Chapter Text

Gambit sat on his bed, heart racing as he contemplated his next move. The weight of Death’s words hung heavily in the air, mixing with the palpable tension of being discovered. Doubt flooded his mind—what if he confessed? What if they turned their backs on him? He felt trapped, torn between his past and the hope of belonging with the X-Men.
Taking a deep breath, he mustered the courage to step outside his room. The hallway felt like a battleground, each step echoing with uncertainty. When he finally reached the main area, he paused at the threshold, his heart sinking. The sight before him was both comforting and confusing.
The X-Men gathered around a table laden with board games, their laughter and camaraderie wrapping around Gambit like a warm embrace. They looked up at him, smiles stretching across their faces. Wolverine leaning back with a relaxed demeanor, and Storm flashing a welcoming smile that lit up her eyes. “Hey, Gambit!” she called, motioning for him to join them. “Come pick a game!”
For a moment, he stood frozen, torn between the warmth of their invitation and the gnawing fear of his secret being exposed. As he glanced into the reflection of the hallway mirror, he saw Death's face staring back at him, confused he shred his shoulders, a clear confuse expression plastered across his features. “I don’t know,” death said, echoing Gambit’s own trepidation. “Why are you doing this? They’ll find out eventually.”
“Shut up,” Gambit murmured softly, not wanting to betray his inner turmoil to his friends. The last thing he wanted was to dampen their spirits or confirm Death's taunts. Still, doubt lingered in his mind. How could he sit here and act like everything was fine when he felt so conflicted?
As Beast gestured to the assortment of games, the warm laughter drew him in like a moth to a flame. They were simply enjoying each other’s company, unburdened by secrets or shadowy legacies. And perhaps, just maybe, this moment of normalcy could anchor him amidst the chaos swirling within.
Gambit’s heart told him to embrace the moment. “Salut mes amis!” He finally called out, forcing a smile as he stepped further into the room.

“Come on choose a game!” Rogue chimed in enthusiastically. “We’ve got everything from strategy to chaos. You know you want to join us!”
Still apprehensive, Gambit approached the table, glancing at the brightly colored boxes. Part of him longed to dive into the distraction and camaraderie, while the other half whispered dark warnings. Death’s presence pressed in at the edge of his consciousness, sowing seeds of conflict.
With a shaky breath, he reached for a game—a familiar one filled with strategy and chance. It felt odd to clutch a box while bearing such a heavy secret, but he forced himself to take the plunge. “Let’s play this one,” he said, lifting the box with a grin that barely masked his inner turmoil.
As the games began, the laughter and friendly banter flowed around him, slowly easing the tension in his chest. He tried to lose himself in the rhythms of their play, but the nagging voice of Death remained at the back of his mind. It was a delicate balance—one he needed to navigate carefully.
For now, surrounded by friends who seemed oblivious to the darkness trailing him, Gambit leaned into the moment. He hoped this brief escape could shield him from the inevitable truth waiting just beyond the laughter. Yet, deep down, he knew that sooner or later, the shadows would catch up with him. But for now, he would play, savoring every smile, every shared moment, while clinging to the hope that he could find a way to confront the truth on his own terms.By the end of the night. Gambit realized he finally found the light and the end of the tunnel.
