Beneath The Frosting

Chapter 8: Epilogue

Chapter Text

It had been a year since Sophie had said yes to giving her and Benedict a chance, and in that time, her life had changed in ways she hadn’t expected, but in ways that felt right. From the beginning, Benedict had kept his promise, he’d been patient with her, supportive, and always present when she needed him. And she’d found herself slowly, cautiously, letting down the walls she’d spent so long building.

Together, they had made it through the whirlwind of new business ventures, social events, and personal growth. Sophie had helped plan the wedding for Kate and Anthony, an event that had taken months of organising, baking, and endless tasting sessions. The work had brought her closer to Benedict’s family, who had embraced her in the same way Benedict had, without hesitation and with open arms.

He’d been by her side through one of the worst moments of her life…something that had thrown her entire world upside down. What Sophie had initially thought was a freak fire, a tragic accident that had gutted both her flat above the bakery and the business she’d spent years building, turned out to be far more sinister.

It had been arson. And the culprit? Her former stepmother, Araminta, who couldn’t stand that Sophie was finally making a name for herself, that Penwood Pastries was thriving.

The discovery came when one of Araminta’s earrings was found in the wreckage, and even more damning, her youngest daughter, Posy, came forward with evidence, confirming what Sophie had already feared. Araminta was arrested, and just like that, the woman who had once tried to keep Sophie down was finally being held accountable for her actions.

The fire had been a disaster, stripping Sophie of everything, her home, her livelihood, her sense of security. She had nothing left but the clothes on her back and a lifetime of hard work reduced to ash. But in that chaos, there had been one constant: Benedict. He hadn’t hesitated. He’d insisted that she move in with him temporarily, unwilling to let her face such a loss alone.

What was meant to be a temporary arrangement had turned into something much more permanent. Two months later, Sophie had unpacked the last of her things into their shared home, and they’d settled into a rhythm, navigating the new normal together. Benedict had been there every step of the way, not just as her partner, but as a steadying force, helping her rebuild what had been destroyed.

But it wasn’t just him. Posy, Araminta’s youngest daughter, had joined Sophie at Penwood Pastries, offering her help and support as they worked tirelessly to restore the bakery to its former glory. Despite the painful memories, there was something oddly healing about watching the bakery come back to life. And with Posy by her side, Sophie began to feel a sense of hope again, something she hadn’t been sure she’d ever find after the fire.

And then there was the rest of the Bridgerton family. Benedict’s support had been unwavering, but so had that of his relatives, Anthony, Kate, Violet, even Colin. They’d all pitched in, whether it was with hands-on help or just emotional support, showing Sophie what it meant to have a family who truly cared.

Benedict, ever resourceful, had enlisted his cousin, Roger Rokesby, to design and expand the bakery space. Roger had made sure every inch of the new space was used to its full potential, ensuring that as Penwood’s reputation continued to grow, the business would have the infrastructure to match it. The renovation was meticulous, and with the new design, the bakery was even better than before, brighter, more spacious, and more inviting. It was a fresh start in every sense of the word.

Together, they had rebuilt, not just the business, but Sophie’s life. And though she still carried the scars from the fire, the experience had brought her closer to Benedict and his family. The love and support she’d received over the past months had made her realise how much she’d been missing in her life, how much she needed the people around her. She wasn’t alone anymore. And with Benedict beside her, she felt like anything was possible.

A year to the day from Anthony and Kate’s engagement party, it was the grand reopening of Penwood Pastries which fell on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day had taken on new meaning for them both. What had started as a celebration of her business relaunch had evolved into a day that would forever mark a new chapter in Sophie’s life. The bakery was thriving, and with each passing day, Sophie felt more at home in the life she was building, one that was full of love, support, and hope.

As the evening wore on, the last of the guests began to trickle out, leaving only Benedict’s family and Posy lingering, enjoying the quiet of the evening. The familiar hum of contentment filled the air, but Sophie noticed Benedict’s intent gaze from across the room. He was standing there, as if waiting for the right moment. It didn’t take long for him to cross the space between them, his eyes never leaving hers.

"Sophie," he said, his voice quieter than usual, a seriousness in his tone that immediately made her pulse quicken. “This year with you… it’s been more than I could have ever dreamed of.”

Sophie smiled, her heart swelling at the sincerity in his words. “I feel the same,” she said softly, her eyes meeting his. Every moment they’d shared in the last year, the quiet mornings, the busy nights, the growth of the bakery, the growth of them , had felt like a dream. A dream she didn’t want to wake from.

Benedict took a deep breath, his hands slightly trembling as he stepped closer. He knelt in front of her, his movements deliberate, as if everything in this moment was building to something monumental. Sophie’s breath caught in her throat, and she instinctively reached out, her fingers brushing the warmth of his arm.

“Sophie,” he continued, his voice thick with emotion, “I’ve spent so long trying to make sense of everything. But one thing I know for certain is that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you in ways I never thought possible. And I know you’re scared of the future. Sometimes, so am I. But I want to take on all of it, every scary, wonderful thing, together.”

He paused for a moment, his eyes never leaving hers, as if he were waiting for her to speak, but Sophie could only watch him, her heart racing, the words caught in her throat.

"Sophie Baek," Benedict said, a tender smile breaking through his intense gaze. “Will you marry me?”

For a brief, suspended moment, Sophie felt time slow down. She looked at Benedict, at the man who had become so much more than she’d ever imagined. He was her constant, her strength, her love. His steady affection, his quiet support, and his unshakable belief in them had become everything to her. She knew, in that instant, that the life she’d once thought was impossible, one full of love, laughter, and security, was right here, in front of her.

Her heart swelled as she whispered the only word that felt right, the word that felt like the beginning of forever.

“Yes,” she breathed, her voice thick with emotion. “Yes.”

A wave of relief and joy flooded over them both as Benedict’s face lit up in that beautiful, unmistakable way. She could see it in his eyes, how much this moment meant to him, how much she meant to him.

Her life had transformed in ways she’d never expected. She had rebuilt her bakery, yes, but more importantly, she had rebuilt herself. Beneath the frosting of her past, she had rediscovered trust, love, and the beauty of a future that wasn’t just about surviving, it was about living. She had a new beginning, and most of all, she had Benedict. And with him, she knew that whatever the future held, they would face it together.

As the evening wound down, and they were surrounded by the warmth of friends and family, Sophie felt like the luckiest woman in the world. The next chapter of their story had just begun, and with Benedict by her side, she couldn’t wait to see where it would take them.
