giggles, jumping and clapping giddily.

“Thanks babe!”
She says, hugging Bobby and kissing her cheek.

Bobby blushes and smirks. “Whatever.”

After the food had been ordered and they were waiting for the delivery, they both sat on Rae’s couch.

Bobby then gets an idea.
“Hey, how about another bet?”
She asks her.

Rae raises an eyebrow.
“Oh? What kind of bet did you have in mind?”

Bobby smiles mischievously.

“I bet that if I can get Bubba and Kickin together by next week, you have to take me on a romantic weekend trip to paradise city.”

Rae giggles, covering her mouth.

“You’re on.”

And they shook on it.

Notes:

LoveGossip is a pretty interesting and ship with potential actually
Nightmare critter x smiling critter ships don't need to be characterized as toxic-

Everyone treats Bobby as this perfect sweet angel that could never do wrong…
(I mean when they don’t make her the anti-Daynap villain-)

But I like to think she has a bit of mischief in her >:)

Some people man they’re so negative about EVERYTHING-

Notes:

I might need some help-
How should I continue this in part 2?

Simon may be the rudest of the nightmare critters but he’s like my forbidden fruit
He’s a red flag but I can’t stay away, I'm gonna get burnt

I plan to write a non-romantic story about Simon and Dogday becoming friends soon
