Chapter Text
The three detectives each retested after the initial shock went away. Nyla took hers first, "Thank god, I'm not the pregnant one."
Angela was the next to go, hesitating at first. She eventually came out looking relieved, "Well, it's not me. That only leaves you, Lucy."
Lucy looks down at her fidgeting hands. Although she wants more kids, she was hoping to wait a couple years. "If this test comes back positive, I'm going to my doctor to confirm."
Three minutes later, the bright detective comes back out with tears swelling up in her eyes. "Test is positive." she said lowly.
Lopez and Harper immediately stand and engulf their friend in a hug. To lighten up the mood, Nyla spoke, "How do you even have time to do the tango with a five-year-old and a toddler?"
Lucy cracked the smallest smile and whacked Nyla's shoulder, "What can I say, we have a very healthy sex life."
Angela shook her head in disgust, "Ew, if it were anyone else, I wouldn't care how much you shared, but this is Bradford that we are talking about." the other two detectives chuckled at this statement.
_________
It's been a week and Lucy had confirmed her pregnancy with her doctor. Lucy had an appointment this morning that caused her to miss the first two hours of work. Her doctor informed her that she was ten weeks pregnant and sent her with ultrasound pictures. She planned to tell him after shift.
Walking into shift at ten instead of eight, she noticed her rookie sitting at a table in the breakroom doing nothing. "You think that because I come in a few hours late that you can sit around and do nothing. Last time I checked, there was paperwork that we needed to be caught up with."
Ridley stuttered, "Yes, ma'am, I finished it."
"I was only gone for two hours. They better not be half-assed done. I will be checking every single one on my break."
"Y-yes, ma'am."
She looked at him sternly, "Load up the shop. It's time to get out there."
Ridley all but ran towards the gear station. Lucy chuckled and made her way to the ending machine, already feeling the impending hunger. 'Two hours until lunch she told herself
On her way to the shop with three bags of chips, she noticed the empty bullpen. Normally there are at least a few patrol officers here in between arrests. "Ridley!" she shouted as she walked into the garage.
He came running around the shop and into sight and she spoke again, "Where is everyone?"
"I think I heard something about needing as many units as possible for a 10-71 and officer in distress."
"Ridley! You wouldn't be standing here right now if you knew what a 10-71 is and an officer in distress! You would already be on scene! There's active shooting!" They sped down the street after asking dispatch for location. "Who was the officer in distress?"
"I think sergeant Bradford."
She gripped the steering wheel tighter as she suppressed a scream. 'Officer down! Officer down! Send an ambulance now!' They could hear over the radio
Radio came to a hard stop as they arrived on scene. Pushing past dozens of officers, she came to a half as she seen her husband lying on the ground, bleeding out. Angela was applying pressure to his gunshot wound. Multiple people were in handcuffs. She pushed Tim's rookie against a shop, "You let your training officer get shot!" she screamed louder than any of her fellow officers have heard before.
Miles stood shocked, "I fired my gun. I did what I was supposed to do."
"Tim was shot in the chest! He's dying and the ambulance still isn't here! He has a wife and kids! What am I supposed to tell his children!" she forcefully pushed Miles away from herself, "Oh god, I'm going to vomit." she announced as she placed her hand over her mouth.
Being aware of her pregnancy, Nyla attempted to calm her down, "Lucy, he's going to be fine. You need to breathe."
Lucy could hear the faint sound of sirens as she passed out, falling into her fellow detective's arms. As Tim was being put into an ambulance, Lucy came to and jumped into the back of the ambulance as they closed the doors. She wasn't going to let anyone stop her. Her husband's life is on the line.
After Tim was rushed into surgery, Grey demanded that she get checked out.
Officers filled the waiting room. Civilians were here and there, but not nearly as many as there were cops. They aren't co-workers. They are family. Everyone in the room looked up as Angels walked in, covered in Tim's blood. "Maybe you should get cleaned up." Nolan suggested.
"I'm not leaving this room until I know he's okay." her voice unsteady.
A little while later, Angela whispered to Nyla, "You should go be with Lucy. No one else knows and she's scared of losing her husband."
Nyla nodded and went to find Lucy. Angela proceeded to give out instructions without thinking. "Okay, listen up!" she shouted. Everyone including the civilians looked at her. "I sent Harper to see how Lucy is doing. I know we are all extremely worried about Tim. His son is going to wonder why daddy didn't call on his lunch break, like he does every single day. His daughter is probably sitting at school wondering why her daddy didn't make his normal drive around the playground during recess. I would go pick them up, but I can't pick them up looking like this. Celina and Nolan please go get our niece and nephew. As for the rest of you, Timothy Bradford would scold your asses for waiting on him instead of being out there on the streets doing your job."
Wade seen the officers hesitating, "You heard detective Lopez!"
Soon enough, the only officers in the waiting room were, Wade, Angela, Seth, and Miles. "Do you think he's going to pull through?" Seth asked his fellow rookie.
"I don't know, man, that was a pretty gnarly shot to the chest."
Angela seen Lucy and Nyla coming from down the hall, "Stop being disrespectful. Stay quit or get kicked from the program." she finished as they walked into the waiting room.
"It's been three hours, and we still haven't heard anything." Chen snuffled.
It wasn't long before Celina and John walked back in with two little people. The little boy went straight to Lucy, while the girl stomped right on over to Miles Penn. Lucy turned towards her daughter. Mini Lucy placed her hands on her hips. "You got my daddy hurt."
"I-I'm-"
The little girl rolled her eyes, "I wasn't done. You are just a boot. You think you know everything like my daddy does, but you don't. My daddy always comes home. He has a family, and you let him get hurt." she took a big breath and crossed her arms. Milah looked at her mom before looking back at the rookie, "One more thing. You should stop flirting with my mommy. My daddy doesn't like that." She didn't let him speak before sauntering over to Lucy.
Lucy gave a light chuckle as she looked at her husband's rookie, jaw dropped to the floor.
_______
"He's going into cardiac arrest!" The surgeon shouted as he stared pumping the heart directly. An OR nurse gave her the paddles.
The surgeon shocked his heart once, pump the heart, shock, pump the heart, "BP rising, 90/60."
"Let's get back to it." Doctor Voss ordered.
"Bullet looks like it hit the left ventricle. If we don't get it out, he's going to arrest again. He already had a big occlusion. We need to work fast."
"Someone goes update the family."
_____
Someone in scrubs came into the waiting room, "Family of Tim Bradford?"
Lucy shot up from her seat. Her daughter asleep resting on Nyla and her son in her own arms, "I'm his wife."
"Let's go somewhere more private."
"Just tell me. Everyone in this damn room is his family."
The new doctor took a breath, "Okay. He coded on the table, but we were able to bring him back. He had a lot of bleeding, but we have located the bullet. it's in his left ventricle. He is not out of the woods yet. He has an occlusion, which is an obstruction of a blood vessel. We are working to repair it before it causes more damage to the heart from lack of blood supply. This could take quite a few hours, but I will try to update you as best as I can."
